I worked at one of the Apple Stores in NYC when I was 39 about to turn 40. It's true the average age is somewhere between 20 and 23, and then there are a few of us who were older. My co-workers were nice, but I did feel so much older. No matter how "cool" you are, who you are at 23 and who you are at 39 are very different. All that being said, it was a great experience looking back. Now I'm 49 and with my time at Apple ever receding into the past, and I'm Facebook friends with a lot of those former 23-year-olds and I see them coming to grips where their aging self. We all have to deal with growing older if we are lucky.

I am a high school English teacher, and every year with my seniors, when we have our short memoir unit, I always read “Jesus Shaves,” by David Sedaris, with them. Among my students, it has become lore that when I read this story aloud to them, there is one paragraph during which I laugh so hard that I start to cry while reading. It might be the funniest paragraph I ever read in my life. His sense of humor is on the same wavelength as my own, and I appreciate him so much for the laughter he has brought me over the years.

I am 64 years old and I worked for the Census 2020 as a Tech Support Clerk. I have always been very good with technology and computers, since they took up whole room. All the Tech people where grouped together in one part of the Census office. When someone had a problem with a Census computer, iphone or ipad, they would come over to our part of the room. It never failed, they would walk right by my desk to one of the 20 somethings desk for help. And the funniest part, was 9 times out 10, the 20 something would tell them, ask Una (that's me), she is good at fixing that problem. And they would look at me, with this incredulous look on their face, like how could that old lady possibly fix a tech problem.

I get SO tired of the jokes young people make about “parents not knowing how to use computers” when it’s usually exactly the opposite. Apple uses that word far too freely. I once set up a neighbor's Apple WiFi access point and got it to work with another home network vendors' equipment. One day, when he couldn't get in touch with me, he had to call Apple tech support who said that what I had done was "impossible" and that whoever had gotten it to work was a "genius." It had the desired effect; my neighbor was impressed with me and not at all upset with Apple for refusing to let their proprietary hardware play nice with others.

I have a short story with a different twist. In my mid 50s my head began to get burned from the chemicals in the hair color I was now forced to use every 3-4 weeks to cover my graying hair. There was one and only one inspiration for letting my hair go natural: seeing all those fabulous 20 somethings in NYC *deliberately* coloring their hair shades of white and gray. They gave me the confidence I needed to go for it.

My scalp stopped being red and sore plus my hair stopped falling out. My beautiful silver highlights at my temples started to show. Now, at 45yo at the grocery store, I get asked if I need help out to the car by 20yo check out clerks. SMH

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

electronics don't generally age well not necessarily because of "planned obsolescence, poor build, right to repair ..." it mostly because the technology evolves more rapidly than any other sector. new and usually better stuff comes often, which automatically renders the old one obsolete. which is why it wouldn't make sense to pay more than a certain amount for say, an apple watch, because the next one is going to do more things and better. wouldn't it make more sense to buy a new apple watch for 199 than to repair a first gen apple watch for, say 100?
plus accusing apple of planned obsolescence would be like accusing walmart of being too expensive.

When Apple ultimately stops updating Intel based Macs, I will have more difficulty installing another OS on it than I would on another vendor's hardware. I get the feeling that Apple regards its hardware as consumable (which is to say "more so than other vendors"). The issue is that Apple seems to set the standard for consumer computing devices. Try buying a laptop without a poor imitation of aMacBook keyboard or trackpad. It's becoming increasingly hard to buy a device that's user serviceable.

Let's be honest -- going into an Apple Store is one of the most paradoxical experiences one can have. One of the world's most valuable companies but one of the world's most perfect money gobbling experiences.
Script-bound individuals who cannot think in true problem solving or truly useful ways. Naturally the latter creates the former. Imperfect and bewildering experiences every time I've entered those spaces, e.g., "I want to buy a phone; that phone right there". To which, "I'm sorry sir, I cannot sell you a phone without an appointment". Yes, that happened and similar stories are common if you ask around and I'm sure nothing will ever change. In fact, these sorts of experiences will become more so. Best of luck to all!

Hi my name is David and now that I realize I'm old young people offend me. Why don't they cater to my fragile ego, why don't they act as old as I do and oh yeah I remember what it was like to be young. What a sad little man who hasn't learned anything in life.

A story that our culture is a step closer to a Brave New World where if you're not young, you're old, and ironically the setting is within a place of business that leveraged 1984 in their early advertisements.

When I was in my 40s, I was so looking forward to turning 50,....our community made it known by 50 I would be bestowed with a handy card that granted the barer, generous discounts on coffee, donuts, and lunches from a select menu, from many small diners. When I turned 50, the state run issuer, upped the age to 55,.....and again when I was 55,...they upped it again to age 60. By the time I arrived at age 60,....the issuer, had ended to program. The vendors complained it was cutting into their profit margins.
