The key to splitting wood like you were is use wood as long or longer than the axe and small enough in diameter to grip it and axe. Using both hands so your hands are completely clear. Great review
The biggest advantage of this ax is that the ax handle and the ax blade are one piece. If you look at Swedish or German axes, the blade and handle are all detachable, so accidents can happen.

James I am figuring like everything we purchase as we get it fine turned in to our liking it will be perfect. It doesn’t take the mega expensive tools to get the job done even though it is nice if we have the funds to put out for them. Often it is just knowing a good quality budget friendly tool and then working it and modifying it to our needs. You’ll get it going on as time passes. Thanks for share 👍🏻

Like you I just dont feel comfortable with hatchets or axes, I have always just used a big ole strong knife to process lil stuff. Looked like some shroomage on that log lol. Seems like it's a decent enough hatchet. I heat my home with wood and have processed thousands of pounds of wood through the years and wood standing on end is easiest to split no doubt about it. Once you put a good edge in her I'm sure she will serve you well
I been wanting to get a nice one. I use cheaper ones all the time. I never use a knife to batton so I use them alot. You'll like it when you get more used to it.
Don't know if I would waste money on a Dewalt hatchet...they should stick to power tools and leave camping and bushcrafting to the regular makers of hatches. Last thing I want to think about is work when I'm sitting around a fire and seeing Dewalt stamped into the hatchet sticking into a stump. You know what I mean? Anywho thanks for your review.
