"Der gute Kamerad" ("The good Comrade"), also known by its incipit as Ich hatt' einen Kameraden ("I had a comrade") is a traditional lament of the German Armed Forces. The text was written by German poet Ludwig Uhland in 1809. Its immediate inspiration was the deployment of Badener troops against the Tyrolean Rebellion. In 1825, the composer Friedrich Silcher set it to music, based on the tune of a Swiss folk song.
The song is about the immediate experience of a soldier losing a comrade in battle, detached from all political or national ideology; as a result, its use was never limited to one particular faction and was sung or cited by representatives of all political backgrounds throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, and was translated for use in numerous fighting forces, French, Dutch, Spanish, Japanese and others.
"The Good Comrade" still plays an important ceremonial role in the German Armed Forces and is an integral part of a military funeral, continuing a tradition started at some point around 1871.
The song has also become traditional in obsequies of the Military of Austria, the Austrian firebrigades and the highly prussianized Chilean Army and the National Army of Colombia. It is also used to some degree in the French Army, particularly in the Foreign Legion. When the song is played, soldiers are to salute, an honour otherwise reserved for national anthems only.
Occasionally the song is played at civil ceremonies, most often when the deceased had been affiliated with the military. It is also commonly sung at the funerals of members of a Studentenverbindung. Finally, the song is often played on Volkstrauertag, the German Remembrance Day, at memorials for the fallen.

Vor ein paar Jahren habe ich in Deutschland gearbeitet. Ich bin Spanier. In der Stadt, in der ich wohnte, gab es einen Soldatenfriedhof. Ich besuchte ihn häufig und sprach ein Gebet für seinen Mut und seine Hingabe an sein Land. Auf vielen Grabsteinen war "Unbekannter deutscher Soldat. 1943, 1945" eingemeißelt. Trauer überwältigte mich und ich weinte. Ich war allein dort und die Umgebung ohne Person. Es tat mir auch leid, dass ein Ausländer wie ich der einzige war, der diesen Friedhof besuchte. Deutsches Volk, besucht eure gefallenen Soldaten. Es ist ein sehr intimer Moment

Tengo la impresión que las actuales generaciones no sólo no se interesan sino que incluso desprecian a sus antepasados. Creo que la cultura alemana se va a diluir ya que los alemanes se convirtieron en disciplinados seguidores de la agenda 2030 y del N.O.M.
Es gibt jedes Jahr den Volkstrauertag im November und jedes Stadt/ Dorf/ Gemeinde hat gewöhnlich ein Ehrenmal für die Gefallen der Kriege. Zum Volsktrauertag finden dort gewöhnlich Veranstaltungen statt. Bei mir ist ein Ehrenmahl um die Ecke und jedes Schützenfest im Juni hat einen Umzug, dazu gehört auch, daß dort gestoppt wird und dieses Stück dort gespielt wird.

@@Rumst1er Ehrlich, ich nehme mir jedesmal vor NICHT zu flennen! Aber es geht einfach nicht! Mein Großvater (1899 geb.), war in beiden Kriegen, mein 2.Opa (von der Mutter) war im 2.Krieg. Meine Mutter hat ihn 10 Jahre ,von 1940- Anfang 50er nicht gesehen! Wahnsinn! Er war nach dem Krieg " Opfer" der rachsüchtigen Franzaken! Ausgemergelt, und traumatisiert, starb er mit nur 56, 1963. Aber ein großes Glück hatte er noch: Er konnte seinen Enkel(mich geb. Juni62), noch um Arm halten, und mit Zitronencreme füttern! (WEIHNACHTEN 1962). Für mich Scheiss e, ich habe zu früh einen tollen Opa verloren. Was hat er angegeben mit mir! Ein toller Kerl (R.I.P.) Rügen grüsst, Torsten.

Ich werde äußerst selten emotional, aber dieses Lied erinnert mich immer an meine gefallenen Vorfahren die ich nie kannte. Meine Großmutter erzählt mir heute noch oft von ihrem Vater und Großvater, die in den beiden Weltkriegen gefallen sind.

Großvater und Vater haben jeweils ihre Brüder in den Weltkriegen verloren, Papa und ich haben zur Erinnerung die Vornamen der Helden erhalten, schöne Geste.
I feel that this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written to describe the less talked about horrors of war. My Grandfather was a Oberstleutnant in the (German) military on the Russian front from 1914 to 1918 and in his journal (which is one of my most prized possessions of all time, along with his music book full of sheet music which stopped a Russian Mosin-Nagant 7.62x54mmR round from blowing out his chest. Luckily it just destroyed his violin sheet music.) he describes singing along with his men this exact song during their long arduous march on foot home from Russia back to Austria. From his writings, this song was very important for the mental well being of his men and himself by giving them each a chance to remember and honor their fallen comrades in arms. My Grandfather also writes in his memoirs/war journal that his most emotionally painful memory was during the retreat from Eastern Europe back home, he and his men heard crunching all under their feet whenever they took a step forward for quite a very long distance. When my Grandfather looked under the frozen snow and ice below them, he realized that he and his unit of men had been (and would continue to do so) walking on the frozen dead and dismembered bodies of his fellow soldiers and civilians. Thank you Dr Ludwig for bringing this great and powerfully meaning song to the masses who listen to you as this was/is a very important and sacred song of the soldier at war.

