Guitar: Jose Ramirez Antigua (www.guitarsalon.com/product-2...)
Here's French guitarist Judicael Perroy playing Agustín Barrios' Choro de Saudade on the new Jose Ramirez Antigua model spruce-top classical guitar. Recorded at the Guitar Salon International showroom in Santa Monica, CA.
Huge thanks to the folks at Apogee Electronics (ApogeeDigital.com) for the use of their Ensemble interface in these recordings.

I started to play this piece today, and I soon realized that I could not do a passage because my hand could not stretch enough.... so I started to search a video of somebody with "normal hands" and I found Judicael's video. The trick of using the left had thumb is amazing, it will give me a chance to play this great piece. Thanks a lot.
I have listened to this beautiful performance from the time it was published, and I think this is an awesome interpretation of this piece.
I was fortunate with much luck on a Friday evening last fall when by chance I drove my car to Kent State Stark (Ohio) as part of guitar weekend festival last year just to transport myself and my wife twenty miles to hear this artist last November 2017 not knowing anything about his musical capabilities. We did not know what we were in for. We soon found out. Were we transformed by pure unadulterated artistry? Yes indeed my wife and I were. He gave a free solo recital People who knew him as a guitarist described him as the best guitarist today to introduce him. I ended up saying the same thing in coming to the same judgment and was in total agreement without hesitation. The words used by audience members to describe their impression of his musical accomplishment that evening were enough to describe their reaction to seeing and hearing his performance. No need to search for any more specialized vocabulary. He at first performed a lute suite by Bach impeccably without missing a note from memory - that accomplishment itself if worth many words of praise - and then in less than a second he plunged head-first into Hungarian dances by a twentieth century composer with a rapid tempo without missing a note and played it with marvelous tonality and musical skills so impeccably that I knew instantly I was witnessing a superb artist do what he has become known for playing music. Audience members were stunned as they stumbled around hurriedly to regain their seats and collapsed into moments of astonishment at this sudden transition between the two compositions. As I said to a fellow audience member "it does not get any better than this". He agreed. I still recall using the same words today as I recall that performance. Yes indeed! I had heard many of the famous talents play guitar music in preceding years and each of them can stand on their own musical feet in comparison with Perroy and gain applause and rightfully so convince audience members of how deserving they are of the same words of praise as I used that evening at Kent State Stark. Since then I have listened to many of his solo performances and have come away with the same words of high praise for his musical accomplishment and potential. This man is a superb artist well worth my time to hear and see again. I do not place one artist in the category of being the best because all of those artists whom I have seen and heard share that honor. To have so many talents of this nature to hear it is a pleasure and not easy to make a simple comparison between all of them for it is more complicated than to say six of one and half a dozen of another or anything like apples and oranges and simply move on to anther topic. I choose my favorite among favorites and worship and pay respect to all of them rightfully so. For that moment of sudden discovery Judicaël Perroy was as superb an artist as I had seen play the guitar as he does so well. I have not stopped talking with others about that evening's musical discovery. It is often the program of music that they play that can be determining factor in making such a judgement. Since all of them play different music I love the chance to evaluate them all for their contribution to my musical education. For me I was able to speak with him in French about his music. He was approachable and welcomed the chance to hear me speak his language. A factor is making a judgement is my knowledge of the music they are playing. I often want to hear something new. Nevertheless this artist deserves much praise and much honor of the first category.
Spectacular interpretation of this masterpiece. The nostalgia mixed with the improvisatory element in the Brazilian choro comes through clearly. The technique is impeccable, too.
That was just plain beautiful congratulations I always love your plane
Astonishing composition, astonishing musician, astonishing guitar...and astonishing Guitar Salon International, bravo!
Amazing in so many ways! Those left hand fingers don't look like they were made for playing the guitar, yet they perform a mesmerizing ballet while the right hand fingers defy common sense in the tone they produce. Bravo, so beautifully done.
Since first hearing this man play classical guitar music in public there are not enough words available for use in praising his accomplishments and I have been convinced of his supreme ability and contribution to my musical education about guitar music.
If you have the chance to see him in concert, don't miss it. He is incredible.
