- Mains water pressure issues on this job, I've never seen an incoming main with this low a pressure in all the years I've been plumbing.
The water company came out and told me to remove the 2 stop taps and replace with 1 to see if that sorts the issue....take a look

Thanks for watching as always…. Part 2 of this coming in a few weeks….
👍👍
Good stuff Mark.
no part 2 yet!??😢
Just a thought, what if when you changed the stopcock, before reconnecting it to the pipe, put a piece of pipe into the stopcock on an elbow and into a bucket. Then open up the stopcock into a bucket with the weir gauge. That way you can see what the flow rate is straight off of the mains. Love the vids as always!
The outside tap is the first tap off after the stoptap… within about 5”……. That’s what the gauge was on so that’s exactly what we have at the stop top
@@MJTiffPlumbing ahhh I see!
what if there is a partial blockage above the stopcock on the tee, pipe into the bucket test would have eliminated that's
P.S best videos out there
My suggestion exactly.
Interesting video Mark. Well done going above and beyond getting in touch with trent water yourself.
On a different issue. Spot on about van visibility getting you more work. Took the number off our plumbers van at traffic lights. He's been doing my plumbing jobs for around 20 plus years..
I’ve always had my vans sign written, as advert sent but also proud of my company and reputation…👍🏼👍🏼
Really enjoyed that, intriguing can't wait for part 2.
Hopefully coming soon 👍🏼
Great stuff Mark! Enjoying the videos….
Thanks Matt 👍🏼👍🏼
Good video Mark. I work for a water company. If the neighbours allow, run a supply off their outside tap, to your customers outside tap. (Remove non return valves if applicable) 👍
Good shout that is👍🏼👍🏼
Gotta love a cliffhanger! I'm going for debris on the upstream side of the stop tap in the path, caused by a repair further up the main. Keep up the good work fella.
Thanks mate….. I’m going on crushed incoming main due to tree routes somewhere🙈🙈
Good to see someone going above and beyond not just taking money and run....great job mark....Old lead / steel main furred up is my guess
Thanks buddy…… I don’t think you will be far off with that guess mate….👌🏼
Great vid very interesting can’t wait for next episode all the best.👍👍👍😎😎😎
Thanks Richard 👍🏼👍🏼
Not exactly the same problem but bought my house last year in the STW area. They told me my water consumption seemed high. To cut a long story short there was a longstanding leak on the MDPE on my side of the boundary box. Massive big up to HMS Hall Mechanical Services of Bromsgrove. All leak detection and moling. Top job at a reasonable price with minimal disturbance to my driveway! Nice guys too
Fair play mate…. And glad you got it sorted with a good firm👍🏼
You never know what each day brings mark, good work as usual, stones in utilities stop cock or in a joint, pieces of tree root actually in the main or a badly rusted and furred up steel main. Looking forward to seeing what it is. Cheers
Thanks mate…. They have history of tree route issues😬
Hi Mark, l work in Northamptonshire. I had a street stopcock that was leaking, a leak in the house that I couldn’t turn off, phoned Anglian Water and gave them the info, along with telling them that a young mum with a newborn lived there. No word of a lie they were there in 20 minutes! Incredible service!
(Their response was quicker than the ambulance I had to phone for the father-in-law the week before!)
Wow that’s amazing speed to get out
Had this a few times here in Jersey. Usually the non return valve at the stop tap in the road failing. Or a collapsed main. Hopefully it'll get sorted for your customer quickly👍
Thanks Lee…. Part 2 soon👍🏼👍🏼
Interesting video. Our street has a low pressure problems, not as bad as yours but you cannot run a tap upstairs with a tap on downstairs. We have complained to our local authority about it but it turns we are at the end of the line from a pumping station 6 miles away. They have to keep head pressure low to reduce leakage until they replace all the pipework. What annoys us more is we can see the main pumping station for the rest of the town from the bedroom window but we are not connected to it. It's so frustrating. Hope to see part 2
I feel for you mate…. And your water rates are no doubt sky high!!!
Found exactly the same the other week whilst fitting a new bathroom. Barely two litres a minutes. Stopcock In the corner of kitchen behind all the units inaccessible plus to top it off all the pipework runs are cpvc. Still waiting on Seven trent to check before I attempt ripping half the kitchen out if unneeded.
