Wolfgang Van Halen has been no stranger to trolls on twitter who have accused him of riding his Dad’s coattails. In announcing his groups Mammaoth WVH’s second album simply tilted Mammoth 2 he recently shared the album single Another Celebration at the end of the world which is due out on August 4th through BMG.
Wolfgang has been pretty calm when dealing with internet trolls. Some trolls criticized him for not covering Van Halen songs during Mammoth’s live shows while others have slammed him for simply using the name van halen in his band.
One exchange happened on March 21 when he tweeted out Either you be a Van Halen Jr. and people get pissed at you for riding coattails, or you DON’T and you’re disrespecting the legacy. It’s bonkers
One user on twitter responded saying
If a person wants to make a name for themselves they wouldn’t take advantage of their famous father’s last name & band name. His father & uncle didn’t have that. Everyone in the band didn’t have that. Matter of fact, majority of current & former bands & singers didn’t have that." This led Wolfgang to deliver the immortal comeback, "Van Halen is literally my fucking name you grape."
There was more to come.
"You guys understand Van Halen is literally a name," Wolfgang tweeted. "Like way before it was a band. Right? That good ol American rock and roll you love so much was written by a Dutch immigrant
Last night, the exasperated musician posted a Twitter poll asking his followers what name he should use, to make everyone happy. The options? Wolfgang Van Halen, Wolfgang AC/DC, Wolfgang The Who, or Wolfgang Paul McCartney.
He also had some high profile trolls to deal with including Eddie I know everybody trunk - Hudba

I really like your channel a lot. The content is great and the narration has a nice tone. The stories are always simple, interesting and delivered well. One issue with this entry, however. Eddie Trunk is by no means 'trolling' Wolfgang VH. If you listen to Trunk and know everything regarding this subject in context, he's far from a troll. Eddie has been an enormous backer/supporter/promoter of Wolfy and his his new direction. His opinions on this were coming from the right place - simply wanting to see Wolfgang's legendary father properly honored. It was never a direct slam on Wolfgang. Trunk knows there are many forces at play that has kept this tribute from happening and has in no way singled out WVH. Thanks for letting me share my opinion. Rock on, all....

If someone knew absolutely nothing about Wolfgang other than his last name, I could at least understand why they might jump to the conclusion they he’s got to where he is through arrogant nepotism. But watch Wolfgang in interviews, listen to his lyrics, and appreciate the effort one must undertake to write and perform every part of an album by himself. Wolfie is one of the most genuine and earnest musicians out there. And after he nailed the solos at last year’s tribute concert, there’s no denying his skill on guitar, just like his father.

Huge respect and admiration for Wolfgang. Incredible talent and incredibly wise and grounded for his young years. I wouldn’t have been able to handle this kind of situation/bullshit when I was his age (barely have my shit together at 51). That is a dude that is living in personal integrity right there. He's not the first prodigy to share a famous name, and hopefully he won't be the last. The Nelson twins didn't play covers of their dad's old recordings. The created new music that they enjoyed playing (even if many others didn't enjoy it). It's ridiculous for people to think that Wolfgang will be anything other than what he wants to be. Kudos to him for handling life as well as he has, with all the difficulties he's had to suffer. I hope he has a long and healthy career.
The dumbest thing about that tweet is the fact that Van Halen actually DID have their name to lean on. David Lee Roth suggested the name because he said it was more than just a name. He felt that the name had power, longevity shadow and mystery, like the name Santana.
DLR was absolutely right. There's just something about that name and it was so good that he was willing to set his own rather large ego aside and not only accept the name, but actually suggest the name and fully support it for the sake of marketing and creating a lasting brand identity.
Make no mistake, the band Van Halen definitely had their name to help them and Wolfgang would be stupid not use it.

Let's not forget the fact that Wolfie wrote every single song on his debut album - both words AND music - produced it himself, AND did all music and vocals on it. And he's great. And literally NONE of it sounds ANYTHING like Van Halen.

Do Wolfie IS quite literally a Van Halen and has played in Van Halen. His father provided him with everything he needed to hone his talent as a musician and fostered his talent. Wolfie has every right to use or not use whatever he wants in respect to his name his band's name, Van Halen's music. Frig, I bet Alex would give him permission to even name his band Van Halen. His last name is Van Halen his father was music icon for many generations of people and will always be since he is part of history. That being said Musicians are humans there not gods and super heroes they don’t live in imaginary worlds. They eat, drink, shit and piss like everyone else there humans that put on show for thousands of people which they enjoy during at end of the day they have families and friends and walk the same world as everyone else. Eddie and Wolfgang don’t owe anyone anything but a shared interest in having fun and enjoying life the best they can. Music isn’t always the most important thing in musicians life but is the expression of that enjoyment which they share with the world.
