I say it often, the term One Hit Wonder is a complex one because it doesn’t capture a band or their song or their career universally. No one would ever call Jimi Hendrix or Lou Reed or Frank Zappa one hit wonders or bob marley a no hit wonder. Ya that ’s right Bob Marley never charted a top 40 hit in the US. I think as a culture we are fascinated when an artist had one big chart hit that moved the world, because in a lot of cases we are shocked that they didn’t have more hits. Or the one hit is so overplayed and it begins to wear on us especially if it’s a novelty hit, that we want it to go away, but alas it can still take us back to the time we first heard and we are always curious what became of that artist or group. So that’s why we call them Bottle Lightning on this channel In our latest edition of bottled lighting we break down one of the most beloved songs of it’s time. A song so compelling it puts us in a trance whenever it comes on. It’s so magical that most people thought the singer songwriter behind it just made it up.
Marc Cohn, was trying to find his breakthrough and took a trip to Memphis and what unfolded was almost like a fairy tale of epic proportions. It was a gift. Marc Cohn is one of those amazing songwriters who’s catalog is so great that we are left scratching our heads of how his others songs weren’t massive on the charts. His entire debut album is chock full of great songs from Dig Down Deep, my personal favorite of his. Silver thunderbird, and True Companion, one of the greatest love songs of it’s time, how the three of these didn’t swarm the charts is a head scratcher. The song that did go to #13 on the hot 100 and was nominated for song of the year for 1990 was Walking In Memphis.
A song that is as beloved today as it was when it was released. It was covered last year on Saturday Night Live by Pete Davidson with a guest appearance by Cohn himself as Walking in Staten a homage to the bagel joints and pizza places in his native borough while sporting an “I Love Staten Island” shirt. - Zábava

It’s an excellent song. I’m sorry it only took me until today to discover it.

The Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame should be in Memphis, and this should be one of the songs about Memphis that is played there every day.

Whenever this song comes on the radio, I can't help smiling. It never gets old.
It’s a gem.
I moved from Memphis to Nashville in 1990 and when this song was released in 1991 it got heavy airplay in Tennessee. When I first heard it, I fell in love with it. I didn't need a music video to visualize it-- real-life memories of those places mentioned in the song were already in my head. Every time I hear it, it takes me back to my days of living in Memphis when I was a young man and the world was my oyster. To this day, this is one of those songs that, whenever I hear it, I have to stop whatever I am doing and just listen. Although I already knew Marc's story, this was a great pick for a behind-the-music breakdown. Thanks, Adam! 😎

In my mind this has to be one of the top ten greatest pop/rock songs ever written. It’s perfect really… the marriage of lyric and melody, Marc’s vocal, and the track, is just sublime. It transports you to another place and time.

I had never heard of this guy or his music so I took a few listens to this song and I have to agree!
If you told me I could keep only 20 distinctly American songs from the entire 20th century, and I'm talking all the way back to Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, you name it, I would include Walking in Memphis. It seems to embody almost the entire history of American music and tells a story of personal regeneration with universal resonance. In addition, the craftsmanship of the arrangement, the performance, and the production is about as perfect as it gets. Every note and nuance works in service to the song. And it's just a kickin' good tune!
What a great interview, and the best part is how happy Marc appears to be.
I had the distinct pleasure of singing this song in a musical ten years ago and it brought the house down every night! People just LOVE it!
Such a feel good song! Brings back a lot of memories with my friends from back then. Most of us were young Elvis fans and wanted to visit Graceland. I did, a few years later with my family.

In 1985 is when I discovered Christian Rock/Metal and gathered a huge collection up until 1993. I had the paring of great music with a great message.
It’s like a conversation with the Holy Spirit.

This is one of the most perfect songs ever recorded. I remember seeing the video on MTV in 1991 and being completely blown away. I immediately went out and bought the album, and like you, I cannot understand why there weren't more top 40 hits from it. I actually Lent my copy of the album to my ex-brother-in-law during his wedding So True Companion could be their wedding song. Interesting you chose this tune at this time because about a week ago, for some reason I just started playing a bunch of reaction videos to this tune. And I always wondered if Marc was actually Jewish, and in the commentary on one of those videos I found out he was. The line he sings, " are you a Christian son? Ma'am I am tonight!" Always made me wonder if he was a fellow member of My Tribe. I was so glad to know that he is. I grew up like you did, with music a very important part of my upbringing. First time I heard this, I got every single reference from WC handy to Carl Perkins, to Elvis, to the Reverend Al Green. The whole song is like a history lesson. And the passion came through loud and clear. Thank you for this one professor

