I got STUCK in the MUD! Mudlarking a London Creek
Vložit
- čas přidán 6. 08. 2024
- Go up stream with a paddle, with Si, Matt and Dean as they scour the muddy banks of a London creek in search of long lost relics. The mud is deep and dangerous, will they make it out and what will they find lurking in the mud?
Thanks to Tracey Bradshaw for finding out:
WA WILLSON were cordial, ginger beer and mineral water manufacturers from at least 1910 to the 40’s (that I have found so far) at 22 Eastney Street, Trafalgar Road, Greenwich SE10.
Love it when you say something is “Vicki “ because it gets my attention and I feel like you are talking to me! I think it’s great that you have such a sharing, respectful community of colleagues and friends who all enjoy mudlarking together! ! ❤️🦀🥥🍾🚣🏼♂️⛏
Victoria Smith Thanks Vicky! 😉
Never want to use your paddle for pushing in mud I’ve broken paddles that way. Then your up the creek without a paddle. And you know what creek that is. Lol
Great video
I saw the black swan and instantly I was like "WTF is one of our swans doing over there?" Dude must have got drunk and taken a wrong turn.
Can’t fault your perseverance, what you do for us to get a video.Thank you.
What a great laugh at the start. I’m catching up on all videos from 🛌
I'm always amazed by these mudlarking videos and the things that get found. Things from the past seem so substantial and made to endure, compared to what we have today. I doubt very much that, a hundred years from now, anyone will get a thrill out of finding some plastic milk jug or soda can in the mud.
Great hunt and cool finds👍🤗
Thanks!
Loved seeing you in a kayak. It's really cool that you were able to see what's around the area as well as in the water. Gives you a whole other advantage. I love those little ink jars.
Thanks for another great video!!😃🌊
New subscriber through Nicola White! Cheers from Costa Rica!
Andie Welcome Andie! Sit back, relax and enjoy!
They’re a great team. !
WA WILLSON were cordial, ginger beer and mineral water manufacturers from at least 1910 to the 40’s (that I have found so far) at 22 Eastney St Greenwich SE10 (still trying to find out more)
PS - mud technicians 😂
Wow thanks Tracey! Any reliable web links you can find, put them here and I will bung them in the description. Awesome!
Si-finds info I’ve found so far is on Ancestry (London, England, City Directories, 1736-1943) and I’m still searching for more info (preferably an advertisement) - it’s 3.15am here (Adelaide, South Aus) but I can’t sleep until I get this sorted 😂
@@traceybradshaw Go to bed! It'll still be there in the morning! Bless you
Si-finds I’ve found an ad, not very graphic but all the info is there. It’s a subscription site so I can’t post the link, can I email you the image?
Nick! What you doing down there? LOL!
Congratulations on all the discoveries. Very interesting to learn a little something about those you find of most interest. No cola will like the doll I believe. See you on your next treasure hunt.
Wow, now that's MUD larking!! Lol! Another AWESOME video! All the best to you!
Nicola will laugh when you give her the little Barbie, lol!
My favorite finds are the pork pie ink well & the green temperance bottle
Great finds, always looking forward to the videos😍
Great finds! Thanks for sharing!
Mud humor is fun. Fun day. Nicola will love the figure that looks like her!!
I used to call those 'turtle tracks' when I get stuck that way. (!)
I'm actually comforted that most bear's grease was pig fat. Killing bears for hair oil seems insanely wasteful. At least people were eating the pigs.
Some people eat bear meat. It's supposed to be fatty like pork.
But who wants to smell like a bear?
A pick and a shovel. Looks like someone abruptly retired. 😆
Always an education.Thanks Si.
I agree - "Temperance Brewery" is something of an oxymoron.
Loving your videos... Looking forward to more
relentless12345678 Thanks. Yes more mad ideas to come to fruition!
@@Sifinds hope so... I much rather watch your videos than TV
relentless12345678 you’re too kind x
I love that you film nature too. Nicola is rubbing off on you.
pat goff it’s hard to ignore!
