Anybody else think that Euron molested Then too? The way he reacted when Crowfood Umber found him and Jeyne Poole, he wanted to rip off Crowfood's eye patch to make sure he had a regular eye under it. He kinda freaked out.
This is by FAR the best analysis of, who I believe is, the best character in the whole ASOIAF saga.
Well done guys! đđ»đđ»
I think the molestation is essential because it represents how euron believes he made aeron what he is as a religious leader by teaching him how to pray as he sees it. It also shows how immoral his behavior has been since a young age. And it shows how much molestation can be driven by a sick need for power over other more vulnerable people, which is a power dynamic that seems to define Euron's goal as a character. It does lead one to wonder what happened to make him the way he is given that GRRM doesn't seem to be the type of author to make someone just born to be evil.
The neglect idea seems likely. For all these horrible things to have been happening in these character's childhoods, it seems like neglect must have been a factor.
In cases we know of BR visiting (jojen and Bran) the kids had suffered near death experiences. Maybe something like that happened to Euron too. Maybe he was also abused or hurt by someone else when very young.
I think it is the Varamyr case, born antisocial and raised in the worst way ever to compensate the lack of empathy to something less destructive. He can't feel happy through human conection, but experiencing power over others elevates his ego. Mostly grrm gives reasons why people do horrible things, but that does not mean beeing born with a disposition for evil is of the table. Ramsey is the same and than we have Bran with his own antisocial tendencies but a compleatly different upbringing that makes him not compleatly horrible
This is really well put Joe smart stuff
Gregor Clegane, evil. Migraines provide a minor prod of motivation, but his character was made as a horrific example of brute evil for crueltyâs sake đ€·ââïž
I don't think Bloodraven tried to recruit Euron and it was a failure that broke Euron. I think he started looking at Euron, showed him a few dreams, saw how deeply screwed up he was and said "yeah...nope, next prodigy". I don't think there's supposed to be a "why" to Euron, I don't see him ever getting a tragic backstory that explains why he is the way he is. Getting one feels outside of the point of the character. He's such a scary dude even Bloodraven wanted no part of him when he was a kid.
It wasnt Bloodraven at all. Remember when Bran meets Bloodraven in the cave and asks him about being the 3 eyed crow? Bloodraven's response: "Crow?" He had no idea what Bran was talking about because it wasnt him. Something else caused Bran and Euron's flying dreams. I think it was Leyton Hightower with a glass candle.
@@williamhermann6635 He doesn't know the exact form he appears in while appearing in someone else's dream.
@@Snakie747 So the guy can literally warg other creatures and see events from 10,000 years ago (godlike abilities) but doesnt know what he looks like while entering those dreams? That doesnt add up to me.
@@williamhermann6635 There's no indication he can read minds. I've always considered the idea that Blood Raven isn't the Three Eyed Crow to be a bit tin-foil for my taste.
@@Snakie747 "all crows are liars." -Old Nan
Always believe Old Nan.
I dont think Bloodraven is a liar. Bloodraven is associated with ravens anyways, not crows.
The two of you should write fanfictions, your describtion of how Euron might have been overlooked as a problemchild is just way to funny to be wasted ^^
Catching up with the Greyjoyâs is a fanfic id read
Euron talks so much about "who is going to stop me" and just keeps pushing and pushing, I really want him to bite off more than he can chew. Maybe he succeeds in the eldrich apocalypse but not in a way that benefits him. He gets a look beyond the door and it /ruins him/, utterly and completely. And we see it from another character's pov and you see a mad man like Euron being destroyed and shaken to his core and you are left to imagine what horror could possibly be responsible. What could be beyond the door, but never explicitly see it. It would hint at gods and an underlying invisible structure but never specifying how it works. Like a game where Euron broke the only and ultimae rule by gazing at the real players and they punished him for it. In a way the gods would be similar to George. Put powers and forces and characters into the world and see which path they take, throwing tempations and influences here and there and seeing what happens. Observing the nature of people and the battle within themselves. How much does a person need to be pushed to give into their dark side? How much can they resist? I don't expect George to outright say this so much as merely hint at it. But the world of asoiaf always had a feeling of opposing players for me and the world and everyone in it is caught in between, like a game of chess.
I think Euron is going to get consumed by Chthulu, thatll be his end. George is a big Lovecraft fan, and the whole idea of Lovecraft gods is that they are beyond mortal understanding or apprehension. Euron is going to bite off more than he can chew in the end.
To be entirely honest, I want Bran at full Weirwood power to completely steamroll Euron in a battle on the astral plane. As powerful as Euron is, I think without Weirwood enhancement, Bran will entirely eclipse him.
It doesn't make much narrative sense to me for Euron to destroy himself. That's a very anticlimactic way to go out. Considering the only people we know who have exceptional magic power or knowledge are Euron, Bran, Maester Marwyn, Moqorro, Quaithe, Melisandre, and Bloodraven, I don't see anyone being a match for Euron except Bran, who happens to be a main character. I don't know how the conflict would go down, but I think Bran vs Euron would make a good conflict.
Great stream , really enjoyable all the way through. Euron is quite the well written evil baddie from GRRM. I do think the genesis that got the ball rolling does stem from Bloodraven likely visiting Euronâs mind in his youth and seemingly showing him some great mysteries via visions. Of course it seems Bloodraven rejected young Euron , surely seeing the evil maniac in the making he was ; but that experience likely had Euron interpret that he was operating on a different higher level than everyone else , destined to be a god and could do anything he wanted. The Crows on his personal sigil and talks of jumping off high towers are textual evidence that this whole Bloodraven process was most likely true with EG. The Bloodraven situation coupled with EG committing heinous atrocity after heinous atrocity without any sort of reckoning or consequences just emboldened him even further to get where we are in the current narrative with Euron.
And speaking of atrocities this imminent massive blood sacrifice from Euron has me very curious what will result from doing so ; literally every type of blood sacrifice imaginable , filicide of his unborn child (which can also be construed as kingâs blood assuming that concept holds any weight) kin-slaying (his brother and child), all sorts of different magical and religious representatives who will be sacrificed as well , on top of the blood spilled with any naval battle if this is all done simultaneously. This should be very interesting , diabolical but definitely has piqued myself and many othersâ curiosity to see the results of this whole action. For me whether it is in this malicious act or a subsequent one , I just have a feeling a massive backfire is on the cards for Euron or at least not playing out the way he thinks. If he does facilitate an opening for the Others or summons some other evil force that he intends to lead i think whichever entity that is will likely kill him or cast him aside and leave Euron in a damaged defeated state.
He should be far more popular and well known, PoorQuentyn(Emmett[sp?]).
Excellent insights from both of you.
He's getting there! Can find him on the NotACast podcast and @poorquentyn on twitter. Highly recommend following both.

