That's mostly because life and death fights rarely start off evenly. It'll almost always start off with a sucker punch and with a weapon and/or multiple assailants. He's talking about sports combat here. Boxing, mma, wrestling, etc.
Just sparring and more sparring after alot of drills and practise, there is no short cut. My trainer once told me that, you train at 100% of the time because when you fight or spar your only gonna be less than 50% efficient till you had lots of experience.
That's so true I use to have this bad habit where whenever I punch/combo I held my breath then after that I breathed heavily..... I always used to wonder why I got gassed quickly
There is an Eastern method called “pranayama” which means something like breath-control. It is closer to Eastern definitions of breath as “breath of life” or Prana, the Taoist “Chi”. In essence ‘control of the life-force’ through breathing. I’ve heard that controlled breathing through your nose is crucial too. It is a fundamental of Yoga.
Not to mention that most people who decide to start fights also don't have the physical fitness for it. I've seen fat dudes in the gym go for way longer than idiots half their size.
