  • I thought I would have an unboxing...a first impression...a 100 mile video, but it took me 200 miles in the Altra Lone Peak 7s to finally feel like I had something to say about these shoes. I definitely still don't have all the answers, but if you have a question, leave it down in the comments. Thanks for watching!

    The old Lone Peaks had good grip. Hard to believe they could make a significant improvement. I was slipping all over the place on wet rocks and logs with the Vibram on my Topos.
    I still have new LP 4.5 5 & 6 in the box because I bought some extras when they were on sale so I might just ship v 7 altogether. I also have brand new New Balance and new Topos in the box and have a 100 miles more to go on my LP current LP 6. I'm doing more hiking than running but I am doing some running, just not up all the hills I hike so it's only about 20% running.

    Thanks for the review bro, nice vid too. My interest in the shoe is from possibly the opposite end of the market in terms of conditions and use, I live between Hawaii and NZ, and am not a runner but more of a hiker/gardener. Altra's Mt king's have been my shoe for the past 5 or so years but now that they're discontinued, I'm thinking I can cushion up a bit to the LP7. I don't suppose the weight would be an issue for me, just not too keen on going from the incredible sticky vibram soles on the Mt Kings to something less aggressive, as the conditions in both of my habitat's are clay, mud, rivers and roots. I think your vid did answer my questions pretty well, so thanks! N

      Glad you found the review helpful even from here on the other side of the world. The LP7 is definitely a way different shoe than the King MT, but it's probably Altra's most similar offering at this point (most aggressive lug pattern for example). Superiors would give you similar ground feel to the MT, but nothing close to sufficient traction.

      That is a pretty tough question. In the end, if I could pay the same price for both shoes, I think I might be influenced to go with the 7s by an illogical desire for what is newer, but as long as you can find them in your size, I can only imagine the 6s have a much lower cost and much higher performance to cost ratio.

    Hey Kent - was helpful to watch the video. I live in Ontario, Canada and will likely explore trails like the one you did (maybe with a little less snow).
    I'm confused if I should get the Lone Peak 7 or the Lone Peak All-Wthr Low 2. I've heard waterproofness is a double-edged sword - on the one hand, water doesn't get in, but on the other if it does (from external sources or sweat), it's hard to get it out. What would be your thoughts? Does the Lone Peak 7 do a fair job at keeping your foot dry (or getting dry quickly if it gets wet), or should one consider the All-Wthr 2?
    Would love to hear from the community as well.

    • @KentMearig
      @KentMearig  Před rokem +1

      This is a really great question, Arora. Honestly, the last time I was using waterproof shoes consistently, I was doing a lot more hiking than running. For me, keeping my feet dry in a waterproof trail shoe requires me to spend so much time and mental energy trying to avoid water that is too deep for the shoes, that I get less running and less enjoyment out of my time. I usually run between 45 minutes and 2 hours, and I don't mind having my feet get a little bit damp for that amount of time. I think the Lone Peak line has had decent drainage, and the same is probably true for the 7, though the increased padding in the upper will hang on to a little more water around the ankle collar. I could say more, but I think it might devolve into personal preference. I hope that helps.

    • @KentMearig
      @KentMearig  Před rokem +1

      @@aroraparivar9644 If I was running for those hours, I would definitely choose a shoe with more cushion under foot than the LP7, whether it was waterproof or not. I think maybe there's an all weather version of the Olympus, but maybe that's only in more of a hiking version. I think I would consider looking into a shoe like that for hiking, even the waterproof LP, but right now I just hike in rubber boots if I know I've got to cross streams or slog through mud on part of my hike. It's a very personal choice as far as what works for your feet and what doesn't.

      I've been using the 7s as everyday wear-around shoes ever since this review. I don't know if that actually translates much to hiking, but they've held up well and are still very comfortable. I would think about the 7s as hikers as long as there was a big enough discount on them to get well under the price of the 8s that are already cheaper.

      Having spent more time running on wet, hard surfaces than any other kind, I can say that the outsole on the LP7 is pretty mid-pack compared to other shoes. They are usable on any occasion but certainly far from top-tier (not at all as good as vibram).

I can't say I don't prefer the toe protection on the last two versions, and replacing it with the welded instead of stitched overlay isn't enough to keep this new version from getting heavier. Sizing is such a hard question to answer, but here's what I think. I typically go back and forth between 10.5 and 11 in Altra shoes. Very rarely even the 11s feel too small, and occasionally 10.5s are comfortable for long miles. With the LP7, I went with an 11 to be safe, and I don't think it was a bad fit for me...but because I prefer my shoes on the small side whenever possible, I would probably try a 10.5 if I ever bought a second pair.
