BWWWAAAAAAA! I can't believe I lived to see the day someone is reacting to a Starcastle song!!! I'd wager that very few ppl has ever even HEARD of this group! Whoever suggested this song to them, thanks a bunch!!
yep... I've listened to a LOT of classic rock and never heard of Starcastle.
@@andyzehr9839 Back when AOR FM radio had not yet gone fully corporate, DJ's in some locales still retained the power to pick their own playlists for their shows. A few of them who liked Yes would elect to air a Starcastle song now and then. Overall, Starcastle was not a commercial success. I'm unaware of the band getting any AM radio play anywhere. 1976 is almost half a centurty ago now. Starcastle is unlikely, due to its obscurity during its heyday, to be included in an "oldies" themed FM rock radio weekend, or in one of those 15 CD bundles of "Hits of the '70's" being sold on TV to the nursing home resident market.
My good friend for 40+ years plays lead.
@@Yesquire0 I heard these guys many years ago...not sure how long ago, but at least forty. They got slagged for being a Yes copy, but, so what. They were good. It's like anyone playing hard rock was compared to Led Zeppelin back in the day, but that's how things were able to evolve. Starcastle also has some Emerson Lake and Palmer vibes, but so what? Starcastle were great musicians. Just go with it. Great music. So, I agree with you total.
I saw Starcastle 3 times in my lifetime. As a keyboard player I followed them religiously, they were fantastic, I have all of their albums. I classify them as progressive rock.
This was a great debut album. The lead singer, Terry Luttrell, was the original lead singer for REO Speedwagon.
Great song
STARCASTLE!!!!!!!! Holy crap! NO one reacts to this! This song is fantastic! So Yes-like, great Melodies, angelic vocal harmonies and that that bass! Thank you for reviewing this one!
Starcastle is also from Champaign, Illinois and so weee the members of REO Speedwagon. Other Famous Rock Groups from Illinois are 1. REO Speedwagon 2. Styx (Chicago) 3. Chicago (Chicago) 4. Cheap Trick (Rockford) 5. Survivor (Chicago) 6. Head East (Springfield)
We love Starcastle!!!
OMG. I almost saw them in Hollywood back in the day - we were there but it was so crowded it was a fire hazard. Unbelievable group.
I bought this album and loved listening to it at 17 years old. Still do. What a beautiful, intricate well-constructed song!
so happy you looked at this. I saw them in the late 70s. they opened for Laroux, Laroux did New Orleans Ladies. I wasn't there for them. I was a prog rock junkie
I was trying to remember when I saw these guys. After a search through Concert Archives, I saw it must have been in 1976 when they warmed up for Gentle Giant in Philadelphia. Anything Yes-like definitely appealed to me.
Me and my grandson would say this sounds like starcastle what a great song I saw them in 78 to kool
We used to call them Yescastle back in the day. Basically, Yes, for all of us Midwestern Cornbillies.
They're from Champaign, Illinois so growing up in Springfield, Illinois we got to see them perform alot. I was never a huge fan but, admittedly, they were all good players.
This song painted this picture for me :
Yes and Styx are brothers rough-housing in the living room and dad (Crosby, Stills, Nash) walks in and breaks them up every few moments to show them what's what in the chorus.
Love the memories and this song!
I went to the record store...yes that long ago, and I flipped this album over...it said Keyboards, so I bought it, great album.
talk about forgotten classic albums.....very good yes like from the middle of the usa....even saw them live
My first concert
Wow, didn't think I'd see a reaction to this. Great choice! Btw, anybody hear the similarity to Yes in this band?
😂
HIGHLY underrated band!!! They put out several unique and great albums! Check the out1 Great vocals and synthesizers!
I had this record back in the seventies. I've always been a big yes fan and they reminded me of yes I cannot believe after all these years someone is reviewing this. Great reaction
Wow can't believe it. Loved them. They did sound like Yes but had sort of thier own thing going on. Great musicians.
i I suggested this song awhile back knowing you would like it! Love seeing somebody finally react to these guys! They do have more good tunes!
I was not expecting to see that album cover on a thumbnail! A few years ago my brother and I picked up a copy for our record collection from the $1 cheap-o bin at our local record store. Picked it because of the album art!
Wow this was a blast from the past, I actually picked up this album myself. Big Yes fan here, sad that I only got to see them in concert one time, I was 3rd row floor though. Just came across your movie reaction channel, you should check out Dazed and Confused or better yet Almost Famous. Might I suggest mentioning all of your channels at the end of your videos. Great to see you continue to grow.
Great reaction Wilburns PEACE ✌
You guys are a very cute couple! I can tell the music really made you think and appreciate the magic of Starcastle!
Terry Luttrell was the lead singer, he was also the lead singer for REO.
I saw starcastle on 2 different tours w RUSH...Lady of the lake & Fountains of light
Agree, YES vibes
I am a HUGE Yes fan and as soon as I saw their album cover, I knew Starcastle would be great.. But man...they are Yes JUNIOR.
Great Album, great Band. I'm searching for this Album on vinyl for years, but in Germany it's hard to get it in good shape. But the day will come, hopefully.
