I’m a E5, 11B, traditional guardsmen in my first contract. Graduated last year and I really try to encourage my guys to go, especially NCOs and officers. As you pure breed guardsman I was behind the curb tactically UNTIL I attended RTAC (natty guard’s pre ranger). RTAC gave me the tactical foundation to show up feeling competent, and it made a difference in my performance during patrols. Ranger school itself gave me the most valuable reps in leadership positions and greatly improved my performance as an 11B and a leader. Super grateful for the experience as a whole.
Went through RTAC back in 2012 while active duty, phenomenal program, really sets you up for success.

@@Tplummy123 RTAC is open for active duty as well, including pathfinder, air assault at WTC. I was in 3rd ID at the time, there were about 20 of us going through that were AD.

The thing about Ranger School is you will find that you are not as tough as you thought you were, however you will discover you are a harder SOB than you ever thought your would be!

Not everyone watching is getting ready for Ranger School, Gritty. Some of us are broken down old grunts who struggle to go two days without a muscle relaxer, and give ourselves a pat on the back for making 30 minutes on a stationary bike.

100% agree with everything he says. Once you have the coveted tab you will stand out among peers. Not that those who don't have a tab can't be great Soldiers but it is a discriminator. I recently was the keynote speaker for a basic officer leader course (not infantry). I noted how many multi star general officers who were not infantry are Ranger qualified. It made a huge difference for me when I had to lead Soldiers in combat. Also important to remember that once earned it has to be represented every day of the rest of your career.
All that being said once you decide to go first and foremost it has to be the #1 priority in your life when you are preparing and actually attending. If not you will not make it past the RPAT. Second, you have to be physically prepared, you have to be able to do 49 PERFECT push ups, run 5 miles within 40 minutes (and give yourself a window, not barely making it). You have to be able to ruck 12 miles in under 3 hours. This is just the beginning. Third, you have to have the mental fortitude to never quit. Once you get past the first few days (which are only the beginning) you have to be mentally tough. Last, you have to be a team player, willing to shoulder more than your fair share. To take care of your buddies and they will take care of you. You also have to be lucky. Luck is a big part of it...but you make your luck by being prepared. I was very fortunate to make it straight through without recycle. I recently had the great honor to pin the tab on my son who also made it straight through. RLTW!

I ran a sub 40 min 5 mile on Friday for the first time in my life. That was the only thing that I was worried about with ranger school. One of the happiest moments of my life knowing I can pass RAP week.
Bro great job, but keep working on running faster. Your legs are going to be smoked before you start the 5 mile run.

I was always told to aim for a 36 minute 5 mile so that even on your worst day you can pass the 5 mile.
It was 5.85 miles at a 7:47 min per mile pace. Safe to say, I still have alot of work to do. Looking to get below a 35 min 5 mile, thank you guys.
Can you do it with 5 hours sleep, PT test and swim test the day prior?

You’re at East Range Training Area. Where 25th has their Lightning Academy (SURT, Pre Sapper, AASLT, Jungle, FRIES/SPIES, Rappel Master). Also in the area is the NCOA, land NAV courses, dig sites, obstacle courses etc.
I challenge you to knock out the Jungle 5k. OCPS, boots, FLC, two one quarts and rubber duck. The standard is 40mins, avg is about 35. Get with the TAC and they’ll spin you up on the route.

The attrition of Ranger school starts before you even step foot on camp Darby. I was supposed to go to ranger school with two of my buddies. They both quit during the train up and I was the only one to actually go. JUST GO, don’t think about it, just TRAIN and GO.

I don't know if the Marines are still writing Recon contracts but go talk with a recruiter. Note if you take this option you will need to be comfortable in the water. The water part of the Basic Recon Course will make you have a spiritual moment.
i personally consider being a US Army Ranger as a huge honor and to me a true testament to what an American is. I'm just a civilian but its like a personal dream to become a Ranger.

