The Gert distillation guide says to add the alcohol just as the water disappears into charcoal. If you let the water clear the bottom of filter you are allowing air to be introduced into the charcoal. Thank you for your videos!
Thanks for leaving that in! I remember watching Bob Ross videos. Watching him paint "Happy little clouds" always made me feel like I should be able to paint too. It turned out that I couldn't paint to save my life, but it was a good feeling watching him. Your videos are the same. I love watching your videos. And they make me feel like I should be able to run "happy little stills".

I never thought about the temporary joints from the first videos on filtering. Attempt 1, lots of leakage, "oh well". Attemp 2, I wrapped teflon tape and it holds very well, separates easy and the stuff is cheap enough to not get my nickers bunched. Just my two cents. - Jim
This was absolutely brilliant!!!!! I couldn't stop laughing especially when the hot activated charcoal melted the seal.. please please please leave the bloopers in!!! I do have a critique though... Not of you. Of the public school system.. if any of my teachers were as captivating as you.. I'd have a phd at this point.. you could teach me shakespeare and I'd ace it. As always, we (as a community - but especially me) are sincerely thankful for the time you put into this. I honestly didn't know how much work it really was until we started cutting vids and it's insane the amount of takes, re-takes, editing, transferring, uploading, describing etc... You are our yoda good sir :) and the entire community thanks you for doing what you do. Btw... At first I thought the wax was pure genius, and it may well be but your "accident" (and yes I get it that in trying to rush things you didn't let the "concoction" cool down enough) shows me that here in Australia, where the ambient temperature could easily be 40+C, it may be a problem LOL. Damn it though, it's just such a great idea.

Hello George. I'm cuffed to the single malts. I love a true Whisky, wich is nearly perfect when it runs out of the Parrot. I'm no friend of polishing and filtering. A good product has got to be perfect after sleeping three years and one day in a barrel! after all the options this theme includes, we should ask our self, do we wanna have some shiny synthetical spoiled chemistry, or do we love a fine distilled dram? If i need to " polish " it, i've definatly did something wrong in an earlier process! ;) Happy distilling.

Loyal Subscriber! How about a few wraps of PTFE tape on each inner pipe? Filtering makes sense given that heads will smear throughout the run: they don’t all get left behind in the Heads cut.
Looking forward for part three... I learned that the carbon is good to filter heads and co, so it shouldn't matter if the spirit is diluted or not. As for the tails - how about using bigger grains to filter that out? and can the carbon affect the taste of the spirit by making it taste like carbon?

hey george i have noticed that pouring heads and tails(low wines) through a wine aerator seems to have a deodorizing and "accelerated aging" effect to soften out spirits. it's surprising how much low wines seems to soften , imagine simulating months and months maybe years of aging with just a dozen passes through a wine aerator. any idea what's going on ?

Do you think it would carry over some of the flavors ? Is it worth the trouble. On my rum I run a pot still . From Moon still shining (Roger) hope to here from u soon

Said another way, when the spirit stops coming out of the bottom do I have all of my spirit or is some trapped in the column? Got in my mind when you mentioned that the water was pushed out by the spirit at the beginning of the process.
Finish with water... It will push the remaining alcohol in the carbon down. Just make sure you taste test it to know when to cut it off. I think he covered this in part 1.
Thank you for your videos and taking time out to share them, but can you please use fahrenheit when discussing temps please. After all this is America and we are not on the metric system.
George, although ethanol doesn't attack PVC plenty of the other chemicals present in the distillate do and that's not to mention the wax and glue that you are using. Given the whole point of the exercise is to filter out non-ethanol molecules then we are expecting there to be other organic chemicals in there, and yes, a lot of these do degrade PVC. Acetone being a prime example, people might well filter heads and fores without realising. Just look down the list of chemicals that PVC isn't resistant to and you'll notice that a lot of them are the by-products of distillation. It's just not worth the risk especially given how cheap and easy it would be to make this out of stainless steel.

Oh shoot been there done that, I use hose clamps for added security even if they are not needed, glad your moonshine was not in there or you would be on the floor with a straw lol
@@troythibodeau3833 My thinking is maybe cut it first if the water is not great. Polish water and distillate simultaneously. I use clean and tasty water to cut, so maybe just polish spirit.

If its gonna happen it will happen. The candle wax in those can be a bit melty at body temp so even the slightest warmth will do it

Could you use something like a Britas water filter George? and put your spirit through instead of water? these contain activated carbon filters

Hey George, I'm doing a sugar wash using raw cane sugar, will this make more methanol than a sugar wash with normal sugar?
if you get the brave browser, it blocks all the adds.....dose for me here in OZ

George says to run it high proof, The Milehigh description of the carbon says to cut it first. My takeaway... It doesn't really matter.
@@troythibodeau3833 My thinking is maybe cut it first if the water is not great. Polish water and distillate simultaneously. I use clean and tasty water to cut, so maybe just polish spirit.
