  • Thanks to pdTools for sending this stone for me to test out. Although my results were not stellar, I will revisit this in the coming days, and produce a follow up video. If you are interested in their products, the link is:

    Also thanks to NORTHWEST_KNIFE_GUY for sending pdt to my channel, and making them aware of my content. His link is:

    -------
    These are some direct quotes from my interactions with pdTools about their products:
    -------
    Our company is one of the largest diamond tool manufacturers in the world. In addition, we were one of the first in the world to synthesize diamond. But unfortunately not everyone knows us as a manufacturer of diamond stones for knife sharpening. That's why we want to show our products to the world.
    Price for such stone (as shown in my video) will be 128 USD (without delivery cost). Price will be the same for any grit.
    Or we can use stone with smaller width (8" x 2"). Price for such plate will be 90 USD (without delivery cost).
    To be honest, the most popular stones are those for sharpening knives by machine. This is why we do not have ready-made stones in stock. In general, we can produce any size and even label our stones in a special way. It depends on the customer's wishes. Which means if you want to sell our stones, we can add any inscription you want.
    Regarding your questions:
    Grit size available: from 60 grit up to 15,000 grit (from 250-212 um up to 0 up to 1 um); Grit size does not influence the price; 6"x1" mounted on a high-quality aluminum blank 3 mm or 4 mm / or without blank by request; Customization available; Brand name marking available.
    About freehand sharpening - we are using 8" x 3" stones and have no blank. It`s full diamond stone. For such stones we prefer to use Metal bond.
    We are producing them this way:
    We prepare a mold with the desired dimensions of the product. We pour the diamond charge into this mold (this includes: diamond powder and bond. In our case it is a metal bond, which means it includes a whole list of different components. Copper, tin, etc.). Then all this is sintered at high temperature for 20-30 minutes. And then it is additionally processed. We mark the product, dress the diamond layer, make a chamfer, etc.
    How is this different from ATOMA and other similar products. Sintering provides better retention of the diamond grit on the product. They just don't fall off as often when working.
    If it is a galvanic (electroplated) method of applying the diamond grains to the product, then it is a different situation. In this process, there is no bonding, and the grains are attached to the body. Roughly speaking, the bond hides the grains and helps to sharpen the product, while in galvanizing (electroplated) the grains stick out and because of this they fall off faster. So sintering is better method of producing such things like diamond tools.

    I've been looking forward to this video! That stone is a 28/20 micron stone btw. Also regarding the agglomeration you were referring to on the Venev, it takes 16+ hours of mixing when you approach 5um, it's likely they've rushed this process to lower costs which is why they suck.
    Sorry lots of edits because I'm commenting as I watch. Regarding the stone feeling glazed, these stones can somewhat be tuned by the user, etch the metallic bonding away with ferric chloride to expose more diamond.

      You can get the same effect using loose sic on glass, which is what i plan to do. Appreciate the rest of the info. That is wild they are so labor intensive.

      @@Jef I'm interested to see the next video after lapping then, I wondered if SiC lapping will allow you to create large grain protrusion or if it will fracture them. Looking forward to it 👍

      I was able to flatten them and slightly alter the texture. It isn’t a big difference but is noticeable. Both in sound and feel. Required 4 refreshes of 46grit sic. Reminded me very much of lapping ceramic. I had a similar experience lapping the venev stones, although I don’t recall how many times i had to refresh the sic. Of course there is a video floating around where i did it. This one i didnt bother to record. We shall see if this makes any difference in my results.
      On another note, i used the newer media fixture i got for the Bess C. Last go round i did a test with the older version as well. Memory slipped that my results prove higher on the new one.
      Does it make a huge difference? No. The edge itself seemed to be lacking when i cut paper. Still, the result may have read +/- 20g between them. I will try to show the results next video, using both fixtures.

      @@Jef it's a shame the stone seems to be performing below expectations. I'm looking forward to trying, I ordered a couple different grits so maybe I'll find some success in those.

