Outstanding review and extremely useful!!! MANY THANKS!!!
You're most welcome! 😁 I'm glad it helped, thank you for the comment, cheers!
Excellent comparison, Thanks so much!
Thanks mate! Glad it helped 🙂
Thank you for this review. Very informative and helpful. Think I'm going to go with the Olympus..
Awesome cheers mate, I'm glad it helped! Let me know how you get on with the new shoes 😁👍
Awesome review thanks! Just got some Lone Peak 7's love 'em ' looking for another model might be the Olympic 5's!
Thanks mate, you're most welcome! Yeah both shoes are great, can't go wrong really!
Excellent review!🦋👣
Thanks so much! Glad it helped 😁
This is a very deep comparison between the Lonepeak and Olympus
Very useful to me as I love my Lonepeak 4's but need a new pair as the soloes are showing signs off over us 650 miles in my Lonepeaks
So I've been advised to try and pair of Olympus 5's and love your experience in them - I need them for a Ultra run in Snowdonia so lots of technical and soil / rock
Many thanks for the fact the Olympus has more cushioning..... my feet need it (growing older) thanks again Jaspar
Hey mate thanks for the message, I'm glad this video has helped 😁👍 all the best for your Ultra run, I bet that will be stunning!
Great review, thanks! I have both, I wondered why my feet hurt with the Olympus and not the Lone Peak. I'll only be using the Olympus for less technical flat trails from now on, thanks for the insight.
Thanks for the comment mate, I'm glad the review helped! 😁 It's good to have a bit of a shoe rotation for different workouts, terrain, etc 👍
Excellent review. I have used the LP 5 and now the Olympus 5, both for long-distance walking with a 10 - 13kg backpack. I prefer the Olympus 5 for their increased cushioning on longer hikes. I very much agree with you, they are more forgiving on the downhills and suit a greater variety of terrain which you are bound to encounter over the course of several 100 km. What the Olympus 5 are terrible for is wet grass / bog / moorland. They have absolutely no grip on that terrain. I may as well be walking on an ice rink. I normally walk with poles which mitigate this issue but it is something to keep in mind depending on the terrain you plan to use them on.
I encountered that exact situation yesterday after some heavy rain this week and very wet conditions on the trails and the Olympus were not performing well. I have ordered a pair of the Timp 5s which are on their way and have very high hopes for! I think they will replace the Olympus in my shoe rotation
Nice job 👍👍👏
Cheers mate thanks for watching!
For me, the lone peak sole wore out on my second hike/run. The sole on the Olympus lasted, but the cushion collapsed around mile 250.
That's a real shame! But thank you for sharing mate. I'm currently making another video on the lone peaks as I've had some issues with them since making this video. I have heard that Altra have fixed the durability issues with their new shoes they are releasing this year so I'm staying hopeful. Cheers
I tried Lone Peaks but was getting bruised feet on the rocky trails here in So Cal and the Eastern Sierras, changed to Olympus and have been very happy
I think there's about an 8mm difference in stack height between the two shoes so that would make sense! Glad to hear you found the right shoe for you 😁👍
I plan to do 5 days hiking in Wind River range in WY this summer. Did the Olympus give you enough sensory feedback and stability in Rocky mountainous trails? I’ve only used my Lone peak 2.5s in the past and was considering using my new Olympus 5 next time but worried the width and stack height might be too clunky and unstable for steep mountain terrain. Your thoughts?
@@Como651 for me personally I find the feedback perfect, just enough that you know what is going on underfoot but not so much that “you are feeling every rock”. Clunky vs stability, I know some of the ultra runners like the narrower shoe but a lot were either running speedgoats or Olympus (both “big” shoes). I just did 100km ultra (Canyons) in the Olympus this last weekend and my feet in just smartwool hiking socks and Olympus were great.
As far as hikes in steep terrain, i’ve done lots on standard trails (Whitney, Grogonio, cactus 2 clous, Big Iron (Iron Mountain), Grand Canyon) in snow and regular conditions and they are very grippy. For straight mountaineering I couldn’t tell you.
@@Como651 one other thing, you can get them less than $100 at Dicks Sporting Goods if you are patient and don’t have to gave a certain color. Look for the “see price in cart” colors and they are 95-110 depending on week.
Perfect explanation of the underfoot feel, surprisingly stable for a big shoe! And the Vibram grip is unparalleled
Thank you. I couldn't decide, so bought both. I don't agree that the foot shapes are identical. My Olympus 5 interiors are wider than my LP 7.
Can't go wrong with both 😂 really? That's interesting, mine are the same width. That's a little concerning!