I agree but some men don't pay attention to it
Always a pleasure to watch your videos.
Simon looks like a waterbug at the beginning 😂
Cool video, yeahhh those honey holes will come out of know where lol kinda reminds me of a fish out of water lmao
Mud Pies and Pork Pies all in a day's work. Very brave of you to venture into that stuff .
Simon, that was a great video...love the music...very much an adventure! I wouldn't have thought it was so demanding. That was fun! Thank you for taking us along.
What a great and messy time!! I love the little pork pie ink wells you find, so cool. Ah, and such a beauty was that black swan! I thoroughly enjoyed myself! See you next time! xx ~Jen
mymagiclieswithin Thanks Jen!!!
As always "My Si" another great video
Muddy, muddy mess! Great fun though. Hope everyone hosed off before returning home. Can't wait for the next installment.
Rebecca Eddy Thanks Rebecca! Yes it was a particularly muddy one. Lol
Oh yum a sewerage outlet. I though canoes went best in water.
Great quality video! I like the music you are using for your video as well. As usual great work and thanks for sharing! GL and HH from Ontario,Canada🙏🏼🍀👍🏼🇨🇦
Hi, thanks! Glad you like the tunes too!
Dam Simon I'd wear gloves in that mess.
KEN.UK
Si, you are so funny!🤪
Thanks Mudlover!
Si, your mystery item looks like an old insulator. Great video. I think Nicola has some of her swan friends following you. The wink at the end was very clever! Happy hunting, Dave.
Thanks Dave , I make you right about the swans! ; )
If it's made of porcelain, yes it's an insulator. But if mad of bras ,it's a builders line,to find the right corner like a water level .sorry,I don't have the word. In greec it's the line of level.
Glad your luck kept you from getting stuck in the muck!!
Lovely to see the Black Swan visiting you over there, cheers from 🇦🇺👍🏻👏
Margii Smith Yeah I don’t think I’ve seen one before! Maybe because they swim upside down 😂
Black swans were presented to H M Queen at about the time of her Coronation. They were kept in St James Park and as a small boy I can remember being taken to see them. This is probably an escapee descendant.
@@Sifinds Black Swans do live in the U.K. in some places. For example Dawlish seafront in Devon & some lakes at stately homes.
Our Black Swans are just beautiful; so good that you guys across the Pond get to enjoy them too. Love from Sydney 🇦🇺
OMG you mucky puppies!! I surprised they don't dredge it out - then you'd love to have it all go tru' a mesh to catch all the finds - wouldn't that be cool? I didn't miss the cameras watching even that creek, hmmm.... You guys are quite brave, as you say, not for the inexperienced or faint hearted! All good fun! 😎🐾😉
Small Wonda Thanks. The path less travelled and all that!
@@Sifinds For sure, I always used to want to go that way!! (Less the muck, perhaps!)
Love your Videos 👍👍👍
I ve found a vulcanised rubber stopper marked WILLSON Se.
Also had no luck in London records, but did find WILLSON in the Midlands area ☺
See my description for updated info on WILLSON mate
❤️ the banter
So is mud technician another word for mud god...😂😂 Keep up the good work...👍
Hi James. I think someone else already has the name Mud God ; ) I'm happy being a Mudlover - or when it comes to navigating through a muddy quagmire, then I become a mud technician, haha
Yes Steven (Mud God) from Mud Men..lol ok Mudlover, but you are better kayaking when there is water..😂😂
@@jamesmckenzie2576 Must remember that, cheers pal ; )
Si-finds welcome buddy, great video again though. Keep up the great finds and videos, I totally enjoy the videos...👍
Mud and bottles , thanks for sharing
Black Swan Si. Not native (Australian) so an escapee from captivity originally.
