  • Celebrity-loved dentist Michael Apa is known for his boutique veneers, which can cost clients up to $80,000 for a whole smile. Apa’s technique for making porcelain veneers ensures that no two smiles are the same. Everything about the fake teeth is customized depending on the client, and the veneers are handmade by a team of master ceramicists in Apa’s New York City office. Apa’s worked on the smiles of celebrities including actress Chloë Sevigny, Victoria’s Secret model Elsa Hosk, Vinny Guadagnino of "Jersey Shore," and Kyle Richards of "Real Housewives." We got a look inside his New York office to see everything that goes into crafting a celeb-worthy smile of porcelain veneers.

    I work at a dental lab. This guy is pretty good but $80k is crazy. You can get the same thing done for about 1/50th of that price. His material costs are less than a few hundred dollars per case at most. He is charging for his skill and labor. Most dentists don’t make their own crowns or veneers, they have a lab do it for them. For the lady in the video she just had slightly crooked teeth. A local lab and dentist could have done that case and get close to the same effect for a few thousand dollars final cost to the patient.
    Edit: He has his own technicians. Those are the guys really doing all the work of actually crafting the veneers while the dentist makes most of the money.

      Would you recommend this process done with a person “me”, having a grey front tooth due to trauma early on in life? I have had a emergency root canal done, the gum and front tooth is uneven compared to the rest of my teeth.
      Any tips or advice?

    • @CouchMan88
      @CouchMan88 Před 4 lety +28

      Wavy K Your situation would be a crown instead of a veneer. There is a special opaquing process that can block out the dark color of the stump (the root canal). They basically paint the metal part white before cementing the crown on. This is one way to go, you would likely need a new crown made. Second option use a PFM (porcelain fused to metal) crown. This is a metal coping with porcelain on top of it. The shade of the stump will not show through since the inner part of the crown is already metal. Third option is to have a new root canal done. The lab can fabricate a new post in that is made from zirconia or composite instead of metal. A lot of high end labs will also offer a service for a custom shade. You will have an extra visit where after the doctor preps you tooth you go directly to the lab that is making your crown and have the technician take your shade. It will cost more but if you are not happy with the shade it is the way to go. Of course I am not a doctor so I would discuss these methods with your dentist and see what option and price works for you. The first option is most likely the cheapest with the third being the best but most expensive. Either way you have it done you can always request a custom shade from the lab for the best result. You can also have the tooth extracted and an implant placed but this is more time consuming and expensive than anything else. Hope this helps. 😁
      Edit: If the gum line is too low you may need an implant with a bone graft. This will bring the height of the tissue even with the rest of the teeth, as long as it is surgically possible. You can also have a crown designed with pink porcelain at the tissue level to mimic the appearance of your gums and even out the level of the teeth.

    • @wavyk8062
      @wavyk8062 Před 4 lety +7

      Justin Couch
      Wow I definitely appreciate the time and insight into you’re reply👍
      Ps: the trauma pushed the gums and tooth up. You are saying the specialist can replicate my gums so it can be more centered and aligned?

    • @CouchMan88
      @CouchMan88 Před 4 lety +4

      Wavy K If you do just a regular crown they can add pink porcelain on the bottom of the crown that looks like tissue. It’s not the best but will look okay. It may be possible to have a tissue graft by an oral surgeon. An implant with a bone graft would be best in my opinion. They would extract your tooth, cut the gums and add a mesh that will grow into new bone. It may be multiple grafts depending how it heals and how deep it is. Then you can add or graft more tissue on top of that as well. Next a surgeon would drill an implant into that new bone. A custom titanium or zirconia prosthesis would screw on top of the platform and a crown would be cemented to that. It would require months of healing until ready for the final crown but it would be the best method esthetically. You would need to talk to an oral surgeon about having an implant and graft. They will need to take an X-ray (CT scan) of your jaw first to see if this is even possible. It wouldn’t be cheap because you need a surgeon to place the implant and a dentist to do the crown usually. Consult an oral surgeon in your area. Look online because some are definitely better than others, it would not be a thing to try to look for the best price on but who has better results. You definitely have options it may come down to the cost being an issue as you have a bit more complicated situation than just veneers. For an implant all said and done you may spend a few thousand dollars even just for one tooth.

    For anyone interested, the type of veneer is a major factor in the final price (including the Dentist's Fee).
    For ex. Zirconia (strongest, expensive asf) vs Porcelain (strong, fairly priced imo) vs Composite veneer (most common, affordable, prone to staining).
    I get why some people say to just take care of your teeth, floss, brush, etc. But this is more than just a trend - it supports your mouth's musculature and even accent your cheekbones. And I haven't even touched on the fact that a warm smile is a universal language of kindness - especially when your job requires you to meet a lot of people (first impressions matter!).
    So for anyone interested in getting veneers, don't go for the cheaper options. INVEST. And it doesn't necessarily have to be Apa- levels but don't be afraid to save up for them, just like I did. Take care and stay safe.💛

    He is robbing patients, all veneers are minimally invasive which is what differs them from crowns. Here in the uk there is no such term as ‘aesthetic dentist’ which seems to be the specialist title he is giving himself’ which will land you in hot water here because you’re misleading patients into thinking you’re a specialist. We have restorative dentists and prosthodontists which are recognised specialists and they told me than the perfect smile is definitely not to do with ‘embracing the imperfection’ which was outlined in the video but rather it’s all about symmetry, the slight angle of teeth towards the midline, the gum margins being slightly shifted to the corner of the mouth, the golden proportion, curvature of teeth follows the lower lip and of course the shade. But hey it’s making him money so if I were him I’d milk it too

    • @allen5805
      @allen5805 Před 4 lety +2

      Restorative dentist is not a recognized specialist.
      Not all veneers are minimally invasive - it depends on how it is prepared. Unfortunately some dentists do remove more tooth structure than is necessary for a veneer which is not considered minimally invasive. Nowadays, certain materials have better strength and properties that allow for minimal preparation.
      However like all services and products, quality varies. You will pay a different price for a Toyota Camry vs. a Lamborghini Aventador. Are you being robbed if you purchase the Lambo? Depends on who you ask I suppose :)

      Loosee Monnn My thoughts exactly. How different does oral hygiene become? Do you technically not have to brush the veneers because they’re not real?

    • @carolinelaronda4523
      @carolinelaronda4523 Před 4 lety

      I think they’re sealed off from decay if the veneer is placed properly- just my guess

    • @kbaldwin928
      @kbaldwin928 Před 4 lety +1

      You brush and floss like normal. If the veneers are properly sealed the chances of you getting a cavity are low, but there is always a chance.

    • @allen5805
      @allen5805 Před 4 lety +1

      It definitely can. Veneers can last decades. However, they can also fail in a few years. It depends on a variety of factors:
      How well the teeth were prepared - if it was done sloppily, it's harder to seal the margin between the tooth and the veneer, creating microscopic gaps, causing leakage, which can allow bacteria to enter, creating cavities
      How well the veneers were made - bad veneers = bad margins = leakage = cavities
      Isolation - during the delivery of the veneers, steps should be taken to ensure the chances for contamination (saliva, blood, moisture, etc.) are very low. Contamination = bad bonding of the veneer = leakage = cavities
      Oral hygiene - patient has to brush and floss properly!
      Patient health - sometimes patients are just more prone to cavities. Dry mouth (genetics or medications), types of bacteria present in the mouth, pH of saliva, etc can increase a person's probability of getting cavities.