The tone he produces is amazing!!! I am enthralled with the sound he makes! I am blown away!!!
i can't believe how amazing his tone is with the length of those nails? if my nails were that long, I'd be snapping notes all over the place!
supreme musician/guitarist!
enrique guerrero try filing underneath your nails! Also the shape matters a lot. You might want to smooth out any part that is tangling :)
Thank you for the advice my friend! I really appreciated it!
I went to one of his concerts and me and my friends asked him why he keeps his nails so long and all he replied with was so that I can play and that was all I needed to hear
Check him out in his younger. There he had short hair, he was more skinny and he looked pretty good
Xuanyi Nick Liu what is used to fill underneath the nails?
Bravo, j'aime beaucoup la musicalité et la sensiblité de Judicael Perroy. Merci de ce partage.
Mr. Judicaël Perroy:
I always come here back to hear this wonderful performance. This is the only Choro de Saudade performance that truly inspire all the meaning of the piece. Other versions I've heard slow down the tempo considerably killing that South American essence, but yours doesn't. You truly respect the rhythm and all the details adapting your technique, making the music always the priority on your playing.
Thank you! ❤

One of my favouritte piece, great playing.Toraja, Indonesia
It's amazing how you can get away with things when you are this good of a player. Classical guitar students are told early on to avoid things in the right hand that he does in this video. And those long nails just seem very uncomfortable to play with. But Who is to judge when you can make the instrument play this beautifully? Sure, this seems to be a great instrument, but the credit goes to the player here. Beautiful performance, Maestro Perroy!
Students are told lots of ****. The music is the only one that counts.
Not every hand is the same, his technique is amazing
fantastic player, great interpretation!
I have listened this music work by many guitarists, but definitely you are the best performer of this music work. Bravo......excellent feelings....you made the guitar speak....i loved it.....millions of bravooooos, I wish you my best.
Hasta hoy para mí la mejor versión
Super clean. Great tone and range of sound.
Evokes beautiful imagery. Stunning
Great performance... I really love his phrasing. Made me learn this piece
Absolutely beautiful.

Thank you! This is purest saudage music... brings soft tears
fantastic...!! He goes on his way. Best!!!
simply beautiful inspired me to learn it!
What a lovely and nuanced interpretation of this difficult piece... I have heard it many times (I have it on a CD by John Williams) - and this one may well be my favorite performance of it. Very soulful and moving. Kudos!
Outstanding!
Outstanding performance and sound.
One of my favorite piece from the master Agustín barrios Mangore.
Excellent performance!
Agustín Pio Barrios
1:30 the famous stretch
Woah!
Get that competive bone out of you and shove it where the sun don't shine. :)
Using my index finger, I barre both the 1st fret of the 6th string and the 2nd fret of the 2nd string.
Tavis Allen ah thank you I'll try. I can't pass this chords at all..
Ahh that’s how! I almost dislocated my index finger!!
EXCELLENT MUSIC WITH EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE...A GIANT BRAVOOOOOOO...!
Wonderful music making !
This ringfinger a ... always ready for a stroke... so independent ! Best interpretation 👏👏👏
Doesn't use it that much, though.
a true beautifullness of a clasical guitar composition...a duende... music comes into the heart...
By Agustín Barrios, from Paraguay
Very enjoyable performance of a great piece.
This guitar player is just wonderful. I love his playing. Can't explain why, though
Beautiful ! Sehr schön! Thanks for sharing.

Magnifique
A great performance
Wow!
Wonderful
Sublime! !!!
Excelente amigo que tremendo esfuerzo para lograr ejecutarlo
Que grande Mangore
That last note you ended on. Chilling
Bravo
Great playing. Great hair. And nicely produced (as usual!)
Qué bien toca!
Nailed it!
emphasis on "NAIL"...LOL
Nothing like seeing players with obnoxiously long nails.
Sigh... "To each their own" is a motto really difficult to embrace.
@@soullessSiIence well if he can play beautifully like in this video, it doesn't really matter lol
:-)
disgusting nails on both hands, damnnn
Beautiful playing, crazy flexibility (and a Thumbed Bass note?) and WHAT a sound from that Ramirez. Anyone who says Ramirez don't sound good should listen to THIS (and other GSI recordings)!!
