Awesome collection.
Haha. Heath is so me.
Heath 2 weeks ago: "I got too much stuff, ya'll"
Heath today: "Ummmm...."
Haha! I do have too much stuff, but not enough B-westerns!
half way through the video and i don't recognize a single title so far!!! great collection haul!
They're all super obscure!
I would love for you to interview Sam Sherman! The man has an endless supply of classic movie knowledge. The two of you would work well together.
Absolutely love your channel. I do the same myself search Car boot sales and charity shops for old VHS tapes of movies that I watched with my Dad and old musical LPs that my Mother would play ( she loved Mario Lanzer ) it's like a worm blanket of love that i miss from the time that they were still with me . I was buzzing when I found Gods Gun on CZcams my Dad loved that movie . And your absolutely correct sometimes you can't find things on VHS , DVD , Blu-ray or 4K so streaming is OK
My dad would have lost his mind over that collection. He loved the Poverty Row westerns. He preferred them to the big studio ones. B-movie westerns and Poverty Row westerns were his thing.
I've been recently discovering a lot of films of the 70s which were before my time. 10 years ago I had very little interest. You never know what people will be into and what they will be interested to discover. Naturally these films will be less accessible and the audience will dwindle, but I do believe there will always be someone interested, even if they don't know it yet. It's absolutely wonderful seeing these films find a worthy home and it was a lot of fun seeing you discover them one by one. Stay awesome Heath and keep sending the good vibes.
Very well said. A big part of what I'm getting interested in right now is because of my age and because it's a natural progression of my fandom as I dig further and further back. I didn't start actively seeking out movies from the 1930s until I was around 30!
Never heard of these movies. Now I can add some of them to my watchlist!
Older Alpha cases were very nice. Hard to get those thick ones now. I have a bin I kept for replacements but had to recycle the rest. Too many. Great score.
The ventriloquist cowboy Max Terhune, and his dummy Elmer, appeared in 21 "Three Mesquiteers" entries, and all 24 of the films in the "Range Buster" series. And, yes, a ventriloquist cowboy is as weird and wonderful as you'd expect.
Thanks for the info! Those Terhune Range Busters films may have justified the whole lot!
If I had bought all of those Western DVDs, the cowboy ventriloquist and dummy one would have definitely been the first one in my player!
In the 70s in Fort Worth, TX on Camp Bowie Blvd. There was a bar called Quick Draw and their deal was they played old B-westerns. Lots of Bob Steele. That was back in the days of the nationwide nostalgia craze.
What an interesting collection, especially when so many are sealed! It's pretty cool that this is a curated collection of westerns. It's a great example of a collection rather than a hoard!
These old western DVDs are great! I have a lot of these films in those 50 or 100 movie packs. You get the movies but you lose out on the cool artwork. I put the ones I do have as individual discs in sleeves.
WOW! That's a huge acquisition for your collection. The only time I did something like that but at half the scale was when I bought 150 Severin DVD titles during one of their sales. Good showing and cool video Heath!👉🙂👈
Love the artwork on some of those older movies.
I never thought I'd say this, heath, but you're making the idea of sleeving some DVDs pretty appealing right now
I love it and highly recommend it for discs in single cases without elaborate packaging or bonus goodies.
This is all sorts of awesome! I had all of John Wayne’s ‘30’s B’s on VHS and loved them all. Fun stuff to go through!
I actually own some of the Alpha Video DVDs. I love their stuff.
Nice seeing such a big collection now in good hands! I don't know, what they're about, we didn't have those here ein Germany, but I dig the coverart... in those sleeves, thy look like vintage comic books. 🙂 Congrats.
This channel is a gift. Thanks for all your uploads. I've discovered so much here.
Heath that collection is amazing. I think Quentin Tarantino will be calling you for some source material one day. I don’t know if you are allowed to do this or if it will cost you money, could you place some of these old westerns on your channel and have your own commentaries while we all watch? I know you want to keep these alive but in some way have your own western channel?
The movies would have to be in the public domain (which most of these are) and would also have to have no watermarks. I'm not sure about a western channel, but someone suggested I do audio commentaries for some of these old movies and I like that idea. We'll have to see what the future holds!