Also, thank you for being so personally interactive.
i like the idea that eurons arc is sort of a smoking gun for the reader to finally accept fully that bloodraven is fundamentally a villian
This has been one of the best ASoIaF conversations I've ever listened to. You may say your focus and forte is the magic, but your interpretation of modern geo-political events and history is exceptional. This couple of hours has been intellectually interesting and prompt for another re-read. Thanks.
This reminds me so so much of "The Bifrost Incedent" from "the Mechanisms"
This was the best chemistry so far. Great episode.
Suddenly, Euron's backstory is the same as the bad guy from Shazam!
The twist no one saw coming
Wow, what a great cast!
All thanks to my esteemed guest and his absolute love of Euron.

Love you guys, thanks for the great stream!
Didnât expect a Do the Right Thing reference...but I love it...great video guys!!!

Nothing to be sorry for, luckily there's a large backlog to go through
Actualy it is a welsh girlsname meaning gold. . . I will never understand that choice of grrm, but your interpretation fits the character way better
Is there any way to hear GRRMâs recording of The Forsaken? Iâve always wanted to.
Sadly no, you have to read transcripts from people in the audience. I've heard it was deeply scary and amazing.
How he turned out like this . . . Similar to Varamyr, born antisocial/without empathy and raised under the worst possible conditions to teach him better. . . .
Euron wasnât antisocial. Heâs charismatic and has political wisdom. The only antisocial part was his exile and that wasnât his call. Much different from the basic instincts and such of Varamyr
@@shinobifirecracker6671 you are aware that antisocial ist a spectrum, remember psychopath and sociopath? One is uncareing but good at manipulation and fakeing it, the others is impulsiv. What caused both conditions to be merged into antisocial ist that in both case the main problem is a compleat lack of empathy and hell If that is not the case for Euron, everyone is just a tool for him with no exeption and He gleefuly hurt and usw thema . . . He is inteligent, not wide, big difference and sadly intelligence is not rare in antisocial people. Look up cults and how their leaders get people to masssuicide, thats what Euron is.
No one who trips of every drug he gets deserves the description wide in my book.
@@shinobifirecracker6671 yeah, killing your helpless brother is not at all antisocial, compleatly healthy, great empathy there . . .or rapeing your younger Brothers, compleatly normal behaviour. If could call only one asoiaf chara antisocial, I would choose Euron and his godcomplex

