Odd time signatures should feel natural, and Marco talks about how to “make yourself at home”, break down odd meters, and count them in a comfortable way (like humming the subdivisions and making the counting musical). It’s much easier to build freedom when you can find the groupings that make the most sense to you.
Marco’s style is especially cool because he often preserves the backbeat, even though he’s working in odd time signatures.

Okay, Marco is the most complete drummer I have ever seen. Though he might be the most technical drummer in the universe, he plays so musically in the first song. Every part is so perfect. And he grooves like ...the drum sound and the cymbals are fantastic. Perfect mix. Marco is INCREDIBLE. And such a humble guy. An idol!

@@TheAnimystro that was the best setup of all SW albums. Not that the others were bad, on the contrary. But H.C.E. and the raven really achieved creatively a godlike tier as they delved into the progressive corners of SW's universe.
There are so many amazing drummers alive today, and Many that have passed on, But this man has to be in the top 10 of all time to ever live, Or have lived.

i was introduced to Marco via the Dream Theater auditions. the pure joy and euphoria he expresses while playing is one of the most sincere gratifying things I witness. I'm glad to be alive while he is. Remarkable.

Marco Minneman is such a nice guy. I met him before a performance from the Aristrocrates in my hometown in the Netherlands. He is very approachable, even before a performance.
I'm not a drummer but I'll always make time to watch a Marco video. He really focuses on making everything he does, no matter how weird or technical, sound natural and energetic. I could watch him play all day.
Marco is insane! I Love the way he play with a smile on his face, he really enjoy what he play! Thanks for this Drum Class!

There's so much awesome drummers today... but Marco is still one of those I enjoy to see playing so much... so fun seeing him playing!
Remarkable!!! I am a music connoisseur from Indonesia, I have listened to and enjoyed various musical genres, but this is the first time I have seen a drummer able to play drums with a tempo that is like a roller coaster and also able to unify the sound of his drumming with tones that might be strange if heard by people who is not used to listening to instrumental music made by cool-handed musicians, he does it perfectly!
Best thing ever that he didn't enter Dream Theater ! Way too creative to be with James LaBrie !

15/16 is not hard as it sounds. Take 4/4 and delete one sixteenth note. Sounds almost like you’re just coming in on the upbeat, a tad early.

I'm not a drummer, but Marco's drumming has always astonished me. He plays incredibly intricate pieces of music and makes it look effortless! I've heard some of his songs from The Aristocrats and it really leaves me speechless.
And the fact that he can manage different (and odd) time signatures at the same time... It's like taking coordination and laterality to inhuman levels.
This man is just Unreal! Marco you are a wonderful human being, I'm so glad I could have taken a picture with you out of the Steven Wilson venue in Milan some year ago. You bring joy to that drums!

Marco Minneman is one of the most underrated drummers of all time. The guy is a genius.....beyond total mastery of the instrument, his creativity in using that mastery is mind blowing. Sometimes its hard to even get your head around the things he is doing behind the kit. He IS the innovation curve when it comes to orchestration and unique rhythm patterns.

This is an incredible drummer/musician.Maybe one of the best 4-5 progressive drummers that exist in this time period.Not only for the amazing technique but mostly for the sound and the dynamics that he can produce.And this specific DW set is nearly perfect!

Yeah, he always had good posture though. I was watching his old dvd from 2001 and his posture is the same. It's funny how low he sits though, since he's 6'5".
In the beginning of my music revolution. I am a multi-instrumentalist in order of passion and talent(guitar, drums,bass)
With each and everyone I believed "theory" and "time" was nothing and at the least no freedom to do what you want and or like. I always said" I can feel it, I dont need a click"
And I didnt with my first band in high school, I could get away with it I was probably the best drummer in my high school but until I got in the real world of bands, not being able to work with a click KILLED ME. I realized alittle later (2015) that being fluent in theory and time is what leads to TRUE FREEDOM on any instrument . So self taught musicians I know we talk a big game, BUT we need to back it up !

I first saw him in The Montreal drum festival and fell in love with his feel..and now I like his work with Steven Wilson. he masters every aspect of the different techniques he's using..he's musical and fun to watch..just took my breath away. again
I first stumbled on to Marco bout 5 years ago , drums are in a whole different light ever since , The Aristocrats I gotta see before I die , ..I know I'll probably never play guitar again , but worth it to chance ...

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have been playing for nearly 3 years now but I am still a complete newbie when it comes to technical things and odd times.
These are, without a doubt, advanced techniques. Do not be discouraged. As the host says, use it as inspiration and motivation. Take away whatever you can. And also just appreciate the wonder that is Marco.

This man is amazing!!! Never really watched him play before. Always knew who he was, just never took the time to check him out. Shame on me for depriving myself!!! On another note, this is proof that you don’t need a $5-$10K DW kit to sound good! This is a Design Series Kit! It’s all about the player!!!
He has played in so many diverse styles. I think he is a rare occasion.
That is what I love from his playing , his freedom...and freedom in drumming in general!
Marco is driving a car with 28 cylinders when most of us have 6. Dude is just gifted! What amazes me most is how he lands his plane with all the creativity and intelligence. Most of us have ideas floating in our heads--he takes them and brings them to life. This is extremely high level learning. Lastly, most of us might get lucky and play in a good classic rock band consistently so as much fun this is, it has little outlet. Too much of this can make playing straight groove and time difficult.
The online audience goes wild! You got that right! That opening piece was astounding. I now resemble an allegator and I alege that Marco is the new master of the drumkit. He stands on the shoulders of giants such as Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio, Neil Peart, Stewart Copeland, Bill Bruford, John Bonham, Nick Mason, etc with incredible dexterity and balance with the mind of a composer and writer along with the heart of scientist/magician and performer. He's a world class act. That's for certain.

I've never seen Marco talk about music before. Glad to see a prog legend who actually understands odd time signatures (rather than joe shmo who says 15/16 is cool because odd). Anyone in music should listen to him talk about time signatures and counting vs feeling rhythms in the first 20min of this vid. Finally someone who gets it!

music should be FUN..... I think it's unhealthy that so many drummers COUNT etc. (I grew up as a tween listening to sick time signatures from the Mahavishnu Orchestra, King Crimson, MAGMA, ELP, et al... and I never ever count. I FEEL it all and play by FEELING. I refuse to count or make drumming academic.)
In fact, my fave time signature is 1/1.
(Every musician can put the accents (etc) anywhere they want. Everyone is at the same tempo, so it works fine!)(ELASTIC! Wheeee!)

your Langs and your Vais and ALL of them tell kids "START SLOW TO A METRONOME, and build your speed and accuracy", which KILLS THE FUN OF MUSIC. My way is start sloppy and wild and HAVE FUN EVERY TIME.... and you'll get tighter and tighter and tighter (same as TLang and the rest's more-UN-FUN way) but WITH ZERO % of the MONOTONY or "work-like" exercises. (And all other drummers say I'm brilliant, so evidently my way works! I've had a drumkit for TWO MONTHS and i'm
already doing insane stunts!)

Zildjian really makes the best cymbals. Remo makes the best drum heads. In my experience, I’ve met a great deal of players use Evans and Meinl as a reaction to the formers. What a player this guy is. Reminds me of Bonzo.
