      I think guests realize that BUT the crew is responsible for the safety of the guests lives, so when the crew is not properly trained I think they deserve a pretty good dose of hostility. Honestly, wouldn't you be mad if you pulled a life preserver out of a closet and discovered they were only for decoration? How is that any different from a crew member jumping overboard and leaving passengers to fend for themselves? I'm not suggesting that happened here. I'm just saying there is a responsibility that goes along with the job.

THEY ARE TAKING PEOPLE'S LIVES IN THEIR HANDS. So don't give me your bullshit. THEY BECOME LEGALLY CULPABLE!!! Its just like a hotel manager telling you, "Go back to your room and well have this fire out in a jiffy." If you die in your room, the hotel and the manager are both culpable.

    Shouldn't every cruise ship have a few old sailor types to yell at the passengers when this happens. "Aye, she's an old ship but she's still tough as the men who crew her. Stay in ye seat lest ye end up in Davey Jones' locker!"

  • @ChrisCooper312
    @ChrisCooper312 Před 6 měsíci +1

    This was a good example of a "swiss cheese" situation. The weather was bad, but not beyond what the ship could cope with. The engine oils tanks were low, but still within limits. The waves though caused the oil to slosh around in the tanks, and as it did it trigged a low oil alarm that shut down the engines. A ship in a storm with no engines (or a sailing ship that looses it's sails) is a very dangerous place to be. Luckily none of the holes lined up that day. It shows how risks can add up though, and too many "it's just within limits" can lead to serious incidents.

      The stewards told them to stay seated because they knew that it was important for the passengers to be paying attention to the subsequent incoming instructions after the alarm had gained everyones attention. In this case that message was going to muster stations A or B.
      Imagine if the the captain had decided muster station A was unsafe and the passengers ignored the stewards and started moving the second they heard the alarm? You'd have a good chunk of passengers running off towards muster station A (the one they'd been told to go to in the drill), meaning they'd possibly be running into danger and at the very least in the wrong direction... Then you have to compound that most of them will be suffering from target fixation ("get to the point they'd been told is safe during the drill, muster point A") while being distracted by the human traffic, the rolling ship, keeping their families together, oh and now that annoying man on the PA system is saying something about muster stations B and C or whatever ("which obviously isn't important to us, because our muster point is station A"). Yes they could just repeat the message over and over but everyone will get to where they need to be far faster if they just stopped and listened in the first place instead of reacting without consideration.
      That's why the stewards told them to stay seated when they heard the alarm, it's not maliciousness, it's not incompetence, it's because it makes sure people are going in the right directions from the start, instead of going where ever they'd been drilled to go, which might be wrong (afterall it's not called an emergency because everything going as planned :P).
      Humans are really, stupid, especially when they're panicking and telling them to stay seated helps said humans get the information which kept them safe. Now in a lot of cases yes a delay in reaction can make emergencies worse (if you hear the bing bong on a plane, you put your seatbelt on that instant) and it is entirely possible that the drill was correct and everyone should go to where they were drilled to go. But by taking a few extra seconds to make sure you're going in the right direction, you can save yourself a lot of potential danger and travel time in getting to safety.

They haven't got any clue what's going on, the ship is rolling badly so they order the passengers to stay where they are in order to not get hurt by flying furniture, tripping, or getting crushed in a panic. If you'd pay attention, the emergency signal first gives orders to the crew - "For all crew, get into your emergency positions". They did exactly what you want them to do, calm the situation, tend to the safety of the passengers, and wait for orders.

      Do you know that in the Concordia debacle that one of the key points of confusion was the staff giving conflicting directions to the passengers.

The drill teaches passengers and crew that when the distress signal is sounded, to proceed to the muster station. If the emergency was such that there was so much extra time to sit and pay attention, they would be making announcements, not sounding the one mechanism that unequivocally directs people to a muster station.
      It's like deploying an emergency chute on an airplane and telling everyone to stay in their seats with the seatbelt fastened. Or pull a fire alarm in a building and expect people to sit still until the fire department gets there.

