- Only three motorcycle manufacturers in the world can claim to have been in continuous production for more than 100 years, and Moto Guzzi is one of them. When it comes time to make a historic transformation to the brand, that change carries a lot of weight on its shoulders. With the Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello, the manufacturer alludes - twice - to that long history in the name alone. First, the V100 honors the century of production and maintains form with past naming conventions, while the last part of the name refers to Mandello del Lario, where all Moto Guzzi motorcycles have been made since 1921. When looking at the V100 for the first time, the Moto Guzzi lineage is unmistakable. So, where’s the risk?

You always do great work, Evans. The price seems very reasonable in this age of $27,000 Super Nakeds and $30k+ tourers. I like a shaft drive and any motorcycle I ride needs panniers of some kind.
Last year (2021), I started bird-dawgin this Italian beauty.
Last month (September 2022), I gave Plano, TX Moto Guzzi a $500 deposit.
Early in the morning of 10/17/2022, I submitted my online “reservation” for the 2023 Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello Sport - “Centenario” Livery (premium Verde 2121 color) - Special Edition $17,490.
The customer care representative told me my Order# 190 was the 1st V100 Mandello order received by Moto Guzzi USA.
I’m SUPER EXCITED!
To me, the V100 Mandello is STUNNINGLY EXOTIC & HANDSOME!

Aside from the winglets and power windscreen, this bike really does offer a very unique proposition and it intrigues me! Personally I love middleweight bikes even for touring. They sort of just disappear under you as you take in the scenery and experience. I’ve been shopping around for a dedicated touring bike I can take motocamping, and while chain drive is hardly a deal breaker, this Mandello offers shaft drive, factory option saddlebags that actually complement the design really well, has plenty of power and grunt for some twisty action, and ISN’T a large ADV bike! It also looks like nothing else on the road. Excellent job Guzzi, it looks like you may have hit this one out of the park 👌
I've never understood the penchant for calling ADV bikes tourers. Never wanted one, frankly.
So what were the assorted bikes that Noraly (itchy Boots) took around the globe on her ca. 60,000km tour?
@@dougbright8120 You can tour on anything. However, a 'tourer' is traditionally accepted as the fully dressed, large capacity machine with full luggage. The Enfield Himalayan is very much in ADV territory. I have a Scram and they are delightful machines and yes, I'd consider a tour on it, but it ain't a 'tourer.'
Except…the Mandello is priced very close to a fully-equipped Africa Twin DCT ES (including an OEM Center Stand). And the dearth of Dealers is a cautionary tale! My area of the USA does have a (tiny) MG dealer (whose source of income is repairing BMW boxers!)
this motorcycle is like a blast from the past, its like a early 90s bike but with all of the tech and performance, almost like what the futuristic design philosophy of the time was trying to achieve. cool.

One of the best looking motorcycles I've ever seen. Very modern and yet unmistakably Moto Guzzi.
Everybody giving this bike solid reviews, definitely intrigued for this one.
I'm sure the QS can be solved through a software update.
Evans, you stuffed all the most important points into a quick review. Perfect! Looking forward to a long-term review (where you get to really use the bags!). And looking forward to buying one (after the first-year kinks are worked out!). The Mandello has to be the best-looking bike on offer today, and it's almost too much to bear that it actually delivers, too! This rig is going to give MG a huge brand boost!

Sir may I commend you on a most excellent review? 👏🏽 I’ve watched a half dozen of these video reviews of this bike from bloggers in several languages, in front of that same wall and using much of the same manufacturer supplied footage and none of them has told me as much as your review. Especially grateful for the intel on the seat to peg fit (my 34” inseam being at odds with my lifetime addiction to Italian car & bike brands 😆). Off to seek out your print review now. So refreshing to have a pro journo on the case after so many well meaning but bland bloggers. 👍🏽

After watching your review on the California 1400 a number of years back I bought the bike. I've been a proud & happy owner of a Moto Guzzi ever since... Never once has it had a single issue, rides long and strong and I just might consider the new Mandello based on your review !! Just hope they adopt the new engine on a big rig tourer like the California.

