    My mother made all my clothes when I was a kid. She also worked as the piano player in cocktail lounges in the mid-1960's. She made all her cocktail dresses using brocades, fringe, satin, chiffon all fitted to a T. She was an amazing seamstress!

    Hllo Lindsay, This is a wonderful painting and a wonderful submission for World Watercolor Month! I had a huge flashback when saw this over on Insta! I was drawn to the pattern package. I started my watercolor journey Loooong before the internet and getting photo's developed was in no way instant! I know Poloroid's did exist but I did not have one and the film was quite expensive(it was way out of reach for a kid!). Well I used my Mothers cache of patterns for reference when I was trying to draw or paint figures! Yes, later I did go to the Library but most anatomy books were not for kids! I did not get access to a good anatomy library book until I was an older teen! Thanks for showing everyone that references can be used from anywhere! I know a real person is the "best" reference, but I painted so many versions of pattern people when I got started painting figures! Thanks for a truly memorable memory recall Lindsay!

    Oh the nostalgia! Looks like the age of patterns from my mother's sewing room. When she took me to TG&Y in the 80's I always loved to look at buttons and pattern books while she shopped for fabric and such. The Halloween costume patterns were my fave. Fun drawing!

    I saw some of my old cards with snaps today in my sewing machine drawer. I think that

    That wood grain was absolutely BRILLIANT!!! Wow. I had no idea what you were doing with the ruler and the BS pencil until I watched you, mesmerized, by adding the oak grain. I actually wondered why you were measuring on TOP of buttons, as they'd cause a "hump" under the ruler. That's how good this painting was. You constantly surprise us. This was a 12 out of 10, Lindsay. I learned SO much. Thank you! Fanna😊

    Beautiful composition, so much fun. Top tip about the watercolour ground 12:40 to correct mistakes! 9:09 on brown pens, here is a frugal tip. Since you have so many fountain pens, get Rohrer & Klingner's waterproof Sketch Ink (around 10€ in Europe) The brown colours are Thea or Lilly (they all have women's names) You can refill them using an empty cartridge with a stump syringe or a converter. No plastic waste and you have years long supply of ink. 9:20 Yep, Pitt markers set of 4 still available. Jackson's carries them. 4 markers in different sizes for 12.40€.

    I love your painting! It reminds me of a corkboard I covered with vintage sewing patterns that I picked up at yard, garage or estate sales and made a collage with any other sewing items I could pin to it in my sewing room. • @joykruczay
    @joykruczay Před 6 dny

    Wow, I didn't think you would be old enough to remember patterns! In the seventies (when I was in middle school) the girls (of course) took home ec and that included sewing. Butterick, Simplicity and McCall's patterns spring to mind. It is so much more cost effective (and simple) to buy off the rack. How many really bother "mending" anything now, or even have a sewing machine?
    Your result looks great, and I feel like I can pick up that button. What is very helpful to me with your tutorials is pearls of wisdom about the materials used, like the pencils. Although I am attempting to "shop in my closet' as much as possible for art supplies. As a child, I crafted with whatever was at hand, not having income to purchase new. More isn't going to help my creativity (which you have in abundance) or produce better art. I get stuck in "analysis paralysis" in even choosing a subject, despite the world of references at my fingertips. There is a saying to the effect of "abundance decreases appreciation."
    North Light Book Club was my basic intro into art decades ago. It was so thrilling to get the snail mail brochure with the new releases. A lot of those books are OOP and worth quite a bit. I have sold and bought many books on ebay. One can search for a title, save the search, and ebay will email you when someone lists it. Recently I sold a lot of art books and have to sell many more that I do not use. Oddly enough, the "Artist's Photo Reference" will be staying on my shelves also. I have "Birds" and "Wildlife" but sold flowers as I do not paint them often (or very well) and am not on social media.
    Lindsay, you continue to inspire and intimidate (ya know, in a good way) with your fabulous art. Even though we only "know" YT creators from their videos, so many artists seem like such genuine, intelligent, and admirable human beings.

    What kind of magic are you working to get quilting cotton from Marden’s that’s $3-4/yard? I always see it for $8/yard there! I do love the wall of fabric on the giant cardboard tubes, though - I’ve found some great deals there! I use old sheets to make mockups of new patterns so I know if I need to change anything before using the good fabric - it’s an annoying step, but totally worth it!

      @@thefrugalcrafter I do gonto the Brewer one. Hmm, maybe I’m looking in the wrong place, or maybe they only have certain prints for that price, but I’ve never had good luck with their quilting cottons. I’ll have to look more carefully next time. Their fashion fabrics are great, though! I’m planning to make a coat for the winter and have found great deals on wool coating fabric, so the project will actually be affordable!

  • @providencevalleyfarm5270

    Hello,
    Yes, I have the BIANYO brown set, I have been doing a drawing with them this week & I am torn about the quality. They don't smear, but the color is really kind of pale to me. I think of Sepia as a deeper brown. These are a bit lighter than the color on the barrel & the different thicknesses of the nibs are even lighter. They seem to be a lot more Terra Cotta in color. I guess they are the color of a Conte' Crayon I used for life drawing eons ago. I will see if I can get an image to upload with some comparable art materials.
    Love seeing the seamstress side of you coming out 😄 I can't decide if I'm an artist first or a seamstress/designer, but I love them both eaqually. I also have gallon jars & antique canning jars with the most amazing buttons. When we get them unpacked from the storage room I need to share some with you!

    I don't have awesome experiences with derwent pens. I do have a copic multiliner sepia set and I was suprised to see the learningcurve where the microns dont have that. So next time I will get me the microns again. Its nice to have me a good quality sepia though.