Think they are breeding in the Netherlands so could be on holiday 😉
Another day in the wonderful world of Si-finds and mud diving. Like others I’ve googled the bottle it seems likely it’s American and from the Temperance movement. A lot of brewers rather than shut down or be closed turned the machines and skills over to soft drinks in order to stay in business. Great find.
Thanks Chris, that sounds very plausible, there was a W A Willson in Greenwich as 'Welshman' pointed out. Usually you would get the brewers and bottlers - two different companies. We had a big temperance movement over here too...
Nice finds, Si! Gives a whole new meaning to the "mud" in mud larking, though! I thought for a minute there you would have to do the "crawly gator" to get downstream!
Thanks Cynthia, haha, thank god I squirmed free!
Haha what funny video , a real.lads day out! Really adventurous, I like that ! You mucky pups ! Nice idea with the boat, I have one too, I go magnet fishing with it ! Nice idea with Nic in a bottle, that will make her laugh 😂. The Cornish cup too.
I think that place has more potential !
Cheers Karl, yes we'll go back one day!
One of the funniest ever getting stuck in the muck!
Oooo...stuck in the mud! We were on our sofa trying to help you out! You should be using 🧤 in that poop!
🎵Mud, mud glorious mud
Nothing quite like it for cooling the blood 🎵
Cheers Si ✌
Somehow I knew you'd be a brilliant punt.er 😨😈😇👍👍
Hi si just watched this video again as it made me laugh.no one could ever call you a stick in the mud.more like a stuck in the mud.ah.I thought a couple of years ago a kayak would be an awsome way of getting to those places that werent easy to walk to.Think of all that luck in that muck.happy hunting.x
What no ordinance! Nice video Si
Haha, thankfully not this time mate!
Hi Chill Bill we like your channel as well!
So cool!!
I would love to go mudlarking with you guys :)
Hello Si Finds, A muddy day indeed but lots of fun too. I wonder if that piece you found with the hole you were asking about might be an insulator from early electrical works. The wire would go into the grove and be wired in through the hole. Thanks for a great adventure. Sailing on the mud was truly a learning experience and looked like good a good work our as well. Peace Bor! DaveyJO in Pa.
Daveyjo Weaver Yes I think you’re right about the insulator and many others have said the same so that’s one mystery solved. Thanks for watching!
Nice finds!
Looks a bit dangerous but fun
Nice..Simon has developed a new type of 'Boat Dance'!
Tom Shively 😂 🚣♂️
Well a useful spade & pickaxe & a useful teacup for when your work is done.
Muddy muddy. Well done, Si.
Tob2n Cheers Tobias
there is a town here in Arkansas called Oil Trough. Its name is from the time people brought bears by river to have them rendered down for their oil. Long long time ago.
Definitely MUDlarking, Thank You.
Cool video Simon your video at 11:30 is a ceramic insulator buddy GL&HH Simon
The big man metal detecting Thanks dude! Lots of folk saying that so that’s great you think so too. Cheers GL&HH big man!
What a good laugh 😂
Amazing these things have survived this long must be awesome to find
Beautiful little ink pot.
Come on, England!!!!
Do like the history of the buildings around thats great.
The Temperance movement was quite big in Britain in Victorian times. There were lots of Temperance bars around the country selling non alcoholic drinks, root beers and cordials, so I guess there had to be a Temperance brewery too. You've probably found this out by now but here you go.. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temperance_movement_in_the_United_Kingdom
I hate to be morbid (and I've watched a few dozen of your videos and other than Dead Man's Island, I've never seen mention of it)... but.. I have to ask.. Have you or any of your fellow mudlarkers found modern day human remains in your larks? I used to do a lot of geocaching, and it was always in the back of my mind, but thankfully I never happened upon that sortof thing. Lots of dead dogs and deer (I live in rural Oregon, USA) but no dead humans. I really really enjoy your videos, keep them coming! I'm jealous of the amazing history you can find in the mud there.
I found the bottom of a Temperance glass bottle, think it was nothing to do with the Temperance Movement just clever branding for soft drinks company. Memory is poor but think it was from Kent area.
