Thanks Shawn. We still laugh when speakers of US English use the word 'backside' to mean 'behind', 'far side' or 'rear'. In English, the backside is the gluteus maximus. You sit upon it. 😉

Visited these two waterfalls on a “independent discovery trip” in 2018. We had no idea how that slot canyon at Gijufrabul waterfall was formed. The path from one waterfall to the other is beautiful with random smaller falls on the way, and a little creek produced by the falls. From there we spent several days in the Westman Islands. Amazing memories, enhanced by learning more about the creation of these wonders>. Thank you!!
Thank you, Shawn! It brings back such cool memories :) I didn't know (or I had forgotten...) that the cliff at Seljalandsfoss was an ancient sea cliff, where the coastline was a very long time ago... Yes! We also walked behind the waterfall, starting from the other side though, and got pretty wet too, it was fun... and slippery! ;) Didn't know there was another waterfall nearby, Gljúfrabúi, and it's a shame because it's really beautiful. Our guide was passionate about history and Icelandic sagas (which was awesome) but less about geology...
Thanks Shawn, both these waterfalls are at the flank of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano (meaning Island Glacier volcano) so that refers to times this once was the ocean coast. The Eyjafjallajökull volcano is 1666 meters high and erupted in 2010, cancelling many trans-atlantic flights.
No, it is named after the Westman islands
Nice they got the path done. It was under construction when I was there (May ‘23). I still was able to get behind it with a little climbing in and out on the right side. The waterfalls are amazing.
I’ve been there twice and next trip to Iceland I will go again. It’s always beautiful to watch. And I saw many others that dazzled me, like Dynjandi on the westfjords 🤩 the water rolls over those rocks in so many different ways!

Went here a few months back, it was too icy to go behind the falls unfortunately but seriously 10/10 experience and would definitely go back. Iceland is such a beautiful country and deserves to be protected but simultaneously viewed and visited. My whole trip there changed my perspective on the world completely if I’m honest!!
The day we went, it was cold. We were with an excursion trip to the Katla Ice Caves, and stopped at Seljalandsfoss on the return trip. It rained while we were on the glacier, and having just dried off from being soaking wet and cold, I really didn't feel like getting wet again. So, I didn't go Behind the Waterfall.

Great video. I visited them mid summer ‘21 and wondered why two waterfalls so close could be so different. Geology has the answer!
Great video!! There is a similar feature on Manitoulin Island in Ontario Canada where you can stand behind a waterfall but it's not as high.

I saw Seljalandfoss on our trip in 2013, sadly, I couldn't walk behind the falls, I had hurt my leg the day before jumping out of a Super Jeep at Langjokull Glacier the day before, I was so bummed out, I also couldn't do the Glacier Walk on Solheimajokull.
I highly recommend visiting Iceland if you ever get the chance, it's just magical!

Brilliant waterfalls, I didn’t dare make the walk behind as I’m not steady enough on my feet! I also didn’t go into that space at the second waterfall, sad really as it’s beautiful 😊

I didn’t realize that the land built up and the coastline has moved further away! Cool informative video, Shawn! We did not see Gljufrabui but loved walking behind Seljalandsfoss during out first visit to Iceland. I’m curious, it looked like you started walking from the left side (as you face the waterfall from the front) behind the falls and came out the right side. Did you see people walking in both directions? We started from the other direction and I seem to recall it happening to be pretty 1-way traffic. The path felt a little narrow and the climb up the rocky path at the left side was a little scramble for a short person like me! Such a cool experience though to see it from behind. We discovered your channel during the volcanic eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula late last year and you are our go-to guy for coverage of the volcanic activity! Thanks for your informative and calm factual presentations!

I have one question concerning the second waterfall, or lets say, concerning the principle of a waterfall cutting through soft sediments and thus wandering upstream. Are these cuts usually straight or do we also observe some form of meandering?
Camped by the 2nd waterfall and remember the ground being hollow.
Could the cliff dwellers sue when their beachfront property was encroached upon?

You should contact Just Icelandic. He has some excellent footage from his drones including thermal imaging from before the recent eruption. I believe he is a videographer who travels all of his home country.

Prof. Willsey, this has nothing to do with your current video but I wanted to ask your opinion on Italy's Campi Flegrei. I came across another Channel that make it sound very very concerning to the point of panic in my opinion 😟. I was wondering if you'd be able to cover this situation. Love ALLL your videos 💜Take care.
I could be wrong but personally I don't think it will do anything. The rumbling is normal, as Yellowstone rumbles. Its how it lets off pressure.
When I had first started watching another very popular channel a few years ago on Yellowstone those videos used to scare me very bad too. But as time passed I realized that nothing was actually happening. And that it was normal... I actually had to stop watching that channel for a good length of time as it was scaring me too much. It was keeping me up at night. So yes sometimes these channel can scare you.
But also realize that scary titles get more views.
Now those videos don't scare me anymore. I guess I have educated myself about them. About volcanoes I mean.
If they are causing you fear + panic I suggest you step away from that channel. And yes her dogs are cute and the horses too. And I don't think she is trying to scare people on purpose but I think some people are just not "ready" for that type of video.
But I really don't think it will do anything. Except rumble. Or make little earthquake. Yellowstone does the same thing.
I suggest you watch positive uplifting videos. Some say what you focus on comes into your life. So then do not focus on Campi. Focus on nice channels. It may be hard but I suggest you step away from her channel for awhile. Let time pass. That worked for me.
If it makes you feel any better, Dutchsinse said he would buy land at Campi if someone was willing to sell to him. You probably know he forecasts earthquakes.
But what you put out into the universe is what you get. Your thoughts. That is metaphysics. So if you want Campi to do nothing than do not focus on it. Ignore it.

@@sarahb.6475 Thank you for your lovely response 😸 Personality I can see through the hype and clickbait. What concerns me is that 99% of her comments are people who actually are now in fear! Some even cancelling their vacations to Italy. I don't think it's right that she is playing on ppls fears and anxieties. I to went through that growth process of feeding into The Domesday Channel's and realized " hey I'm still here, nothing happened " lol. My hope is for Prof. Shawn Willsey to maybe address this on a video of its own.

So is the coast below the waterfall formed from aggraded material? I wonder if there is a raised platform/beach formed by Holocene post glacial isostatic rebound of the land? (That’s me applying Scottish geomorphology to Iceland 😜)