You should do it now. Think about it like this, you are 28 years old, now is the time to try this. You can always be a chef later in life. But becoming a ranger is a once in a lifetime opportunity. If you're 80 years old and you look back on your life, will you regret not going into the army and becoming a ranger? If so then you need to start soon. I'm 25 and I'm in a similar boat. But ik 100% I'm going into army, there is no doubt in my mind. You can become a ranger if you prepare and make it a priority. The worst thing is regretting later in life that you never got your shit together to try it. Also Ranger school will change your life, it will make you a better leader and role model. Any other goals you have will be much easier to accomplish after go through this. You have to challenge yourself to grow. Just food for thought.
Ranger School doesnt make you a Ranger. RASP does. So sign up to be a cook, with an Airborne School/RASP guarantee.
Jungle and Ranger grad here… Jungle was fun and definitely a good test run before going to SURT and Ranger school. The jungle archway down there is where they set up all of their demos and do a lot of classes.

Hey man I graduated rtac about a week ago. Day zero is the worst imo because of the unknown and it's not even that bad. You really won't get smoked much there at all, and the training is top tier. Good luck to you! Land nav takes a lot out of you, but don't feel discouraged if you don't get go's with 4/5. I got 3/5 and they still kept me. If you haven't been dropped you are still in the running! Do your absolute best on the day 1 pt test. Though you will only be dropped for failing the run I think they heavily base their decisions on whether or not to keep you (if you don't pass land nav) based on your physical fitness.

Yep, that’s where you’ll go for rappelling in the second week of Air Assault school. They use it for other stuff as well, but that’s what I went there for. Enjoy it out there, there’s tons to do and see!

Had a great and fulfilling Army career, but always regretted never going the hardcore route (settled for cushy helo seats). I've been looking a lot into ranger school recently, even though I really have no chance of going (Air Force and I'm not security forces) I've always been interested and I want to at least attend pre-ranger to really see if I'd have a shot. It's definitely given me more of a fitness standard that I hold myself to with being able to pass the RPA if nothing else. If I'm ever given the chance to attend your videos and advice have convinced me to take it no matter what

Training hard in the right ways, there's just more naysayers than encouragers as you mentioned. I'll focus on the positive.

Ranger School class 04-12, graduated as an Artillery Officer right out of BOLC. Everything this guy said in this video is true, and it’s absolutely true if you are not Infantry.
Learning Infantry Tactics in Ranger School helped me better understand the purpose of fire support, and how to best support maneuver elements on the ground with fires.
I had no idea when I graduated how big of an impact that school would make on my military career and my life, I constantly drew on the lessons I learned in Ranger School during my 8 years on active duty. It’s something I will be proud of for the rest of my life. RLTW!

They train RAP and Darby Phase there (small unit tactics). . .its setup so that when you graduate there, you have to go directly to Ranger school; there is no deferment or going back to your home unit, its Ranger school. You can also get your Jungle Tab there

I went when I was 32 years old and it was the best thing for my career and life. RLTW
Nothing but respect for Rangers. I flew medevac out of Ft. Benning, Camp Merrill and Camp Rudder 84-85 , then Ft. Rucker 85-89 teaching combat skills to flight students. We did the air assault mission with the Rangers at Camp Rudder and our students brought tons of chow for them. The Ranger school rule was that they could eat all they could on the aircraft, but they were not allowed to take any food with them. Those guys tore up some chow between PZ and LZ! We would fly slow and do excessively long LZ recons to give them more time to eat! We enjoyed the mission and watching how grateful they were for the chow!

If you’re a new infantry officer it’s a definite plus to go to Ranger training after your basic course.