Nightmare isn’t it mate
My guess, it’s an old lead drain furring up or crushed due to settlement. Awesome as ever mate👏🏼👏🏼
That’s where my money is going😉
Love it when the the stop tap hole is full of dirt and ants what fun
🤣🤣
Hi Mark, another job requiring some detective work, not sure about the cause of this problem.
Maybe some partial crushing of the pipe restricting flow? An interesting one I’m looking forward to part two.
Fantastic film as always, even a little bit of soldering thrown in, brilliant. Take care, have a great rest of the week, regards, Chris. 👍👍👍
Thanks Chris, hope your keeping well👍🏼👍🏼
I'll take a shot at old pipe getting crushed by a root. Think I would of run a pipe off that new stop tap just to double check the flow after the fix. It's your job though and not mine so plz don't think I'm poking at you with a stick . Really enjoy your vids Mark 👍🏼
Thanks Rich
The outside tap was the first draw off the main from the stop tap, literally 2” away…. That’s what the pressure gauge was on..👍🏼
I’m thinking it’s a root aswell as there’s some big trees about.
I know your not having a pop buddy, I appreciate and Luke constructive comments….. just not the DHC’s that some people put…
your a good man mark i think its the tap in the street all the best mate
Let’s hope so mate…… could be a relative easy fix
I’ve just had united utilities out for low pressure, we get a lot of bursts on the estate, we have cement/asbestos pipes in the ground that always burst, on a recent burst we now have much lower pressure, my plumber assured me we have 12 Bar pressure 😳 anyway they have been out and because of the number of bursts they have dropped the pressure in the estate, mine has gone up, but nothing like it used to be, one of the first questions they asked was “will the toilet cistern fill ok?” So I think they take that bit seriously…..great video as usual Mark
Asbestos pipes😯😯
Great video mate, as usual love watching real world plumbing. Is it possible that there's grit or something partially blocking the stop tap in street ?
Thanks mate, glad you liked it…. Could be, we will soon find out👍🏼👍🏼
If its the old lead pipe from street main yes I reckon it could be squashed or like you say it could be the stop tap on the path whats faulty. It's so frustrating when you go to a job where you have to turn it off on the path and its full of shit especially tarmac pisses me off . It will be interesting to see what it actually is keep us informed mark . Its got to be one or the other I reckon its the tap on the pavement. Interesting video that one mark
Thanks Wayne…. Will be a part 2 soon enough👍🏼👍🏼
Great video as always Mark, if you isolated out in the road with the pressure gauge attached you would see a slow drop on the gauge if there was a leak? Obviously no way of testing for a restriction but you could at least rule out a leak?
Keep up the good work!
Yep good idea that
@@MJTiffPlumbing really surprised you didn't do that ohhhhh
Hey Mark, reckon they will change outside stop valve ‘OSV’. Like others have said poss debris sitting main side of stop tap reducing flow ? Could also be the ferrule attached to the main. Is their main supply lead? May need a relay. Great video as always .
Thanks mate, they are out soon to sort it so we will see
Another way to test for a burst between the outside main and house is turn main off in street put a pint glass of water under the cold tap,if there is a burst/hole in pipe it will slowly suck water out of glass.
Yep good shout that…..👍🏼
It won’t work if there is are any NRV’s on the supply.
Great upload, very good of you call the water board, I wonder if they would have been the same if the customer rang up??
Yep, I wondered the same thing mate
@@MJTiffPlumbing yeah bet it’s the outside ST. Looks like the original. Severn Trent really should have replaced that outside ST with a meter box from the beginning, so that they can at least screw in a standpipe and take a flow and pressure reading from it, before palming it off as a private issue.
Great video, very interested to see what the issue is, my guess is a issue with the stop tap not opening fully. I’ve been back and forth loads deciding if I should have ago at setting up a Chanel myself but showing what issues I have in a commercial setting and after watching you and chatting back at installer show I think I may take the plunge. What video software do you use to edit I’ve looked and there are so many and all have trials and so on I would rather go off a recommendation from someone who uses it regular. If you don’t mind could you let me know, thanks
Do it buddy…. Would love to see some commercial work.
