People always say they like Sonic just for speed, this is what they get Sonic is a platformer I don’t want him to just run without platforming or having fun
@@johnathonturner2279 It's mechanics are optimized for fast movement, but some people think you are supposed to constantly run forward and little else, which is why they get frustrated when that doesn't work and then claim Sonic games are "fundamentally flawed". You are actually supposed to not only be good at platforming, but exploit the momentum-based mechanics to gain as much speed as possible _while_ doing good platforming. Basically, speed is a reward you get for being good at the game, not something the game is supposed to hand over to you without putting any effort into it, which is how some people want to approach the games. That's what I mean when I say Sonic isn't all about speed.
@@inendlesspain4724 However, the main draw is still that Sonic is able to move a break neck speed. If the platforming cannot be overcome quickly, then the pace is dragged down and you are better off playing Mario or Crash. And before you bring up this whole "earning speed" shtick, bear in mind that most people aren't going to want to learn the mechanics to go fast if a first playthrough isn't satisfying. If people don't get that satisfaction of speed that was promised the first time, what would lead them to trying a second time? Frankly, since you're clearly shitting on the Boost games, I'd say it (specifically Generations) does a good job of conveying speed on the first playthrough that it does a good job of encouraging playing through the stages again and learning to use Sonic's moveset and learn the levels to get even better times.
@@johnathonturner2279 When I wrote that comment I was mostly thinking about the Genesis games since those are the games that layed the foundations for the rest of the series. Those games were supposed to be replayed multiple times to master the mechanics, that was something common with most games at the time and people understood that, and since it's been a thing with Sonic games since the beginning I consider it a fundamental trait of the series, and if other people have difficulty getting into the games because of that, sucks for them, but that doesn't make the games bad or flawed. If I was shitting on something, it was game critics and journos, who seem to want to just press right constantly and somehow expect the games to win themselves or something. And on that note, I know Doom fans were really angry at them when they were criticizing Eternal for being "unbalanced" when in reality the game was forcing the player to properly learn its mechanics to progress, but they refused to and then blamed the game for it. Just saying, if other communities don't accept people criticizing their favorite games for sucking at them because they don't want to properly learn their mechanics, why should we with Sonic games? I know some of the boost games have good level design that aren't based solely on boosting through everything, like Generations as you said and, even though I haven't played it myself yet, I've heard Unleashed also does that, I've even heard that it does it even better than Generations'. A good example of a game that exercises that "Sonic is supposed to be all about speed" philosophy I was talking about is, of course, Forces, which I think learnt the worst lessons from past boost games. For 2D Sonic there's Advance 2, which is often considered a sort of prototype of the boost formula. The boost games have their highs and lows, but I don't know why you just assumed I was shitting on the formula as a whole, even though I have to admit it's not my favorite type of Sonic game.
9:23 knuckles is actually the best character of the bunch, his glide is actually a reused elytra. If you get to a high point, you can just fly over the stage! Pretty neat huh?

Sonic Minecraft is charming, but very janky. Tedious too. The Switch port is very unreliable, i was gifted it and it was a very poor job. Sold it a week or two after. Takes forever to load and the settings with internet etc, is very poorly done. I have been ranting on about a port that has nothing to do with Sonic and Nick can clearly review it better than a guy in the comments, but it is a DLC to a janky port after all. Overall I think the DLC was a huge cash grab.
Here's my prediction for the new sonic game: Either its an amazing game that does everything right and is exactly what the series needed Or It's a 3 hour boost to win
Those loop physics remind me of when SRB2 was just beginning to implement slopes. To be clear, Sonic Team Jr. made slopes work in a modified DOOM engine. Edit: I just got to the end of the video.
Bro I heard my boi flame grilling minecraft at the start and I was bouta flame grill him, but honestly I think he got it exactly right. I mean I didn't buy the sonic dlc but I played the Hive event on my xbox (with no harddrive breaking issues) and while yes it was frustrating at times. I genuinely had a lot of fun clearing out that ring shop and don't even get me started on that live event! It was so good I loved it! So yes Sonic and Minecraft were two games never meant to mix, but the people at Mojang and Hive went above and beyond to give us maybe not something good but probably the best we were going to get from something like this, and I can appreciate that. I mean I had an awesome time pointing out all of the references to my friends who have never even touched a Sonic game
Yeah minecraft sonic ain't that good but it's not terrible, i feel like it more of microsoft trying to make more money by making "dlcs" on some property that why most people play java instead of bedrock because bedrock is more of plz give money and a down graded version of minecraft. Plus bedrock isn't the best way to play minecraft so having a sonic game on that version of minecraft was a bad idea
Glad they fixed it in a performance update. I was in the discord and they were working on it since the first week of constant reports and yes it was only the switch version performing like this.
You can actually charge your ability and jump at the same time, so you can activate it in the air, which makes knuckles' glide actually usable. Also you can aim your ability. Like, you can look up, activate it and you'll shoot up into the air, which you can pair with the glide and fly. So yeah.
The shooting event in the server looks more like seaside hill. Also, a late tip, i wouldnt use the sneak action too much, just when you need to gain speed quickly, and the badnik physics (jump on a badnik, you gain height) from the classic games applies in the dlc
At the beginning, you were a little harsh for someone who plays Minecraft so rarely. This doesn't discredit your points, but keep it in mind. That aside.. While I understand what both companies could want from making this, there's no good reason to. While the exposure and ease of access could help them in the long term, making a game like this has no good purpose. It's a worse version of a Sonic/Runner game with no elements of Minecraft present to justify the crossover. Frankly, one of the mechanics that stood out was the Lost World-esque speed system. The team was able to write in some fan service, but the core gameplay still suffers the mistakes of both franchises. The endless runner aspects do seem appealing, but there's still no reason for this and not some proper spinoff. Before watching, I didn't know about the server events. They still aren't well integrated, but the concept is much more appealing. I did not mean to be as negative as I was either, but still do not see a good (non-economic) reason for this to be made. The quote from Notch is understandable: I got this version of the game at 6.99, and under Microsoft the app became so focused on transactions the once independent-only, usually free mods are now in-house shovelware that costs more than the game itself (should).
I'm tempted to try and make a datapack that makes players speedy and creates infinite template levels for Java edition. I'm sure with structure blocks, custom world settings and some attribute changes I could make that infinite sonic experience, although not as finely detailed as this DLC.
Ive been playing minecraft switch recently, and riding a boat is too fast before invisi-chunks not appear, and I got killed in the nether before i got out of the loading screen.
the thing with knuckles is that you can look upwards and it launches you that direction then glide. its not like any of the others in that it does rocket you forward it rockets you where youre looking
I swear this guy can persuade me to do anything, like I swear I hated this game when he told me the bad and then got me loving the game when he told me the good
I got this as well and I couldn't be happier. Especially when I heard it was also 8 players... well, until I played the stages and couldn't get past what looked like that Crab meat enemy. The speed wasn't helping me much either and thought I had to get use to it I guess. I got it for my son and daughter and wife so we can have some fun. I got in using Sonic, my wife was Amy, my son was Tails and my daughter was Knuckles. I was like, "Let's blast through with Sonic speed!" Wife: Let's go! Son: OK! Daughter: Got it! I don't know how we timed that so perfectly but we did. Then we were all as slow as honey pouring out a damn bottle. I was like, Maybe their tired from their last adventure or something. I said let me spin dash. I flew right off of the cliff in Green Hill Zone and was thinking, what the hell did I just buy? Oh well, at least we are playing this together. So I'm a happy man.