      Im not super stoked on my stone. It is not behaving well. Between the thinness with no back plate, and the results. Hoping the lapping with sic to give the stone more texture, will change my mind

    Cool video man. magnacut is sweet. I saw you mention something about struggling with this stone and dressing with sic to see if it helps. usually metallic bonded abrasives need to be dressed with an etching solution that eats away the metallic bonding and exposes the diamond abrasives.

    • @Jef
      @Jef  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Yea stroppystuff told me this as well. I don’t have anything to do that currently, so i just used sic. I got the plate flat and textured. Slightly. It isn’t a big difference. You can hear and feel it isnt as glazed as it was in this video. Will it help my results? We shall see.

    Good to hear from you jef. I was looking at these so I'm
    glad your reviewing them. I'm curious about the 6x1's
    they offer for guided systems. I'll have to do some looking
    because I forgot who posted it but they claim only etching
    to service these plates. Interesting. I'll stay tuned and see
    what you come up with.
    Edit: I was referring to their CBN.

    • @Jef
      @Jef  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I’ve tried triple b’s prototype, cbn plates. I never got em to work well. Not sure if it was the abrasive, maybe sharpening (altho i used em about half a dozen times), or the stone quality.
      Whatever the case, i compared em to my sic stones. Cbn never yielded results, as good as the silicone carbide. That isn’t to say pdt cbn is the same. It is just the only stones, i can relate to.
      Edit:: i should still have the videos up on my channe

    Jef good video. I agree with you on that the stone needs a thicker base The fact that your stone kept moving doesn’t lead to the keenest of edges. I’ll be interested in seeing what lapping the stone does for you and any improvements. Thanks for sharing brother 👊🏼

    Great video with lots of very useful info Jeff! I did notice the same thing in regards to the grit, it felt somewhat glazed around 1k or so. I've been experimenting with different SIC powders and anything below 100 grit seem to increase the aggression of the stone a bit, nothing crazy just enough. Looking at the surface under a scope after resurfacing with coarse SIC powder there seemed to be larger pores or peaks and valleys in the surface however hard to see if it had any effect on the diamond. Still feels a bit finer than 600 however cuts very fast and leaves a nice edge overall. They do need to add some kind of base like Atoma but overall I like em'. What I did is just wrap a paper towel around another stone that was in a stone holder and lightly wet it before placing the PDTools plate on there, it didn't seem to move much if at all. One thing I am trying to find out and maybe you know the answer, any idea where I could buy acid locally or online to etch the pate? Would like to play around with that too however not sure if there would be much benefit on this plate after SIC power, maybe necessary on higher grit plates though.

    • @Jef
      @Jef  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Stroppystuff would be the guy to ask. He seems to have the inside track on all diamond things :D The man is full of knowledge. I couldn't begin to tell ya where to get the acid, but I hear ferric chloride works. It is the stuff they etch damascus with, to show off the pattern. Perhaps google maybe in call.
      I lapped mine with 46grit, and see a noticeable difference. Like you said, it isn't huge, but the difference is there. Not only in sound, but feel. Next is just another video test, and we're off to the races. I'm just lazy and don't feel like setting the camera up. Otherwise I would have already done it :p
      The stone option sounds easy enough. Wrap it in paper towel, wet it, and go. I also have some balsa wood, paint sticks for stirring, and a few other oddities to try and raise it. I'll figure something out for my next attempt. The thing moving around did not help my results, that is for certain. Also, I used the newer BESS C test media holder. Last time I did, I noticed it yielded higher results, than my older version. That too will have a side by side comparison, on my next sharpening.

      @@Jef Paint paddles or floor tiles would work better. Best to make a shim
      that will support the center block also. My bridge is 11/32 inch deep. 1/4 inch shim would be close. 1/8 inch paneling two layers deep would be close.
      Cardboard sprayed with sealer to make it water repellant would be a start.
      Alternate possibility is to cut a shallow groove on the top of your end blocks to seat the stone.
