On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video let me know if you'd like to see more videos of this nature in the future. Thanks again and take care, much Love.
Great video as always! But doesn´t the Eurofighter carry the Meteor instead of the AMRAAM? And would it be possible to make a bandit unknown in the Eurofighter?
F-22 Raptor VS Nine North Korean MIG-29's BVR
Yes, please.
@@Anarchy_420 raptor has just 8 internal hardpoints 2 of them fox 2 so its going to be atleast 1 kill with guns. would be funn to watch
@@blxuermaster9454 i think it carries a mix of it since you don´t need to many meteors and its larger and havier the the amraam
You got to love calling a missile designed to fly up a jet's tailpipe an ASRAAM. 😄
Definitely did it on purpose lmao
Lmao, How did I not notice until now?
LOL
You just know there was some steering committee early on in the project that was responsible for the naming conventions that spent an entire meeting giggling and trying to work up the courage to tell their commanding officers the name they had settled on.
It's the most British thing possible to give a very serious subject a rude yet descriptive acronym.
when going by sheer numbers of a2a kills, the gbu-10 trumps the meteor 1-0...
😂
GBU-10*
I assume you're referring to when the F-15E scored an AA kill against a Hind I believe it was, in which case that was a GBU-10 not a 12.
@SpaceKraken and @Augie Hicks thanks i'll change it
@@augiehicks4588 I still wanna see that kill reproduced by Growling Sidewinder eventually, would be a really cool fucking video. He's been doing so much A-10 A2G recently, why not F-15 A2G? Let's pickle ourselves a Hind eh?
"Today in Growling Sidewinder School"... I've learned more about fighter jets by watching your videos in the last couple of years than in my entire life.
this!
I really like this educational format, I always wished there was more stuff like this on youtube. Thanks for the quality content and info!
Maybe in the future would you consider talking about the history of RWR? I'd be curious to know how it works/how it came about
I respectfully second that request!
very informative content, perhaps a similar vid for the soviet/eastern munitions, where data is available...? or a comparison of west vs east.
AIM9 R27?
AIM120 R77?
etc.
A better comparison would be aim9 and r73 because the r73 is intended for close range launches, whereas the r27 is intended for medium ranges.
Ian McCollum : "Today on Forgotten Weapons we have Growling Sidewinder, he's going to introduce us to one of the favorite weapon systems for fighter pilots to hate on, the Aim Seven Radar guided missile."
GS "Thanks for having me Ian. The Aim Seven Sparrow, shared none of the pin point accuracy of that little feathered hunter we see in the wild, the aerial acrobat it was named after, plucking insects out of the air with stunning precision... this thing is more like a near sighted seagull that notices nothing smaller than a garbage barge... illuminated by a search light. Let's examine why for a moment..."
More videos like this please! I love the little educational/ historical backstories you occasionally put out here for us.
That video of the F16 landing gear doors with Sparrows was super neat
I know right never knew about that mounting
Excellent explanation @GS. These mini documentaries are packed with information and well produced.
thank you very much much appreciated.
Quite different than your usual style of video, but I liked it. Very well organized and put together. Good information that we can probably see put to use in future videos. Nice job, GS.
7:57 Oops! Your final statement is opposite to the entirety of the rest of the video. I heard it as "It can hardly be argued that the AMRAAM is one of the world's best air-to-air missiles." I think you meant to say that one cannot argue AGAINST the proposition that the AMRAAM is one of the world's best air-to-air missiles. Perhaps it should have been, "It can't be disputed that the AMRAAM . . . ." or "It can hardly be disputed that . . . ." Great video!
I don't know--the MDBA _Meteor_ has to potential to be even better due to its enormous range (more than twice that of AMRAAM).
That's not taking AIM-120D into consideration with a range of 90 miles and certainly not The AIM-260 JATM with an obviously classified range however it's been quoted to have a range TWICE as much as The AIM-120D lol which true range is also classified ;)
The *stated* range might be twice that of the AMRAAM, but the numbers we civilians see are totally inaccurate and meaningless.