You see, I knew this would happen sooner or later. It wasn't quite as I predicted though. No sharks or crocodiles.
There's still time for that! haha
@@Sifinds You'll need your galvanised welies then. And possibly a pointy stick.
Is the “stopper” an old insulator from early electric line or morse line beside railway perhaps ?
Do you know, it was beneath the railway line, but I thought those insulators were much bigger and made of porcelain... but you could well be right! Thanks for your input!
Si-finds yes your right they did tend to be porcelain, so how would you go about finding out what it is if nobody can help you? Just interested in your sleuthing process 😊
@@garyenglish7295 Hi Gary, if the object is old enough (over 300 years), or I suspect as such, i will take it to the Museum of London to show the FLO (Finds Liaison Officer). If they suspect it's something worth investigating they will send it round their experts to gain an identification. Some things however, will always remain a mystery. But we try our best to get an answer within the Mudlarking/metal detecting community...
Si-finds hi again Simon, that is really interesting,as I’m what you might call “eyes only digger “ I have spent a lot of my working life having to hand digging for one job or another, over that time I collected numerous items from bottles to stoneware pots to coins , all of which I gave away last year to various people who will display them or to use in schools which very pleased about ,However I have kept one thing which I would discibe as a.small
Si-finds sorry got cut off there what I was going to say is that I kept a small bead ,I don’t know why but I always promised myself I would try to find it’s age ,I’ve always had the feeling it is old but as yet failed to follow up on this, so what would you do first put a picture on the net and ask for help as I suppose I would hate to take up an experts time to find out my “feeling” is wrong and it’s a piece of nonsense
Three young lady still playing in the mud! Still trying to play paper boats as well! 😂😂😂
Meant lads no lady's. Sorry
Jeriann Roberts lol
There are black swans in Dawlish too xx
The stopper/plug looking thing, to me it loks like a type of electrical insulator
People 'took the pledge' to abstain from alcohol, my parents included. Temperance bars would have sprung up to counteract the gin palaces. This bottle would probably have contained something similar to ginger beer or dandelion and burdock.
Hobart makes industrial sized restaurant equipment - when referring to the big restaurant mixers we just called them Hobarts.
Cool!
Hobart makes most of the deli slicing machines you see everywhere here in the US
Temperance brewery must have made soft drinks instead of something with alcohol. Just my guess. If I ever get to mudlark my top Wish finds are an ink well. I just love the pork pie wells ! A glass stopper or vulcanite, I'm not fussy. And a pipe bowl. Hopefully a piece of some thing blue and white pottery. Or shard of slip ware. Love seeing your videos as they are probably as close to the Thames as I will ever get. 😉
terese lapree Thanks Terese. Maybe one day you’ll make it over here. If not, why not go river hunting near you, you never know what you might find!?
Si-finds I grew up on a river actually. Spent most of my 18 years in that river! As soon as I could venture off on my own. Found only new stuff that fell out of boats. Canoes mostly. Or things tubers lost. ( a tuber is a person that floats down the river on an over inflated truck inner tube. Very relaxing and fun) found lots of fishing tackle from the sinkers to full poles with reels. Cameras, wallets, jewelry ( mostly junk but a couple real rings) all manner of clothing from socks and underware to t shirts and shorts. Plenty of bottles and cans. Some never opened. Glasses, sun glasses, tools, shoes usually only one. That was over 40 years ago now.
Current times the river is so abused by litter that groups make at least two trips a year to pull trash out. Covering the miles of river that wind its way through our county. Approximately 30 miles. They pick a stretch each year. It's too long to get it all picked in one day. They haul out tons!
Maybe some day I will find a place better suited to mudlark here. Until then I enjoy watching you and Nicola.
"Obi Wan CANOEbie!!.." 😁😆
haha
Nice
Found you thanks to Tideline Art ! Awesome
Welcome to the channel!