I use Adobe Rush…. Download the app, it’s great once you get the hang of it
Good video, reminds me of a very similar problem with my mother in laws in Worksop, changed internal stopcock with little improvement, water authority changed stop cock in street which was original 1960’s, problem solved.
That would be the perfect solution 👌🏼👌🏼
Mint vid.
Real life job
Wanted to ask how you go about charging customer although you haven’t fixed the issue?
Thanks mate….. still charge for time your there and swapping stop tap. Communication with customer is key in jobs like this
I’ve seen small bits off debris clog up in cold mains elbows and tees could have checked it straight off the stop tap before connecting back in to eliminate any blockage in that tee or fittings before the taps
The outside tap is the first tap off the main and it’s right next to the connection (within 4”)…. Was what the gauge was connected to….. 👍🏼👍🏼
Well done for going the extra mile for the customer Mark, very interested to see what the problem is. 👍
Thanks mate 🤦🏻♂️🙏🏼
Thanks for your in interesting videos. What paste do you use for compression fittings. I like the brush it comes with so you don't get your fingers dirty
Plumb blue paste from plumbase👍🏼👍🏼
Can't find such a item when I googled it. What does it say on the tin?
Aww As you said that what think.
I've got something like that in my house and strangely it's only happened, and getting worse , since I've had a water meter fitted.
Very strange that buddy
My guess it's a piece of stone stuck in the outside stoptap i got that on a job before but in the internal stoptap in the house the pressure and flow was similar to what you came across so took it off and a stone was caught in it . I'd also do is stick a mini Milwaukee compressor on the main line in the cupboard to test out to the outside stoptap turned off put to 2 bar and see if there's a drop there.
Keep an eye out tonight as we have part 2😉
Has there been a burst water main in the vicinity? Possibly a restriction in the ferrule off the main or the external stopcock.
Definitely some form of of restriction , an underground prv or check valve maybe, interesting to find out 👍
Hopefully getting sorted end of next week…. Part 2 coming soon
You might want to check the pressure at the new stop cock , could be problems with the house service itself not the main feed .. You've probably thought of this .. Enjoy your channel Hi from down in Australia Cheers
Hey buddy
The outside tap is the first tap off the main and it’s right next to the connection (within 4”)…. Was what the gauge was connected to…..
Glad you like the content👍🏼👍🏼
Had the same problem a couple years back. Turns out ot was a stopcock hidden behind a Rayburn causing the problem. Good old welsh water found it after the customer was adamant there was no internal stopcock. Like you a couple of weeks ago, I shouldnt have listened to the customer
Always check…🙈🙈
From my experience, the emergency stop tap is gone , when you reopen, it look 👀 like it it’s to easy to turn back on not much resistance . Usually it’s a linkage insert crossed threaded, opens halfway. Same example like a full turn cartridge with a rubber washer inside a tap.
Yer it was very easy to turn back on….😬😬
I got low water pressure as well, mine is roughly 4L a min downstairs and 10L upstairs.
Any ideas what this could be?
The stopcock is a old gate valve, do you think thats worth replacing?
Always worth trying the simple stuff first
Good sr
👍🏼👍🏼
I'm gonna hazard a guess at there's another stop tap on the other side of the house under the floor somewhere that'll be furred up. Potentially relocated the kitchen from the street side to rear of house before current owners moved in
They have been in the house for the last 40years, nowt like that mate…. Thank god🤣
Could you of attached a drain down hose to the new stop tap and tested the flow rate with the pipe outside before you connected it into the pipework at the property?
Just to see if it’s definitely from that point that the flow is poor.
If it’s good flow to the stop tap then it’s an issue with the internal pipes feeding the rest of the house.
Just a thought 🤔
The outside tap was the first draw off the main from the stop tap, literally 2” away…. That’s what the pressure gauge was on..👍🏼
Out of interest Mark
Although too late but did you test the water directly from the new stop cock adding a flexi hose into a bucket?
I had very similar and found that a newly fitted kitchen had kinked the 15mm mains a foot higher up behind a unit.
Just a thought always expect the unexpected plumbing is all about problem solving as you know.
A good morning watch before tracking out in the jungle of Birmingham.