What about length? I read reviews that Olympus 5 is short in length
@@slavasss2189 My foot is 11 inches long, with the second toe as the longest. My Olympus 5 size US 11.5 insole is 11.5 inches long. They are a good fit for me.
LP7 pinches on the inside arch
@@slavasss2189I have the Olympus 5s and just tried on the new lone peak 2 mid all weather. The Olympus are slightly shorter which I think is a benefit since I used to wear ultras in 9.5 but Ultras in general seem to have been getting narrower so had to go up to 10s which used to be slightly too long. I wear size 10 street shoes and the Olympus 5 fit true to size. New lone peaks run slightly narrow and long now in my street shoe size. Hardcore hikers seem to like the longer toe box though so the toes are not banging on steep descents so maybe they evolved to the fit we have today. I originally ordered a size 9.5 in lone peak mid all weather and they were way too narrow and uncomfortable even without any foot swelling on a short hike. The length was okay with about an index finger width of room. Moving to the size 10 the length gave me around a thumb width of room and snug but not tight fit widthwise. I like the fit of the Olympus better than the current lone peaks. They are the perfect length and width. I have medium width feet and low arch.
Ty for the great reviews. As someone who is recovering from Plantar fac. for the last 4 month, having very wide feet, I think too narrow shoes was the main problem. I am basicly pain free for 3-4 weeks and did a lot of strength training and barefoot walking in the last weeks. I think I will give Altras a try, because of the very wide toe box. I already ordered the Escalante 3 (I know the 2,5 would probably have been better after your video) and I think I will get the Olympus 5 too for a 2nd softer shoe.
And then hopefully take baby steps back into running, fingers crossed.
Hey mate thank you for the comment, I'm glad the videos are helping! 😁 Plantar fasciitis is a real pain!! I've been there. It sounds like you're on the right track though, barefoot walking is amazing for foot health, good stuff 👍 I have some exercise tutorials for the feet on my channel including a recent one I made using toe spreaders, those videos might be able to help you out and keep the feet healthy 🙂 all the best with it mate, I would love to hear how you get on with the new shoes! Cheers
It’s great to hear you mention strength training and barefoot walking!! I also did a lot of single-foot balancing exercises in regular yoga classes!! You are clearly on the right track. Please excuse my unsolicited advice, but have you found physiotherapist Brodie Sharpe’s Run Smarter podcast (and book and youtube channel)?? I can’t recommend his podcast highly enough as do an ever growing number of running experts, especially for cutting thru the oh so prevalent myths about injuries, shoes, recovery, etc!! So many top athletes report years of fighting a particular injury until they found Brodie!! Wishing you good luck with yours that it’s well behind you very soon!! 👍🏻
@@bev9708 ty, will check it out
@@jasparvowden ty, the Escalante 3 arrived and I did a short 2 km run/walk with them and they feel really good (no pain so far), so I am hopeful and I will check out your other videos.
That's awesome mate, definitely sounds like you're healing and being smart and patient in your recovery process which is very difficult!
I loved the olympus 5 from the first km. Just bought a second pair after 450 km on the first one. I have finished a couple of 40km trail races on them, soon on a 75. Still no cushion issues
Nice mate that's great to hear! Enjoy the adventure of the Ultra Marathon, all the best with it 😁
@@jasparvowden everything went well with the race. Only problem was the olympus 5. Now they have 398 km and during the race a part of the sole separated. I had to cut this part because it was annoying to run with it. I was excited about how it feels running with them but now I dont know👎
That's a pain mate! It's a shame that it had to happen during your race too. The same thing ended up happening with mine on the right foot but the left side is still holding up well. I've heard they've fixed those issues with the durability in the Olympus 6 but will have to wait and see.
love your not destroying company and great fair review..altra there are some haters..altra is back new owner new shoe qualty they should of never left altra
Thanks mate! I am still a little bit worried that Altra are slowly heading in the wrong direction with the new ownership and I hope they still stick to their roots and maintain their original ethos even if it means having some shoes with more technology and some shoes that are more minimal, I'm not sure how it's going to pan out but yeah at the moment I still love their shoes for the most part
@@jasparvowden they have one of original owners take company out of a giant board of directors one of original owners took over company which is why your seeing quality and tech go up .they just released olympus via 2 now it's finally super soft ..more to come some bangers on way just watch..I love there 4 mm drop fwd shoe

I'm on my third pair of Lone Peaks. The only shoe I run in now... Age 66.
Nice one mate! What made you stick with the lone peaks?