Looks like a wellspring of potential terrific material. Great entertainment to go to between big feature viewing. I find these classic westerns are great at the end of a busy day. Pop one of these bad boys in and they are almost always enjoyable. Can't pass up a great deal! Enjoy!
Excellent Collection! Very Exciting Indeed. You're in for some fun viewing these! I love the old tv Westerns.
Now THAT'S a collection!
my mom (72 yr old) would love those old westerns
WOW! Congratulations on such a beautiful haul.
Bob Steele was in a couple of john Wayne's movie when he got old.it was like a passing of the torch.
Thanks, Heath! God bless and stay safe!
The Bold Caballero starring Robert Livingston is very significant in that is the first Zorro movie shot in two strip technicolor and with sound. For many years the color version was thought to be lost, it was found and what you have on that DVD is the color version, I have an old black and white version on VHS as well as a DVD of the color version. Yes I did enjoy this movie as I think you will as well.
Awesome collection
Great movie etc haul Heath happy trails exploring them all!
Great! Never seen so many 'Ten Gallon' Hats! :-) a sprinkling of great actors in there too. Thanks
The hats sometimes border on ridiculousness!
That's one helluva haul there Heath! Fantastic score!
I'm glad these found a good home. I know you will appreciate them Heath
Wow! Roy Rogers is one of my favorites. There’s a movie ..Son of Trigger, I swear they just made horses actually fight in that one. I remember jumping when trigger got clopped in the face and was close to tears when they said he was blind. But he still went out and fought the bad horse in the end. Good stuff. Also crazy stunts. All of them are professional horse handlers and circus performers
The real horse abuse in a lot of these old westerns is really troubling. Hopefully the equestrian combat in that Roy Rogers movie was mostly screen magic!
@@CerealAtMidnight I’m sure it was. Roy wouldn’t risk hurting his best friend trigger
There were 726 Triggers! Just kidding. Probably.
Looks great. Glad you are excited. Looking at that haul makes me anxious. I wouldn't be able to cope with that many genre-specific movies.
Sick!
Nice haul!!!
This is wonderful! Really cool stuff.
That haul is a channel in itself.
I know Kino and Arrow dabble, but my bold prediction is that the boutique label world is gonna go nuts on these kind of movies after they run out of hong kong action movies lol. Only after 11 more shaw brothers boxsets though
One can hope, right? I'd like to be on the bleeding edge of that trend! And hey, maybe I can have a book written about it by the time it happens!
My favorite finds are double features. Double features are what makes Drive-In, Grindhouse, and Midnight movie watching fun. I think I own all of MGM's Midnight movie double features. This is how I built up the bulk of my movie collection. There are times I think I am overdoing it collecting blu-rays and 4K's, because I always find myself putting on those old Alpha Video or Image Entertainment DVD's when I'm actually watching movies. The artwork is so much nicer, and the snapper cases have double sided artwork or a brief essay about the movie. I like finding the Anchor Bay Hammer and Drive-In double features, but some of them are miserably expensive online.
Damn...this is a great pickup...
I have some Alpha releases of old crime and gangster movies. A bit over a year ago I bought a 300 plus CD collection of mostly classical music. I'm still going through it.
Wow 😮 other than awesome video man 😎!
Others may have covered some of this in the comments below...but just in case
There were 24 Range Busters films in all, with folks drifting in and out of the line-up over the course of the series. Only Max (Alibi) Terhune - and his dummy Elmer - appeared in all 24 installments. There are a few films in which Elmer appears to have acquired self-awareness and presents as a sentient, independent being. Keep an eye out for those, they're pretty creepy, if you're in the right mood. All of the Monogram Range Busters appeared at one time or another as one of the Three Mesquiteers over at Republic. I'd have to look this up to confirm, but I'm pretty sure the main line-up of Ray "Crash" Corrigan, Dusty King and Max Terhune appeared together as a team in both series. A lot of these B's were filmed at The Corrigan Ranch - so he was getting paychecks from both ends. You're going to become very familiar with the twin beer signs outside the barroom entrance.