If Shade ote comes from corrupted Weirwood and Bran is able to travel back in time when using the Weirwood net could Euron travel back in time to valyria etc instead of going to current destroyed Valyria?
Maybe but he wouldn't be able to physically bring anything back from there whatsoever as the only thing that can be done by "time travelers" in planetos is to potentially have the person hear you through the wind.
@@gholamdapantaloonsniffer8218 but you could go back and have someone take something and bury it for you elsewhere. "Bury that armor at x location." Said the wind.
An idea how Euron dies: The idea of Euron-urine you mentioned is sound ! I did not think about it too hard, but someone in the books says something like: "if you piss on wildfire it will burn you..." so i am thinking it might be wildfire - it would also fit with the idea from Tolkein that evil destroys itself. Perhaps it's not 100% Euron being clumsy ... also because it's George's story if he does make it funny a way to make us not laugh in that scene would be for him to take out someone we care about (that was just about to kill him) in his wildfire pissing accident.
In terms of the Horn of Winter which was mentioned , I agree with you Matt I do not think it is connected with taking down the Wall , as you and IDG (and likely others as well) have mentioned it does seem more associated with the rising of the Stark Dead , âwoke giants from the earthâ. And going back to the booksâ Nightâs King even with some murkiness with veracity and timing of ancient events in the ASoIaF universe , the Night's King residing at the Nightfort (a castle on the Wall) controlling the Nightâs Watch at the time both suggest this whole situation being in a post Wall era. We are told the horn was used (by Joramun) and it does not appear the Wall was taken down or damaged in anyway , ntm how would taking down the Wall help Brandon the Breaker or Joramun in that conflict anyway if that is the horn's purpose. Personally i think it is a bit of a misconception , of course anything can happen and who knows for sure but I do not see the HoW taking down or damaging the Wall , it seems much more connected to the Crypts of Winterfell / Stark dead rising.
Iv thought similar to you for a while regarding the blowing of horn (wakes the sleepes) and giants firm earth, but the only problem I have with it is when it was blown all those thousands of years ago by joruman would they of been many dead kings of winter in the crypts ??
Gavo Morg that part is not totally clear , timelines / timing from GRRM with Planetos is a bit of a mess , blurry and hard to follow , especially the events of ancient myth and legend , all of this admitted by GRRM himself. And going by the Age of Heroes prequel series that was in the works (now canceled) it seemed after discussing with GRRM the Long Night may have occurred 2 or 3 millennia later than previously assumed by most of the fandom. So conceivably House Stark could have been founded 8 or 9 thousand years before the current narrative and the first Long Night could have occurred anywhere from 2 to 3 millennia after that. In that situation you could have a few thousand years worth of Stark Kings available in the crypts by the time of the First Long Night.
Ntm yes it seems it was only the Kings and possibly their direwolves who could rise but what if the other Stark family members also buried in the crypts are also at play ? unlikely but not totally out of the question. Or let us assume as suggested it is only anyone with a statue in the crypts (then or now) , these are likely super soldiers be it the spirits or the statues themselves , and such perhaps does not take that many to make a massive impact. Of course a lot of this is pure conjecture but if they are likely super soldiers and possibly of a huge very strong variety they could do a considerable amount for the side they are fighting for with perhaps not necessarily a very large number of them. Plus it is not as if the dead Stark Kings are the lone weapon or only opposing force , they would be a supplemental component to the the large force already needing to be assembled to combat the Others , be it the first time or the impending conflict in the current narrative. Looking at it this time around there are anywhere from 5-8 thousand years of Stark Kings of Winter , Lords and those with statues to call upon.
And looking at the original Long Night , the CotF who were of much larger numbers at the time were in the alliance with whatever magic and weaponry at their disposal for this conflict possibly with the help of actual giants as well ; both of which are nearly extinct now and would not be in the fight in the current narrative but probably were the first time around. Direwolves were also much more numerous back then and could have been used in battle by the Stark armies and / or skin-changed by the CotF during the first Long Night conflict. So despite having less dead Stark Kings to call upon the first alliance had other means to make up the difference comparatively to what will be a much more numerous amount of Stark dead to draw from in the current narrative.
I think Joramun was just lying and he orchestrated an attack with the starks. King beyond the wall canât just admit to asking for help. The horn probably only works south of the wall and was created as a fail safe meant to be presented to the starks by fleeing free folk. It would be beneficial for everyone to get people out of the way of the others. This is why it makes no sound when Jon blows it because he is north of the wall.
The stark dead are all protected in their special crypt that death canât reach with their swords the others donât like etc. I think the point is that when the wall falls and winter falls with it, the others canât just resurrect your dead out from under you.
Brynden sounds different on this episode of NotACast the one true chapter-by-chapter podcast going through A Song of Ice and Fire one chapter a week!