I found that video good, funny to you rowing and going nowhere. Simon l have left you a message on that little garnet site of yours. Can you please view it and convo back please when you get a chance. I do hope that not all the garnets are gone. Until next time. See ya.
Janice Cooper from Melb, Australia.
I thought that said “bear crease “ for one horrifying moment!
It looked like s big pill laying there. Omg😜
Think you need a 4 wheel drive kayak Si
GL&HH. Mate 🏴👍🏻
Great idea! or an amphibiyak!
That is some seriously nasty looking mud! Yuck Muck!
You looked like a clock hand tick- tock... You should not have eaten that last scone with your morning breakfast! The stopper is actually a type of electrical resistor for poles and houses. The wires go through the top holes and wrap around the top. Looks like so much fun!
Mary Degenkolb Thanks Mary, I was thinking resistor, but wasn’t convinced. Now I am. Thanks! Yes it was fun!
So coconut shell halves are how a 5 ounce swollow carrys a 1 pound coconut.

Maybe I missed any bit about when you shot this video???? No way did you have such sunshine a few days ago in the UK 🤷🏻♂️
Great interesting vid - thanks
SandMan Jono No this was shot in Sept ‘18, only just got around to editing it!
Si-finds thanks for clarifying- keep the vids coming 👍🏻
W.A. Willison made cordial, mineral water, ginger beer and horehound beer (a herbal non-alcoholic ale) at 22 Eastney Street Greenwich from at least 1910 into the 1950s. These alcohol-free products fit in with the 'London SE Temperance Brewery' name on the bottle
twitter.com/GreenwichHour/status/1165301419185852417
There was an establishment in Toquerville, Utah that produced that, or an identical bottle, that had originally made wine. When the Temperence movement swept the USA, they were forced to discontinue, but....they made a brew with grain and if they were patient, it would turn alcoholic very quickly. However, the overseers didn’t reveal this to any of their customers (yeah, right lol). So their brew never suffered closing of their doors, infact, when their brew was changed to a ‘wholesome grain’ brew it was touted to be beneficial even for women and children! Imagine what a ‘pick me up’ that would have been back then! Wives were told they could complete their arduous task of house cleaning for the day with energy to spare lol! No kidding! Side note: my family still owns that old granary and it’s still standing! Wish I could post a picture of that grand old rock building. So that’s it for the US version of this bottle.
Si, yu constantly amaze me with your tenacity and keen talent. You’ve got a solid admirer here! Glad yu want to preserve our history. It is soo important to do before it’s lost to us forever.
Thanks Deb, all that is so interesting - thanks for sharing! Feel free to tweet me any pics on Twitter @sxsi. Yes always on the hunt for interesting places to hunt. Most of the time the fun is the hunt, not necessarily what I find, but I do get lucky more often than not, and there's good stories in the most mundane of finds - so i'll keep on hunting, and filming of course.
There is a W.A.Wilson glass firm in America with 170 years of history, the founding member was or came from English Quaker parents in 1800 but they seem to have specialized in flat glass and no mention of liquid refreshments...
david perkins Thanks David, however the name is WILLSON - 2 ‘L’s. Might be a typo on the bottle?
We used to get beard grease for our boots to waterproof them. And they still use real bear fat or grade to rub on native hair.
There were Temperance Bars where you could drink non-alcoholic 'health drinks' such as Dandelion and Burdock, 'Blood Tonic' and Sarsaparilla. I wonder if Willson's Temperance Brewery could be a 'brewery' which bottled these kind of health drinks?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temperance_bar
Well they say mud is good for your skin Si. lol
Well did a little googling of the name Willson.
It’s an older form of Wilson
Apparently most are in Guernsey over there.
A lot of them came to the America’s. Some were Loyalists and moved to Canada during the revolution. Looks like the ones that stayed in US did well for themselves. Saw several buildings and endowments with that spelling
Well endowed people then?
Si-finds 😂🤣 maybe I should have worded that differently?
