- Suitsで英語を楽しく学んでしまいましょう！大人気海外ドラマスーツの９場面を一緒に観て、感じのいい「提案の仕方」を学びましょう。
今回は「could」のとても簡単で便利な使い方をリパートリーに入れちゃいましょう！
この「could」は「仮の話」を表す「仮定法」です。仮の話として提案しているので、押し付けがましくない、感じのいい提案の仕方ですね。
「仮定法」とは言っても、全然難しくなくて、「could」に動詞の原型を続けるだけなので、とても簡単です。
そして、表現をモノにするためには、例文をたくさん作ることが大事なので、「couldで提案」の例文をコメント欄に書いちゃいましょう！

英語の教科書では例文としてif～、XXXしかありませんが、実際の会話ではifなど使っていないですね。また実際の会話における用法は非常にわかりやすく、スッと頭の中に入ります。
SUITSは難しいなあ。音声としては認識できても内容がなかなか頭に入ってこない。なんか、子供の頃に大人の会話がよく理解出来なかったことを思い出します(笑)

といってもSUITSはかなりレベル高いですね！
日本人は、couldを『出来る』の過去形として、『〜できなかた』の意味でよく使ってしまいます。アメリカ人は、That does not work. とかあまりcouldを過去として使わないですよね。
仰る通り、過去に「できた」という意味ではほとんど「could」は使えないですね。
１回できた、という意味ではまず使わなくて、「昔はできていた」という意味なら「could」が使えます。
実はその説明も撮ったのですが、動画が長くなりすぎて、切ってしまいました（汗）

By the way, I have a question about the pronunciation I heard in the following sentence.
"...we could hit that little Mexican spot" ← Is the " h " sound of the word " hit " dropping as usual? I heard it like " coulditha "

Nick, thank you very much for so many nice CZcams videos with incredibly precious information!! I always appreciate your efforts for giving us so nice info!! This "could" CZcams is also unbelievably great one, and that gave me super good everyday English for proposing. The "would" one like "Why would I do it?" is also so great. BTW, there you gave us an example that says "Why do I do that?" and that made me laugh very much because I have learned the true meaning of the present tense of English on a book. I think most of Japanese don't know about it and I'm writing this because I want you to know about the part of the book. The book is a little old one and called ”心にとどく英語(岩波書店)" written by Mark Petersen. Around the page 14 of the book he gave us an example from the movie "The Graduate" . That was truly shocking for me. Looking forward to your next CZcams!!

@@nicwilliamson Actually he gave us two examples and the later shocked me out very much. The first example is really from a scene of the movie where Mrs. Robinson took Ben into her house. Then they reached to the home bar and she asked him saying “What do you drink? Bourbon?” Here the author explains that usual Japanese people would regard this as something like “What will you have?” or “What would you like, bourbon?”, but not. He says this is because the present tense is used to express “custom or habit” and then the question means “What do you always drink?”, and not a simple question. This was shocking enough for me, but the next example was by far shocking. Petersen gave us a funny example. Mrs. Robinson entered Ben’s bedroom and asked him saying “Is there an ashtray in here?” His answer was no. But here Petersen asked us if his answer was yes and he showed 20 different kinds of ashtrays and asked her saying “Sure, I use all these different kinds. What kind do you use?”, what we would think. Then he explained “Maybe you think the ashtray is for the cigarette, but actually it means ‘What do you always use?’ like the question ‘What do you drink?’” I hope you understand my English and if you do, I’m looking forward to your feedback. (If you correct this English and send it to me, slaorth@wonder.ocn.ne.jp, I’d be very happy.)

→この場合、カッコの中はどれを使っても良いんでしょうか？

I watch SUITS in amazon prime. There is a problem subtitle is not displayed. Should I use Netflix?
Yes, Amazon Prime not having English subtitles is a big problem for people who want to learn English.
Netflix is MUCH better, almost everything has English subtitles but not everything.
SUITS is weird, some seasons have English subtitles but not other seasons etc...
But I highly recommend signing up for Netflix if you want to study English^^

質問があります。例えばhow のhの脱落は訛りの一種からきているのでしょうか？というのも、サッカーのリバプールの選手の英語は、アメリカ人でもわからないことがあると言う話を聞いたことがあります。hを全く発音しないそうです。日本でも、江戸弁では、「ひ」が「し」になります。「ひがし」が「しがし」になります。訛りを含む発音も、この動画で取り上げられていらっしゃっていたら、スペイン訛りなども、取り上げられるのでしょうか？ 私がドイツ訛りの英語を初めて聴いたときは、私の英語のリスニング能力不足が大きいですが、ゆっくり発音してもらっても分かりませんでした。
冒頭もだけど、何年勉強してもドラマ、映画の英語は初見しっかり聞き取れないw
音が取れてないのも多いし、音的に聞けてても脳の処理がどうしても追いつかない
日本語と比べて英語の処理はどうしてもコンマ数秒処理が遅れる感
そのせいで高速のセンテンスが繋がると後半意味不明状態
toeicとか英検とかの資格テストレベルの速度ならかなり余裕なのに、、
そうですね、テストよりもずっと早いし難しいですね。
そして、SUITSが特に特に早口ですね（汗）

初心者でしたら、順番に「置き換え」「A＋B」「3STEP」にやった方がいいですね。「置き換え」で「品詞の意識」と「英語に沿って応用する」ことを覚えて、「A＋B」で「塊の表現」をたくさん覚えて、「3STEP」では「英語の思考回路」になることですね。それと別に「Q」や「A」もやったり、ある程度に慣れてきたら「音読」をやりましょう。Good luck!

ネイティブが使う「連結」「脱落音」など、いつも解説している現象を使っていて、スピードはネイティブ同士の会話より若干、少しだけ、遅めに読んでもらっています。若干、少しだけ遅いスピードで、まずは「連結」「脱落音」などの発音の現象に慣れて頂くためですね。初心者、中級者には丁度いい感じかなと思います^^