Great review Evans.! I really wanted to know what this bike is like pushing on through twisties and you have answered exactly that. Looking forward to a long term test review with luggage & hopefully 2-up with a pillion’s take on things too. Surely with that much torque it shouldn’t feel under powered. Thanks dude

Been watching as many reviews as possible on this bike, really intriguing machine - the base model looks the nicest in my eyes, the red looks very like the old leMans, but more comfortable, faster etc !
I wish they would offer all colors in the high end. Once you have experienced semi active suspension it is hard to go back. How many people pull over and adjust their suspension for changing road conditions? Most riders barely even adjust preload when a passenger boards the bike.
I’m pissed that for some unknown reason they decided to cross match forks and wheels across the range. Black anodised forks and gold wheels for the base models and gold forks and black wheels for the S models. Such a bad idea IMHO.

Hi, picked up my new red V100 on Monday. Lucky lad , it’s beautiful in red with the gold wheels. Only done 28 miles, so looking forward to running her in . I bought the panniers, centre stand, oxford heated grips. For less than the S model and have change left over 😁👍
Excellent reviews - both video and text. I quite like your style Evans - calm, smooth, heavy on substance, and very thorough. You cover things I wouldn't have thought of, and when you do I I think "oh yeah - that's good to know". Curious to know more about how the manual shifting compares with that of something (like a Triumph triple) that's known for light, positive shifting? You've said "the smoothest I’ve ever encountered on a Moto Guzzi" but I've never ridden a Guzzi so have no idea.
The shift throw is a little longer and requires a little more effort, but I wouldn’t call it heavy by any means.

Nice review. Love this bike but not overly fussed with S model, t's quick shifter & price. I'd need to test ride it to be sure but I'd be inclined to go for the base model I think.
Quick shifter in the lower gears do not work smoothly on my Ducati Supersport either. I categorize this new Guzzi in the same slot as the Supersport just more into touring. Great effort from Guzzi and hope it sells really well. Love to try it out.
excellent review and thank you; Can you comment on a comparison between this bike and the ducati supersport 950s and the v2 multistrada? Does the MG's sport suspension and ride rival or exceed the supersport ? I have never driven a smooth shaft drive before. Though improved, is there still the classic shift-shaft-clunk that most shafts have? Thanks

Great review, it would be perfect without all the electronic aids and gimics, why I love my v11 is the symplicity and character yeah its not the fastest or sharpest but it makes you feel special riding it and that's what Guzzis are all about.
Great vid....does it have hazard warning lights? I couldn't see the button on the LHS grip
Actually, you might want to make more comment about the move to a modern gearbox/clutch, more like a Japanese bike.
As far as the quickshifter goes, on my MV Tourismo Veloce I don’t use the quickshifter on 1-2 or 2-1 changes either, the clutch gives much better modulation of the change. On older Guzzis I love the fact that left and and right hand curves require different approaches - on right-handlers it’s throttle on and it will tip in, on left-handlers you must use a trailing throttle until you hit the apex. It makes for interesting sports riding, and after a while becomes a habit.
I’m looking to order the Mandello V100 once they arrive in Australia and I can test ride one.

Been riding Guzzi for years It goes into N when you don't want it to and won't go into N when you want it to. But I love it!!!!So excited to see this in other bikes.
i have a bmw s1000rr, and also have a problem shifting from 1 to N - often find 2 instead. I've now gotten used to it and with a fine touch of the foot it's not so much of a problem, but when driving in stop/start traffic and the engine gets hot, it can be a challenge to find N.
I have an early K1300S BMW, I hardly ever use the quick shifter during 1st and 2nd, unless it's under load.
Also finding this very interesting. Curious about tank range, but also about what the 2 year refresh will entail with this 1st Gen water cooling effort.
Tank is under 5 gallons...
thank you for your reply about airflow, I feel a lot of manufacturers fail to understand the effects of airflow particularly regarding helmet buffering once over a speed of 100 kms (60 m/h)

Very informative video as I am debating at this very moment of trading in my 2022 Triumph Speed Triple 1200rr in on this exact bike. Coincidentally, you are 5'11" like myself, which really helps me understand the seating and legroom. Again very well done.

