Thanks to Coach Rippetoe's comprehensive instructional videos, this is the first and only back squat form I learned. Not saying high bar squats have no application, but if you want to get as strong as you can, this is how you squat, period.

    This video was increadibly helpfull. The reason is, it's more than just the instruction of how to perform the movement correctly, rather it shows you what you can do wrong and how you should think to better the movement. I'm sure I'll have Rip's voice in my head saying "stay in the hip" next time I do a set of squats. Thanks please keep this kind of content coming. As a result, I tend to either lean on items too small or unstable to hold my bodyweight, or I lose my balance and fall to the ground. I am an expert at coaching the lifts, but I really struggle at the critical coaching skill of leaning on things. Slapping people's butts is another weak point. Is there a seminar coming soon for those of us who missed out on day 2? Thanks!

    So I can bounce back up while squatting using my bracing as sort of a spring? Interesting. I suppose I should be careful near my max and lower the weight more carefully with less momentum from the top, concentrating on my bracing while going down. It would still require some momentum maybe nearing the 10-5% at the bottom which is ensured by the quads while keeping the abdominal floor tight for the bounce back.

    • @builderjunkie0126
      @builderjunkie0126 Před 5 lety +4

      Mental Gear you shouldn’t dive bomb your squats if that’s what you mean. You should stay tight in the glutes and hams that way you sort of bounce out of the hole because of the stretch reflex. Your muscles are already tight and under a stretch so they’ll contract better with more force to drive you out of the hole. But the whole process should be controlled and braced properly.

      How do I maintain extension of the lumbar spine?

    • @i_booba
      @i_booba Před 5 lety +5

      @@nicolasarmel2372 Squeeze your core as hard as you can, for starters, at all times when you're underneath the bar. If you do this, your lower back should maintain its starting position throughout the lift. Secondly, when you are standing underneath the bar before you squat, squeeze your glutes as hard as you can. This will set your body in a good starting position. Then, when you start your descent, break at your knees and hips simultaneously (some people prefer breaking one before the other, so you may need to experiment - but breaking at the knees and hips together works well for most lifters). Make sure your knees track your toes, and you are pushing your butt back far enough such that the bar stays over midfoot. If you do all of this, your lower back should remain neutral. Just never *EVER* lose tightness. Losing tightness will risk lumbar rounding.

    • @toanvo427
      @toanvo427 Před 4 lety

      Any squat style the lower spine and the rest the spine is UK n neutral spine position and braced there with proper air into the core. Hold the air throughout the rep to make it easy to maintain neutral spine. Lower back does not move as you butt and knee move the while back angle becomes 45 degrees to allow for straight bar path

      I think mostly to prevent your chest from shooting up, as you should use your hips drive.

    • @fellowtraveller2795
      @fellowtraveller2795 Před 5 lety +6

      Shorter range of motion. It's useful in powerlifting meets where the goal is to load as much weight as possible (contest) rather than to get as strong as possible (training)

    So I've been high bar squatting ever since i started lifting, I feel my form and posture slowly getting better each month. Occasionally I try the low bar technique and it's sort of fine with just the barbell but as soon as I put any weight on the bar my arms and shoulders start to hurt like crazy. It just bugs me seeing this guy teach these people to squat with such beautiful form and yet I can't seem to get it right even with only 40kg :/

    • @mattseaton5832
      @mattseaton5832 Před 3 lety +1

      I think it's usually caused by shoulder overextension on the way up, trying to lift the bar with your arms/shoulders as you rise, possibly due to not having your back tight enough to create a solid shelf. Once I corrected that and focused on keeping my arms at the same angle to the rest of my torso for the entire squat, my elbow/shoulder pain went away. You can try the talon grip too. Some people swear by it.

  • @Terminxman

    Did no one notice how uneven batman was holding the bar?
    Also the guy Rip bitched at for following the bar was actually doing it correctly for spotting someone doing a ton of weight, it was just unnecessary here. I mean they really don't need side spotters for this at all. Thing is, if you NEED 3 spotters, then they NEED to follow the bar

    Meh, not a big fan of this low bar method. I'm pretty sure most of these guys had their weight on their heal and underworked their quads. Atg high bar is the way to go, and do rdl and hip thrust for posterior chain. Low bar is just good for maximizing your weight for powerlifting.