@@DefinitelyNotEmma the stated IOC date is 2022, the Air Force could just be secretive about it for all we know
The best thing with the meteor is not the range. It's its ramjet propulsion that makes its flight energy profile totally different from a traditional missile.
It has more maneuverability even during it's final flight phase thanks to it's capacity to keep burning propellant continuously.
@@ZratP exactly, it’s not about range but how lethal it is at different ranges. It’s no point going a long range if you can’t hit anything. Ramjet stay’s lethal.
for me, Meteor remains the better existing Fox-3 missile
i really love your diversity of videos man. especially the dogfight and multicrew ones. but i didn't know i'd love your educational videos about military aviation and weaponry. big fan of your DCS radar tutorials btw.
thank you man, I really appreciate your support. Much Love.
GS, man absolutely love this style of video. You have a different perspective to other CZcamsrs who do military info channels since you get to use a lot of the equipment and are intimately familiar with the shortfalls and benefits of each! Would LOVE to see more videos like this on other weapons (AIM-9, 7, 54, etc…)
Great video growling you should really do it more of these you have an endless catalog of aircraft and weapons to choose from !
Can't wait for the next one it's a great change of pace just like how the ground videos were not sure if many others would agree but I liked it!
While the AIM-120 series is an excellent platform it realistically does not hold up to the likes of the Meteor or perhaps even the PL-15, the DOD and the U.S military are acutely aware of this and are attempting to alleviate this with the development of the AIM-260 JATM, what little we know of that program (relatively), it appears to be the next gold standard in long range ARH missile technology.
So the meteor and PL-15 have been used in air combat? Nope. Speculation does no determine who is better.
@@manofchaitea6904 So the F-22 and F-35 aren't better than an F-15C and F-16?
Because the first two have never seen combat, the older two have 😉
@@johannafischer8915 except the F22 and F35 have? They're all great platforms.
If we look at Desert Storm, we can surmise that a true full air battle with fourth gen fighters still requires visual identification or clear awacs id to choose to engage enemies with fox-3 missiles. The AMRAAM fits that envelope so perfectly. Long range seems to be a full WW3 idea.
@@FancyNoodlez when? Against air opponents?
They have the AIM-260 and the Peregrine missile coming soon
Nice job on the mini-documentary! I would definitely like to see more like this.
The Ass Ram missile, although very capable, lacked the required lubricant hydraulics for optimal performance during high G spot maneuvers. The missile was later banned by the Geneva convention.
I think the METEOR is in a category above the AMRAAM.
According to what actual combat evidence?
@@manofchaitea6904 the same actual combat evidence that put the F-22 as the BETTER air dominance fighter jet in the world, even with a 0 score.
🙃
As i say, the METEOR is in a level ABOVE the AMRAAM.
@@cayancesardeoliveira5708 You absolutely owned him there 😂😂😂
@@cayancesardeoliveira5708 Actually that not true. The f-22 have seen mock combat against other platforms like the f-15, f-16 in which the f-22 could beat them without being seen.
@@peterp4037 same as METEOR 🤷🏻♂️. The NEZ of the METEOR is 3x the NEZ of the AMRAAM. In mock combat against planes with AMRAAM, the fighter with METEOR outrange the fighter with AMRAAM by far.
Well one thing is for sure, we can say with absolute certainty that the AMRAAM is one of the air to air missiles ever built.
blasphemy
I don’t know about this, I think it is air to space
6:11 Subtitles: "ass Ram" XD
Damn love this kind of video from you. Honestly your voice has some soothing quality to it, optimal especially when doing a short documentary about things that go pssssshhh BOOOM
Nice little documentary. As a European I'd enjoy a similar video about the Meteor :)
Fantastic video, man! Can you do more history videos like this? Specifically on the F 16 😎
That was a well put-together little mini documentary and I definitely didn't burst my sides when you said ass ram.
No. The MDBA Meteor is, hands down.