I'm a big fan of the trio western series: Range Busters, Three Mesquiteers, Rough Riders (with Buck Jones and Tim McCoy), Trail Blazers (which featured Ken Maynard, Hoot Gibson and Tom Steele among the teams).
Also gotta love Johnny Mack Brown, owner/operator of the most devastating haymake West of Gower Gulch.
Have fun! And thanks for continuing to highlight these lively films.
Any copies of "Mystery Mountain" left? I've been meaning to order that from one source or another for a while.
Thanks for typing all this out! The only trio westerns I had before now were the John Wayne entries from the Three Mesquiteers films--and not even all of those.
I'll send you a copy of Mystery Mountain, still sealed. Do you have a U.S. address? Email me at CerealMidnight@gmail.com and I'll get it out this week.
Gabby Hayes always reminded me of earnest from Jim varney
Yes on speaking with Sam Sherman. Would love to see him on Cereal At Midnight. Met him once. Super nice.
Great pickups Heath, depending on the price.
I got a great deal. Less than $1 per movie.
I grew up in the 1960s and 70s in NYC. I think by then the popularity of westerns was fading with fewer westerns on TV every year. What we did watch on TV were the movies of the 1930s and 1940s many of which I now own on BD/DVD. Grainy b/w prints cut up with commercials but that's where I started to love these movies. I was so happy to buy the VHS of Casablanca, it looked better on my TV than any broadcast of it ever did. Citizen Kane used to be broadcast on WOR-TV in NYC. An awful dark muddy print but that's all that was around back then. It's only when I bought the restored version on DVD in 2001 that I could fully appreciate that movie. Even the VHS versions of Citizen Kane were all pretty bad starting with the first Nostalgia Merchant release (catalog# VH8002), and even the last official VHS release on the Turner (catalog# 2053) label was poor.
That is awesome!!! I love westerns. Have a huge collection of them. Ken Maynard was born not to far from where i live. Im in a cowboy reenacting group and we do an event there for Ken Maynard Days.
That's awesome! I may have to come visit during Ken Maynard Days one year.
Edgar G Ulmer - Texas cheapies- Amazing Transparent Man and Beyond the Time Barrier.
1. I hope your wife is very understanding 2. I hope your floor is reinforced...Love the last ride Hank shirt!
She was super-encouraging that I buy them, which is just further proof that she's the best. Thankfully, the sleeved DVDs (see later in this video) take up almost no room and weight very little!
I have so much stuff between albums,45"s.blu rays and cd"s that I went to Home Depot and invested in some Jack Post"s for the basement, Peace of mind!@@CerealAtMidnight
I've never seen Mystery Mountain but would check it out. I enjoy a classic Western from time to time.
I want to know more about the Underground Rustlers and that ventriloquist dummy. That was a generation before Shotgun Red (a puppet) hit Hee Haw and later TNN.
So I've done a little bit of digging and the Range Busters series (24 movies, I think) consisted of three leads, one of whom was a ventriloquist. Both he and his dummy were part of the team!
@@CerealAtMidnight This is news to me and I'm digging it. Thanks for the research. I hope you begin your epic career long exploration of these cool movies with the Range Busters.
I'm a tad biased since I saw Shotgun Red perform on a riverboat once.
Last weekend I traveled across the state to see Randy Feltface--an Australian puppet stand up comedian act.
The world needs more ventriloquist acts too!
😮
I'd find room for the cases. 😁
If you ever find a copy of the western The Sunset Princess from 1918 I would love to know how it looks.
Alpha DVD's are so nice.I can't believe you to throw them away
Nice Buster Crab (flash gordon, buck rogers, Tarzan) westerns!
how could possibly watch all those?! That being said, very cool and you'll have fun trying!
I'll say this, it seems like more than it is. Most of the movies are under an hour, so they're like an episode of television. Last night I managed to knock out a film noir AND one of these old westerns in 2 1/2 hours, which is the length of most modern movies now. It's still a lot, but it's not insurmountable. Also, because they're so low budget, they go down pretty easily. They're like potato chips.