This is Mario’s revenge for Sonic punching him into Minecraft.
Freaking fantastic video as always bro! It actually makes me wanna pick up Sonic Minecraft again despite me not enjoying it loll.
Also The Trey Nobles Cameo at 10:33
First off, Game Apologist videos are back.
Second, The Harry Potter video is finally coming. (I'm so excited about that one)
Third, SAGE 2021 trailer will launch shortly.
This is truly a good day.
Sorry but what is SAGE?
@@Hajilex Sonic Amateur Games Expo; basically a fan game competition. Worth checking out IMO
Overall I think the DLC was a huge cash grab.
real excited for that sonic jam vid
Just one sonic speed reading & we might get a sonic adventure review we've been waiting for
MY BOYS BACKKKKK
Excellent video!
I like your stuff and hope your channels grow more 👍
heh, game apologizing before we got to adventure after all. i'm glad you found some stuff to love, man.
7:27 This is probably what Eggman would actually do to deal with sonic.
The minecraft thing is pretty cool but man it hurts my eyes when sonic runs. Great video Nick!
so you were mentioning combining minecraft mechanics in a bit more and my mind instantly yelled SONIC ADVENTURES: KNUCKLES LEVELS!
24:19 I think EVERYBODY would of been upset about a Lost Hex map. Gross. :P
No
I would just prefer building and crafting as sonic and his friends while having all the abilities they have in this dlc. That would be pretty fun
Best sanic channel.
Awesome Video
The chao garden music is one of the greatest ways to hit me with nostalgia
Sonic is the ultimate Minecraft speedrunner
Did I just see classic Death Egg Robot merch?
I NEED IT!
The hive event was probably the best bit of the sonic event
Here's my prediction for the new sonic game:
Either its an amazing game that does everything right and is exactly what the series needed
Or
It's a 3 hour boost to win
Those loop physics remind me of when SRB2 was just beginning to implement slopes. To be clear, Sonic Team Jr. made slopes work in a modified DOOM engine.
Edit: I just got to the end of the video.
Wish I'd known about that Hive thing before it ended, that would have been cool to experience.
Gotta be honest, the minecraft mario world is cool as hell to just explore
And then notch was declared a trans phobe. I’m sorry what?
just grifters trying to be relevant using notch's name. Its those guys to whom everything is racist, sexist and homophobic, just ignore them.
I wish they did what the Mario one did, just normal minecraft with a different map. And buildings, plus the items are replaced with Sonic ones.
The Hive event was probably the most fun I’ve had in a long time
thinking about it, y'know who crafts? eggman probably make a minecraft robotnik simulator
Damn, if only you uploaded sooner so i wouldn't have Bought the switch version

“My initial playthrough of Sonic Minecraft felt like…”
Video cuts to vaping ad about inhaling toxic metals into your lungs.
great video!
kinda bummed I slept on this- it looks pretty Janky, but its sonic - I'm hella bummed the events over now :C
This was a weird DLC pack for Bedrock edition, but its impressive how good they made it look as it does
I hate how we can’t use Sonic’s control outside the game, Like I want to build my own stages with the control
Sonic is so fast he breaks the world around him.
finally, someone that actually explains what sonic in Minecraft is like. instead of just saying "sOnIc dLc Is eXpEnSiVe"
Sir this is a Minecraft minigame, what where you expecting.
Sonic Minecraft in 2 sec.: *CUBE!*
Was watching the metal virus videos and surprise surprise!
Glad they fixed it in a performance update. I was in the discord and they were working on it since the first week of constant reports and yes it was only the switch version performing like this.
Groovy moment.
The Fact that i had fun with this when i was playing on Switch though.
I was like, "Let's blast through with Sonic speed!"
Wife: Let's go!
I’ve been binging your videos and would love to see you tackle the topic of Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
Lmao the sonic mod pack on my xbox was kinda really fun. I love it a lot