Raise your hand if you’ve been tested in combat
@@Aaron-wq3jz I don't have to taste a pint of Tim Taylors Landlord to know it's going to be bloody good. You just know it is. Same with Meteor.
@@MrHistorian123 And what if in its first actual combat use we manage to find out the AMRAAM is better? Many faces have had egg on it over weapons that were better on paper.
@@ChucksSEADnDEAD Please tell me HOW the AMRAAM will possibly be better. Given that the Meteor outperforms it in every single respect, I think that's highly unlikely.
And Meteor has been tested and performed to spec in every scenario.
mentions the gripen but not the rafale, what a chad move
The Meteor is the best missile. The AIM-120 is the most widely used
Not combat proven. In theory it could be the best, but currently the best combat proven air-to-air missile is the AMRAAM.
@@Penglish56 bruh "best combat proven is the amraam" you mean the sidewinder? which has been in service for almost 3x as long as the amraam, and has the most kills out of any A2A missile.
@@Doomsday499 considering the video is about medium-long range missiles, I don't think that really applies here.
@@Penglish56 AMRAAM estimated confirmed kills: 16
Sparrow estimated confirmed kills: 55
Phoenix estimated confirmed kills: 78
Interesting thought process you got going on.
Higher kill count doesn't equal better, unless you are trying to say that the Sparrow and AIM54 are better than the AMRAAM. The point I was making is that without having seen the Meteor in combat, it's impossible to say how it actually will perform and whether or not it is actually better than the AMRAAM.
Idk why you have to be so condescending either lol calm down
0:58 A fox 3 going active is called Pitbull or Husky depending if it goes active in Medium PRF or High PRF.
those sparrows on the F-16s gear doors are awesome lol
I'd love to see a video like this about the Meteor.
Okay, so here's a tactic you may not of heard about:
1 Fly with your radar on until you get a ping on the adversarial aircraft.
2 Turn off your radar and lower your airspeed to 350 knots.
3 Fire an AMRAAM
4 Wait the requisite time depending on the situation until the missile is nearing terminal guidance zone.
5 Turn your RADAR back on to give the missile guidance until terminal guidance kicks in.
6 Turn your radar back off.
7 Defend.
This stealthy maneuver may give you the advantage of not being as visible to enemies.
The missile knows where it is at all times.
It knows this because it knows where it isn't, by subtracting where it is, from where it isn't, or where it isn't, from where it is, whichever is greater, it obtains a difference, or deviation.
The guidance sub-system uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is, to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position where it was, is now the position that it isn't. In the event of the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has required a variation. The variation being the difference between where the missile is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too, may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was. The missile guidance computance scenario works as follows: Because a variation has modified some of the information the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is, however it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subracts where it should be, from where it wasn't, or vice versa. By differentiating this from the algebraic sum og where it shouldn't be, and where it was. It is able to obtain a deviation, and a variation, which is called "air"
Thank you, this is the comment I was looking for lol
you should do a 2022 setup tour, see what gear ur using in todays sim market, opinions on them to date and what not before the holidays and what not👀
I love this new way your videos are! I like how it’s very informative and a bunch of videos and pictures to watch. You are very good at making videos like this as I was paying attention the whole time 😂
I think the only 2 better medium-range missiles are PL-15 and Meteor
The "AssRam". You did that shit on purpose. I wasn't ready.
Missiles are like melee weapons and the aircraft; the weilder. Compared to other melee weapons, the AMRAAM may be outranged or less lethal, but in the hands of an F-22 or F-35, it's still going to be an incredible weapon.
Showing the Sparrows mounted to the gear bay doors just sent me on a rabbit hole... thanks...
Right?! I want to see more on that!
If the AIM-260 isn't already in production, it will be very soon.
Thank you for pointing out the Canadair contribution to the Sparrow II program. Douglas and the USN gave up on the Sparrow II in 1955. RCAF chose the Sparrow II and Falcon missile for the Avro Arrow with the Astra fire control system. I believe Canadair kept this weapons system alive to be improved to the AAMRAM we have today.
