Nahh, looks to me like Psychonauts 2 was just a whole other beast. They set out to make it a lot more polished than the first game, and to achieve that everything was rebuilt from scratch, often built differently and in less risky ways. I don't think there was any intent to sabotage speedrunners so much as a desire to make a better game that was less clunky and janky.

I want more developers like these guys. They laugh at their own failure and have fun of poking at it. And questioning and asking "why can't you do this? or why not add this?" and showing they want to make something more fun. Like the importance of talking to the cow. Others stress and focus on dead lines and just getting the product out, they just concentrate on that it's important that you talk to this cow

    • @Alistair
      @Alistair Před 9 lety +42

Hal Howard I'm using hacker in the original meaning of the word. Hackers are people who tinker and play with things in ways which they weren't intended to be used. Look at things like "lifehacks", that's hacking without using a computer. What everyone thinks of as "hacking" now, ie breaking computer security, was originally called "cracking".
And if you're wondering if I have any idea what I'm talking about, I've been playing about with computers since the mid 80s, used to make computer games and AI when I was a teenager, and studied computer science.

Its mostly because he was trying to perform. Thats what most speedrunners are, performers. They like the idea of presenting a spectacle to others y'know?
Not to bash his skills, he just interprets video games differently. More as a challenge to be conquered than a world to explore.
I think he would've enjoyed himself more if he was just sitting down and enjoying the earnest nature, comedy and provoking commentary that the game's known for. However, I'm sure he enjoyed the overall experience of meeting Double Fine, which I gotta say is an opportunity I wouldn't let pass.

Great and touching season finally. Honestly this is a great series and I hope it has a 2nd season as their is alot of great insight in the games making and you begin to actually understand what the developers were trying to achieve. While it has been done in print media you don't quite get the same connection as you can't hear the developers tone plus it's more fluid when they explain what they were doing as they watch it happen. Lion King was a strong start and this was an epic end.

Man I love Waterloo World so much, even though it has some of the most frustrating jumps in the game.
Edit: Wow, somehow I never saw the screaming faces in the sky outside the asylum until just now, that's creepy!

Thank you to everyone who made this game. Monkey Island 2, Grim Fandango, and Psychonauts are the pantheon of Tim. With an honorable mention (or demigod?) To Maniac Mansion 2...and Full Throtle. I love all of you.

This to me was by far the most entertaining episode. Having the dev team watch and comment on a speed runner "breaking" their game. All of the commentary was hilarious and I enjoyed the stories told during game play. Very insightful and thank you all for explaining in layman's terms everything that was happening in the technical side. So many great quotes, I've seen the video three times now.

Thank you guys from Double Fine and 2 Player Productions for the "Devs Play" series. Really enjoyed it!
I see that every episode was kind of an experiment to determine which direction should Season 2 go. For me - the most interesting episodes were the ones that had the developers of the given games in them: Ep1 (Lion King), Ep5 (Doom) and of course Psychonauts Ep6. The good things about those episodes is that they focused on showing the whole games or at least most significant chunks of it.
The approach from Eps 2-4 did not appeal to me as much, but it's also the interesting take. The best of those on my opinion is the Mother ep. with Ben Burbank because of the devotion to the games that you just can feel through Ben - it's amazing.

I remember when i was a kid, i spent a month trying to save $10 to buy a used copy of Psychonauts from GameStop.
The price dropped a bit by the time of purchase and my excited little self gave the change to a homeless woman.
Now I’m in my late 20s and i still go back about once a year because of the sheer fun, amazing quality of voices, and hilarious storytelling/writing. (Most games today have forgotten the “fun” quality and Psychonauts really fills the void)
You guys make amazing games and have brilliant talent ❤️

You know, I always assumed it was very clever, meticulous design that allowed repeat playthroughs and speedrunners to skip sections with good timing or knowledge of the systems. Any one of them coulda played it off as intentional and I woulda bought it.
