MID ENGINE AMC Rebel - Will it RUN AND DRIVE 800 miles home? (ex DemolitionRanch)

- I flew to Florida to pick up a non-running 1969 AMC Rebel. It's rare it's in own right - but this one is a one of a kind because MID ENGINE! That's right - engine is in the FRONT SEAT! Think I can get it running and drive 800 miles back home?

I think the quick simple fix is remove the hood and put the driver's seat in the engine compartment.
LOL, best comment yet!
And swap the axles. Then it will TRULY be a one of one. Name one other AMC car that drives forward, in reverse.
Forward control like the pink panther car
lmfao
Haha... Exactly, too funny!
Definitely the worst idea ever. But im glad you did it. So many hours have been put into this car. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
My top CZcamsrs right here. I'll go to sleep happy. #nohomo
No matter how bad it might be there's always blood, sweat and tears behind a project like this. That makes up for it
I thought that was your old car Matt
And more blood, sweat and tears must be spilled to restore her to her original state of dignity, because such a rare vehicle deserves not to be mutilated.
By the way, i know you like to shoot everything, so thanks for not shooting her. 😊
The one car that should of gone the way of goldie, matt!
One thing I really like about Derek, no matter how bad things get, it’s…fine.
"It's fine"...
I recently discovered this channel a few weeks ago and quickly realized Derek is not only a great mechanic with resourceful and logical thinking, but has a real ability to create his humour in a completely dead pan way that had the wife and myself laughing so hard and for so long we had to replay part of the episode after pausing to catch our breath and to wipe our eyes! He is one of these folks that takes difficult problems and makes it look easy as he fixes and repairs what others have abandoned. Then drives it home! I’m glad he relented during this drive as it was pretty obvious it was getting unhealthful. But funny? Oh yeah! Thank you!
He's a riot!
Brave man😂 love your content
No matter how bad things get, it’s….fine.
agree
Derek. I can’t tell you how relieved when you decided your health was much more important than making a video. No matter what you do, we we all want you to be safe. My hat is off to you for making the right (smart) decision. Way to go!!
Damn right. Hats off to him for giving her a go, but holy hell a feller shaved off quite a few years pulling this little stunt
He should take this thing apart and put the engine back where it belongs
Couldn't he build a dog house all the way to the firewall like a van has to help keep the fumes and heat out of the car but I'm glad that he chose his health over anything else
@@archieyoungjr3695 its not only that. This whole car is a danger.
I'm not a doctor or even an emt, but I think carbon monoxide can be accumulated in the body over time, so maybe it's a better idea to take a break and trailer it the rest of the way home.
Sketch level in this rig is astounding lol. Driving this thing 500+ miles must have given you the lungs of a smoker of 30 years. Always great entertainment Derek.
I thought the same. Dereck, you are going to die early from doing this. It wont be pleasant. Seriously, you already work amongst all the poisonous fumes and I think you just doubled the damage you may have done already just by driving this car. Dont mean to be so serious and a downer, but damn.. it's for real. I like the car, body style and what not, but it would need the motor put back where it belongs, not in your lap. Would be a great project with multiple videos to make it a street rod. Take good care.
Oh jesus, you make it sound like he's going to drop dead in a week. Lol. It ain't good for you, no doubt, but he'll be okay! 😉
It's a medical proven fact that even a long time cigarette smoker, after the last cigarette smoked, the body starts repairing the damage to the lungs. So with that being said Dereck doesn't drive these types of mechanical altered vehicles every day. YES HE WILL BE OK.
This episode will never be forgotten 😂
I was overcome by carbon monoxide fumes from a car in the late seventies and still feel effects to this day from that happening. Carbon monoxide is not something that gets out of your blood too easily and being around it from car exhaust just makes it come right back once you had the experience of too much build up in your bloodstream.
Snorcel! As in scuba diving gear, or in this case scuba driving gear 😉 that should have helped in this particular case.
My mom watched you all the time she passed away from cancer so I started watching your channel now I see why she loved your channel 😅😅😅😅😅😂😂😂❤❤❤ thank you for putting a smile on my moms face ❤❤
So sorry about your mom its hard but gets better with time God bless 🙏
Love you ❤
I seriously don’t think I’ve ever laughed more watching a CZcams video in my life. I am SO glad I found VVG…Derek is like the Bob Ross of backwoods mechanics (although he’s actually a friggin wizard-savant). It’s brilliant 🔥
The driver’s comfort certainly takes the back seat here 😂
Underrated comment 🤣
I seen what you did
i get it
That car's mid engine mod is a perfect example of the old adage of, just because you can doesn't mean you should. Still, I love watching your vids. Keep up the great work!
I was thinking the same thing.
I can't believe you posted this...I was going to say the same EXACT thing
Or the adage if you want something done right do it yourself everything wrong with car is fixable
Same could be said about getting in it and driving it 800 miles.
I feel like the term firewall was a complete mystery to who ever built this thing.
This whole mod is firmly in "your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should" territory.
Professor Bubba who concieved & executed this motoring fetish abortion in his moonshine soaked dome had a dream.
W.T.F.!!!!!
Yes, except no scientists were involved.
Yeah they should’ve set the 15 sack of Busch down and rethought what they were doing to this poor car, these are actually nice rides 😂 this one was I suppose
A year later; I'm sifting through your backlog and see you talk to the gas jug "ON" and I get a hearty laugh over my lunch break. You ain't kiddin' with those darn nozzles.
Nothing like a bad idea badly executed. Don't think I would've been brave/crazy enough to drive it 50 feet. Still can't wait to see part 2!
Let's hope it's not a funeral.
When I saw 'mid engine' in the title, I thought "oh okay, behind the front wheels then.." - nope... right there in the cabin, drinker's side.