Can certainly relate to the fact you an go on much further than you think you can.three years as 11B airborne ,the last year in vietnam was certainly proof.We had several rangers in the unit and we relied on them quite a bit especially since they seemed to never be lost,learned that competence and courage usually comes in people that are easy going, have a sense of humor, confident in their ability and not having to prove it by being a hard ass.
Love this! I’m stationed at Tripler as an RN and I’m trying to go. Frowned upon by most but I’m trying to shift the attitude/culture for those in MEDCOM to still train like hell for readiness. Btw you’re at East Range which is owned by LA for schools (jungle, SURT etc) & land nav.

I’m training up now to eventually go in with my brother but I also turn 30 this year. I’ve been naturally athletic my whole life and haven’t had any breaks or significant injury’s and have had my fair share of adversity to date as a civilian. Coming from IT, I’ve been told to consider the Option 40. If Gritty or any of you lot in the comments would share some of your perspectives it’d be appreciated.

I’m trying to get in too - 35 year old female, really struggling to drop some pounds, but I keep working for it everyday. Still have a few more months since I’ll be getting my degree finished in December and hope I’ll be enlisted shortly after that
Your timed runs, situps, and pushups occur in the first 2 or 3 days.. After that its all rucking with 70-80lbs+. Practice rucking in boots and find hills/inclines to play with because mountain phase is a smoker. The whole course sucks everyday.. Tell yourself, "i'll quit tomorrow"..The end.

I just attended the lighting academy Air assault school as a cadet this past month. That is the rappel tower where they operate for Air assault, rappel master, fries and spies, and I believe that their surt (pre ranger) and jungle classes also utilize the tower and training area. You can often hear the lanes being ran or people doing land nav while out there.
Also, I love watching and appreciate your videos as I am planning on attending ranger school if I get the opportunity. Trying to get as much information to prepare myself.

As the ruck continued .He went very deep fantastic info on life and challenges and why to be the best . Jungle School be a great challenge and the sincere flip of the glasses .In final thoughts-priceless honesty . You never hear him swear. But that tossing negative naysayers aside-was spot on.

I ship for 12B osut tomorrow. Wanted to go for a 10 minute run, I started and it sucked, and I was listening to this video to keep occupied. I ended up pushing for 20 minutes and at the end I thought "it wasn't that bad." I even upped the speed from 9min/mile to 7:47 to sprint out the last 2 minutes

My son reported to Ranger School today! He came out of Airborne then RTAC with a injured leg. I’ve got my fingers crosses he can keep going!

@@GrittySoldier The leg issue was too much. He called me today. He is back at the RTLI barracks. He said the pain was 6 out of 10 with 800mg of Motrin onboard. The RIs were smoking everyone in Alpha and he just couldn't keep up. He is a stoic kid who never complained about anything in his 21 years. For him to say 6/10 and sound really bummed was earthshattering.
I told him nothing worthwhile comes easy. He will recover and come back stronger! He was slated for the 11-22 RS but they pushed him to RTAC after 1.5 weeks of RTLI. He is National Guard 11B1P and started OSUT in January as an E3. At Airborne he had a couple really hard landings. 1st jump he was the last man in his chalk out the door 1st on the ground. He must have found a downdraft.
He passed every requirement in RTAC and if not for the leg I thought he stood a good chance. Last ruck at RTAC he limped all the way and made the time hack, he said he wasn't going to quit.
He was concerned about his experience level going up against guys from IBOLC and Battalion. He listened too much to the PNN about getting Peered out and how lower ranked guys don't stand a chance in RS.

One of my sons is getting prepped for Ranger School. His shins are always somewhat an issue. I’m praying they hold up but RS sounds very hard physically on the body. Hope your son is OK.
@@blaster3094 RTLI is a great program, I went there in march/april. Unfortunately I didn't meet the standard on pushups. He shouldn't listen to the PNN about national guard privates getting peered out, RTLI guys pass all the time!