I've never found quickshifters helpful in lower gears. Frankly, I prefer manual changing anyway, despite having had them fitted to BMWs and Yamahas. When I get the Mandello, I expect it will be the same. Nice gimmick, but I doubt I'll use it much.
Normal shifting is so much more satisfying too and you're in full control with the clutch

It is possible you feel that way because you have never experienced an excellent quick shifter? The Triumph quick shifter is superbly smooth and slick at low speeds around town. Downshifts mid corner, say on a roundabout are simple and leave your hand free for indicating. Out on the open road my pillion doesn’t notice the gear changes it’s so seamless.
Quick shifter on my Ducati actually affected my riding enjoyment - I cant see how it is an improvement from using clutch.
@@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff Entirely possible. My experience is with Yamaha and BMW. Both systems worked just fine, however, not as smooth as a manual change. I cannot comment on the Triumph one.

I have a 2021 V7 and I love the way this bike looks although I miss the gold wheels but when you consider you can get a Tuono V4 for similar money and still do some sport touring it becomes a harder buy for me.
The Tuono is a different beast. The Tuono is a hooligan bike, this is a sport touring bike for mature riders. If there was a bike that can do everything my garage would have one bike instead of six. All bikes have different personality, they evoke different emotions and moods.
My wife asked me why I need so many bikes when I can ride one at a time. My response was….why do you have two drawers of panties when you can only wear one? Needless to say….it didn’t go well

Are you sure you weren’t putting slight pressure on the gear lever between 1st and 2nd a lot of riders do this to anticipate an early gear change and can cause false neutrals, just a thought

That color combo is growing on me.
I own a Moto Guzzi… all of them have a problem with shifting from 1st to 2nd. You really have to pull that that lever up hard. But they are such fantastic bikes. I don’t understand why they aren’t more popular.

If Moto Guzzi put this engine in a bike that has the style of the V85TT I would be one of the first ones in line to buy it.
This is just the first bike to feature this engine. I think they will release 2 more bikes with this engine in it in the next few years. An ADV and maybe a roadster or cruiser with less tech and a more retro look, idk.
I'm looking forward to the first reviews of the "base model" Mandello. Hopefully the standard suspension is good, because the rest of the S features don't really interest me. Well except that gorgeous green color.
Heated grips are pretty important in northern climes. I presume that will be an option on the base model.
@Mark Ellott I live in northwest Ohio so I'd definitely be a target audience for heated grips lol but I don't stress them. If they're available as an option on the standard bike I'd probably check that box, but I wouldn't *not* buy it if they weren't.

My 2022 BMW 1250 R/T goes into a false neutral coming down in the twisties... The quick shifter is nasty from 1st to second and I believe it is because of the 2-Cylinder engine, I use the clutch for casual shifting if I am under hard acceleration I short shift and it works perfect...also, the fuel capacity on the Guzzi is tiny they blew it.
Damn Evans, I just bought a Triumph Tiger Sport 660 to sit alongside my T120. How am I going to explain buying a Mandello V100 to my wife?

Two points. The fins on the engine are for air cooling. Only the heads are water cooled. Also, the quick shifter on the BMW boxer acts the same as you describe here. Maybe it's a result of a longitudinal engine and/or shaft drive somehow.
The QS on my MV Agusta Turismo Veloce is exactly the same. Never works well for upshifts between first and second, downshifts fine once warmed up. In higher gears it’s great in both directions but definitely upshifts smoother the more positive the throttle is.
I have tried latest 1250 boxer engines from bmw and just tried the v100 today, and the bmw quickshifter works way better. On the bmw, the 1-2 works on high revs, but on the v100 is just impossible... tried multiple times... and either you get a false neutral or the few times it works it just looks like the bike is going to break... it's pitty because other than that is just a nice bike
@@alexjuez9321 Interesting. The 1-2 shift on the Beemer could be quite a bit better but it's livable. I make sure I'm on the throttle when I try.