One part of this reminded me of a song from Emerson Lake &Palmer( a Synth. part) I think in this song they do remind me more of E.L.P.
We used to call them “Yescastle.”
AWESOME 👍 I have all the Starcastle albums, ( which there aren't enough of)
A largely overlooked band for the mere fact they were seen as Yes imitators. That being somewhat true, fantastic musicians and if you're going to imitate someone, it might as well be the best. BTW, Terry Lutrell is the lead vocalist , formally of REO Speedwagon, displaced by ego tripping Kevin Cronin who turned them into the rock and pop disaster they became.
Starcastle!! I bought this album (ahem! Actually, 8-track! 😯) in 1976, I was pleasantly surprised that they sounded like Yes. The debut album is fire! The sophomore 'Fountains of Light' (1977) is pretty decent as well. It's too bad that the comparison to Yes kinda doomed them to the cutout bin after those two.
Twenty years ago or so I saw the debut CD at a used music store for $3 and I snagged it up!! 🌟🏰 😎
They were the opening act for a Yes tour, I think it was the CTTE tour.
I remember well when I bought the first Starcastle record. I felt like you: "woah, that sounds like YES". Unfortunately (to my liking) they waned on the next albums. But I have to listen to it again. Side note: halfway through the song they allude to a theme that introduces the finale of Stravinsky's Firebird. This is how YES (e.g. on the YESSONGS) used to open their concerts.
Lots of Gentle Giantisms going on there
I saw Starcastle in concert at Penn State University back in the late 1970’s. I haven’t listened to them since my college days. Thanks for the reaction.
Great band seen them a few times very big in the Midwest. Kshe was one of first stations to play them
I do believe this is a kshe classic.
This is my first time listening to this band. I like them and also the album cover. From the title of the song and the album cover, I am right away takes me to the Arthurian legends. I don't know if that is what this song is based on. The Lady of the Lake's name is Nimueh (one of the variations) the one that gives King Arthur Excalibur. For more Arthurian legends take a listen to The Lady of Shalott a poem put to song by Loreen McKennitt.
I'm pretty sure you're right about the Arthurian reference. You can find more Starcastle albums here:

I'd almost forgotten about Loreena McKennitt's "The Visit". Great album
@@mutantplants1 Thanks. Yes, that is a great album of what I remember. I also liked the album that has "Dark Night of the Soul". Another great poem she put to song.

The Mask And Mirror
Elliptical Seasons is another Star Castle Song to consider.
Emerson Lake and Palmer and yes prog rock
I'm so glad you got around to this band. I knew you would like this, as it definitely has that Yes sound. Fun fact: the singer, Terry Luttrell was the original singer for R.E.O. Speedwagon, he was only on their debut album. He sounds different on the R.E.O. album. You should check out Gypsy Woman's Passion or Sophisticated Lady from that R.E.O. album. Both bangers.
Chod, this was their debut album released in 1976. The next 2 albums were pretty good too, then not so much IMO. Take 1 cup Yes, 1/2 cup Kansas, 1/2 cup Styx and just a pinch of ELP and that’s pretty much how you get to Starcastle. I was drawn to them because they did sound like Yes, the Fragile and Close To The Edge albums, in particular. The Fragile album by Yes predated this song by Starcastle by about 5 years. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so Yes should be very flattered. Great reaction and HAPPY BIRTHDAY young man. 🎂🎉
Never thought I would see anyone reacting to starcastle
The American version of yes..lol
First off let me say it's been a blast watching your videos. I first heard about you thru JustJP awhile back.
Secondly, the videos with your wife have been wonderful. She is a blast!
Third I am a huge Yes fan and have been delighted that you enjoy them so much.
Four when this came out Yes fans went crazy about this album. Why? When this was released, Yes did not put out an album that year. Starcastle filled the void. Their first 3 albums are great...then they fell off.
Five..because of this video I finally subscribed to you...I usually watch on my TVs but cannot access comments I'm responding via my phone.
Six (and last). I'm surprised you haven't done any Yes with Dee.
Plus if you want some more of a Yes vibe check out the Band Druid...album Toward the Sun. It's Awesome! Oh do dig into more Starcastle.
🎶🌴😎
I had never heard this song, but something in the deep recesses of what's left of my mind remembers the name Starcastle. If I had just heard this playing I'd have immediately thought it was early 70's Yes. I like it, though. I mean, that period of Yes is among my all-time faves. It just takes some getting used to the idea that another band so directly used their sound. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!
I'm not of the school of thought that any band that borrows so heavily upon a distinct sound of an earlier band must need dismissal rather than a fair listen. I own the first two Starcastle albums. I still spin them now and then. Not that they are as good as, or better, than classic Yes, but they are music in the style of Yes, which is a good thing, and a nice alternative after you've spun Close to the Edge 500 times.
