For anyone who is wondering, just called US department of State this morning (2/21/23) to ask if notarization is needed and it is NOT needed. Just mail the form, the background check, $20 money order and self addressed return envelope, turn around time 8 weeks as of now.
I was literally just going to ask that question, thank you! The website seems to indicate you do need it 🤷
Hi Isabella, just wondering if you got your FBI background check back with the apostille. If so, how long did it take?
Requesting the apostille is a difference process. I have a different video on that.
It is awesome and very informative. But I am still confused about notarizing it before submitting it. 😮
THANK YOU

Thank you so much. I just decided to attempt to get my residency for the DR. I have a checklist from the Miami consulate but they haven't granted me an appointment. I'm just going to proceed and just show up one day after I gather the information from the checklist.
Great Job explaining the Apostille process!
This video is great. Thank you so much for your time and effort.

THANK YOU very much for explaining this clearly, specifically, and unambiguously. You are my new best friend.

Thank you so much, you save me a lot of time. I tried to contact TSG to ask if it need to be notarized but your video answered my question.

This is a great video and I appreciate the work you're doing to make these bureaucratic processes more accessible to people who need this information.
Just in case you haven't already thought about this: you may want to be careful about displaying a personal check (with your account number visible in glorious 4K) in a public video. Cheers!
Thanks! Noted 👍
Thank-you so much for explaining the process.

