    Cool new gadget, and very useful.
    I will advice to buy some silicon band with 3M adhesive
    and use under the lid for a better sealing and noise proof!

    Ultrasonic cleaners are great! mine was able to revive a dead ipod shuffle that went through the washing machine.

  • @TheOriginalCollectorA1303

    Nice, looks like a good addition to the setup! Looks like it’ll make even the worst boards appear brand new which will definitely help, even if it’s just for parts. I’m sure you’ll get a lot of use out of it and restore even more Macs, great video!

    haha, I like that they repurposed a tea ball for small parts. I've used Vevor brand at work, if that one is anything like their 2 and 4 litre models, it's awesome.

    Thanks for making this video. I have 30L ultrasonic cleaner i got last year. but i've been too nervous to use it. This video really shows how to use it for our specific use case. (cleaning logic boards from retro macs) and its the missing link for me.

    Interesting. I purchased this exact model last week. Plan on using it to clean a PowerMac G5 QUAD version 2 cooler (minus the pumps). Everything else in the system looks practically new or very lightly used... BUT it overheats shortly after booting to desktop. Think this is deep enough to submerge the whole thing. My thought is 40C and 30min each side then flush for a few hours with a distilled water and vinegar solution with external pump, Then another round in the ultrasonic cleaner and a couple hours of flushing with just distilled water. Probably overkill but I wanna make sure.

    Thanks for the review! I *almost* picked this exact one up recently... but decided to try the dishwasher method for now and work my way up to this. I hope you'll consider doing an update on it after using it for 6-12 months to see how it holds up. Congrats! :)

    • @Mac84
      @Mac84  Před rokem +2

      Just be careful with tap water, I've seen some nasty outcomes when minerals and other things were left to sit on electronics. If you must use the dishwasher, be sure to use alcohol (IPA) or distilled water to clean the board afterwards. Good luck!

    • @iiidiy
      @iiidiy Před rokem +1

      @@Mac84 Yessir! I did a scrub with IPA right after to hopefully avoid the minerals... and even *still* got some build-up on the bottom side that needed manual cleanup. The ultrasonic would be much easier & better - just large and expensive for a hobbyist like me. One day! :)

    Excellent video and review of this unit. I have two questions. First, other than distilled water, what did you put in, I mean the cleaning agent? Wil you do a video on a very large board? Like a Commodore PET and if you do, can you place it in without the basket? I guess that's 3 questions 😁. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    • @Mac84
      @Mac84  Před rokem +2

      Thanks!
      I use Branson EC (@10:53), it’s a chemical I’ve used before which was recommended to me by others. It works well in my testing.
      I have a large Macintosh II board I’ll be cleaning, but it was in-repair during this video’s filming, so it wasn’t ready just yet. I’ll be sharing more about this I’m sure!
      I don’t have a Commodore PET, but even if the board doesn’t fit, it can be placed in the tank without the basket and sticking out of the tank. I had to do that before with my smaller cleaner.

    Those boards were really bad! I've been tempted to splash out (pun intended) and buy an ultrasonic cleaner, but I don't actually have room for one in my tiny apartment right now. I need to find a strapping young man to take away my old fridge, that would certainly clear enough room for a table large enough for such a beast.
    Actually, I just googled for the price of ultrasonic cleaners here in Australia, and they've really come down in price since I last checked. I guess I've found what my next overtime pay is going to be spent on. Now I just need to figure out where to find a well-muscled young man to take that old fridge away. It's a big fridge, so he'll need those rippling muscles ... or perhaps just a trolley.

    Have you ever Ultrasonically cleaned an Analog board from a compact Mac? If so, did it damage the varnish on the windings of the Flyback?

    • @Mac84
      @Mac84  Před rokem +2

      I’ve ultrasoniced a power supply (which was fine) but not an analog board with a flyback on it. So I’m sorry but I can’t personally answer that. Although I’m sure some web searching may dig up some details.

    @15:40 I think that the difference in temperature is due to the lack of mixing. The water near the bottom of the tank is going to be cooler than the water near the surface. The internal thermometer is probably near the bottom of the tank. I suspect that this is the culprit for the difference in measured temperature.

    • @Mac84
      @Mac84  Před rokem +1

      I did place the external thermometer at the bottom of the tank, but I did notice the built-in thermometer lagged behind, it took more than 15-20 min for it to "settle" at a more realistic temperature. My smaller cleaner didn't do that, so it may just be due to the large amount of water in the tank. Either way, I think the $5 thermometer is handy to have, but again, who knows how accurate it is. ;-)

    • @VicTheVicar
      @VicTheVicar Před rokem

      @@Mac84 Fair enough! Strange that it differs and lags that much then. I think that it's safe to assume that a cheapo thermometer differs in the vicinity of 1-2 degrees Celsius from the actual temperature. It was overall a great review. Well done!
