Shades of Tommy Cooper- who actuslly did drop dead on stage as the curtain closed over his enormous feet. Everyone thought it was part of the act, and were howling with laughter - certainly never thinking it was the very end of the show for Tommy! One hell of a way to go for a comedian. Talk about, literally, leaving them laughing! RIP Tommy! Nellie was before my time.
I saw him on stage in Jersey ch islands the week before he passed,he did a card trick called "cowboys & Indians " then he flicked them all at me & said "round them up" ...hilarious,I kept one as a keepsake !😅 R.I.P. TOMMY 😂 kath Yorkshire England
How sad that she passed away shortly after. It was very kind of the Queen and King to send flowers even though they didn't want the recognition of doing so.
I absolutely love your stories. Even if they are sad, they bring out the duty and courage of the people and how cherished they have been by others. Thank you, Neil.
Nellie Wallace died in a London nursing home on 24 November 1948, aged 78, after a serious bout of bronchitis. Her daughter Nora pre-deceased Nellie earlier in 1948, and it was said that Nellie "lost the will to live".
The problem today is there are not any true ⭐️stars⭐️ in the 21st century. Danny Kaye was magnificent, especially in the Court Jester: “The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true!" I ❤❤❤ it. What a poignant moment in Royal Command performances. Thank you Neil x
Thank you Neil 👏👏👏for such an interesting theatre story. You bring us historical events with a human touch. Please write a book and I would line up to buy a copy.👍👍👍
Now that they're Royal Variety Performances instead of the Command Performance, you see the people currently appearing in shows, not necessarily performers liked by the Royals
Oh, a bus ride! That bus is really moving, I can't imagine trying sipping a cup without wearing the contents of my cup. 😊 Oh, that's a sad story. Another story of a time gone by. Thank you, Neil. Cheers!👋👋😁
Such a fascinating story Neil, you bring sunshine and cheer to our every day with your genuine words of wisdom, your hard work and wealth of knowledge so appreciated. The Royal Family have always had, class, decorum and generosity, our late Queen honouring Nellie Wallace was truly wonderful. Hxx🌹🇬🇧👏👋👋👋❤️❤️
Thus why it was called the Royal *Command* Performance ... and not _pre-paid_ performance. ❤these historical vignettes you present for us, Neil!! What a multi-faceted talent was Danny Kaye⭐Brilliant performer! At least Nellie Wallace went out doing what she loved. Given that her daughter passed fairly recently, she was probably in a weakened state. A very touching gesture from the RF ❣
When I was young The Royal Variety Performance was called The Royal Command Performance , the name being changed to reflect changes in society and attitudes.
What a way to go, at the top with the Royals enjoying it, what an accalade, and I dare say that's the way she wanted to go, with lots of applause. Then a number of years later, we lost another great performer Tommy Cooper.
What a wonderful report and walk down History, Neil. This 'story' was so perfectly told and very, very enjoyable, despite the more delicate subject matter. Thank you Neil, not just for this story, but for everything. Keep your light shining bright, my friend. ~ Cobs (UK) x
I've heard that Julie Andrews performance many times, and she is wonderful. Didn't know about Nellie Wallace... wasn't around then, but a lovely story of concern for her from the Queen and King. TY for sharing this great story Neil.
Lovely story Neil, I hadn't heard of Nellie Wallace, however it is always great to hear these stories about former famous performers and you always come up with the goods. Thank you, lovely gesture from the Royals too.
👋👋👋👋💕💕💕💕🤗🌞🌹 Thank you Neil for another fascinating behind the scenes story and a bit of history most of us knew nothing about but love learning from you ❣️ Thank you for all your hard work Neil💕💕
Sir, you are a wealth of history, interest and entertainment. Love your cheery wave at the beginning and your locations of beautiful London. Hello from a happy new fan from 102 Fahrenheit (39 Celsius or thereabouts) in Texas!
Another great story, thanks. Nellie died doing what she loved and knew the Royals really liked her. Imagine the great fruit and food from the royal kitchen?
How very interesting,i’d never heard of Nellie Wallis ,but i do remember watching Tommy Cooper die on stage as a youngster 😢 Thankyou for sharing Neil 👏👏💖😎
You won’t believe this but just as you said put your tea down, I was having a mouthful of coffee. When you said put your tea down I started laughing and nearly choked myself because I still had to swallow it, not let it go all over the place so I tried to swallow it and nearly choked myself but I was still laughing and I thought Neal always cheers me up. You’ve got a very quick wit there my friend and please don’t ever lose it. 🇦🇺👋😘
I don't claim to remember much about her performance but I saw Nellie Wallace ( who died on my mother's birthday) when she appeared at the Hackney Empire ,an East London variety theatre. It would have been when I was about 8 so in 1946. What I do remember is the audience's gales of laughter and myself wondering what was so funny. I think that Bernard Miles was on the programme too. Many years later I learned that what had been incomprehensible to me at the time were his extremely risque jokes.🏴🇬🇧
🇭🇲🦘👋 So beautifully told by you (yet sad) event in entertainment history. Yet! In some ways, so fitting for a performer to have 'carried on' regardless, as Nellie did. Giving her all. With the royal family (at the time) showing great concern for Nellie while in hospital; and (after her death) everything done (by the royal family) as Nellie would have expected. As you said. With class, decorum and style! I do appreciate these true stories of times now gone, and always so very well 'presented' by you Neil. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 This will be the only comment (for you) that I can manage to leave today, but (be assured) that I am watching all your videos, and "Thank you" so much Neil xx 👔⭐👋
Fascinating story Neil. I recall that Tommy Cooper died on stage, or on TV I think. Apart from the metaphorical version is it a frequent event, dying on stage? Is there a book in that? Or maybe a few videos. Lovely response by the Royals of the time too.
You know Neil, I absolutely love your podcasts, the information, the sights, the giggles and the waves, even though I've waved back a couple of times with my cuppa in my hand 🫣 Thank you so much for being you. I've always loved Danny Kaye and I didn't know that he paid all that money to ensure he performed for our dear Royal Family. It didn't surprise me though as he did so much on the quiet for children. There's no doubt about it, we have had and do have some wonderful people roaming the earth. 💞
What a thrill for a young Julie Andrews to sing for the king and queen!
Hello Neil 👋👋 thanks for the story. Royal Family are the class act 👀🎉😇🥰
The Royals, at least the present day working ones, are a class act. They did and do not have to show off and publicise if they choose not.
Shades of Tommy Cooper- who actuslly did drop dead on stage as the curtain closed over his enormous feet. Everyone thought it was part of the act, and were howling with laughter - certainly never thinking it was the very end of the show for Tommy! One hell of a way to go for a comedian. I was watching this too. Very sad.
I thought it was Tommy Sean is talking about! I was watching when Tommy dies RIP