I'm 2 years late watching this but it's the best episode yet. An insane car, golden humour and real perseverance to get that far! Thanks Derek, I'm not sure if you really know just how entertaining you are, but there's an English fella in Australia that's loving every minute of it!!
Thank you for saving Christmas, British TV was awful, but found this channel and watched endless hours. Love the presentation and the problem solving.
This dude literally makes the best automotive videos in the world. There's never a vid that is bad. Love it.
Ditto!
Got that right
Man, Derek seems like the kind of dude that I'd definitely stand around in the garage and enjoy a couple cold snacks for sure. I'm in the same situation as him where he got tired of living in a deep freezer. A fella has to admit, living where your face and hands constantly hurts gets old real quick when the year on your ID says 1974 lol. I'm actually eyeballing Tennessee myself. I wouldn't mind running into him lol
I live in Kentucky here, pretty close to the Tennessee line, I've got 12 acres and 2 houses for sale. Holler at me if your interested.

That is a RIDICULOUS motor configuration!
About halfway thru, I was thinking a feller might go into Wallyworld and buy a hula hoop, a space blanket, and two rolls o'duct tape. Section that hoop into three even lengths and create a tent over the engine. Cover the whole thing with the spaceman blanket, and tape it down with BOTH rolls. Instant Econoline doghouse.
That being said I'm so glad you pulled the plug on this ride, Derek. We like our content provider continuing to enjoy cold snacks, working with the little humans, and sharing Jessica with us live occasionally. Key word LIVE
There’s no way anyone can get mad with him for not driving her all the way. Been watching since the third episode and this a real genuine fella. Wouldn’t want to see you get hurt in this thing. Good decision!
Sometimes a guys just gotta pull back on the reins and shuttr down
Yeah smart you live to play another day.
AMC did have some innovation.
The Rebel was a beast.
Screaming “ON!” to the gas can was hilarious
I ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT GET ENOUGH OF THIS GUY!!!! This is without a doubt the best channel on CZcams. I’m sooooooo hooked
Just figured out by pure chance he has a show on motortrend too
Yeah iknow right. A guy should have way more subs tho
This is my first time watching this channel. There is nothing on the television set that will ever entertain me as much as this. I'll definitely be binge watching!
You're absolutely correct. There's nuthin' on television that isn't either leftist brainwashing or that doesn't kill brain cells. This kind of stuff is much more healthy for the grey matter indeed.
Oh you've come to the right place