Im aslo buying a 300 movie set
There are silent movies that the only way to watch them is on Alpha Video DVD's. Eyes of the Mummy (1918) for example. Bela Lugosi's first movie, Daughter of the Night (1921) I never would have discovered without Alpha Video and AV's prints are public domain they can be aired on character hosting shows, like Elvira or Zacherly.
I'd be interested in your duplicates.
Will you email me at CerealMidnight@gmail.com?
Im aslo getting a 300 movie set
Alpha Video has some amazing obscure stuff. Old films struck from collectors 16 mm reels. I would guess all of their stuff is in the public domain, but what really bothers me is that over time they started putting their logo in the bottom right corner of the screen. It would come and go. I never was happy with that.
Amazing haul!
I'm not a fan of watermarks, either. I know they want to protect their preservation work to keep their prints from being stolen, but it's sad for us movie fans who don't love seeing a brand on our films.
Heath, you should do a giveaway of your duplicates. There might be people out there (myself included) who are really into B-Westerns like yourself
Shoot me an email to CerealMidnight@gmail.com
DVD? What no 4k?! Just kidding. I buy DVD's all the time.
True Lies and Abyss 4K pre-orders dropped today. Are you planning on doing a video when they release and how they blus/4K have been delayed for years by Cameron? It’s been a saga. I never thought we’d see the day!
Honestly, I'll probably leave that to the other channels. That's right up Jeff's alley over at Films At Home and I'm sure he'll have a first look.
One question - you mention towards the end of the video 'I'm going to watch these for the rest of my life' Do you have/keep at least one DVD/Blu-Ray player (still boxed) that you have put away as a spare playback device? Maybe in 10 years or so they won't be for sale/available new. Or do you think that's not the case?
I think DVD players will always be available and will never go away. This comes up from time to time and I like to point out that I can still buy a brand new 3.5 floppy disc drive, 8-track player, and blank cassette tapes, decades after those technologies bit the dust. I just bought a brand new Mac DVD drive for my laptop over the Christmas holidays. DVD is not only not a dead technology, it's the highest selling physical media format. As long as there's money to be made from the millions of DVD customers all over the world, I truly believe someone will make a player.
Stand-alone DVD players are rare but of course every Blu-ray player sold plays and upscales DVDs. But it seems like manufacturers of Blu-ray players don't come out with new players every year for whatever reason. @@CerealAtMidnight
How do you handle the non-anamorphic widescreen DVDs? I found that using the zoom function on a 16:9 TV for anything larger than about 40" isn't really watchable as the pixels take over the image. I guess I could watch them on my 20" Sony CRT, but the big screen is more fun. This is why, while I don't mind watching DVD, I shy away if I can't 100% confirm that it is anamorphic or the original aspect ratio is 4:3.
I honestly can't recall the last DVD I watched that wasn't anamorphic. Most of these old movies that I'm watching were shot in 4:3, so that hasn't been an issue.
@@CerealAtMidnight It seems like the last few I've bought at Thrift Stores / Pawn Shops / Big Lots have been non-anamorphic...even major titles like "The Abyss." That's why I try to stick with Blu-ray when out hunting...don't want to get home and be disappointed. The only ones I know I'm safe with are the Warner Archive MOD discs as all the ones I've found at thrift stores so far (~8 widescreen) have all be anamorphic.
Dam Heath that was a must buy...........TRUE entertainment...........So dam COOL....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do any of these have a Blu-ray by now?
Not to my knowledge.
Maybe you can review or showcase a western film each Wednesday, for #westernwednesdays!
Always a mixed bag with Alpha but those are some uncommon titles so I get the want. I was always fine with their transfers on the old tube TV but some months back I popped in a Sheena disc on the 4K and it was pretty wretched. Washed out and harshly compressed. An Alpha horror title from the 70s I also checked out fared better.
What the quality of those Alpha Video releases? They are really cheap on Deep Discount, but I have not pulled the trigger on any? Like are they watchable on a big screen 4k TV?
The ones I've got in past were vhs quality.probably wouldn't look good on 4ktv.
