    I'm in the opposite camp as most. I lusted for a FJ since I first saw one in 1984. I bought a new 1989 FJ1200 and kept it 600 miles. I've never, ever hated a motorcycle with such intensity.

    I have an all original 1989 model which I bought new. It has been a fantastic motorcycle and I agree completely with your pros and cons. Tremendous power especially rolling on the throttle at 100 km/h in 5th gear. Fantastic for passing without downshifting. My shed is small and it is challenging to move the FJ around. I bought a motorcycle jack, which allows me to manoeuver it with ease. Happy riding!

    I had the 1993 ABS. Of all the bikes I’ve owned it is still, to this day, my favorite. I added Helibars, Corbin seat, progressive springs for the forks and a Scottoiler. It was perfect. Wish I still had it.

    R1 brake callipers are a common upgrade on these bikes, also corbin seats are the best imho. apart from some defects in the plastic parts, it seems you have found a very nice FJ. Hope you have lots of fun with it! :D

      Hello Tjorben, thanks for your comment. Yes its sad from the plastic parts, but it's something where you can't go around, its a motorcycle from 30 years old and used ;) Maybe I can still find good replacement parts. Something for later.

    Still sounds really smooth. Looks like they've upgraded the front brakes and discs. Another con was the second gear, it would often drop into neutral under acceleration, might not be the case with yours. Enjoy that bike, it is a legend and safe riding.

      The popping out of second gear thing was pretty much fixed from the 3CV model on. It was definitely a real issue with the '84 - '87 models.

      More like FJ1100 `84/85 models which were affected sometimes. The Trans was updates for the `86 models. I had a `86 FJ12 for many many years, and never had any issues.@@shinethelight01

    This bike had va bullet proof reputation but lacked the excitement of the Kawasaki GPZ900R which was it's main competitor. However, now you can pick one of these up for a lot less than the aforementioned "Ninja" and have shed loads of fun! I did 60,000 miles on my "Ninja" back in the day but now I can't afford one! So I'm thinking of buying an FJ............

      These bikes sure do have a bullet proof engine, I have a 1990 FJ1200 3cv and I've done 130,000 miles and it's still going strong, the Achilles Heel on these bikes is the suspension linkage bearings not due to bad design just that they're a pig to get to, re-grease e every 15,000 miles or they tend to seize and could snap the linkages arms causing a nasty accident

    • @teachingrtechnics8051
      @teachingrtechnics8051  Před 2 lety

      Hello Carlos, thanks for your reply. The yamaha fj1200 is a sport/tour motorcycle. The steering bar (clip ons) are a little sportive, and forces to take a little more sportive posture on the saddle. I have seen people modify the steering bar to make it even more comfortable. The original suspension is good (the rear shock), the front is original a little soft (not strange) afther all those years. You can upgrade this with a hyperpro/wilbers or any progressive spring that is on the market. The yamaha is just a super good motorcycle ;)

    • @nickwinn7812
      @nickwinn7812 Před 2 lety +2

      This is a heavy bike by modern standards, so unless you are very heavy, you will not be adding too much to the un-sprung weight. Add to this that it's a sports-tourer, so fairly softly sprung, and I think it's ideal for someone with back problems - as long as you are careful when you are off the bike and wheeling it around. (not really a problem for an experienced rider).

    • @calysagora3615
      @calysagora3615 Před 2 lety +2

      The last years models didn't have the anti-dive stuff, and instead had nice fully adjustable suspension front and back. I would go with the newer ones to avoid the anti-dive complexity anyways.

    • @teachingrtechnics8051
      @teachingrtechnics8051  Před 2 lety +1

      @@calysagora3615 Thanks for your reply. You mean the later models of the FJ did had the anti dive systems? Becaus the older models without ABS didn't had it. I am personally not a fan from the the anti dive system. I had it on a Kawasaki GPZ 400 and it didn't work out at all. A progressive front syspension and a good rear upgrade does a better job ;)
