Colourful Leaf Cane in Polymer Clay, Tutorial

- This Colourful Leaf Cane can also have a slight colour change down the length of the cane, which opens up all sorts of possibilities for your polymer clay designs. I wouldn't say this was my easiest cane, but it is actually easier than it looks, and I break it down into manageable steps for you.
Typically, just as I was finishing editing the video, I thought of a better way to get a complete colour change, from one end of the cane to another, but it would need to be with a differently designed leaf/petal - so I will get onto that one for you soon.
But for now, just sit back and relax as you watch the process unfold, then have a go at making one of these leaf canes for yourself.

For those rolling the clay by hand - setting 9 on my machine is 1 card thick, setting 3 is 5 cards, setting 2 is 6 cards and setting 1 is 7 cards thick.

I can’t believe how intricate people are when making canes. I’ve only tried a couple of times, and was not successful. I know it’s like anything in life, practice makes perfect. It is mine blowing some of the things artist can create. These are absolutely beautiful.

I absolutely LOVE this cane! The colors you used are beautiful, but your design allows for so many color possibilities. I want make one first with your colors because they look so fantastic together. At first I saw the quick leaf sliced turned into earrings. I thought I'd have to really study it or buy the tutorial (which I can rarely afford to) then to my delight, I found your free tutorial! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for ALL of the free tutorials that you do. I love demos and tutorials but can't afford the clubs, groups etc. I'm just a fan of PC and I love all of the techniques. Many of us struggle for the clay at one point or another the generous artists that make free videos are truly what I believe is the backbone of beginning until we reach a point or place to sell. Hopefully at a profit. I love giving small pieces to people outside the community if they show interest. I've given the earrings out of my ears, wipe the finding with alcohol prep pad ( I always have a few on hand) and just smile say “thank for enjoying them, they are PC baked at home etc. People are so astonished. It's fun to give. But without the kindness of others to share for free their time, effort and knowledge, it would take many of us trying to reinvent the wheel. Maybe someday I'll find my own wheel, but only because I'm standing on the shoulders of great artists. So thank you!😘😘

This is fabulous! I love the fantasy colours. It did take me two tries to watch this, as my first go was interrupted by my son phoning me to tell me he made the Dean's list for excellence! As reasons for interruptions go, I kind of like this one!
Someone else mentioned this as a possibility for a fairy house or fairy door...and I agree. That would be a fun use!

Thanks so much Susan, do you know I thought I had - I had to go back and watch it to see that I hadn't ! I think it's because I had posted on social media at the same time a pair of earrings made from the cane slices, so i probably thought most people would see those. The canes have been sliced through in the final shots, to give a nice view of the tops of the canes, and the colour doesn't change much across a couple of millimetres, so they look very similar on each side of the slice. I hope that helps a little, and thanks for pointing it out 😉🙃

These are lovely leaf canes. They look so complex but you make rather easy to follow just by breaking everything down. I sure do like the purple one - it's super pretty.💜

I thoroughly enjoyed this tutorial. Thank you for your time and talent- sharing both with us. If I may, I have a question about another topic, and am relatively new to working polymer clay. I have made a few necklaces but every one of them seems to want to flip over. Is there a secret to keeping them 'right side up?" I thank you in advance for any help you can give

There are so many ways I could answer that but would need to see the design of the necklace first, It is normally to do with the placement and size of the bail on the back, or how it is made into a necklace - check out photos on social media and see the backs of necklaces ;) That may help :)

So beautiful! Your tutorials are amazing! When you make your skinner blends, your long strips never look sticky! Is that because of the clay you use? Mine are always so sticky I can barely work with them! Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
Yes it is because it is FIMO Soft. When I am using Premo, or Cernit for instance, and I have a long blend, I will pull it out (un concertina it) every few turns from the bottom, while still holding onto the bit that hasn't yet gone through the pasta machine, (unless you can lay that part carefully down to give you use of both hands) pulling the concertina bit flat across my work surface. Continue doing that every few turns until it has all gone through. You need to make sure you have a clean workspce/space to do it before you start, but that should solve your problem 😉🙃🙂

When reducing and the underneath colors start poking out at the end, I’ve found myself pushing, mushing, perhaps squidging a bit of the outside clay farther over the end. Then I’ve pushed the ends in. I only see you keeping the ends firmly in occasionally. So, it’s a choice and I’m not distorting the final cane too much, right?
yes what you are doing is fine, we all find a technique that works well for us :) I never mind the distorted ends, as I am always in need of loads of scrap clay ;)
