I really appreciate how he stressed about safety and how a piece of wood is no where near worth loosing a finger. And that table saw jig and miter saw extension are really cool builds
This is the best Crown Molding video I've ever watched!
I will definitely save this video. It troubleshooting my biggest problem I have incurred in my life of installing crown.
Many, many thanks for this very informative video. As an amateur carpenter and cabinetmaker, I have installed crown mounding in two homes over the years. Thought I was pretty good for an amateur--but I had no idea how much I really didn't know. In the unlikely event that I should ever have to do it again (I'm in my mid 80's now) I will have to come back and review this video again. As has been said by others below, this is pretty heavy stuff--and I am not referring to the weight of the mouldings.
I learned soooo much from this video. Thank you! I learned I need to hire a contractor
This is amazing info im 28 been doing carpentry for about 7yrs and all this is great info
YOU sir, are the reason I put it all on youtube! Thank you for the confirmation that it was worth the effortt!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge
The video was incredible. You remind me of Norm from this old house or the new Yankees workshop. That’s all I had to go by except books back in the 80’s. I get most of everything you’re doing but you had valuable tricks that clicked in my brain making a huge difference how I proceed from here. I’m never too old to learn. I wish everyone could say the same. I’m definitely not too proud to say I’ve been doing it for 40 years the wrong way. Not entirely wrong because I’ve had good results however I could have been better.
Thanks Gary! I own your book and CD's. I even won a Construction Master calculator at your Roadshow
Scotty, THAT'S so great that you have a CM calculator for a Roadshow! Thanks for your note!
Very smart. Thank you
Best Teacher
Gary has been a wonderful teacher for me over the last 20-25 years. I have learned so much from Gary.
I got confused after you measured a 120 degree angle at the ridge of the cathedral ceiling, determined it was a 60 degree inside miter, and set your saw a30 angle position. I was arguing with my phone screen in public while you were cutting that piece because I thought it needed to be a 60 degree miter but somehow your piece was perfect and I’m still confused lol thank you for sharing all this knowledge!
Thanks for posting. When you we modifying your crown (creating different spring angle), you camera caught the molding moving inside your fixture as it was being cut not to mention some pauses. I have some expensive oak crown I had custom milled, it came out poorly so I need to do a similar cut and will borrow your jig design to make that cut SAFELY.
I am worried the wood will burn and cut won't be flat. I run 60 tooth forrest woodworker II blade in my table saw. I am thinking to add feather boards to better hold crown tight to jig thru the cut and paste wax over mdf to try and make it easier to slide pieces thru. Do you have any thoughts on enhancements to your jig? Are you getting the accuracy/quality out of it you need?
Other thing, its very hard to follow how you are setting your mitre saw following your discussion about different numbers reading on different machines, gages, etc. I agree super confusing when you first pick up a protractor, measure a corner of a wall then try to cut it on a saw. Perhaps it is a conspiracy by makers of trim and saw manufacturers to cause us to buy more ... I know I make plenty of cuts/pieces of scrap as I go thru learning curve making a piece of trim fit a room before nailing it on. Never fails, on my last piece of trim I cut then angle opposite direction needed and need another trip to store for more molding.
Last question, I noticed you have been doing this kind of work a long time and are not wearing a respirator during your cutting. I notice lots of dust collection apparatus in your shop, have you found any issues working in that environment? My point being lots of dust not being grabbed by dust collection system, has that been an issue?
I do alot of mdf, even running best system I can come up with there is alot of fine dust floating in air after I make a cut or a pass with a router. Curious about your take on this. Thanks again.
Great stuff Gary Katz will you be posting all 10 programs?
YES, I am. I'm still working on editing the last ones. Takes a lot of time and I dont' have a lot. I'm semi-retired and that means I'm really really busy!!!
Great education on this. Any videos on how you constructed the wings for the miter saw stand?
Hah hah. I know I said I'd do that but....just haven't had time to shoot something new. However, if you look at the description on Program 1, you'll find links to the PDF files and there's a PDF article on how to make those wings!!! The only problem is...you have to READ!!! :)
Thats fooey!
Ha hah!
At 10:00 minutes you said “75 is really 15 on my miter gauge” but did not explain how that is. I’m now confused.
I feel so stupid from all the years I made excuses for not being able to produce perfect cuts on irregular circumstances where I should have been able to correct the problem. God forgive me. I get it now ! Don’t ever think you know it all because you don’t. We can all learn something beneficial everyday if we just pay attention and look for the lesson that might come our way
You’re absolutely the best bro 😎
Lol how is two 45s miters = 90 degree corner confusing?
Do the math 45+45=90 So easy