@@GrittySoldier I’m actually training to attend here at the Lightning Academy. I have gone through an obstacle course here a few times, that one you found was way nicer than the one I’ve been training on.
I recently graduated recruit training for Marines but I still think Rangers are pretty sick and I've always gotten a lot of really good knowledge out of this channel :)

I knew that you were in Hawaii in your last video. I know exactly where you are at. That's where they used to train for air assault school. We did use that location for PRP from time to time.
I'm a reservist 38B. I've been interested in going but my unit doesn't really send people. Trying to find an avenue for it! This motivated me to keep asking
After you graduate from RASP and get to battalion you will start your year long training to prepare for ranger school. You might also deploy in that time(it was 2006 when I went, so we deff deployed within 4 months to OIF) so PT would be up to you. Dont worry, before ranger school you WILL goto pre-ranger where you will pass your 12 mile ruck, do land nav and your water assessment over. During your RASP hold, which you will probably be stuck in for weeks if you are 11X program, they will get ready for RASP as well. Take the time after basic, during airborne to do PT. Do not go out and drink, and waste time. Get ready now.
edit: if you are at a division and prepping for ranger school, i strongly recommend if your division has a special forces recruiter/PT program. I know for a fact 3ID, 10th mtn and 82ND airborne have one. Join it. Ask your chain of command to get your PT switched. This is a big prerequisite i told my soldiers who wanted to attend. 3ID in the past had a mandatory 6 month SF PT program to put in your packet.

That's the area where they hold ceremonies for jungle school graduates. Not far down the trail is the Air Assault course, you probably saw it. I go in October and am ready.

When 3/75 was forming my battalion commander nominateted me. As an Infantry Officer I couldnt refuse. My Infantry Branch management officer called me, I told him I wasnt airborne qualified. He said they had a School for that. I then told him I was not Ranger qualified. He said they had a School for that too. Five day later I was at ranger School, which three years of salsa dancincing did not prepare me for. I later went SOF succesfully and was happy with my carrera choice.
HUUUUAHHHH. I joined the army in 1990 with two years of college, went in as a E4, Basic was tough, but had a few years in the working world, basic wasnt bad. From there I went Airborne which I though the cardio vascular training was more difficult, because they built your legs up to sustain hard drops, Ranger School, because I learned most the military ways from basic training , air assult and airborne , Ranger School was rather fun, I guess it was because I was acclimated in military life. It depends on the individual. I will tell you this , in life after. Im 54 yo. I am greatly more physically fit than most of the males , capable of producing more and having a extremely cool head about the most tedious circumstances. You are a leader and most younger collogues will fall in line with your direction. Its my actions and standing, I dont have to announce or be announced. Its a odd thing that you can walk into a room and get the crowd to fall in line. you are the Alpha personality. I was born a Cancer...the passive personality but ranger school taught me how to be a high alpha , which is something needed in the work world today out of the military. If anything ...years into your life, the strangest thing you want to do again,. is to do Military Basic Training when you get older because you will remember how good you felt , not just the mental emotional confidence..but how good you felt being in prime physical condition.

If i'm able to do it, i'm 5'6'' about 155lbs than you can do it. Don't Think for once you can't do it and you can conquer anything you put your mind to. Remember while your in Ranger School. It's Tough but what is easy worth anything? Stay Focused.
Went through ranger school back in 2000, got out in 2009, enlisted in 98. I was.with the 25th ID 1-24th INF deuce four, back when I went through I'd say yeah do it but they let females do it these days so I'm not sure how.worth it it is anymore. Rager school taught you way more than being combat effective it taught you how to.function with a broken body and tired mind. You.leqrnes how to push yourself and live in a place of being uncomfortable and being comfortable with that. Going to ranger school and having graduated has paved the way in my life. Just got back from there, what a coincidence! Class 02-23 Air Assault School. That is the Phase 3 training area. Jungle School is right down that gravel road to the west.
Post- Marine Corps in 1991, after Operations Desert Shield and Storm, I Enlisted into the Army,from 08 January 1993 to 17 December 1998, after a previous 1 Year and 4 Months in the Army National Guard ( ARNG) and US Army Reserve ( USAR) . My MOS was 94B , later 92G( Food Services Specialist). In My all too brief Army Career, I met only 2 NCOs who were " Tabbed Spoons", id est, RANGER Short Tab - Qualified Cooks. Sadly but truly, I was NEVER, EVER afforded the opportunity to attend and successfully complete Ranger School, although, I did earn the Black Beret and 3d RANGER BN Scroll. I went to Jungle School (JOTC) FT. Sherman Panama in 1993 with 2/325 82nd Airborne.
I did land nav at East Range so many times that I knew exactly where you were at all times 😂

