    Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels was designed for people who mastered the original. Poison mushrooms are just the beginning. There are also warp zones that take you backwards! There are also invisible blocks you need to find in order to progress in some levels. Not to mention the platforming can be brutal. There is a silver lining. In the first level, you can do a shell trick where you can get a whole lot of extra lives. You still have to be careful, because if you do that trick for too long, the number of lives will go back around to one, and it'll be game over. This was fixed in the Super Mario All-Stars version.

    The Alg recommended this video, very fun to watch. You look young. I'm in my 40s. Unless you were there, you cannot understand what a huge deal Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World., and Mario 64 (3D, I know, but still) were at the time. As someone who was there for all of it, I love seeing younger gamers actually engaging with these old games. This is what was new, this is what we had, and I can attest that I had just as much fun with a new NES or SNES game then as I do now with a new Switch game. It's great to see younger gamers put the bad graphics and clunky controls asside an actually enjoy these games the way we did when we were kids and this was cutting edge.
    p.s. You're dead on about Japanese SMB2 (Lost Levels). We all thought that game was bullshit back in the day, too. It's not fun hard. Castlevania III is fun hard. Ninja Gaiden is fun hard. JSMB2 is bullshit hard. Yeah, you can beat it. I've beaten it. But it doesn't feel good.

    I have a very similar story about this from when I was a kid. I used to live next door to my aunt and my older cousins for the first 6 years of my life, and around my 5th or 6th birthday I got a Super Nintendo and one of my older cousins, who was like my big brother, gave me his old copy of Super Mario All-Stars as my first game since he was done with it and had just gotten Donkey Kong Country - which had just come out at the time. The only problem is I would play DKC A LOT whenever he was home so I really wanted that game more than anything. So he made me a deal which I will never forget: "If you beat all the games in Super Mario All-Stars, I'll buy you your own copy of Donkey Kong Country." I was excited and got to work, beating Mario 1 & 3 that weekend. Then I tried 2 and Lost Levels, and kept dying.
    I look back on it now and think to myself that that was the cruelest thing a teenager could do to a child. I ended up buying Donkey Kong Country myself a few years later😂

    • @legoboy7107
      @legoboy7107 Před 7 měsíci +12

      @@PamonhasDePiracicaba Nah, It's also still a Mario game. It builds on the previous games, was intended to be the next 2D Mario game, was called SMB5 in development, was the only Yoshi game made by the core Mario team rather than being outsourced, etc., and both Miyamoto and Tezuka themselves have explicitly said it's a core Mario game and directly contrasted it to the later Yoshi games that they said are spin-offs. Not to mention there's several things in it that would end up influencing and returning in the core Mario series going forward as soon after as Mario 64. Only reason people label it as not a Mario game these days is because you're not literally playing as Mario most of the time (which that on its own doesn't make much sense as a point), added a bunch of new unique stuff to evolve the formula and make it stand out (I guess it has to be samey like the NSMB games to count for people) and because they ended up making a whole spin-off series based on those new ideas _after the fact,_ and I guess that's somehow supposed to _retroactively_ revoke its mainline Mario status for some reason, even though it would be the exact same game if the later Yoshi spin-offs were never made. Even a recent post on the Switch News said that Yoshi's Island is both a Mario game and a Yoshi game, not just a Yoshi game. Think of it like an episode in a TV show that's clearly a main episode in the main show, but introduces stuff that makes it also end up serving as a backdoor pilot for a spin-off show later on; that doesn't revoke the original episode's mainline status just because a spinoff series was made based on it.
      As for Super Mario Land 3, similar story except even more so, because with that one literally the only reason it's "not a Mario game" is because you're not literally playing as Mario, you're instead playing as...Bad Mario, the evil Mario doppleganger who was the villain of the previous game and was shown to have similar abilities to Mario. Wow, so different. That's it and that's not a good reason. The game otherwise still plays exactly like a Mario game, _especially_ Super Mario Land 2 which just looking at it is obviously the game it's a sequel to, and is continuing the same story of the rivalry between Mario and Wario from the previous two Mario Land games, and in fact is the conclusion to that story as Wario finally gets what he wants at the end without taking from Mario. Not to mention it's the only Wario Land game to play like the other Mario games (other than the Virtual Boy one), because Wario Land 2 onwards completely changed up the gameplay and formula, but Wario Land 1 still has the same Mario formula, mechanics, block system, power up and health system (even still having the normal Starman powerup, that's not in the other Wario games), etc., ALL of which was scrapped in WL2 onwards, and is particularly similar to Mario Land 2 at its core. So, it plays very similarly to Mario Land 2, is the ONLY Wario Land game to play that way as the later non-Mario sequels are very different, and it's the direct sequel story-wise to Mario Land 2, and is made by the exact same team, therefore it is the real Mario Land 3 and is a Mario game, only reason it wouldn't be is the character you happen to be playing as despite him just being Mario's bad doppleganger (I guess Luigi U isn't a Mario game either then).
      Sorry that this got really long and sounds ranty, I'm half-asleep writing this right now and am just typing the words as I think of them lol, and I'm already bad at being concise as is haha. Just laying out several points for why these two games do in fact count as real Mario games.

