it's missing the most important part to say why having the DMA controller is more efficient. now you have to ask the DMA controller (instead of the CPU) which then has to ask the CPU anyway. so why is that faster? could you please explain?
Without DMA controller, I'm pretty sure CPU who was doing all the work of copying data from I/O and transfer, having to stop doing other processes it could otherwise do instead of wasting cpu time. With DMA controller, the CPU is just required for interrupts and is not held for a long time, so it can do more work elsewhere in the system. General reason: In the case you have a slow I/O data transfer, It saves the CPU from doing "useless work".

What does the CPU do during the hold state...does it stop all its execution n wait until the system bus is free???
it stops the execution part of the the i/o device and keeps the other tasks and routine running