      This Emergency happend outside Norway, in a storm. There was issued a storm warning. and most ships, went into dock or avoided operating in open sea.
      The announcement was automatic.
      The reason they wanted passenger to remain seated, was due to the weather was bad enough that they couldn't operate lifeboats safely. So the Norwegian air force Rescue helicopters and the Norwegian oil industry Rescue helicopters was airlifting passengers off the ship. They had 6 helicopters airlifting 460 of 915 passengers evacuated within 8-10 hour (each helicopter take 15 passengers and have to fly a bit of a distance, and it was only space for 1 helicopter to lift, on rotation).
      Due to many combinations, but mostly due to low lubrication oil level, all engine automatically stopped. The lub. oil level was within limit, but the ship was in 15 meter waves and due to this, the lub. oil in the oil tank, started to move back and fort, and occasionally exposed the drain pipe. ( Engines can only run without lubricant for a few minutes before being damaged)
      In the morning the weather was calm enough, that one of the huge anchor handling offshore vessel, could attach a tow line + Viking sky managed to start one of it's engines.
      note:
      - The anchor of Viking Sky was donated to a local museum for a symbolic sum.
      - the concentration of rescue helicopters on this rescue 4 of 12 rescue helicopters (air force) in addition of those 2 helicopters from oil industry. Norway had to repositioned rescue helicopters more North to still be able to cover rest of Norway including oil-rigs in the North Sea (or they had to shut down),
      - Gave Denmark and Sweden responsibility over the entire Skagerak (area between Norway, Sweden, Denmark) - - A Danish rescue helicopter was repositioned to Kristiansand in South Norway.

      Nah, you'll be fine. Even if the ship sinks, there is plenty of room on the lifeboats. Well actually, lifeboats are packed like sardine cans when filled to capacity, but I mean you'll get off the ship safely. I think you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning than going down with a ship.

    Sounding the alarm for hitting some heavy waves? It sounds more like there’s a hole in the ship lol

    • @heuhen
      @heuhen Před 2 lety

      This is MS Viking sky, they was in a Storm on the Norwegian coast, where the waves can be quite ruff (that day they had waves up to 15 meters). They had a full engine blackout, due to there was low lubrication oil level in the lubrication tank (within limit) and when the ship rocket back and forth the pipes in the tank got exposed, and limited the circulation from the lubrication oil tank, to the engine. The engine can only run a couple of minutts without lubrication before it get severely damaged or destroyed. Due to this the engine computer automatically shut down all engines.
      Luckily the anchor they dropped managed to get a hold, and that is what you see in this video.

    Conflicting information. Stay seated but go to your muster-station. WTF ?

    • @Logarithm906
      @Logarithm906 Před 2 lety

      If by "conflicting" you mean sequential instructions... The stewards told them to stay seated because they knew that it was important for the passengers to be paying attention to the subsequent incoming instructions after the alarm had gained everyones attention. In this case that message was going to muster stations A or B.
      Imagine if they decided muster station A was unsafe and they started moving the second they heard the alarm? You'd have a bunch of dozy passengers running off towards muster station A, possibly into danger and at the very least in the wrong direction... Then you have to compound that a bunch of them will be suffering from target fixation ("get to the point they'd been told is safe during the drill, point at A") while being distracted by the human traffic, the rolling ship, keeping their families together, oh and that annoying man on the PA system saying something about muster stations B and C ("which obviously can't be important to us, because our muster point is station A").
      Humans are really, stupid, especially when they're panicking and telling them to stay seated helps said humans get the information which keeps them safe.

  • @user-YuHaoHuang
    @user-YuHaoHuang Před 2 lety

    That's a muster alarm though

    • @heuhen
      @heuhen Před 2 lety

      it's a muster alarm yes. but they crew with the approval of the captain, changed the plans. This is from "MS Viking Sky" that decide to ignore storm warnings and went to sea on Norways west coast. and had a full engine blackout due to low lubrication level (it was within limits... so long it was fairly calm sea.... But they experienced up to 15 meters waves in the North sea)
      at a muster alarm you are supposed to get to muster station for subsequently enter your life raft, but the weather was so bad that using lift rafts was dangerous and have to be last resort.

      Not this time. They was in extreme bad weather, with no engine power and anchor out. but they declare emergency to get all passengers attention and have them listen to the crew. The crew wanted them to be seated because it would be dangerous to walk around. (try to imagen an 80 year old lady trying to stay on here feet, while the ship is rocking around)
