Reclusive suggestions #2: Should you buy plastic acrylic mirrors over glass? No....no you should not

  • A loner's suggestion on which sort of mirror to buy for your home gym. I did exclude one detail which is that if you buy the plastic acrylic mirror in much smaller sizes, the distortion likely won't be an issue. However, if you plan to buy large pieces, as I did, it will most assuredly be an issue.
2022 Edit: As of the date/time of adding this edit, I have had zero issues with the glass mirrors. However, please do go with whichever product appears to be the best fit for your individual needs. I often found myself searching YT for videos of this nature so I just decided to start making a few hoping they may provide a little insight into some average person facing the same dilemma. If you have any questions about the video/mirrors, you need only ask in the comments. Although, admittedly my responses are something other than.....quick.
The beginning of the recently filmed video had image issues so I just added on a previous attempt for the intro. Amazing editing skills....I know.

This has been extremely helpful, I was just looking at buying an acrylic mirror (3mm thickness) at roughly 75 inch high, and 40 inch wide for my garage gym.. that's one piece. Probably would have been a big mistake considering my previous garage gym had a very large glass mirror so my expectations would be high. Thanks

Glad to hear it helped. Mine are still doing great in my garage with zero issues so far.

end up with mirrors looking like a playhouse if they aren't mounted properly

Do you have any pictures or video of the plastic acrylic mirror? Just to have a better idea of the end result. I'be been searching online but in all photos they look perfect, and it would be of help to see the reality of this material

I got rid of it years ago so I don't have any photos. This was just my experience with it but many factors contributed to my experience. Best of luck on your mirror journey

Great video! I’ve been toying with all this. Can I ask with the glass mirrors installation how this was mounted please? Other than concerns on warping with acrylic my other biggest issue is mounting on a dry wall and a glass mirror being too heavy. Thanks

Good question. I had the company I purchased the glass from install it for me. The installation appeared to be quite simple, although perhaps not to those that aren't particular handy (such as myself :/). They put a metal track at the bottom of each mirror, some mirror adhesive on the back, and about 2 small L shaped brackets on the top and 1 or 2 on the side. That was the entirety of it. It's nearly 2 years since I posted this originally and so far I have had zero issues with the mirrors. The plastic acrylic ended up being really quite heavy since I had to mount it first on a relatively thick wood base. But of course, I encourage anyone to get what works best for their individual needs. Hope that helps a bit.

Wouldn't that be a manufacturer's problem though? In the aquarism hobby it's well known that Acrylic is the ultimate material if you want clear + non-distorted view of the insides of your aquarium... A cheap acrylic pane is even better than the more expensive Low-Iron glass that is sometimes used to get rid of some greenish hues and allow a higher percentage of light to go through it.
There's also the fact there are multiple types of Acrylic, coudn't that be the manufacturer that makes these mirrors just use bad ones?

Hmmm could be, but I couldn't say for sure. My sample size is only 1 so I can only speak to my experience. I would encourage anyone to get what is best for their individual needs.