@@JoeMagician I meant to imply that in this video you were Joe 'BFish' Magician, playing the part of Quentyn's better half. Really great discussion by the way, thank you.
Good content, I love Euron as he seems to me to be the culmination of the entire series, which seems quite obvious to be a Lovecraftian horror dressed up as a high fantasy. Can't wait to see the apocalypse descend on Westeros
I feel Euron's connection with Lovecraft is a red herring. I feel he is George's version of Paul Atreides in his world; the prodigal son returns from exile, obvious body apart stained by drugs, superb manipulator, rejects religion and institutions, uses his own mystique to push people
Think i might subscribe

Euron could be Bloodravenâs early attempt at creating a green seer like Bran đ€Żđ€Żđ€Żwoaaaaa
I love this stream and itâs ideas! Iâm just curious if anyone has any thoughts on who the pale shadow in the form of a woman is that Aeron sees standing next to the tentacled Euron seated on the iron throne could be? She is said to be laughing with Euron and has fire in her hands. Could this be his possible spy Quaithe? Shiera Seastar? Or possibly the Mad Maid Malora Hightower? Malora being labeled mad and schooled in magic and sorcery at the top of a flaming tower makes her an interesting choice as a mad paramour or queen to play off Enronâs madness.
Both Bran beeing very strong and Hodors mind already beeing shattered both factor in. Would be interessting how it plays out of he tries someone else, maybe he would sucseed still, but it will not be pretty, like at all
How do I find more from PoorQuentyn?

One thing about the âEuron didnât have enough time to get to ashaiâiâ thing; that depends on when he learned to sale by the stars. Velaryon fanboi though I may be, Corlys was almost certainly coast-hopping on his journeys. Euron otoh, we have seen sale the open ocean/sea...so he can move a lot faster than my man Corlys, even if they were traveling with identical fleets.
Iâm dubious of Euronâs claim to have gotten to Ashaiâi, but it would be amusing if the one claim he is never able to get people to believe is the one that was true & he got all of his shit that he didnât get from the Warlocks, in Ashaiâi, but people just think it must have come from Valyria because itâs so impressive.

@Joe Magician and PoorQuentyn, you guys should check out the 2018 movie "Overlord". It starts off as US soldiers go behind enemy lines in Nazi Germany to fulfill a mission the day before D-Day, then shit gets SUPER WEIRD. Pilou is either the main or one of the main bad guys in the film and he is straight up book Euron. And he fucking kills it.
Based on that performance, I'd be willing to bet that if he was the one who came up with the character choices for show Euron, it's because he thought what was written was even worse. At least show Euron is Hollywood-pirate, if nothing else. His first scene and the scene where he rides in on the ram and captures Yara etc were cool.

I hate every choice the showrunners made from mid-S4 onwards with a visceral passion far more intense than the wickedest revenge fantasies of the Dornish, Cersei and Littlefinger combined ... *BUT* ... at 1:40:00 or so you say that portraying the Euron of the Forsaken chapter would never fly with HBO's audience. I I think they'd eat it up, just like we're all so fascinated with the Eldritch Apocalypse! The HBO audience, born with The Sopranos and Carnivale, and weened on The Wire, is up for anything and everything ... the sicker and more twisted, the better. The more intellectually challenging, the better. The more likely to stand the test of time, the better. That's why Game of Thrones was such a callous betrayal of HBO's audience and of its legacy. HBO deeply underestimated us and let those two entitled, no-talent, ADD-addled, frat-boy dilettantes thumb their noses at us and at both the literary profundity and unrivaled pure entertainment value of ASoIaF. Okay ... on to the second half.
Nah, the woman is not a show thing, Sherlock calles her that in the bookoriginal too

euron has gotten ahold of the One Ring. I am seeing old town as Minas tirith - but will get spanked harder. gandalf just took off, and left sam lol.
or rather, he acts as if he had.
You don't blow drinking horns.
I donât think that the three eyed crow helped or hurt Euron as a child. I donât think he was ever actually selected and told to go North like Bran was. This might have been traumatizing enough to his ego that he has spent his life trying to get even with and be worthy of the Crow. Basically made the mistake of showing Euron Magic was real and fueling his thirst for power. Euron as pretend magician who is leaning on magic items makes him a great enemy for Sam.