Python 5, thrust vectoring and more manuevering points that any other missile out something like 18 or 24, and speeds up upon impact i dont think any other missile speeds up upon impact. If what ive seen on them is true, those things will reacquire if it misses. Pretty sure you had a video on one no ?
No, AIM stands for Air Intercept Missile. Which is why the Sidewinder is the AIM-9 and the Sparrow is the AIM-7.
Well, he did say “The AIM-120 AMRAAM stands for Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile” which is what AMRAAM stands for.

I didn't know you did documentaries. Good show.
So the question "Is Amraam the best?" is answered by "one of the best"...
Which was obvious from the outset for anyone with a passing knowledge of AAM's (e.g. knowing what AAM means).

GS: my friend is the red devil in the f-18 vid shooting the missile. I showed him and he’s down to connect
This is such a cool concept! When watching DCS content, it can be kind of overwhelming all the different weapon info. Thanks for the good info!
Well, i wish we knew about the Meteor missile and JATM 260. Imagine getting smacked without any warning
Nicely done. Should of mentioned the unofficial name "Slammer", too. We don't know much about the AIM-260 yet, so naming the AIM-120 the 'best' is a bit difficult. 'Most Proven', 'Most Effective' (ie having an effect)? Certainly.
Best in terms of what? It most certainly beats the trial missiles in terms of availability. Also, while something is in trial, I would refrain it from comparing it with anything, or even qualifying it as a weapon. These are experiments, and usually have tons of unresolved issues (see Mk.14 torpedo for reference).
@@balazsfoldes4700 AIM-260 was _supposed_ to have an IOC of 2022, so it's probably well past trials by now. And yes, new weapons are almost always plagued with teething issues. We really can't say much more, though if it's supposed to replace the Slammer I would say it is to the AMRAAM what the AMRAAM was to the Sparrow. Time will tell.

Growling Sidewinder, this certainly is an informative and entertaining video💯. Also, I have to share that I can't help but imagine how contractors pitched the ASRAAM to the military. It probably went something like "The ASRAAM...for when you have a h*** ** for the bandit, it's the ideal choice." 😎😆

The military can make a 67 letter word salad a 4 letter acronym. In the F-22, the AMRAAM needs to be 'punched' out of the main weapons bays and into the turbulent air beneath the aircraft. They do this using the AVEL: AMRAAM Vertical Ejection Launcher.
In a feat of modern mastery of acronyms, the military took "Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missile Vertical Ejection Launcher" and made it just 4 letters.
My friends: "Missile designations are not gay, what are you talking about anon?"
Meanwhile: "We present our new state of the art short range air-to-air missile, the ASS-RAM"
Loved this video buddy. Keep them coming.

Hey GS I’d love to see a video where a jet like the F35 can shine, it’s obviously not strongest as a solo dog fighter but is really good in conjunction with other aircraft, could we see a video series where a given jet is set up for the most success, the mission plays to the strengths of the jet?
The offset videos are neat where a jet performs where it’s doesn’t play to its strengths but I think it would be neat to see a jet shine, is the F/A-18 hornet best as a dog fighter or more as a strike/attack aircraft; the A10 close air support videos are grey cuz we get to see what the A10 is built for

Could a missile use a heat seeker head for terminal guidance after being radar guided towards the target? This would eliminate the missile warning on the targets RWR gear. FOX 4?
I think this is where the MICA Missiles come under.
Apparently the Russians are working on multi seeker for R77 but its just a rumor for now. But you would still want a radar seeker for it to be a fox 3
Hello, that moment in the movie that shows the radar of the fighter, is that radar related to the F22??? If so, it is very interesting because there are very few films in which the F22 radar or a part of the F22 cockpit is shown, and I did not see any cockpit displays being shown in the rest of the films related to the F22, only the pilot showed them. Thank you for the interesting video you posted. Please post more of these videos if you have them