Hi Parviz, thank you so much for the time in making this video, as well as your video on how to get the FBI background check.
I have one question, if I am looking to get an apostille for a background check for myself and two family members. Can I mail out one DS-4194 form for the three of us (along with one check for $60, one return envelope, and the three separate background check documents), or do I need to mail each form and background check document separately (with three separate checks and return envelopes)?
Thanks for this video It's very clear and useful. One question. From the Dept of State website, I see that a certification of the notarization by the Secretary of State may be needed. Am I getting this right?.
Thanks man, really usefull
My pleasure. 👍
Thank you for the video! I was wondering if you need an original copy of the background check for it to get apostilled or if just printing the emailed one if fine?
Hi! Such a helpful and clear video! Thank you. One question though, Does the FBI Background check need to be notarized before it can be apostilled?
no
Thanks for the information! Very helpful! What information needs to go on the check besides the amount of $20USD? What should we put in the "Pay to the order of" field?
Also...does a money order work, instead of a check?
The exact payment instructions are on the DS 4194.
Thank you so much!!!!!
You're welcome.
Great video! Thanks! Quick question: The first blank space on the form as for SERVICE NUMBER. Do I leave that blank? Or what do I need to write there? And I am assuming that the date the form asks for is the date we fill it. Is that correct? Thanks again!
hey, did you ever figure this out? i have the same question
Hi thanks for your video. Is there any way to expedite the process in case we need the authentication before the 6 weeks?
THANK YOU!
You’re welcome.
Any suggestions for capturing worn off fingertips that cannot be read at the USPS FBI biometrics locations? Also, on a self addressed return envelope should we put our address for both TO and FROM?
Thank you!
Thank you for the clear and concise video. This has been very helpful. I have one quick question:
I may use my background check for two different countries, I see that the DS4194 form allows you to list more than one country. Should I simply mail in two copies of my FBI background check and a $40 check?
Thank you so much!!
You're welcome. Correct.
great video! thanks for the information! one question... do i need to send my photocopies of passport and greencard together with the application of apostille of FBI background check??
No
Hi Parviz. Great content and I appreciate you taking the time.
I got one question, Form DS4194 does not have a place to ask for Apostille or Authentication. How do they know which one we want? Is it because we are sending $20 Check?
I'm helping my wife to get her FBI Background Check Apostille and that's the only sticking point.
Your video is by far the easiest to follow on CZcams in this topic.
Authentication and apostille are used interchangeably there. If you fill out the form completely and send with the FBI IHS, you'll get an apostiled FBI IHS returned. Good luck.
@@ParvizMalakouti Amazing. Thanks so much for your help.
Thank you so much for the information, especially about the check! I have one question, in section 5 of the DS 4194 form should I put the estimated amount of 8 dollars or 20 dollars? (in the instruction it says 8 dollars).
It is $20. Also, the US Department of State updated the DS 4194 last month to a newer version. FYI, the newer version now includes the added verbiage of "We do not return documents FedEx and in multiple envelopes." The old version allowed for Fed Ex shipping, but the new one does not. Unfortunately for me, I already sent all my documents to them before they made the change. So, now I am still awaiting a reply from them by using their 'Contact Us' section regarding what will happen to my documents since Fed Ex is what I used to send everything in 7 weeks ago.
$20, as I say in the video.
@ParvizMalakouti Great video! Can I send the request for both myself and for my wife in the same request (filling out one ds4194 with two documents)? I know I would have to write a check for $40 ($20x2). If I can, do I check the box that I am submitting on behalf of someone else (my wife)? I would include one pre-paid UPS envelope for both documents. Thanks!
As Always great presentations dear Parvez,
Quick Q. How can a non US Citizen/non resident person no more living in the states get an FBI background check?
www.malakoutilaw.com/fbibackgroundcheck
Thanks for this excellent video. I had an apostille for my fbi background check report requested back in December, only through a local notary public. It took a total 40 days to get it. The guy said that I got lucky, and that many of his clients have been waiting much longer... up to 3 months. I need another one of these things requested soon, and every notary public I call.. they all mention 8-week to 3 month turnaround time. Paying for a faster option is not an option anymore, because the dept of state doesn't handle these on a first come first serve basis.
Another viewer of yours left a comment, stating that she got hers in 5 weeks as back as Mar-Apr. Which is very similar to my previous experience, too. Maybe different fed documents are handled differently. But what can you say about the common turnaround time is specifically for FBI background check apostilles nowadays? Is it consistently around below the 8-week mark? I'm just trying to get more info to shape my expectations accordingly. Thanks in advance!
I've spoken to the office of authentications several times. They say they give priority processing only to FBI IdHS reports (ostensibly b/c they tend to be time sensitive for requestors). Beyond that, they've not told me they give priority to any other type of document.
They also say that apostille requests sent with a tracking number (as opposed to just stamps alone) are processed a bit faster by their office, having to do with how quickly those requests get from their mail room to the office.
My impression is that your experience was a combination of luck and perhaps quicker than usual processing times right when they had your FBI IdHS. Remember - the processing times fluctuate a lot depending on workflow and their Human Resources. Good luck.
@@ParvizMalakouti Oh, thank you so much for your reply, and finally clarifying this otherwise weird situation. It's good to hear that they indeed prioritize issuing apostilles for FBI background check reports. I understand it may still be longer than desired, nevertheless your explanation makes perfect sense. Believe me, even an 8-week turnaround time would work for me... but most definitely not longer.
One more question if you don't mind. Just to clarify. Requests with a tracking number.... you mean any services like USPS Priority mail and such, that automatically come with tracking numbers, right? That's what I intend to do. And I'll even spring for an overnight delivery. Thanks a lot for your help!
@@mercurymoon905 Correct. Good luck.
I would love to get an update as of now, February 12, 2024. Do I need to notarize before sending the document to be apostiled?
Hello! If I have a translated version do I have to apostille both?
What can I do if I forgot to include the self-addressed envelopes when I sent my packet?
The state department website is saying the process might take 11 weeks. Is that accurate or just a worst case estimate.
The nonlucrative visa for which i am applying for says that it also needs to be translated into Spanish. Where do I get this done and is there a special form?
Hi Parviz, thank you for your video! If I’m applying for a work visa for a company that hired me in another country, does that change the info put on the apostille form? Do I put the company’s contact info or still put my contact info?
I only ask bc the form’s mention of “company” made me a little uncertain.
Hi! I am filling out my form DS-4194, but it asks to put in the tracking number, how can I know this prior to going to the post office? Also, what do I put on "projected cost"
Fyi...Current Wait Time for Apostille & Authentication Services is 11 weeks from receipt of request with proper
documentation.
Do I have to fill out the paperwork online and then print it out or can I fill out with black pen? Because where it says SELECT I am unable to access a drop-down menu and it's printing out with the word SELECT so I am unable to write anything in that space
Great info. Can they still Apostille the background check if it's been over 6 months?
Yes.
what happens when fingerprint characteristics are too low for a reading and after three attempts the FBI issues a rejection letter (stating further attempts of fingerprinting will likely not result in getting a reading). what do countries do for visa/residency in these situations?
Hi. I need a FBI criminal report for Macau that is an APOSTILLE. I sent in the form (ds4194) and received a AUTHENTICATED copy already. The Macau Govt rejected it saying it had to be an Apostille. In your earlier comments you say the US uses the terms 'interchangably' and the ds4194 does not have any specific notice to request an Apostille. So I am confused as to how to request one. Thank you for your help if you can clarify!
Do you have to get the background check notarized first before requesting an apostille?
Fbi background check needed to be notarized before send it to the apostill?
Parviz. Your video took a lot of fear and complication out of this daunting process. I have a few interrelated questions. In the State Dept website it tells you get your document notarized, which you didn't mention at all. Second, what is the Public Notary notarizing? Third, can any public notary in any state notarize the document?
This video is only about how to get the FBI background check (identity history summary) apostilled. There is no public notary process involved. Good luck.
True, notarization doesn't apply to Federal documents, so it's confusing that they would mention it! FYI - On the other hand, notarization applies to documents such as POAs, Affidavits, etc. And even so, these documents will typically require a State level Apostille, obtained by sending it to the Secretary of State office of the state that the Notary is commissioned in. And excellent video by attorney Purvis to explain the Federal background check Apostille process! 👍🏽
Thank you for this video! It's so helpful! I have a quick question: Would it be okay to put an address on the DS-4194 that is different from what is showing on the FBI background check record?
Yes, I also have this question because I am currently located in Brazil and would like it mailed to me directly after being apostilled
Hi, was this fine in the end ? I’m currently in the same situation and I’m about ready to send it to get apostilled
It’s not a problem.
I am out side country of US I received FBI background check, how I can get apostille the FBI background check. As this needs self addressed envelope to …it is not possible to get from outside the US
Hi. Thank you so much for making this video. You make the information so much more accessible and that's really generous of you. I have a question: If I need a FBI Background check that's Apostilled and translated -- do I Apostille it first? Or do I get it translated first? Thank you!
That depends on authority asking you for the FBI background check.
I had a case like that and had to have the document Apostilled first and then the whole thing translated, a certified translation.

