    Ugh!! I'm so glad I found this. I'm a lifelong artist (sewing, leather, cricut machine, painting, YOU NAME IT), and my most recent hobby is woodburning.
    I knew I was getting a cheaper pen, but my god, I'd rather watch paint dry lol!! I do, however, use finger oven mitts and use watercolor pencils for my sketches, so after the burn I just take a damp cloth and wipe my sketch away! I'm definitely investing in a better, wired pen.

    I'm not experienced with pyrography yet...but, I am an artist and like to paint what I draw on wood in addition to the canvas. A .05 mechanical art pencil is fantastic, using a light hand. A plastic eraser works wonderfully for any mistakes as it doesn't spread the graphite all over. I hope this helps anyone who wants to draw their own designs without problems.

    Hello, thank you for the tips! I’m completely new to this. I am working on a hiking stick for my nephew at the moment but I’m very interested in this. Any tips for burning on hiking or walking sticks? Thank you 😊

      Glad you found them helpful! Round surfaces can be tricky. Place the stick on a flat surface and on a towel or something that will keep it from rolling. Then prop your hand up on something else (bean bags, books, boxes) to raise your hand to the same level as your burning surface.

    to get the graphite off of a wood surface use 91% isopropyl alcohol. Denatured works also but it is outrageously expensive.

    There's being able to turn the heat down so you can take your time. Then there's having it hot enough so that it doesn't take forever to burn the simplest of designs.

    Great video :) I almost never sketch directly on the wood because the pencil is such a pain to erase, but I may need to buy a sand eraser, didn’t know that was a thing.
    I transfer sketches with plain tracing paper, it’s really easy and low tech and there’s no chemicals :)

      Sounds like a regular solid point burner. If it has a way to turn the heat up or down aside from just plugging it in, then it should be just fine for a solid point burner. I prefer a wire nib machine, but those are almost 10 times the price but they cut my burn time in half and definitely make things easier. If price isn’t an issue, then yes definitely upgrade!

    I’ve been burning off and on since 2005. More so within the last year or two. But my issue is pricing my work, and selling it. I can’t seem to sell it as quickly or well as I’d like, and I always tend to undercharge myself.. And I also do mostly wood but I’d like to try other things such as leather and bone and paper.. and I know there’s other materials too like certain hats but can’t remember what it is

    • @BurnSavvy
      @BurnSavvy  Před měsícem +1

      Felt hats are definitely popular right now. They smell terribly but so do a lot of other mediums. Here’s a video I did on mediums, besides wood:

      Pricing is a tricky one. I am definitely planning to do a video on that. Wayyyyyy too many variables to stuff in a comment. But I totally hear you on this, and it is a common problem.

    One more question? I read somewhere a while ago that a person was actually carving and burning their pieces. Is that really possible? I don’t see how both can be used on the exact portions together, maybe one could be carving using a Dremel tool for the lettering and painting the lettering but burn other portions of the piece. Do I have that right or can you burn and carve say the lettering? Sorry for two lengthy questions!

    • @BurnSavvy
      @BurnSavvy  Před 6 měsíci

      Yes, you can do both. A lot of people do carvings and then use woodburning to decorate it. 👍

  • @CarolinaRaine
    @CarolinaRaine Před 6 měsíci +1

    I have done bare minimum using the cheap tool and got discouraged. I was not sanding my piece good enough and not having the best wood to start out on I was constantly getting my pen in small dips in the wood and I wasn’t applying the even pressure because of this so of course it looked liked crap. I did so much research but like you stated the professional burner is almost a requirement in my view to prevent the discouragement that I went through. I haven’t used the professional burner yet because I thought first I’m going to feed my brain with all the knowledge of this burner. When I was using the basic burner I didn’t watch videos from those who used the professional burner simply because I figured it was not worth it if I’m not using it. You just have no idea what you shared in this video I’ve not heard 85% of the tips and tricks. I regret I don’t have the wood right now to start but I’m forcing myself to take it slow and let my growth be the guiding factor on next steps. I’m so so glad I found your channel so thanks for all that you’ve done to inspire me just from this one video. I’m going now to binge watch more of your content now. One question if you by chance get to see this comment. What color medium looks the best on balsa wood? Can you use gouache on wood? I want my work to pop but not drown out my burning either. Thanks again!

    • @BurnSavvy
      @BurnSavvy  Před 6 měsíci

      Yep that’s hard. Any color works for balsa, I would use something less watery because of balsa’s wood grain. Yes to gouache. Good luck!

    One thing I learned is finger covers (the things that look like mini condoms at the pharmacy 😂) on my thumb and index finger when burning hot. I’ve ended up getting an orange thumb MANY times, so when I’m burning super hot or for a long time, I wear those in order to not stain my fingers brown/orange. It also makes my fingers super grippy to my pen, which is a plus! The stain normally ends up staying for a week or two, and since I work as a barista, I know a customer doesn’t appreciate a “dirty” thumb around something they will consume.
    I love this option because gloves normally throw me off, and take a little time to adjust to. With the thin finger covers, it just feels like skin! It also comes in a multi-size pack for cheap, and has like 50 in there! I re-use them since it’s not being used for an open wound, so its great!

    • @BurnSavvy
      @BurnSavvy  Před 10 měsíci

      I’ll have to look those up! I haven’t heard of them. But I do know that heat sets carbon and graphite into wood. So once the pencil marks are heated, it doesn’t come off without being sanded off. I would be hesitant to use it without testing it out first

I got a really really cheap one over 4 years ago and did one project, for my gf at the time, which didn’t come out that bad. I got into clay sculpting and interested in wood carving as well. Any way my interest in burning is growing. That’s why I got that model. Hopefully it works well and lasts long enough for development. It doesn’t retain heat like I imagine a higher grade one would but it’s way better than the “soldering iron” I used a long time ago on my first burn. This is the perfect beginner machine in my opinion. Is a nice price point and very easy to use. It heats up fast and cold down pretty fast. It’s extremely easy to change the tips. Now this is my first wood burner like this but I like it.

I just jumped in without watching any videos. You said you burn with high heat for long periods. When my wire tip turns orange I back off on the dial until it’s only about half of the tip glowing. Is that too much heat?

    • @BurnSavvy
      @BurnSavvy  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yeah I’ve been through a few too. 😂 With that kind of heat it will melt any pen over long periods of time. I burn at a high heat that doesn’t turn the pen red because I don’t see much difference when I go higher unless I’m using a very hard wood, and I try to break at least every hour when I’m burning hotter. If it’s red, probably better give it a break every 30 minutes or so.
