Brooke Shields played Erica (The crazy stalker). She was a supermodel/actress back in the day. The man who got Phoebe the singing gig is Chris Isaacs, who was a very popular musician known for his falsetto voice.

Also yeah, the moment Monica and Rachel almost laughed. I'm pretty Courtney and Jennifer almost broke the characters, but it actually fits perfectly into the whole scene 😅

The two episodes originally aired immediately after the Super Bowl that year. It's always a big thing to be the show that gets to follow the Super Bowl, so it was hyped up like crazy... and probably also why they used so many big guest stars for the 2 episodes, like Rachel's mom (actress Marlo Thomas), the guy who hired Phoebe (singer Chris Isaak), the monkey house bribery guy (the actor who voices Homer Simpson), and the crazy stalker fan (popular model and 80's/90's actress Brooke Shields). That's also why they call it "the one after the Super Bowl." 😊 If memory serves, I'm pretty sure they aired both episodes back to back that night.
People have been talking about how Friends is dated and not "politically correct", and it is in some ways. But the lesbian wedding episode broke barriers when it aired in 1996. It was the third gay marriage on TV and the FIRST lesbian wedding ever on TV. But you can still see how different it is compared to today. They didn't show the ceremony and Carol & Susan didn't even kiss. But again, we have to remember that even in the 90s things were so different. Gay marriage wasn't even legalised in New York until 2011.
A fun fact though is that NBC expected a flood of phone complaints for portraying a lesbian wedding but they 'only' received 11 calls. Another fun fact is that the woman officiating the wedding is Candace Gingrich, an LGBT rights activist and sister to conservative Congressman Newt Gingrich.
Matthew Perry ad-libbed (as he often did) Chandler throwing water at Joey and saying he forgot to close the toilet lid. You can clearly see Jennifer Aniston can't keep a straight face in that scene.
And as a soap fan myself I can tell you that people like Erica really exist. They can't seem to separate the character from the actor. I remember Larry Hagman who played J.R. on Dallas once talked about when someone came up to him on the street and shouted "J.R. how could you do this to Sue Ellen?!" It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.
The woman who plays Rachel's mom, is an actress by the name of Marlo Thomas. She was primarily famous in the 70's, starring in her own show "That Girl". Later, she and her father, Danny Thomas (another famous actor,) started the cancer hospital for kids called "St. Jude's".
I always liked Marlo Thomas. As for her father, he had his own show back in the late 50s-early 60s called "Make Room for Daddy," later "The Danny Thomas Show," and starred in movies during the late 40s and early 50s. Also, he founded St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
As a VERY fashionable young Manhattanite, she was basically Rachel circa 1970.
And in a future episode - the one where they all play football - we actually see Phoebe wearing a That Girl t-shirt.

Lisa Kudrow is a terrific mimic,. she imitates a couple of other people on the show, and she's always hilarious. Her impression here of an elderly lifelong New Yorker was pitch perfect.

Brooke Shields was so good as crazy Erica. Matthew Perry just jumped in to do that last one, that wasn't scripted which is probably why Jennifer Aniston is totally breaking behind him. She is definitely the one who you can see doing this the most often

A lot of people like to rip on Ross, but when push comes to shove, as you’ve already seen, he probably does more unselfish things in important situations than any other character

These epsiodes and the next have some great guest stars. I won't blow it for the next, but in this batch with have "That Girl" (I've never actually seen that one) as Rachel's mom.. Brooke Shields was/is a big super model/actor in this time and earlier. She even had her own show called Suddenly Susan (totally fun). And Then lastly we have Chris Isaak. He is of course a superb singer. He sings Wicked Game, which everyone seems to know.. Great song. He was also a great actor in some things I remember. He was in From The Earth to the Moon.. an HBO series about the moon landing and the lead up to it and beyond. He played Ed White, which if you know your moon landing history, died in Apollo 1 on the launch pad with Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee. You should react to that!!

When this episode originally aired, this was the most famous and white hot the cast of Friends were. The absolute apex of their fame. The second episode was an hour long episode that aired right after the Superbowl and had the most viewership. They were more famous than movie stars at this point. One newspaper headline reviewing this particular episode had the caption: 'Friends make-out with famous people, rock stars and movie stars.' They predicted Friends had reached their peak and would drop in quality immediately and be off the air in three years. They were only off by eight years, their peak arguably was season five and they never jumped the shark. SPOILER: This series rocks.

Episode 2x11 was pretty progressive at the time. I don't think gay marriage was legalized yet when that episode was aired. I might be wrong though.

It was confusing for me that they had a non legal wedding. They certainly should have mentioned it was not legal.
Also on related note I saw online once that someone (who was foreigner and had come here for that) had a gay marriage here in Finland in mid 00s. It didn’t become legal here until 2017. You could register your partnership but that’s not exactly like marriage. The person never responded to me, so apparently there is a couple out there who is not married but thinks they are!

Ross can be the most selfless, supportive guy at times. Other times he destroys any brownie points he might otherwise have earned by doing stupid sh!t too, but at least he gets his moments. This episode came out early in the struggle for marriage equality in the USA.
It's so funny seeing a younger person react to these not knowing who the celebrity guest stars are. Really shows how much pop culture has moved on but also makes me feel old as hell lmao I loved Chris Isaac when I was younger. His song 'wicked game' was a massive hit.

Friends is one of my favorite series ever, but I have to admit the first few seasons are a bit weak, can't wait for it to reach S3-4+, in my opinion 7 and 8 have to be the best.

You gotta remember this was a long time ago, gay marriage wasn't legally recognized, a lot of same sex couples didn't bother with a wedding or a commitment ceremony. That being said, I went to the wedding of my high school girlfriend when she married her wife back in the 90s, and I had a blast. 😁
Also gotta remember: politics being what they are now, such legality is precarious. Please safeguard such where possible.

Just like Rachel's mum i went from my mums house, to my Dads house (they split up when i was 16 and i was at the age where my mum and i were constantly arguing 😅 also i didn't want my dad to be alone and my mum had my sister and brother, we only moved around the corner anyway) and then moved in with my now fiance at 18, im 35 now and have lived in the same little village since i was 2 😮 😅 I've been with my fiance ever since and that was 18yrs ago!!! 😊 I've never looked back ❤❤❤ XxXxX

For all the ways Friends hasn't aged well when it comes to LGBTQ stuff, I give them credit for what they DID do. And I stand that, for the time it came out, they pushed the limits. It was one of the first on-air LGBTQ weddings and some states didn't even allow the episode to be broadcast in their area. The wedding officiant was played by Candace Gingrich, who is LGBTQ themselves, and is the half sibling of Republican Newt Gingrich who has always been very anti-LGBTQ. So getting Candace was sort of a big push against the political climate at the time.