"True Companion" was my wedding song as well! I am a HUGE Marc Cohn fan and I've met him on a couple occasions. He's an amazing guy and absolutely wonderful to see in concert.
My wife & I saw Cohn perform in Annapolis, MD in October of 2019 and were amazed at his talent and voice. He's never quite achieved 'super stardom', but damn this man can fill a room with music that warms a soul. His song "True Companion" was also our first dance at our wedding and a number of friends asked "Who does that song?!?". When we told them and referenced his hit "Walking in Memphis", they had no idea of his other music. I can say thank you for the memories.
Great that he is/was still touring and sharing his soulful voice that puts the current batch of wannabees and tryhards to shame. And he looks in great health too.
I have had the pleasure of attending a couple of Marc's shows in small theater settings. Through his music, lyrics and stories, he conveys the essence of his music to the audience in a very personal way. I am forever grateful for Marc sharing his life stories with us.
I would love to see him in concert. Wonder if he has any upcoming shows.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 He plays almost constantly from what I can tell. We have a theatre in our city that seats 300 people and he plays here probably once every couple of years. Great show, definitely worth seeing. One thing that struck me is that he's as much a guitar guy as a piano guy, which I didn't expect.

I first heard this one when I was a young teenager, but it hit me hard even then. I couldn't have expressed why, but it resonated because it felt true even when I didn't know it was. Marc Cohn's "WiM" was a transformative experience for me. It shaped my musical taste toward songs whose lyrics could be felt and not just listened to and processed. It was all about the meaning and feeling, and it led me backwards to soul and blues and forward to Americana and folk. When I was a kid, I had to fly to visit my dad a couple times per year and back then the airplanes had "radio" stations programmed that you could listen to. Delta had this song on a permanent rotation, and I must have listened to it hundreds of times. I would listen as I flew into the Deep south, and it would remind me that there was beauty to be found, even there. Thirty something years later, this song hits me at a different level and reminds me of places I have been and the people I have met. It reminds me that we all have a story to tell, and that there is beauty in the world. For me, it doesn't get much better than this one. Thank you so much for this interview and 18 minutes that made my day better.

Wow, what a great story, and what a genuine bloke he is. I always loved this song but after hearing how it came about, I love it even more. There is a genuine story behind this song and the words actually mean something. I thought it was just great phrasing and emphasis, but he had actually experienced each of those lyrics before he sat down to write and record them. Amazing. I reckon I'll have to go find the lyrics and listen to the song with headphones on and really listen next time... Is it just me or do most males not worry so much about the lyrics? Although I must say, songs I learnt when I was a teenager and early 20s I can pull out of my brain like it was just yesterday, even if I might not have heard them for decades. How does that work? Walking in Memphis is an incredibly romantic and melancholy song that somehow channels optimism, and I’ve always liked it a lot. You know, so many of your episodes make me play the tunes several times. So thankful for on demand streaming music services!
One of the best songs ever. Thank you for sharing this one, prof. This song always takes me back to a little bar in Virginia and the young man who would sing it for an adoring crowd. Joe passed away in an accident not long after that but, for me and a few others, this song will always bring him back. At least for a while.

This song is a classic. Every time I hear it now, I think of my dear departed sister. We both loved this song. We thought it was a masterpiece of a song. Pure perfection!!!!
I was producer for a small play in community theater. It was a piece we were taking to competition, which was about the only recognition we get for the work. The play was "Graceland" about 2 women who show up at the gates to Graceland, each wanting to be the first to enter when Graceland opened to the public. Having seen Elvis from front row seats (with my Mom) shortly before he died, I was a hard rock fan until that night. I became a born-again Presleyterian, truly a conversion. But I was having a hard time getting our actresses to capture the heart of the play. Amazingly, Mr. Cohn's song hit the airwaves and I had them listen to it. They got it. We won West Coast competition and placed 3rd nationally. That song helped them, and me, carry the bigger message to an audience of hard-core theater people who needed to be moved and transported and elevated by the work. We didn't use the song in the play, we didn't have to. It was enough to lift the actresses to understand what their message to the audience should be and they delivered it. Please thank Mr. Cohn for me. I am moved every time I hear it.

His first album was indeed a home run in my eyes. I compare it to Tracy Chapman’s first album, it’s a perfect album and I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t have a copy of their own, I just can’t understand why.
Every song is amazing, but Walking in Memphis is on a whole other level, every word is perfect. My favourite line is “She said, "Tell me are you a Christian child?" And I said, "Ma'am, I am tonight".”

I sincerely apologize, but it was today that I discovered Marc Cohen and his absolute masterpiece. That’s a shame, since I can name over 200+ other artists from the rock era. I have a habit of judging things too early, but I can confidently say this time that this song gets a 11/10 in my books.