Nice video
The outside tap is the first tap off the main and it’s right next to the connection (within 4”)…. Was what the gauge was connected to….. 👍🏼👍🏼
If there’s a garden pond, I’m going for back siphonage and a blockage with pond debris. Courtesy of no check valve on the outside tap.
No pond 🙈
Litres per minute is volume not pressure,or it was when I was at school, how many bar is the pressure, poor response by the water company, they should be able to be there within 48hrs, it's not like they are repairing many leaks, great videos, keep up the good work, enjoy your videos.
Pressure is shown on the bit in the video with the pressure gauge😉😉….. litres per minute is flow rate.
As next door has good pressure the problem most likely lies in the service pipe. May have to have a new service pipe to the property. What the service pipe is made off may well have a bearing on it too.
Yep I’m saying a crushed main somewhere
@@MJTiffPlumbing probably is, so a job for a gang with a mole and permission from highways to dig up the pavement.
When we extended our old place in St Albans, I discovered our incoming main was barrel, so while the place was a disaster zone anyway, I had a new plastic incoming .main put in .. the original stop tap inside had to be moved anyway. Within months, the house 2 doors down also had to have a new main because the barrel underground split
The gurgling noise in that underground pipe when you removed those stop cocks deffo seems to be an underground burst/leak,water board always try n get out of everything.
My first thought was a leak, and that’s when I first went to look I advise the customer to get the water company to check….. they said no leak🤷🏼♂️
You hit the nail on the head, incoming main has been crushed . It looked like a viking Johnson fitting just above or in the floor which tells me main is lead or black mains water plastic. The pipe has been kinked . Looked like a new gas main right next to mains water, could have happened when they did that.
Could also be shit in the viking johnson fitting.
Best solution dig up outside around main stopcock or take out body of stopcock and see what pressure your getting then you will know if mains pipe is fucked. Had exactly same problem.
Thanks one for the water compmay to take a look at next week👍🏼👍🏼
Try searching a non return valve or just a thought is the house using a water softener if so the resin might be gone. Just a thought
Non return valve wouldn’t cause that to be honest, and no water filter in the property….. hopefully the incoming mains stoptap outside
Hi why did you just check the water pressure from the new stopcocks with a temporary connection to out side just to check pressure from the outside stop cock in the road to house
The outside tap is the first tap off the main and it’s right next to the connection (within 4”)…. Was what the gauge was connected to….. 👍🏼👍🏼
Be interesting to know how this gets resolved😁
Part 2 will be out once the water company are on site…… we all want to know 🤣
How do you work the filming into pricing your jobs? Do you discount on jobs paid hourly for time spent setting up cameras and getting shots ect?
Takes a few minutes to film some bits and others just leave the camera running…. Probably adds about 10mins onto a job 👍🏼
Had this exact issue the other week, turned out to be a burst main between external and internal stop tap
Yep that is what I got the water company to check for before doing this work..👍🏼👍🏼
@@MJTiffPlumbing luckily for me it was pretty easy to tell as meter was going like the clappers so just turned off stop tap inside to prove it was before that.
Hi, i cant find Part 2 please help.
A few videos after this one buddy….. interesting result
could there be a crushed lead pipe feed to the house
Thanks where my money would be….
My bet is faulty stop tap in the road outside, done a couple live, right laugh, so it’s Speedo’s and wellies I reckon. 👍🚽 the joys of plumbing.
Indeed mate. We love it really🤣
Does sound like an issue with the outside stop tap or as you said the main coming into the property bit ridiculous that water company cant come til the 26th will all their staff you and me have to go to an emergency almost straight away
Yep I and this was filmed a week or so ago…. They did say they may just call by earlier🤷🏼♂️
Could be a buried stop valve under the ground somewhere…… have had this before
The old “random stoptap” 🤦🏻♂️
I want to know what it is now. You must make video on the resulting answer. Because there obviously will be a resolve.( I'm going to say internal blockage on the incoming main).
There will be a part 2…. I’ve pencilled in to be there when the water board turn up😉😉
And if it's within the boundaries of the house. Then it's not down to the water board. Its down to the customer.
My money's on the stopcock in the road.
Wouldve connected next doors outside tap to customers outside tap tho, just to see ......