EXCELLENT GUITARIST WITH EXCELLENT FEELINGS AND TECHNIC.....BRABOOOO...I WISH YOU HEALTH AND MUCH MORE SUCCESS...!
Bravo.
MARVELOUS
Bela interpretação! Very good
Bravo
This Ramirez sounds amazing. Very impressive! The player is obviously pretty amazing too. But, I love the tone of this guitar.
It is certainly a Ramirez sound...
PERFECTO !!! :) Thanks ! :)
Rythmiquement très libre, inventif,et ensemble tout-à-fait cohérent et très beau !
Nice. Great piece. Bravo! I like where you grab the low F with your thumb.
One crazy stretch with the thumb. Thumbs up for doing it in time.
A SUPER FEELINGS OF A SUPER GUITARIST...!
i'm surprised he hasn't made a second soundhole with that thumbnail.
De si petites mains mais des ongles si longs au service d’un son cristallin et d’une grande et profonde musicalité. Quel plaisir de découvrir, je ne connaissais pas , cet immense guitariste
I liked his performance and so is his hair style !
This is the best take of this piece, at least for me
Perfect piece you keep the Line same Julian Bram. Bernard Québec Canada
That tone is through the stratosphere. Insane technique and feel
bravo
Superbe!
Judicael Perroy and Zoran dukic on choro de saudade. I've heard enough.
Sounds fantastic! Great new model idea. What will the street price on these be?
Я плачу от этой музыки. Так же как от его собора.
Esta es una de las mejores ejecusiones que he visto de este coro. Las posición de los dedos de la mano izquierda en los minutos 01:30 y 03:54, fenomenal.
superbe...
Nice
His right hand is making me tense
but it works perfectly
Don't look at it.
A mí gusto la mejor versión de ésta obra!!!
I love this song and guitar. This guitarist is great. Makes me want to grow my right hand nails longer. Someday I'm gonna montage my house off to buy one of these guitars.
Or perhaps let your hair grow.
looking at the guitarist nails, any experienced classical guitarist would wonder like me, how can such long nails and shapes able to play so well, it is like against the nature (in CG plucking technique). This is really amazing. Really well played and tones.
Terrific! Are they his own nails on the right hand or acrylic glue-ons?
Looks natural to me
He's put a few pounds on since I saw him LIVE a decade ago. Still playing brilliantly. He was teacher for Thomas Viloteau who is also brilliant.
His hair is bigger than my future
x) haha. Stay positive ;p
Mohammed Adwan and his nails are longer than mine
That was one thing I noticed ...my nails aren't that long even for flamenco playing. i don't know how anyone can play with such long nails, but he is good!
haha. for sure.
lol
Master guitarist
La lumière du sud
Cool, F with a thumb! I love it.
@@johncampbell3940 Ok. I haven't realized that he tuned it down. I will look at the score, I think I have it somewhere. Normally, it's an F. Tx.
@@alabudzki74 cheers; but you're right - it's a cool technique . Both E and A strings tuned down: czcams.com/video/hOw9Bj6-3sE/video.html
@@johncampbell3940 Thank you for the link.
do you really have to tune down now both strings - 6th to D and 5th to G in this composition??
Man that was nice. The nails! How does one get to that point? Sure got a great tone though. Anyone hear his tremolo? Gotta see that miracle.
The interpretation is amazing, BUT I checked again and again the scores by Mangoré and Judicael plays some chords that are completely different to what is written, just before the stretch there is a D sharp on my version that he does not play, in fact he makes always the same chord with fingers 2,3,4 of the left hand before and after the stretch...... I don't know if it is a mistake by Judicael (I doubt), or if it's a different version of the same piece. I checked a couple of other interpretations on youtube and they play as it's written on my scores. I must say that Judicael's version sounds better though.
10
oh my! 01:27 what a genius!!
Very cleanly played. The stretch at 1:30 can be eased by leaving out the second finger :)
You don't gonna learn something to Judicaël IS one of the best guitar player of the World or the best
the third part.. will i ever manage to learn the same rhythm..? its so fast. :'(
...nearly there
A true master of his art
Now THAT is a thumbnail
I did not know that Gene Simmons plays Classical too! Awesome.