I've a few Alpha titles on DVD and they look like SP speed VHS rips on a CRT on 4K they'll look even worse.🤔
Not great. Usually about a 4/10. In many cases, these old movies only survive on video tape dubs from 16 mm prints. Sometimes they're also kinescopes, which is a camera pointed at a screen. But as rough as that sounds, Alpha Video often has the best prints available, out of everyone. Their work with Sam Sherman is as close to being sourced from original elements as some of these old poverty row movies will ever get.
Hey.... so which sleeves do you recommend for anyone looking to slim down their dvd collection? ... asking for a friend! ;)
I prefer Tarifold brand. They're a little bigger in size than their competitors, but that means you don't have to fold the spine of the DVD or Blu-ray case in half to make it fit. After my first video about it, Tarifold reached out and offered a discount to Cereal At Midnight viewers. It doesn't benefit me in any way, but it will save you a little dough if you buy directly from them. Alternately, if you buy them through Amazon, I get a small commission if you use my affiliate link.

@@CerealAtMidnight thank you kindly!
@@CerealAtMidnightthanks for sharing this! Placed an order through their website for some sleeves and binders. Sorry about no commission, but I did leave a note for customer service that you sent me. Hopefully they hook you up with some free stuff 😊
Awesome! I hope the sleeves make your life a little easier.
Darn tooting... you'll need a bag or two of jerky to wade yer way through that lot! Alpha video?? Hmmm... I think I might have some ancient horror film on the label, but I tend to 🐂 clear of them usually. But ya know what yer gonna git with 'em. So..., "you pays yer money...".
Nice haul Heath! Can I purchase the empty cases from you when you sleeve them?😉
I wish someone would. I've tried to sell them, but people don't want them so now I'm just throwing them away. I looked into recycling but that's not an option here.
Donate them to your local 'thrift' stores.
I used to work at Blockbuster here in the UK and our shop got rid of 100s of DVD cases due to a change in Company policy, which were all going to end up as landfill.
I took them round to some of the local charity shops and they were happy to bundle them up 10 for a Quid or something like that...
My thrift store won't take empty cases, they throw them away.
@@CerealAtMidnightThanks for your reply... pity about the cases but I suppose they've got to prioritise their space these days and I was at "The 'busters" over a decade ago where more folk were probably after empty DVD cases anyway.
P.S. loved the video and you ROCK and that's OFFICIAL!
The big question - how much for 300 western DVDs?
I wonder what the story is behind all these. The person clearly spent a lot of time selecting these, yet none watched? Like others have commented, I haven’t heard of a single one of these over 10 minutes in!
This video may be In Color, but is it In Living Color ... On NBC? (Cue Color Palette Peacock)
An interview with Samuel Sherman would be too cool; by all means, let's see it!!!
(I must express amusement at a title like "Boots of Destiny"; reminds me of the Lon Chaney Jr INNER SANCTUM title, "Pillow of Death", which brings to mind the possibility of a series of genteel, refined British mysteries with titles like "Doily of Blood" or "Teacup of Terror" or something like that.)
By the time you said "completely boxed in", I pictured a thumbnail of your clutching hand emerging from a pile of DVD cases like an image out of Tales From The Crypt.
Bing Bing Bong (NBC chimes)
You’re brave to pick up so many Alpha Video discs at once. I hope it didn’t cost so much. It really and truly sucks when Alpha is the only physical media option for a lesser known title as they are just about the bottom of the barrel for quality.
It is rare for an Alpha version to be solid or better than other options but it does occasionally happen. Every one I’ve ever picked up has been a total roll of the dice because you never know what quality to expect. I’ve had ones be watchable or halfway decent and then others are among the absolute worst presentations I’ve ever seen on any format and make even bad CZcams uploads of PD materials look good.
And then there’s those awful stinky cheap plastic cases on a lot of them! Those drive me nuts so hopefully this lot is mostly the better standard cases.
For me the biggest thing Alpha has are various serials that don’t have any other releases but even those I’ve tried are usually deplorable quality. Their discs for Don Winslow of the Navy for example are among the worst transfers I’ve ever seen.