Yer a few people have said that🙈
@@MJTiffPlumbing just in case there's a bit of rubber from that old stopcock lodged in that first tee 🤬🤣
I had that once water board fitted a new main stop tap in the pavement sorted it found it wasn't opening properly
Yep that could be the best solution if it’s that👍🏼👍🏼
I would have put a washing machine valve on the main before replacing the stopcock, that would have let you discount any problem internally.still looking like a problem on that incoming main
The outside tap is the first tap off the main and it’s right next to the connection (within 4”)…. Was what the gauge was connected to….. 👍🏼👍🏼
Iron service pipe, changed loads of them because of the same problem
👍🏼👍🏼
Once seven Trent have come out and ruled out a problem with their stop tap, it will be down to the home owner, can see a new supply being dug in around the garden, nightmare
Yep…. This is what I think may happen unfortunatly. Let’s hope it’s there stoptap in the street😉
I put in a new 25mm mdpe pipe as we was on a shared lead pipe approx 15mm serving us and next door. Flow was pants. I dug the trench a meter or just over deep, ducted / insulated it and cored through the kitchen 550mm concrete reinforced floor. Used philmac fittings and 22mm copper, 22mm stop tap, reduced to 15mm drain off. Then 15mm onto internal plumbering. Cost approx £250 was well chuffed with the results. Flow is over 20L per min. Used plastic soil pipe as ducting. I got fed up of waiting for plumbers to do some of the work, so watched plenty of CZcams and did it myself lol 😆
@@waynenixon729 fair play to you mate, the work is in digging the trench, did a few years ago when I was an apprentice, but most plumbers don’t want the manual labour.
@@paulsmith2931 So true! Even then they only dig it to about 500mm not the minimum 750mm. I saw James from Plumber parts channel attempt lol. The regs might be a bit over kill as the lead main was not far off 550mm deep. In the whole under the foundations 1950s 550mm reinforced with rebar was a soil pipe, gas and electric cable. Ducted under the soil pipe and up into the kitchen which I hired a core drill for £50. Sealed with CT1 and a rubber top on the plastic duct soil pipe. Used a mdpe to copper 22mm connection kit. Seven trent said I had made a better job then some called professionals. I'm starting a plumbing course at colledge next month. CZcams like PB plumber, Allen Heart, Doctor pipe, Nick Taylor, urban plumbers and Mark from this channel ect cant thank enough. Such a great bunch, always there for advice. Keep up with the videos, can't wait to see what was causing the problems.
Old propertys can suffer with low pressure due to passivation layer buid up inside lead water main. Get a mole machine in and run a new main in from stopcock in the road! Remember the services within the boundary of the property are the home owners responsibility not the utility company!!!
Yep that’s a last resort once we know the stop cock isn’t an issue, would be a very expensive “try” if it’s just the stoptap in the street👍🏼
I reckon it will be either be a faulty roadside stopcock that has broken off and not opening fully, or gravel lodged in the roadside stopcock from other recent work done nearby...............
Be interested to see what it is...................
Hopefully 👍🏼👍🏼
Either a flattened main by way of tree roots etc or a big dirty snot of crap in the stop tap in the street….
Yep I’m going for a squashed main somewhere
Had it at my house jumper in the external stop tap was stuck. Banged my key with a hammer and perfect
Now that would be perfect
Great result👌🏼
I am going to say rust in an iron service pipe reducing the internal diamater significantly and so reducing the flow rate.
Yep good shout……. Will let you know👍🏼👍🏼
You mentioned a damp basement. Maybe a leak on the incoming pipework?
Severn Trent ruled out a leak on there first visit….. but you never know 👍🏼
@@MJTiffPlumbing but did they check inside the house / basement?
i don't think it's crushed because i think you would see muddy water in that case. my guess is the valve at the road is failing
Yep good point that
Probably jumper stuck on the main stopcock in the street even though it's fully opening . Had one on a block of flats ground floor with little to no water coming in the property off a 28mm main with 45litres a min & 4bar pressure at source. Plumber charged the punter 1500qiid to install a break tank & 2 sets of pumps one being a twin inlet pump the other a salamander boost . She called me in. Rang the water board they shut off the flats I took out the stopcock tk the flat which was less than 4" from the incoming 28mm main , broke the stopcock in half & the jumper was stuck in the seating . I removed it & stuck a new body in the guts of the stopcock. Turned it back on hey presto all working . I ripped out all the pumps & tanks & reconnected the pipework. Happy customer.
