  • The Watauga river is one of the best rivers in the south-east and is only an hour from Appalachian State, where I attend school. My buddy Austin and I took a few trips up there in November and early December and got into a ton of stellar fish. We had one thing in mind, catch big fish.

    Ive watched you guys for a while and dont know how I've never seen this video! You were fishing about 7 minutes from my house and that has been one of my favorite spots for years. I loved the video! If you guys ever get back up this way, let me know and we can hit the river.

    Awesome fishing action, incredible video, and I just decided to get back into fly fishing within the last two weeks, after selling my rods ten years ago, and the Watauga river has been added to my small, but growing list of fishy places. Thank-you...

    You should come back in mid-late April. There is a huge caddis hatch that lasts for about a week. The river is absolutely littered with caddis and big fish gorge when it starts.

      Fly Fishing TN sounds like a ton of stoke! We'll be watching the hatches for sure man.

    I am passing thru Tennessee (from Oklahoma) on my way to Merlefest and trying to figure out public waters for wading / fly fishing. Any suggestions? We are staying between Elizabethton and Johnson City for about two and a half days. Sure liked this video and was greatly impressed by the comment from the cancer survivors that follow you. I have an extra special place in my heart for them. You closed your response perfectly. “God bless”.

    Great video production. Nice trout too! I fish Watauga a lot but my spot doesn't see em white that big. Maybe a couple browns that big but the rainbows are generally smaller. I'm going for brookies next time I go

    • @WildFlyProductions
      @WildFlyProductions  Před 6 lety

      The Watuaga in TN actually does not have any brookies but there may be streams near by with brook trout in it.

    • @zarvelda9679
      @zarvelda9679 Před 6 lety

      WildFlyProductions yeah I fish Watauga a lot. Ive started going to the higher up mountain streams with high hopes. The stocked rainbows and browns killed a lot of the native Brookes off :(

    • @trophbrwntrouthunter
      @trophbrwntrouthunter Před 5 lety +1

      You can find those rainbows in certain places, the larger ones were rainbows from Hatcheries that don’t lay eggs anymore. They throw them in at certain places, bridges usually. They throw them in on the noli too.

    Nice video. Y'all use furled leaders? Do they not spook fish?

    • @WildFlyProductions
      @WildFlyProductions  Před 7 lety +1

      Yeah we do and no they actually do not, there is a paste type floatant we use and it keeps the leader afloat. It also saves you a ton of money on buying new leaders, I haven't taken off my leader in months. Go check out the leaders we used (link in the video description).

    • @coryb2407
      @coryb2407 Před 7 lety +2

      WildFlyProductions do you use them only with dries? Or with nymphs and streamers too? How long of a tippet?

    • @WildFlyProductions
      @WildFlyProductions  Před 7 lety +3

      Cory Bosworth we use them with all types of flies and usually for dries and nymphs we do about 36 inches of tippet to our first fly.

    hey guys love the vid, have you ever heard of Todd island park in Todd NC. Its a delayed harvest like the watauga. Its right on the border of the Ashe/watauga line. It has great access points and while the fish arent as big, it is still a great place to tighten the lines!

    • @WildFlyProductions
      @WildFlyProductions  Před 7 lety +1

      dylan turnmire yeah man we have fished there a few times but most times there are too many people.

    • @dylanturnmire9425
      @dylanturnmire9425 Před 7 lety +1

      Also does the trout license in NC cover the watauga in Tennessee or do you guys purchase day passes for Tennessee?

    • @WildFlyProductions
      @WildFlyProductions  Před 7 lety +1

      dylan turnmire we purchased a year license for Tennessee (out of state fisherman). It's $100 for the year in TN.

    • @trophbrwntrouthunter
      @trophbrwntrouthunter Před 5 lety

    • @WildFlyProductions
      @WildFlyProductions  Před 7 lety

      Oh yeah man, there are so many wild streams near by and Tennessee tailwaters are only an hour from boone. I honestly can't imagine going to school anywhere else. If you're in the area swing by Due South Outfitters and they'll give you a little more intel about the area. Good luck with everything.

    Your videos would be much better if you did more than simply hold fish after fish up to the camera. Slow down and discuss patterns, aquatic insect life, gear set-up for a few minutes... and the specifics of the river. Engage the viewer more. IMO