I went to Marc Cohn's first ever gig he got paid for, at the Dominion Theatre in London in 1991 (or 92?). It was just him and Jeff Peevar and it was amazing. As well as the great music, he was extremely funny all the way through. He sang humorous comments in the middle of his songs. He kept talking about how the record company expected him to have a band, which he didn't have. He did WiM twice. Early on in the set he sang it solo and sang "if I had a band this is where they'd start playing". He did the song again as the very last song and he had the whole audience sing it with him.
It was one of the best concerts I have ever been to.
The way he tells the story during the interview, is it any wonder what a hit this song was?? Some folks have the ability to put you somewhere. To paint a picture in your minds eye and make you FEEL the moment. One of your best episodes Adam!
For better or for worse it reminds me of where I grew up. I was born in Mississippi about two hours south of Memphis. Bless him for this song. I take it for granted, but I know the area means a lot to so many people. I'm glad it helped provide him with the inspiration he needed to get his career going. He seems like a lovely man, and is a wonderful storyteller.

This song always hits deeply into my soul. I never quite understand why, but it makes sense after this great interview and the time of its release. I had been in Atlanta for a couple months when I first heard Marc sing "Walking in Memphis," and as a mid-20s guy, I was really finding my footing as a man. Now at 57 and listening to the song again with my headphones on and the world set aside for 4 minutes, I understand the song's power. The coming-of-age story that Marc told through this song still makes me emotional. Great interview and great memories.

I moved from Louisina to Memphis in the 8th grade. I was born in 1961. My school bus used to go on Graceland Blvd. right past Elvis' house every day & Elvis was still alive! We eventually moved North to Dyersburg Tennessee straight on the Mississippi River. Since I used to play the piano for church even at that age......I can really relate to this song! And may I add that it is a beautiful song! Thank you so much for sending me back there. I live in Colorado now

I love Marc Cohn! He did an anniversary tour for this album a few years ago and played the album from start to finish and it was an amazing experience. He sounds as great live as he does on the record!

This is one of the only songs where I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard it. I was driving down High Street when it came on the radio.
By the time the second chorus came on, I had pulled over because I couldn’t focus on anything else. Incredibly moving song and I would say it was in my most favourite songs ever.
I had to actually order in the CD because my music shop didn’t have it and hadn’t heard of Cohn. I told them they’d better order more than just the one for me. They told me they ordered 10 and the only one they had left when I picked it up was the one they were holding for me and they had had to order more.
I cannot even listen to it while I’m working. I just had to listen in awe and amazement at his powerful voice.

I love this song, it's such a beautiful piece. At the time every song with a piano caught my attention for some reason but this was definitely the stand out and I still love hearing it. I always figured this was based on reality, with a little bit of license that most songs use (i.e. the ghost). It's a great story.

This is the first time I’ve heard of him. I listened to the song and immediately fell in love.
I have never commented on your videos. However, being a lifelong Memphian (my father, Grandfather, Great Grand father also) being born here and being a huge music fan I can't say enough about that song. I'm 71 now and I think back all about living here and the so many things that have gone wrong here and put us in such a bad light. So, I think about all the fabulous, fabulous music from this place I can't help but smile and think that no matter what else went down here we have the MUSIC!!!! This is the home of American music, The Blues, Rock and Roll, Jazz nowhere else can make the claim. So when I heard "Walking in Memphis for the first time I knew that guy was on a journey to find out and he stumbled into the absolute right place to become enlightened. Thanks for interview him.....but I already knew what he was going to say. You can't live here or come here for the music and not know and he summed it up perfectly.
I have watched so many of these videos and interviews - this may be my favorite. What a joy to hear Marc Cohn tell his story. As inspirational as the Memphis trip he talks about. Awesome job on this one!!!!
Walking in Memphis and On The Dark Side by John Cafferty were 2 GREAT songs! Absolutely love this song. A great little mini history lesson from Memphis.

Certain songs are special in that they transport you to a place you have never been. Rainy Night In Georgia, Wichita Lineman... This is right up there with those masterpieces. Great interview!
In the past, whenever WALKING IN MEMPHIS came on the radio i listened intently because of his emotional voice and the fantastic story he tells. However, after watching this interview, whenever i hear this beautiful song the reverence will be magnified because i'll know he really did go to Memphis, and Mrs Muriel was real, and she really did play at The Hollywood on Fridays. And i doubt if i'll ever forget how she gave him permission to "Let it go now" regarding his mother's early passing and his fear about his parents concern for his happiness and success. Mr Cohn is such a nice guy. It made me smile to see how happy he was to tell his story. Like John Lennon said, people will see and hear this interview and take from it what matters most to them...