So like others have said I would of run straight off that stopcock in the cupboard a hose into the gully outside & checked what you had , even though you said the outside tap was straight off it. As we all know never assume !!
Also that sink tap probably has M10 flexys with check valves which would affect any flow rate/ performance. So I would never go by that type of sink tap. I appreciate you went upstairs & checked the basin taps.
Out of interest you didn't say what the incoming main was made of as it looked quite chunky below the stopcock, possibly a leadloc ! If it was galvanised then most deffo rusted up.
Again if it's lead could be scaled up!!! I'm hazarding a guess they're not on a water meter & probably pay a set amount to the water board as opposed to being meter rated.
I'm going for jammed washer in the main stopcock . Did they have the issue before the new kitchen was fitted ??? Or only in recent months!
Slowly got worse over the period of around 10months….. hence me thinking leak on the main so got them to call the water company, the property has large trees around it so my money is on a crushed main at some point.
Personally I would have tested the pressure straight after the new stopcock by connecting some plastic to it into a bucket to male 100% sure the problem is before the stopcock.
The outside tap is the first tap off the main and it’s right next to the connection (within 4”)…. Was what the gauge was connected to….. 👍🏼👍🏼
We had a issue with our water pressure it was the main pipe coming coming off the stop cock being to small for the water flow
Yep sometimes they put small bore pipe in🙄
If it’s a burst underground pipe, then you’d hear it. The old screwdriver on the Stopcock trick👍👍
Get your ear on your Stopcock Key Mark👍👍
My money is on the Stopcock under the pavement being faulty💷💷💷
Yep I think that’s a safe bet.
Water company came and checked for leaks and said there was non
Could it be the water meter?
No meter on this house buddy….. guessing a pipe issue
Tree roots are a building nightmare
Indeed mate….. and this property has history of it
Usual high standard of customer care Mark. It'd be great to see what caused the problem on your next video.
Thanks buddy… will be doing a follow up when we know what’s going on
The Severn Trent mains tap is failing. Then the lead supply has a split and is not crushed. Also after stop cock a double check valve should be fitted to stop backwater
Hopefully it is the mains tap failing.
DCV after the incoming mains tap isn’t a reg….
Ray here in Ireland Mark, just curious what happened with 2nd part of video follow up well past the 16 days that severn trent said they would sort their end of the problem, cheers Mark!👍
Defo outside stopcock...when I seen you put water key on ,that end turns a normal internal stopcock on and off..not an underground fitted stopcock
Stopcocks in the street in Warwick as it’s an old town all just have a brass stop cock style head…. And they are all crap
@@MJTiffPlumbing belfast different mate 🤣
Main is outside on a kerb on a main road.Possiblt a truck or heavy vehicle causing a collapse

Hahahaah….. years of practice
Mark possibly connect staight from stopcock a pipe and check water flow possible non return or check valve after stopcock which in not visible JWA THE 75 YEAR OLD PLUMBER.

possibly lead main in coming crushed ?
Yep I think so👍🏼
Wtf man, what's with the cliffhanger!
Hahahaa…… waiting for the water company on the 26th…. Part 2 coming soon

The outside tap is the first tap off the main and it’s right next to the connection (within 4”)…. Was what the gauge was connected to….. 👍🏼👍🏼
@@MJTiffPlumbing I just looked at the video again and there is a tee going to the outside tap and the rest of the property, I know it would be unlikely that the tee is partially blocked but how many times have you come up against the unexpected also it eliminates another possible cause. Looking forward to the sequel
Blocked on mains laid pipes

Can't speak for Severn Trent, but 10% of Thames Water is owned by "chinese business interests". A major reservoir hasn't been built since 1991?? (if memory serves correct) and the population has risen significantly. The fact that so much water is provided on poorly maintained infrastructure, with numerous leaks, also gives cause for concern.

Definitely restriction between the road and internal stop tap, connecting a flexi to the top of the stop tap and running into a bucket would have proved the issue is before the internal stop tap, will be interesting to see what it is

Not impressed with the water authorities time scale for looking at a customers supply where there is basically no supply. Bet they chase people to court quicker when they don't get their £750.
