IMHO, make sure you have a signed agreement from the host agency, specifying everything in writing, especially about monthly expenses a self employed travel agent is expected to pay, commission structures, taxation on self employed income, and earned employment benefits as a self-employed travel agent, BEFORE YOU AGREE to associate yourself with a particular host agency, and sign a outside agent contract or any similar type of legal self employment agreement. If you are uncertain, consult an lawyer, attorney, solicitor or other legal professional, before signing, photocopying it and returning the original to the host agency. Secondly, know the employment standards and taxation laws and regulations of the state or province where the host agency is located. Thirdly, understand that if you join a host agency as an outside travel agent, be prepared to have to wait a specific period of time and earn a specific level of income before qualifying for travel/vacation benefits. If the host agency offers to SELL you a travel agent "Identification" card that 'qualifies' you for free or reduced rate travel without meeting the minimum requirements to use those cards legitimately, RUN, don't walk away from that host agency. "Membership fees" for a Host Agency that you have to pay upfront for to work as a travel agent are also scams; Host Agencies that are nothing more that ID Card mills are unscrupulous fraudsters. The only Travel Agent ID Cards that are any good are those from ASTA or IATAN (in the USA) or IATA or ACTA (in Canada) or from a national travel agent organization affiliated with UFTAA (Universal Federation of Travel Agent Associations). Nuff Said.

Thank you for your comment Craig! As far as credentials go, you do not need your own IATAN card or CLIA EMBARC credentials to book travel. KHM Travel will provide you with our credentials so you can book with suppliers.
Because KHM Travel Group is an IATA and CLIA-appointed agency, it allows our travel agents to work towards earning their own IATAN and CLIA cards. These cards are mainly for personal travel agent discounts, and you do not need them to operate as an independent contractor with KHM Travel Group. You can get these cards if you meet the requirements set by IATA and CLIA.
We completely agree, it is crucial that travel agents be in compliance with the state laws where they operate their business.

@@KHMTravelGroup I agree with your reply. IATAN cards are only required when booking personal travel benefits. As long as an outside agent has an agreement with a host agency, he or she can represent themselves as an outside agent, who is affiliated with that host agent, and authorized to book travel products in a manner as is they were actually working in the host agency's physical location. That outside agent's home office would be treated like a branch or associate office of the host agency.