Whether the similarity of their sound (this song sounds like a medley of Yes tunes, mainly YiND) is a legitimate criticism depends, to me at least, on some exterior factors. On stage, the guys donned outfits that resembled the outfits Yes wore on contemporary tours. That maybe puts them over the line that separates sincere imitation from stalking. There is some merit to the idea that music would be more fulfilling if each band found their own unique sound rather than adopting the sound of a band that started out before them. The counter to that argument is that the sound of Yes was so unique. Nobody sounded like them, and there was lots of room for other bands to take that sort of sound, explore its possibilities, and produce new and different songs. Think of all the bands playing standard rock music in the singer, lead guitarist, bass guitarist, keyboardist, and drummer style, with a 4/4 time signature. They sound a whole lot like the bands that came before them, but rarely (Foreigner vs. Bad Company?) get dumped on for doing so the way that Starcastle got derided for basing its compositions and overall sound on the music of Yes.
If you want to revisit (have you reacted to Hogarth-era Marillion yet, or even heard of that band?) Starcastle, I'd suggst "Elliptical Seasons": czcams.com/video/sSZepYc219Y/video.html
But I'd prefer some exploration of Marillion, a band I now consider as being superior to Yes and Genesis. Try "Neverland". Have your lady present when you do. It's a love song. The intro could include her gently waving at the camera and whispering "here I am".

StarCastle sounds like Yes, but it is my understanding that they formed before Yes and developed their sound independently. The is also an ELP vibe to this song too. I was unaware of them until I and my sister became Yes fans when Yours is No Disgrace we came out and we came across this album while looking for other Yes albums. Have been a fan ever since.
At 5:32 that whole organ sequence sounds very ELP to me..😃
Yes it's been around since 1968.
can you do a reaction to Prison Women by R.E.O Speedwagon
Chod, I have never heard this before and loved it and your reaction to it. Can you please do a reaction to David Gates song " Goodbye Girl" from 1978? It's a great mellow love song and his singing voice sounds fantastic on this song. David Gates was the former lead singer of early '70's band Bread. They had hits like " Baby I'm A Want You, " Make It With You", " Lost Without Your Love". Have a good night.
If you two really liked this song...the rest of this album is on the same level, you would also like other bands like Flash(Small Beginnings), Nektar(A Tab in the Ocean) and England (Three-Piece Suite). Love the review, keep it up!
They came out with several albums in the late 70's to early 80's the other one guys should listen to Is Lights from the Light album
Yes the have th Yes vibe
Good you brought up Yes. They’re actually close enough that some in the prog rock scene dislike Starcastle for being “Yes ripoffs”.
Dollar Tree Yes.They were pretty damn good though lol
The first two Starcastle albums were *_fantastic._* (Even their third one had a couple of good songs on it, but they were already starting to "go commercial." By the 4th album, they had lost the [YES] vibe, trying to reach a pop audience. That said, I never understood the criticism I was hearing then from YES fans who derided them for "copying" YES. I'd say, "Are you kidding me? Imitation is the best form of flattery!"
My reaction to Starcastle was, "GREAT! Another band that can play the kind of music YES creates! Obviously influenced by them, but still creating totally unique musical compositions!"
Clearly they were 100% inspired by YES (& a little ELP). You hear it in Gary Strater's bass playing, in the vocal harmonies, in their approach to composing longer songs, and even their guitarist sounded a lot like Steve Howe here and there. Strater, like Chris & so many other great bassists, died from cancer (Chris 11 yrs later) I promise you, Chod, if you listen to their first two albums complete, you will not be disappointed!
Wow. I'm like the same age as your folks. So, what music were they playing for you that you had to "discover" Yes as an adult?
This would be a great reaction. Neal Morse Band - So Far Gone
Definitely imitation Yes, with a Keith Emerson keyboard break. This album and Fountains of Light were pretty good. I wasn't thrilled with Citadel.
I didn't see them until 1979, after they'd released a fourth album (which I didn't buy) and changed lead singers. I think the singer was annoyed that the small audience was calling for this song all night.
They started out as a Yes tribute band... they took it to another polish and level with their own compositions, a natural evolution... it was rumoured that Yes returned the favor and began to borrow on their sound directly .. (has happened with other bands over the years)..
Citations, please. I am fairly certain that you are wrong.
Starts off a bit like 'Rush' then goes the full 'Yes'.....great band though even though they are shamelessly Yes clones....but they do it so well. I have just discovered Starcastle and have now ordered their first self titled album on LP.
React to 'Elliptical Seasons' for more full on 'Yes vibes'.
For one of the best in prog rock, you got to check out Happy the Man, a 70s band from the DC area. Here's one of my favorite cuts for their amazing debut album:
czcams.com/video/eI4MvuFzb4g/video.html
so glad you go to Starcastle..love them... now you need to get to Transatlantic...but why the stop of the song and talk..what happened to waiting until the end
ELP not ELO
Seen them open for Johnny and Edger Winter in the 70's. Just couldn't get into them at all. Jim
Excellent musicians but they copy YES to closely but its still a good song
U gots to be kidding Starcastle a band tried to be Yes and failed terribly. But thanks for the memories of good laughs. They have moments but copyright was never in forced.
Copy of YES
