- MIRRORS | How It's Made
Speaking of the history of Mirrors, China, Greece and Rome have recorded the use of polished metal to make mirrors. To be precise, the Venetians first invented the "glass mirror" in the early 14th century.
After that, they applied the alloy of tin and mercury to the back of the glass to obtain a clearer mirror surface. As a result, this is the prototype of the "modern mirror". Afterwards, Venice listed the manufacturing process of the mirror as top-secret. Nobody really knew how to make mirrors until many years later.

That said, let’s begin!
It was not until 1664 that the French Minister of Finance Colbert managed to introduce the secret of this craft into France, and Venice's monopoly that had been maintained for more than 150 years came to an end. The clear and bright mirror we are using now was improved by a German chemist in 1835, using silver-plated glass as a coating.
Indeed, the mirror has a long history and it was discovered almost at the same time as human beings. As early as in ancient times, ape-man learned to use water as a mirror to sort out self-monitoring. Precisely, the Chinese traditional mirrors have more profound cultural connotations.
Types of Mirrors
Water mirror
Human beings used the natural water surface like a mirror. The calm pool, water-filled rocks and containers are the earliest prototypes of mirrors.
The calm water surface showing one's reflection was considered the water mirror.
Obsidian Mirror
Back in 8,000 BC. Obsidian is produced by active volcanoes and was originally used to make pottery and arrows in Kenya. It is speculated whether this stone has been polished a lot to produce beautiful reflections. This gave us the first mirror in the world!
The problem with using obsidian is that it is too heavy. It is usually not made into a big piece, but a small ornament for the rich. Over the years, obsidian has been increasingly associated with black magic.
Bronze mirror
Okay, let's fast forward a bit now. Between 3,000 and 2,000, we humans began to use mirrors made of bronze. China and Egypt were the first to join this new trend-making mirrors with flat bronze discs.
The handle of the bronze mirror is usually made of wood, metal or ivory, so it is more suitable as a hand-held mirror. However, just like obsidian mirrors, unless you have a lot of money, they are usually made on the smaller side.
One of the best examples of bronze mirrors is the Lighthouse of Alexandria in 280 BC. There is a huge arc-shaped mirror in the centre that can reflect firelight. This reflection looks like a beam of light and helps guide people at sea back to a safe place. Money may not buy happiness, but it can indeed buy lighthouses with fancy mirrors!
Mercury mirror
Okay, now is the time to fast forward a few thousand years. Imagine Italy in the 15th-16th centuries. Well, specifically, we are going to talk about Murano in Venice. Now I need you to imagine an ordinary mirror, but it is better-mirrors are designed so intricately and beautifully that at first, they were only used by royalty and nobles. Sounds great, right?
Although they are beautiful and made of glass, they are coated with mercury. As we all know, mercury is a toxic substance and should not be used every day. So, they are moving in the right direction, but there is still a long way to go!
Soon after, mirrors began to be used for scientific purposes. In the 1700s, mirrors were used to build the first reflecting telescope-but mirrors are still considered a luxury.
SilverMirror and Aluminium Mirror
Now we are moving towards modern mirrors. It only took a few thousand years, but I think we did it this time. In 1835, Justus Von Liebig began to coat glass with silver instead of mercury, creating the silver plating process we still use today.
The glass itself is not very reflective, so it needs some kind of metal coating to make the object visible. As an effortlessly polished and fairly strong material, glass is the perfect choice for making mirrors!
The silver is boiled into a liquid, and then a thin, uniform coating is applied to the glass. You can also spray liquid silver onto the glass, depending on the tools available. After the silver plating process, the mirror is covered with a protective coating to avoid debris in the reflection, and then polished.

Thanks, something to reflect on...
Good one
I sea what you did there
Lmfaooo
💀
😂😂😂
I've never thought of this process until today.
Now a 67 year old knows the secret...👍
Thanks for clearing up that...😎
I worked in a mirror factory. After the silver is sprayed on the copper gets sprayed on. Then it goes through a short oven. Then it goes between 2 rollers that roll on a layer of paint. Usually blue. Then hits a sensor and shoots through a curtain of paint. Usually Grey. Then through a long line of ovens. I worked in the paint room at Arch Mirror North in Bettendorf, Iowa.
If it receives 2 layers of paint (blue and grey) how come the surface is not covered by those layers? How does the paint become "invisible" letting the reflective silver plating show through?
@@kb8077 the silver goes on first, then copper. Then it goes through a short oven, burners on top of oven. Then the paint roller of blue. Then paint curtain. Of course these colors can change. Scrape the back of a mirror and look through a magnifyer.
@@CowboynLilbitsthat's awesome!
" A layer of copper is sprayed to rinse of any excess copper " ??
This video hasn't changed the way I look at mirrors at all.
1:10 so we discovered mirrors and humans at the same time 😂
Great info, very detailed but understandable. I had always wondered about the history of the modern mirror and how they are manufactured. I wonder no more. Thank you.

A few years ago my kids father brought me a full body size mirror form a house he was remodeling. ( the mirror was going in the trash anyway) I had horrible nightmares for the three nights the thing was in my room. On the final night I woke up from the nightmare and looked in the mirror only to see like I was looking through a door that lead to some type of dining room... I got up and took that thing to the trash lol
OK, Alice. We all believe you. 🤣🤣🤣
I loved watching this thanks for sharing
I gona make this 🎉😂❤
Excellent..thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Liked & Subscribed 🙂👍🏻🇨🇦
I find it extremely cool. I have some idea's with mirror's I would like to try. Now that I know there are people who can cut it into the dimensions I want. The ideas are much more realistic.
Did you construct your demon box?

Nice
Makes sense now
I still don’t understand how copper and silver once gone through the oven and sprayed with water would make a mirror. I’ll be visiting this video a lot.
Appreciate it
I made a joke on mirrors, but it didn’t reflect well on me