    • @tronfreak6066
      @tronfreak6066 Před 7 měsíci +3

      i very much agree with you on the Wario Land part, looking at it from a perspective of the feeling of the game. Yoshi's Island on the other hand, even though it's called SMW2, just feels SO much different to any of the other Mario games before & (at least the close ones) after it. The egg mechanic, the flying mechanic, the red coin / flower collecting, the weird transformations, the dizziness by touching the pollen - just doesn't feel Mario to me at all, at least not for that time. I would still recommend everyone to play this game and 100% it, because it's one of the best of its era. And the soundtrack, even though it's just like six tracks only (?), is PERFECT!@@legoboy7107

    • @legoboy7107
      @legoboy7107 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@tronfreak6066 Well I mean, the Flowers in Yoshi's Island first of all are literally just reskinned Dragon Coins from Super Mario World (even having an unused Dragon Coin sprite internally) and the direct precursor to the Star Coins, they function identically to both those and the A Coins in the other Mario Advance games, and as for Red Coins they continue to appear in Mario games after Yoshi's Island using the exact same sound effect in the 2D games (yeah starting with Mario 64 they were reworked to only have 8 of them instead of 20, but they're clearly meant to be adapted from Yoshi's Island since every 2D game with them except NSMB2 uses the exact Yoshi's Island sound effect). The weird transformations are just a form of powerup and they don't appear much throughout the game, stuff like that has been in other Mario games too, and the pollen thing is just a level gimmick that sometimes appears, I personally don't see what's so bizarre about that, it could have been brought back in later Mario games if they wanted to. Not sure what you mean by the "flying mechanic" though.
      The egg mechanic is one major thing that's very unique though, yeah, however I will point out that like the flutter jump and ground pound (yes, the modern ground pound was introduced in Yoshi's Island) that's a mechanic that COULD have returned in later 2D Mario games as one of Yoshi's abilities no problem if they wanted it to (in fact it DID return in Super Mario 64 DS), looking at the game at the context it released in rather than what came afterward it's not an entirely out of left field thing. Especially since, based on what one of the head developers had said, one major issue with the development of Yoshi's Island as the next 2D Mario game was that he wasn't sure how they could evolve the series beyond Super Mario World, which he had thought basically perfected the game, and so a core struggle of Yoshi's Island was trying to think of how to make the game not just Super Mario World again, and that's part of the decision to switch to expanding so much on Yoshi who was of course the main new feature of Super Mario World, and the Egg Throwing was a part of that, trying to change it up to not just be Mario World again since he wasn't sure how to linearly evolve Super Mario World further on its own.
      And at the end of the day, the core gameplay is still 2D Mario and directly expands on so many of the things in ALL the previous console titles, even with all these weird new additions they're still integrated into what's at its core an evolution of the same Super Mario Bros. gameplay formula. And again, at the time when the later NSMB games didn't exist yet, these additions could have just been...new additions to the gameplay the same way the previous titles each introduced new stuff, it's only after the NSMB games that it could seem retroactively weird. I mean look at Mario Sunshine (I know that's a 3D game but still), that game has so many weird unique stuff in it you never see in other Mario titles really. And also, it's worth noting that part of why Yoshi's Island seems so weird is just because the NSMB series is responsible for bland-ifying 2D Mario, the whole thing with that series is that it was kind of a soft reboot that did a LOT of "back-to-basics-ing" and was basically just being Mario 3 and World...again, and not a whole lot more than that (I know the first NSMB game is more unique than the later ones but even then it's still not quite the same massive step in evolution as the previous classics each were, it's just a soft reboot revival), and then every 2D Mario game after that got defined by following that corpo-brand blandness for a while. But that's all stuff that only retroactively makes Yoshi's Island weird, but even then for each thing that seems weird I could list something from Yoshi's Island that has direct influence in the NSMB series, because other than Yoshi's Island being way more creative with its stuff, when I was playing it in several ways it did almost feel like a proto-NSMB game in the gameplay.
      To understand part of where I'm coming from with this, about a year or two ago I decided to do a 2D Mario marathon, where I started first with the arcade titles but then I played Super Mario Bros. 1, 2JP, 2 USA, 3, and World in a single series, and right after that went right into Yoshi's Island, and what surprised me is just in this context how much it really felt like a continuation and evolution of what I had just played, it felt like a culminating final Super Mario Bros. 5 in many ways before the "soft 3D reboot" that would completely change the series in Mario 64. There were so many things I found that was simply evolving the same formula from what came before, and since I had just played the previous games I could point them all out, it really was a culmination of all the previous games (I especially noticed a lot of Mario 3 DNA actually, more than Super Mario World had in many ways). It integrated stuff from all the previous games together, including even Mario 2 USA, up to that point Mario 2 of course feels like a bit of a black sheep from the others, but in Yoshi's Island Mario 2 is finally integrated smoothly alongside the other games' stuff and it retroactively helps Mario 2 fit in a bit more. Yeah, the game also had a lot of really unique Yoshi-centric stuff that you don't often see in Mario games, but the game itself still feels like a Mario 5 PLUS that new stuff, like put that stuff to the side for a sec and the game could very well fit the SMB5 bill in my opinion, especially with that final Bowser boss being like, the ultimate culminating final boss of the series, gosh dang. Like that one news thing I quoted said, it's both a Mario game AND a Yoshi game, it serves as both a Yoshi game kickstarting the new Yoshi series with the new Yoshi-esque unique stuff AND a Mario game that works as an SMB5 like it was supposed to be. At its core it has nearly everything to be Mario 5 while also flavoring it up with a bunch of unique new stuff with a focus on Yoshi that would be enough to justify a whole spinoff series, it's both. That's why I consider the original Yoshi's Island to be Mario 5, but do not consider Yoshi's Island DS or any other Yoshi games to be anything more than spinoffs, because that's all they are and go their own way, while the original serves both as a Mario game and a backdoor pilot for a Yoshi series (not to mention how polished as heck the original is, way more than the previous 2D Mario games before it, there's a TON of effort from the Mario team that's at mainline level for something that's supposedly just a mere spinoff). Which is all again also the opinion of Miyamoto and Tezuka, the heads who of course actually made all these 2D Mario games. Just dial down some of the weird new Yoshi stuff maaaybe, add ? Blocks back (which do have an unused sprite internally meaning they were planned), and some other little things and boom, undeniable mainline 2D Mario game right there, that doesn't fundamentally change the game much. But hey, this is my opinion at the end of the day, either way it's a great game regardless.

