Messi is certainly an exceptional player, but Maradona was an alien from another planet. He made the ball talk to him on and outside the pitch. No other player dominated a World Cup final stage like he did in 1986. His second goal against England in the quarter final is a masterpiece for eternity. He's simply the G.O.A.T!

However, you should not forget those exceptional players, who were around him and who used to feed him inside the box. However, Maradona was an inspiration for his teammates and could made the difference alone in so many decisive games. No other player could do those magical strange things with the ball like he did. Las circunstancias eran peores, los campos estaban en peor estado, los jugadores no estaban defendidos por las reglas. No estoy seguro de que Messi pudiera driblar de la misma manera en un campo de 30 o 40 años atrás, como lo hizo Diego. Además, Diego era pateado y golpeado en casi todos sus partidos, y muchos jugadores se salían con la suya. Lo más importante, Diego ganó la Copa del Mundo para Argentina. Maradona es y fue único, el más grande.

Maradona and Messi both have the ability to win a match on their own. That's why they are the greatest.
Maradona faced tougher challenges than Messi on field as the rules were loose in that era . FIFA took care later on , so that the ball players can play their games, as that is where the beauty of football lies. I have seen both of them playing, and I can say Maradona faced MORE BRUTAL CHALLENGES FROM THE DEFENDERS in each and every match, almost twice in every 15-20 mins. People who have watched matches back then, will surely agree with me. As there was no star player in his team, the opponent targeted him, as they knew that stopping him will stop everything. Whereas in Messi's team, in Argentina, we have Higuain , De Maria and Aguero who are great players on their own.Same in Barcelona, Iniesta, Xavi etc are great players. Stopping Messi won't stop everything. So the defenders DOESN'T BRUTALLY CALLENGE MESSI , partly because of the TOUGHER RULES OF FIFA, partly because they are more professional now, they DONT HAVE ANY INTENTION TO INJURE A LEGENDARY PLAYER LIKE MESSI.

I don't understand how some people can say that Messi isn't as good as Maradona simply because he plays with other world class players. Whenever Messi isn't playing for Barcelona, you notice the difference. He has single handedly dismantled some of the world'd best teams and defences time and time again - Man Utd under Ferguson, Bayern Munich when Neuer was 3rd for the Ballon D'Or after winning WC2014, Real Madrid pretty much every year. Messi always has the ability to create a goal out of nothing. And he has it all - dribbling, passing, finishing, shooting, free kicks and of course his pace. That's what's so special about Messi, even if my team was playing against him on a terrible day, I would still be petrified whenever he gets the ball, he can switch a game in an instant.

Its amazing how similar both of these players were in different era's. Messi had a lot of pressure his whole career because of the expectation of everyone who kept comparing him to Maradona. To me Maradona was the best player I've ever seen play. His performance at the 86 World Cup is something im not sure we will ever see again to help his Country almost single handedly win the World Cup.
This is something that has weighed Messi down heavily when playing for his Country. To try and help lift his team and do it single handedly just like Maradona did and I think its the reason why we never saw the best of Messi at the world cup, as he was just trying to hard. He tried to do it all himself instead of bringing his team mates into the game like Maradona was so good at.
But in the end both great players and Argentina are very lucky to have 2 of the best ever.
Messi just didn't have teammates who were as good except Di Maria who had injuries during KO stages,now he has better teammates who idolized him when they were younger and had as much hunger as him and Angel to win trophies for Argentina and they eventually succeeded

I passionately love both..but don't forget that times were different in the days of Maradona, defenders were butchers as star players didn't have referee protection like now (one example comes to mind is Van Basten, one of the greatest strickers of all time, had to retire at 27 because of injuries). Also pitches, balls, boots, training, diets.. are A LOT better now. That's why we are seeing a lot more player longevity nowadays. So it's unfair to compare players from today with players from 40 years ago.