I just bought the olympus 5 for winter tennis on hard courts ( tennis shoes have poor grip when it is damp). They were 65 quid delivered with 10% off for some reason. The thicker sole should be good for accidental hard tennis landings. I already know trail running outer soles work best on damp tarmac. Full on barefoot shoes are terrible for tennis, they just buckle up underfoot and trip you up. I need the wide toe box of altra. Hope i am not disappointed✓.
Nice mate, I had never thought of the Olympus as a sports shoe but I can't see why it wouldn't work and the grip on the sole is amazing so I hope it's an effective alternative to the regular tennis shoes!
Lone Peak 7 ordered
Nice one mate! Probably get them on sale now too 😁
hello Jaspar, thank you so much for your video :) please, the best Altra model for Camino de Santiago? 900km pilgrims way (hiking), daily 25-40 km. please your advice. Thank you so much!
Oh wow that's quite the hike!! In terms of these two shoes, it depends if you want more cushioning or more durability. I've found in the Olympus it has more cushioning but the vibram grip has begun ripping away from the outsole so it is not the most durable shoe. The lone peak is a little more durable and nimble but it has a little less cushioning. Altra also have hiking shoes but I have not tried them personally. Good luck on your adventures!!
My choices are limited since I wear a size 14…but I love my lone peaks.
I can imagine that would be a pain finding shoes your size! Lucky I don't have that problem 😅 at least the Lone Peaks have a very roomy toe box
Altra line on all models are up to 15 size, some have 16, like LP
Great review. Thanks for all the info. Question: how is the sizing between the two? In other words, if I have a size 13 in the LP 7, will a 13 in the Olympus 5 be the same for my foot? I just bought the LP 7. I know, the 8 is out now. My wife got those. But the 7 was on sale for me. Now I want to pick up the Olympus 5. I will be using these for my hiking shoe. I'm planning on buying them online, so that's why I want to know if I can get away with buying the same size as I bought with the 7's. Thanks
Yeah good call on getting the 7s, they're so much cheaper on the sale and probably very similar to the 8s anyway. I've found the lone peaks and Olympus fit very similarly except the midfoot is built up a little bit more in the Olympus for a bit of added stability but it doesn't affect the sizing choice at all
Great, thanks for the info.
I’d really love a Lone Peak with Vibram outsole. Lone peak is my favorite but the tread wears flat so fast- it’s disappointing.
I agree, the Vibram outsole is unparalleled. My brother recently bought a pair of Timp 5s which have the Vibram mega grip and he loves them, they will probably be my next pair of Altras
great review Jaspar, thanks for sharing.
Which would you recommend for distance hiking, as opposed to running?
Thanks mate! I would probably go for the Olympus for distance hiking it has more cushioning and is a little bit more stable also
Thanks man, appreciated!@@jasparvowden
You're welcome 😁👍
Beautiful scenery where you’re running! Where in the world are you?
Stunning isn't it! This was when I was down south with my wife in Queenstown, New Zealand on our honeymoon 😊
I just bought the lp7 let’s see how they go.
Yeeeeees, awesome bro! Keen to hear how they go 😁
I bought the via olympus, and I didn't like them. Do you think I am safe to assume i wouldn't like the olympus trail shoe ? Or is it a different thing?
I would assume they have a similar feel, but I haven't run in the via olympus so I couldn't say. The via olympus has the ego max midsole and the Olympus 5 has compression moulded eva so there will be some difference in feel
@@jasparvowden would you use them for a 50k trail ? Or would you stick with the lone peak ?
@@DiegoSagastume97 Personally, the longer I've run in both shoes I prefer the lone peak but that's just my individual preference because I like to have good ground feel. If you need extra support then the Olympus has that, but the lone peak is certainly a more nimble shoe and still has enough cushioning to take you over long distances if you need it
Would you say Olympus is a good all rounder overall? I’ll be backpacking soon, in Australia/asia.
Yeah it's pretty versatile, it would be great for backpacking. The only problem is that the outsole isn't as durable as it should be. The vibram grip is amazing, but they seem to have glued it onto the shoe in individual strips and some of those strips become loose well before the grip itself wears out which is a shame. That's my only real concern with this shoe other than that it's great
Do you have any other recommendations besides the Olympus than? Should be also comfy fit and ideally zero drop.
Personally I would go for a Vibram V-Trail but that is super minimalist. Otherwise the Lone Peaks are a great option they have great traction on them and a good ground feel while also having enough protection
No he tenido unas Altra anteriormente pero me gusta el concepto de barefoot, estaba mirando las Olympus 5 y leo muchas reseñas sobre la mala calidad y los problemas que está tenido la gente con el desgaste. ¿Habéis notado lo mismo?
Gracias y saludos.