"Feller wanted himself a midengine AMC. After he made it it he thought, nope, that was a huge mistake"
I was so worried that the water pump might fail and pop a scalding hot hose in your face that I was actually relieved when you decided to stop driving it. Glad you are safe!
That would have been brutal 😳
The conduit steering shaft was enough to know its trailer time. The original builders fabricating skills are scary in so many ways. Good luck with this one. 🤣😂🤣
You are a inspiration to me and many others! I use to do what you are doing in the 70's and early 80's THANK YOU 🙏! Even if I don't finish my NOVA you shared inspiration!
I think you 'pulled the plug' at a good point. No need to breathe any more oil for our amusement. You are a TROOPER ! The only thing I thought of was put a series of radiator hoses off the oil filler to direct the blow by behind you. It's a fun car for nostalgia, I own a '67 Marlin , which is a very rare fish. AMC is definitely an eclectic taste in cars. I love all old cars and like alot of us, get to live vicariously thru You, Brother. Keep on Truckin'!
And Car'in' lol. Now got take a bath in 'Dawn' dish soap !!

As an old school amc lover, a guy who has owned over 30 amc cars of all different types and over 40 kaiser/amc jeeps. This ol rebel kinda breaks a guys heart. Too damn rare of a car to do that kinda hackery too. What a shame.

Really Derek saved it.. not butcher it
OMG! I feel so beat up! And I was not the crazy One who attempted the impossible! Much credit for you effort and persistence. I’m so glad you survived. I’ve decided I need to support your venture now cuz with acts like this one you may need for healthcare. Just hoping that never is the case. I have been watching most of your vids and now my wife is finally laughing at your comments. I was thinking of inviting friends over playing one of your videos and setting rules to everyone drinks when a numerous comment is heard but then thought we would be drunk in 10 minutes. I have to rethink the rules. Keep up the great work you do and thank you for the may hours of entertainment you give so many.
Time-lapse with the clouds at sunset was beautiful and fantastic
this would be such a cool car with the motor in the right place! love the body lines and look
Yup, think so too!
Exactly. It's ruined. And dangerous!
That much co2 is no joke. Glad you decided to find an alternative way to get that rig home. Even if you left it and took a bus home I guarantee we all will still love the video.
It definitely bothers me everytime he starts talking about CO in the cabin. I learned the hard way that it can be very serious. Nearly cost me my life. Thing everyone should know is CO will actually adhere to the blood and prevent it from oxygenating. Even though the levels in the cabin may not have reached incredibly dangerous levels the accumulative effect of being in it for so long can be very harmful.
co2 LOL. You mean Co? Carbon dioxide (Co2) Is dangerous as well as it replaces oxygen, but carbon monoxide (Co) Is much more dangerous.

My thoughts, too. Put the engine and trans back where they're supposed to be. Then custom fab a floor pan and trans hump cover at least in the original area. This was one of the most fascinating videos you've done yet, Anyone that's done a similar trip in a sketchy rig can relate. I drove a $500.00 Ford F100 from Napa California home to Southern Vermont...through a blizzard on Donner Pass with summer tires..(got turned around by the chain Police)...the whole trip took me 5 days. The F100 was in slightly better shape than the Rebel. You made the right decision to put a stop to the lung torture. I can't wait for part II...This is hands down the best channel on CZcams!
Hey Derek that rig is a true deathtrap, man!
Unsafe at any speed
I was so relieved when you decided to throw in the towel on driving that beast home. Thank you for doing the actual right thing and taking care of your health.
Laughed at your predicament. You are legend.
I like how Derek is low-key, funny; he doesn’t make you piss your pants or have a stroke laughing it’s just mildly humorous and a lot of it. It makes you wonder where he gets this stuff? Does he have some relatives from Minnesota or something? I’ve seen him get very serious and drop all the joking around when it comes to building motors. When it’s important.
I was so glad to see you stop and have her hauled the rest of the way home. Your health and wellbeing are much more important than driving her all the way. Now I can't wait to see what you do with her, I really like that car as it was before someone screwed her up.
SPOILER WARNING DUDE!
Driving that car is the sort of thing that might put a kink in your 'staying alive' plans.
