Baseball weighs what, 5 oz or 140grams approx, doing 90-100mph. I don't really care how much padding is in your facemask, taking that to the chin, or anywhere in the face really is gonna ring your bell. The thing that gets me is the complete lack of ability to protect yourself. Your expecting the ball in the glove, foul tip 2-3 feet in front of you, I'm not sure you'd even see the ball coming.
As a catcher in a competitive league and high school, I have taken no less than 6 hard fouls off the mask, I'm on mask 3 now, and yes, this still hurts and rings your bell for a solid 5 minutes.

I gotta give respect to the umpires that have the awareness to help balance a struck catcher, prevent him from falling and making it worse. With all the other things they have to monitor, they still have some mental juice left for that!
I am glad to see the use of those hockey masks diminishing as they have next to no padding for absorption. They also do not come off easily. The bird cage types are getting better with better materials and way more padding. Also very important are the type of helmet you wear under the mask. Those with the square backs secure the mask much better than an earless batting helmet.
It's less that they don't care and more of not much you can do there as an opposing player in the middle of competition. I think the best they can do in that moment is to stay out of the way.