Much more character than Tracer and really good looking.
More than 30 years ago, Yamaha introduced this style of motorcycle with the TDM model, which was quite misunderstood at the time. Now you can see that TDM was ahead of its time. Put some new technology and voila.
Anyway, moto-guzzi made a spectacular motorcycle, Bravo.
As I am not as much on the news as I used to be, I didn't see this coming. I like it though, I like it very much. Looking good. But one thing: if you're shifting between first and second, you really don't hit a false neutral, do you? You actually hit the real neutral right there.

I am very interested in the new Moto Guzzi. But I don’t understand your statement about Torque steer. I rode and restored older Moto Guzzi’s for many years . I never noticed any Torque steer on any of the Big Twins.

Base model looks soo pretty, especially wheels. But adaptive suspension is awesome. Finally some pictures with a topcase. Topcase is really ugly....but the wife says it's a must 🤷♂️
The rack is pretty hideous. It's almost as if they gave the main designer a day off and let the office boy have a go.
I don't like the cables of the heated grips, other brands found ways to intergrade those trough the handlebars

Can any bike manufacturer figure out how to make the licenses plate mount account for 30 percent of the bike's style and design?
I think to be euro compliant the rear ‘fender’ has to extend to at least the tangent to the back of the rear tire.

Yes you said what height you are a lot of reviewers fail to mention that and yes, you mentioned about wind buffering on your mid body, but you failed to say did the wind whack your helmet, which is the really important thing, too many fairings fail because they do not push the wind just over the helmet.
In the down position, the bulk of my torso was in clear air. With the windshield in the high position, the airflow was lessened without buffeting that I can remember. Unfortunately, the shortness of the ride and the lack of any extended highway riding kept me from playing with the windscreen height extensively.
I'm really not sure if I would trust a quickshifter enough, especially down, for the first 2 gears. Just use the clutch and you know you're in complete control. You talk about false neutrals. It's likely that you put the bike in neutral yourself. Which can be v risky. Thanks for the review. Interesting. I'll always associate Guzzis with air cooled engines, however.
The best looking Moto Guzzi bar none. An excellent bike.
A lot of people, including myself, not happy with the S Model not getting the gold wheels as shown in the early pre production bikes shown as early as last year. Bait and switch.
No, not bait and switch. A pre-production model is just that, there was never a guarantee that the production model would be exactly the same. As it is, I prefer the black wheels.
I have two Guzzis, a V85TT and a V9 bobber. I’d like to get this V100, too, but this is so much different than the traditional Guzzis…..I don’t think that I want the first year of production. Let’s them figure out some of the bugs first. As for the quick shifter nonsense….I couldn’t care less, I’m old school, I like using the clutch and rev matching.

Reviewers dance around the 'G-word' regarding the winglets ... someone will finally say it like it is. It hadn't occurred to ma that the cylinders were rotated-thanks for pointing that out, Evans. Now I think I know why the headers have shrouds.
I guess the question is: Are the winglets necessary? No, we’ve been doing fine without them. Are they cool, and do they have a noticeable effect? Yes, I think they make the bike more desirable.

Love Guzzis, but not a fan of the short wheelbase for my 6'1" frame.
I've been infatuated with Moto Guzzi since I was 13 years old (when dinosaurs ruled the earth). Now I'm thinking I need to trade my late model Gold Wing for one of these beauties! All the road manners I like without the extra weight. And it is gorgeous.

I like almost all of this bike. The headlight looks like it's from 1998, and not in a good way, but more like a blob.
The 85 is getting 200,000 miles. Will this do same