Thank you so much for this video. I received my FBI background check in 5 weeks. I sent it in on March 14 and received it on April 22, 2023. I sent it by priority mail. I now need to get an apostille for my US passport. I am confused if I send it to the US Department of State or New York State where I reside. I understand I need to get it notarized in the county I live in but, then is it sent to NY state or the US Department of State? I was wondering if you had any information on this. Thank you
Please clarify.... Did you mean to say that you received an APOSTILLE for your FBI background report in 5 weeks or the report itself? By the way, since you mentioned NY.... I assume you're based on NY. So am I. When I requested an apostille for this kind of report... (in December 2022), it took a total of 40 days to get it even though the notary public had said upfront that it might take up to 3 months. He had no reason to lie, because I was even willing to pay extra to get it asap, but he said it's no use, because based on his experience with other clients.... many clients have had to wait that long and even longer to get an apostille for various fed documents. When I got it that in 40 days, he said that I got lucky. Well, now I need to get another fbi background check report + apostille, but every notary public I've spoken with said that it takes 8-weeks or longer... Have you heard anything like that? I'm now inclined to submit a request for an apostille myself as per this video. I'm just concerned about the turnaround time, because these background check reports are only good for 90 days anyway. I've called many notary public offices; so they can't all be talking out of their butt. They are all quick to point out that it's been a problem since covid times. I just don't know how much of a problem it really is. Some still maintain that it might take up to 3 months. 8 weeks is much more close to your previous experience, as well as mine.
Apostilles from US Dept of State are taking 8 to 12 weeks. Sumner is a busier time so they have an influx during spring/summer and holidays
Which office can send the fbi background check? Is available in every state or its only one office in DC?
I answered this question in the video.
As of today the authentication processing fee is $8, not $6 on the DS-4194... You mention that really it's 20... I am wondering if now it's more in total. It says $8 per document... and that the exact amount it required.
I misspoke in the video on what the mistakenly written number is. It previously said $8 which, of course, is not accurate.
The apostille fee is still $20. Good luck.
Thank you for taking the time to explain the process. One question, does the FBI background check need to be notarized before sending it to be authenticated? Or do we just mail the background check in directly to get apostilled?

If you receive official FBI report in mail and do not open it, then forward this document (unopened) to whichever agency requested it, - an apostilled stamp isn't required... right??
It all depends on what agency or entity is asking you for the report. They decide whether they require or not, based on their regs or law. I I will say the majority of apostille countries asking for an FBI report will not accept an unopened envelope in lieu of the apostille. Good luck.
@@ParvizMalakouti Can't speak for the majority, but in Portugal, it is allowed. - just don't open it. The problem is policies arent law, and each office staff person that creates one makes compliance a slippery slope.