Mein Großvater hat dieses Lied, in Erinnerung an seine gefallen Kameraden, wir öfters vorgesungen. Er kämpfte auch in Verdun und brachte mir damals damit schon bei, wie grauenvoll der Krieg ist. Ihn standen damals Tränen in den Augen und nach über 70 Jahre nach seinen Worten, stehen mir auch jetzt noch die Tränen in den Augen

Magnifique chant de tradition militaire allemand. Je suis ancien militaire et à chaque fois que j'écoute ce chant il me vient les larmes aux yeux. Les jeunes d'aujourd'hui ne savent plus apprécier une telle beauté et émotion, et c'est bien dommage.
L'image est bien choisie : l'aigle descendu du ciel amène une croix de fer pour récompenser le soldat qui s'est sacrifié, c'est très émouvant.

I am part or a reenacting group,we went to Verdun some time ago and among us were germans,when the ceremony came we were told to sing a song,after a few seconds we started singing this and i shit you not,halfway through the song,the germans started crying and didn't stop even after we stoped singing,they told us that in Germany,they could only sing the instrumental of this song.

I miss you Maw, you didn't care about what anyone thought about you and did your own thing until 92 years old. My grate uncle was in the luftwaffe. He died sometime late in the war. His gravesite is unknown. I think about it when i listen to this song. I wish i could find him and pay my respects...

played at his funeral and my Dad has a recording of it. I think that the history behind this song, going all the way back to Napoleon.

Thus... this song. I have heard it only once, and that was at the funeral for my grandfather. He served in the German Empire and later in the British Empire. This was the first sing to play, followed by his favorite to sing, A Long Way From Tipperary. It’s a beautiful song that has no right to be censored. I hope one day CZcams can stop doing this, and Germany can realize it’s past beyond WW2.

As I learn more German songs, I am happy and grateful that there is a translation to these wonderful songs. The more I learn these songs, as a Hispanic, I've also realized that I am jealous of Germany. (I am usually not the jealous type too). This was the 1st song I learned, BUT not this melody, it changed at “einern bessern findst du nit” (Oma u Opa were Platt). After “er going an meine Seite” it began the refrain: “Gloria, Gloria, Gloria Victoria,mit Herz u Hand” It was sung on an up-beat, and not a Trauerslied

Es ist auch heute noch so. Kameradschaft ist das "höchste Gut" in der Truppe. Und an meine Widersacher, nein, Kameradschaft reduziert sich nicht auf das Bier. Es ist vieles mehr!!! Dieses Lied drückt so viel aus, unter anderem auch Kameradschaft. Auch wenn es regelmäßig in einem anderem Kontext gespielt wird. Egal, ich finde es wunderschön, und es kommen mir regelmäßig die Tränen

CZcams must remember, no matter how horrible things that Germany has done in the past are, not everything they did in the past was bad, the same goes for the German kingdoms before Germany's unification. This was made at a time when France attempted to crush German culture. But German culture still lives on. And we must keep this great example of German perseverance.

Er war ein sehr guter Mann, nicht unbedingt ein Kamerad, obwohl seine älteren Geschwister im Zweiten Weltkrieg im deutschen und holländischen Widerstand kämpften. Sie wollten das alte Deutschland und das Niederland zurück. Vielen Dank Herr Ludwig fur das wunderbar lied. Gute nacht und Gottes segne.

I get emotional whenever I hear this wonderful song. How can one not? Though a German song about the loss of a friend and comrade during a specific battle, it has a human aspect which transcends conflicts and differences. The song was adopted and adapted by various armed forces around the world, and was sung by people of all political persuasions in the 19th and 20th centuries, and even today, because it was never directly connected to a political faction or ideology.
Those who associate it with Nazism are the same kind of outraged people who protested outside of a small inn in the United States last year, because the owners flew a Confederate flag beside the American one. Their behavior was misplaced and uninformed though - it wasn't a Confederate flag - it was the Norwegian flag, in keeping with the Nordic theme of the inn, and they could not - or would not - acknowledge the difference. Certain activists have a narrative and goal; they see only what they want to see to further it. This is sad because in the process, they often fail to see - and feel - things which make us human and connect us. Instead, they marginalize, limit, cancel and destroy much that is beautiful and meaningful along the way.
As someone who was born in Norway to a Norwegian father and a German mother, I salute and honor in my heart those average, ordinary soldiers who fought and died for their country, their fatherland or motherland, and all that they held dear; the memory of their ancestors, their loved ones, their children, and a way of life. It is these things that they ultimately sought to protect and bequeath, regardless of whichever political faction was in power at the moment they took up arms, often with a sense of duty and love. During WW1, German, British and French soldiers briefly called a truce at Christmas. Despite the horrors of war, those soldiers on Christmas Eve saw each other as brothers, bound by sacrifice for their country and each other. Despite misguided or evil politicians and leaders, one can respect the fallen for those noble qualities. Governments dictate policies. God knows the human heart.
