That animation for the future 50 million years or so did not include the formation of a new, fairly large island near East Africa. As far as I know, East Africa is rifting and eventually will move to the east, carrying Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and parts of a few other countries with it.

I first learned about Wegener and continental drift in high school in Germany, which got me quite interested in geology in general. That was some 45 years ago, and life and other interests took over. Then I started following you for the Iceland updates. Have watched all of your videos since, plus many from other channels, and I love geology more than ever. Thank you!

That mantle diagram is seems peculiar to me as it was my understanding that the asthenosphere is the layer of the upper mantle below the crust where the mantle undergoes substantial plastic deformation and thus is a layer of the upper mantle above the more conventionally solid and the divide between the upper and lower mantle is separated by the Mantle Transition Zone(MTZ) which is more or less the current depth at which primary mantle hydration and certain kinds of structural recrystallization occur within sinking and stagnant subducted slabs which have yet to have recrystallized into denser rocks to a sufficient degree to drive them deeper into the planet. Has the asthenosphere and upper mantle been redefined more recently? Or was this an error?

Awesome video and drone footage thank you. Shawn a question. With the land rise in fact dropping instead of increasing. could that mean that the main feeds to that reservoir has been blocked and or restricted to the point the outflow is exceeding the inflow? If so does or could that indicate that the source way down deep will try and find a new path upwards, I guess the indication of that would be earthquakes..... Thank you to you and all the mods for everything they do keep safe and well :)

Hi Shawn Willsey, great job as always, particularly like that it is so natural flowing from you with ease. Shawn, enjoy your educational and update videos on Geology, keep it up. Some years ago, I listened to a podcast on the 5 "big bangs" of science, in particular Physics. This podcast discussed the big breakthroughs in thinking within the field which has shaped our understanding as of today. From memory this was ideas of Newton, Einstein, Quantum Theory, Standard Model etc. I have often wondered, what would be the 5 "big bangs" of understanding geology?. Clearly Plate tectonic theory would be one of them. Therfefore I am wondering if you have any views about what the other breakthroughs in our understanding of geology, vulcanism and earth sciences are and if you could put together a video explaining what these might be? Regards, Another Midnight Oil fan from Australia.