    I've been in love in Super Mario Bros. 3 since I had the All-star collection on SNES when I was a kid. SMW was the first game I ever beat, but I would play SMB3 like all the time. My mom sold the game at a garage sale in the late 90s and I remember literally crying when I found out. Found out about emulators a few years later lmao.

    Okay I’m sorry, maybe a hot take here, but Zelda 2 DOES NOT suck. It’s a good game. Sure it betrayed what made the ‘Zelda Formula’ so good, but on its own merits it’s still quality…change my mind.

      Not even going to try to change your mind, Zelda 2 is a fantastic game!

    what OG mario is a breeze i killed back in 94 when i was 10 at a friends house ( i never had an NES) warps are super legit, and lost levels is real shit. I personally think every mario is better then the other like mario wonder is now the best before it was new 3d world and so on.
    But dude the gameboy games are my nostalgic best, those games can be played over and over.
    Mario Wonder is absolutely amazing, true that.

    I'll never forget when I was a kid, one of my neighbors got ahold of my Mario World game and freaking deleted my 99% completed file. I was speechless. She just straight up erased it right in front of my face. She was like 2 years old but for some odd reason she pushed all of the correct buttons to erase my freaking file.

    Super Mario World is my favorite one on the SNES; I don't count SMW2 Yoshi's Island as a part of the series.
    Back in the good ole days, I found out about Super Mario Bros. 3 from the movie "The Wizard". Super Mario Bros. 3 was the best one of the NES.
    I beat Zelda 1 and 2 on the NES, however, Zelda 2 is a very tough and punishing game.
    Metroid is another one that I beat with no map, no internet, no help. It took a while but I managed to get it done.

    Holy sh*t I had the same experience with the first SMB. Played and played one night, could not beat it, then next day it was a breeze.
    I've had this theory ever since: SLEEP lets your brain process and absorb the practice you take in during the day before.
    I've seen it with musical instruments too: practice practice, you still suck, you SLEEP, next day you play it perfectly.
    Love it.

    Not playing Donkey Kong on the Gameboy, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island on the SNES, and Super Paper Mario on the Wii, means you still have a load of 2D Mario left to play. And the variation would have actually taken away the sameness from the challenge.
