This song is everything. When she tours in America, she performs in arenas, but when she is in Latin America she performs in stadiums. I saw this show at Estadio Azteca, October 2018, The stadium packed with 90,000 people, all of us singing at the same time this song under the rain. She’s magical.

I'm from the Philippines 🇵🇭 and I grew to love Shakira since 2002. I don't speak Spanish but I would sing along with some of her ballads.
The reason people is crying is because this song just hits f'n hard in the heart. We can all totally cry to this song once we have felt pure love and felt we're never going to love again the way we did that time we found our first true love and suddenly it's over but the sincere love feeling remains forever because of what they taught us. I'll try to do my best to translate the lyrics (not so literally, I'll try them to make sense)

Just so you know, that song is way too special and meaningful for her and for her long term fans... She wrote it when she was a teenager, the song is about heartbreak, the song came out when a lot of us were around her age so must people between 30 to 50 can relate, she wrote it in her old poetic and metaphoric writting style, and this is a song she doesnt usually sing in her tours. Actually, I think she included it in her first tour (around 1999) and the she added it in her most recent tour (2015 i think). Every single Shak fan, and even non-shak fans love that song. It was a old classic from the late 90s.