If I could do it over again I’d go Army and shoot for rangers and push like a mofo for 18D school. I tried for 4 years to get 18D as a Navy Corpsman. I enjoyed my experience as an FMF Corpsman with Marine infantry, but I feel like I didn’t get as much training as I wanted/ needed. Now 36 I feel like I’m too old for that shit 😂 but hindsight is always 20/20 and I don’t ragret anything not even a single letter. Thanks for all the motivation you bring with your videos brother!
The drive to go further. I was in actual fire fights, in dire situations over seas. I was in a hasty position, dug in fox hole in Kuwait border. Scuds and live fire over head, In Mopp 4 ( thats full biochemical suit) Even though outward i acted and performed perfectly my duties, then I would have never said anything, can say it now, I was so in tears scared, big grown man laying in that fox hole, crying in fear.. i thought about family and my girlfriend back home. Many soldiers today do really know about this kind of communion today. I f they have been in that situation, they would know exactly what Im saying..total brother and sisterhood with that emotion weve gone through. its that emotion you go through when you are on the battle front, face in the dirt, scared that you might die, knowing you might never see anyone you love again, know that you might feel the most horrific pain of dying...that fear that cripples you. That is a feeling you will never forget. You will always remember that moment your company went into fire mission. It will change you forever. I will never forget those moments of being face down and crying like a little child, that humility of begging god.
I’m determined to go to ranger school no matter how many setbacks I get. I will get there.

@@emmanuelawosusi2365 Get an option 40 contract if you want to be a part of the 75th ranger battalion. If not you can volunteer to go to ranger school once you get to your unit if you meet what ever requirements. Again one gets you SOF missions the other teaches you some leadership and basic level knowledge of tactics.

This is great information - all of your videos are incredibly informative. IMHO it is good to hear solid viewpoint from someone who embraced the suck and succeeded (and you did so later in your career which is no small feat I feel). I was on active duty and a Signal NCO, spent most of my career on Bragg mostly in Div then the other end of Ardennes. Way back in the mid/late-90's, a small group of us who regularly jumped / humped radioes supprting the 3rd Bde / SIGO had the wild idea and started rucking our arses off to prep for Pre-Ranger but Division was not giving out any slots to the Bastard Brigade at that time. It made us hungry, partnering with the Infantry ... one tab was not enough (yeah, we were greedy :) ). Back then and on rare occasion, we'd see a Senior/NCO arrive that had the tab; moreso with the company commanders and bn staff. Nevertheless, much admiration to those who endured and don the Ranger tab. Keep up the great work.

The hard part of RS is not passing the school, the difficult part is living up to that Ranger Tab for the rest of your life.

I’m 16 planing on becoming a ranger. I’ve been hitting the gym and going for runs preparing for basic and ranger school. I know if I don’t start now then later it will be harder. Watching your videos helps me have better knowledge on what I hope I will go into.
I’m a 40 year old surgeon with no military background entering who has decided to join the army through direct commission. I’ve become obsessed with trying to go to ranger school, but mostly get negative feedback. Is it crazy for me to 1) think I can make it through ranger school at my age and 2) to think I can get a spot after joining AMEDD?
Travis. I was in basic with a 45 year old man who scored a 560+ on the current AFCT. keep in mind. I'm in AIT now but this man was fit at his age. I just thought telling you this would open your eyes to older men joining the military