Quality is definitely below par, but for so many of these public domain movies, what's on Alpha Video discs is often better than the prints that Mill Creek included on their 50 movie packs back in the day, and they're definitely better than what ends up on CZcams, which can often be stretched, zoomed, and compressed to oblivion. What I've watched so far has been "watchable," and that's about all I can ask for with most of these, considering the obscurity of the pictures, the lack of source elements, and the poor treatment of these films for the past 40 years.
Thanks so much for commenting, Crusader!
Why if you dont know whats in the box
First
Sorry I got to watych my Blu-ray physical media, Pina, right now. bye!
3 dollars well spent but I wouldn't have paid $4 for that set which should be torture viewing
I thought you said not to buy big lots of movies?
You talking about that video from years ago? If we're talking about the same one, my point was not to buy things you don't want just to have a lot of things on your shelf in in hopes of impressing people. But listen, in seven years, a person changes a lot. I don't even feel the same about some of the things I said six months ago, let alone five or six years ago. These westerns are a big part of my focus these days and I will watch every one of them.
@@CerealAtMidnightFair enough!
LEAVE THEM SEALED & GET THEM GRADED!!!!! hehe
Great pick-up! Nice mix of all types of forms - movies, TV, serials...what a score!
What a waste. They aren’t sports cards. Also how do you determine condition without opening it? At least with comics they open sealed books to determine condition. Or is this just a case of people valuing the cases and covers and not caring about content whatsoever.
This guy is gonna bury himself in movies
It'd make a nice thumbnail. Like the American Beauty poster, but with Heath and classic DVDs in sleeves.
It's all good, for everything that comes in, things are going out, too. With my method of storing catalog titles in sleeves, I'm freeing up more room than I've had in years.
On this poster, would I be naked like on the American Beauty poster? If so, I need to get some Ozempic.
YeAh, bUT dO tHEy hAvE sLiPcovERs?!😲

@@CerealAtMidnight 😅❤️
Did you not just make a video saying you were cutting back because you are totally out of room even with sleeping 🙀🙀🙀 wat was a reasonable price? No Range Rider or Kit Carson ?
I can't win with some of y'all.
@@CerealAtMidnight I know some deals are too good to pass up!! It was just interesting the timing of this and the other video . I find myself doing the same thing saying no more and then having to eat my words. That is the collecting illness ( or fun) depending on how you look at it.
We got it all on UHF...
That should be a shirt, Charlie!
…..why???
Because I love it and this is one of my particular areas of interest these days.
This video is some legit DVD ASMR!! Intentional?? If not you may have a budding new video type 😂
the relapse is real. must've been a deal, because havent u been saying youre not gonna buy bulk due to space 😂?? great score. SEEEEAAALED... oh not sealed anymore. lol
Such a waste of cases...
You'll definitely be passing me in Roy Rogers viewing now. Still, you're clearly anti-physical media.
That dude from Blu-ray dot com told me I didn't love physical media the day after I bought all these movies. I don't know why some of us feel the need to try to put people in boxes or keep them out of fandom. But then, that's kind of their whole deal over on that site. They make hundreds of thousands of dollars from the "us VS them" mentality. Divide and profit.
No disrespect but most of the Alpha releases I purchased were such garbage I put them in the garage sale. Public domain from any source they could get their hands on.
The sad truth is that for many public domain movies, this is the best we'll ever get. There are often no source elements, and even if there were, it doesn't make a lot of sense for someone to restore them if their work can be stolen due to the lack of copyright on the film.
Alpha videos are poor quality.
You always complain about your lack of space or talk about not just consuming and then do things like this just to make content. How about walk your own walk instead
That’s a bit harsh but it does seem to be a confusing lack of consistency.
I would say you have a decent argument on your hands, IF Heath had purchased 300 random titles but these are Heath's special area of interest. Space wise, he mentions here that he is putting them in sleeves.
He will one day go “….ooohhhhh!” And sell almost all of it because he’s got hoarder tendencies but not quite an actual hoarder.
Maybe read your last sentence again
@@intake_cinema ok fair I see ur point