I remember watching it
I was so sure he was going to talk about Tommy Cooper. I've never heard of Nellie Wallace, I'll have to look her up.
How sad that she passed away shortly after. It was very kind of the Queen and King to send flowers even though they didn't want the recognition of doing so.
So sad to hear about Nellie's passing. The Royals know how to be classy, stylish and of course, they have proper decorum.
What a great story! I love hearing about British History, especially the royals untold stories Thank Neal!

Danny Kaye was a magical entertainer
So very interesting are the stories you present, Neil. We are grateful that you do not leave them to die and become forgotten history. Thank you.
I agree!
My mother just loved Danny Kaye. As a child any movie with
Danny Kaye was in was a must see.
The wreath with no name -- yes, that does sound like Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
I remember watching Tommy Cooper collapsing on stage and no one knew at first what was going on. That was a sad day I loved him
A sad but lovely story.
Thank you Neil 👏👏👏for such an interesting theatre story. You bring us historical events with a human touch. Please write a book and I would line up to buy a copy.👍👍👍
I do agree Neil that recent Royal Command Performances can be tedious at times . Big wave 👋

NELLY- Another heatwarming story, Mr Sean.
When I was young The Royal Variety
Performance was called The Royal Command Performance , the name being changed to reflect changes in society and attitudes.
What a story! A sense of "duty" if you will, even from performers. Sad that Nellie passed away. Sounds like she went out on top.
Too warm for tea here in Washington DC. Lemonade for me today.
I always liked Danny Kaye.
i would like some ice cream

The show must go on!

Neil what a sad tale about Nellie Wallace I wonder if she knew that the king and queen was so fond of her.
👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻
I love the bus rides. Thank you for riding backwards so we that have a good view.
I was watching this “ just like that”
Lovely story Neil, I hadn't heard of Nellie Wallace, however it is always great to hear these stories about former famous performers and you always come up with the goods. Thank you, lovely gesture from the Royals too.

Tommy cooper died on stage.
What a sad, but wonderful story... thank you Neil x
Love all this wonder history you bring us Neil thenk you.
Watched that live on tv , it was a strange thing to witness Tommy Cooper was well loved.
It’s the way to go. At the top, still performing, then you’re gone. I have always been a fan of going out with a bang rather than a whimper.
Sad story Neil, but thank you for sharing, love your history stories 🇳🇿
YAY!! Bus ride!! That was quick! I love Danny Kaye, definitely a legend.

There is class an d then there is classless
I agree Neil, that was class!

Hi Neil ! Danny Kaye had a recording studio in Seattle called Kaye-Smith. It’s a small world.

Yes..I commented before seeing the rest. Her Majesty was always gracious. What a kind gesture!

👋 what a wonderful story. Thank you for sharing with us. You must do tons of research. It certainly shows😊
What a wonderful, funny entertainer he was. Seen several of his movies.. long time ago.
I've thought it would be wonderful to recreate the old theatre experience along with the vintage b/w films that were famous from the start.
Neil, what a great story. Thank you. Agree with previous post... Julie Andrews... wow!