Hi mate, yes I have had the same problems. They have attached the vibram mega grip as individual strips and a couple of those strips started to tear away from the shoe which was really annoying. It's a shame because apart from that it's a great shoe and it's been very durable otherwise
Someone commented the Olympus are shorter. I wear a 7.5 Lone Peak 7, should I order the same size in the Olympus 5?
My Olympus 5 and Lone Peak 7s insoles both measure exactly the same length and they both feel the same length when I run in them so yes I would order the same size
@@jasparvowden Perfect thanks! I've ordered a pair!
Nice! Let me know how they go 😁👍
@@jasparvowden I was excited to try a more cushioned Altra as my mileage has gone way up now training for my 1st ultra. But I must admit I was disappointed with the Olympus model. Unfortunately they did feel shorter than my Lone Peaks, possibly due to stiffer/thicker material around the toe. It felt like the heel padding was too low so even though I tightened using the last eyelet my heel didn't feel like it had a good lock down. Also I was shocked at how stiff the sole was!! They were returned ):
That's a shame, personal preference for footwear is so varied it's never a guarantee whether it will suit someone or not until you try them on. Hopefully you find a shoe that suits you better!
love my olympus dont care for lone peak...and my torins are great i use both in rotation
How do the Torins fit compared to the Olympus? I've wanted to try the Torins for quite some time now but can only afford so many shoes haha 😂😅
@jasparvowden they are true to size its there regular foot shape try them on before if ya can to get perfect size 😉
That's good to know! Not many stores stock them where I live so usually have to take the risk and buy online but it usually works out fine 👍
@jasparvowden if you have a taller mid foot it will be snugger heads up..but toe box is roomy..
I'm flat footed so that shouldn't be an issue, cheers mate! 👍
My deal breakers with them:
-arch support
-raised toes

That would normally bother me a lot also but I've found both shoes to be so comfortable to run in. Although the slight foot discomfort in the Olympus 5 could also be a result of some arch support in it. It's a shame because it doesn't mention the arch support on their website
@@jasparvowden can the insole be removed for both models for a 'truer' zero-drop feel?
@@RuminatingBroccoli I don't find that removing the insole feels any more true to a zero drop feel but you certainly get a bit more ground feel especially in the lone peaks
You sound like a Kiwi from the way you say, "Better" (Beeta). :)
Hahaha yeah mate sure am 😄 yeah we're quite lazy with the way we pronounce any words that end with 'er', we end up pronouncing it with an 'ah' sound. I'm not sure why lol 😂
@@jasparvowden I have tricks to tell the difference between Aussie, Kiwi, British, and South African. 🤣
Nice one, some times I still get Aussie and Kiwi accents mixed up I'm bloody useless 😂😅
That's not even a contest, the Olympus hands down 🤣
It comes down to the purpose of the workout, the terrain, and the individuals preference. Both shoes have their place imo
Will any of these work for a 4E foot?
Both of these shoes are the 'original fit' which is Altras widest fit. I think both of these shoes would be a good fit for a 4E foot. I have a pair of Asics Gel-Nimbus 24 shoes in a 4E sizing and I still prefer these two Altra shoes in terms of sizing, especially the width of the shoe
@@jasparvowden thanks for the answer. Could you do me a favor and measure the widest part of the insoles? Would be much appreciated 🙏
Good timing because I'm just about to head out for a run 😀 so I've just measured the insoles at the widest part (I'm a size 9.5 US) and they are as follows:
Olympus 5: 10.5cm / 4.13 inches
Lone Peak 7: 10cm / 3.93 inches
Asics Gel-Nimbus 24: 10.5cm / 4.3 inches
I measured the Asics shoes as well just for a comparison because they are a 4E size shoe however the toe box on those shoes is much more narrow which is why I prefer the Altra fit
@@jasparvowden you're the best man 🤟🤟 seems like the O5 are just as wide as the Torin 7 Wide that I own. Think I'll try the Olympus
Nice one mate, I hope they work well for you! How do you find the fit and feel of the Torins? I remember hearing somewhere that they're a stability shoe, do you think they have some form of anti pronation in them or are they non intrusive in that respect?
looks like ben lomond!
Yeah mate it is!! Beautiful views up there
@@jasparvowden did you run the last man standing by any chance??! I dnfd at 8 laps!
@@jacobjmiller was that the recent backyard ultra in Arrowtown? I don't actually live in Queenstown, the footage of Ben Lomond was from earlier this year on my honeymoon. I recently ran a backyard ultra near my home town and dnf'd at 12 hours. How was your experience with the run?
I own LP7s in size 15. Bought the Olympus in size 15…does NOT fit…too small.
That's a shame! It seems that Altra has some inconsistency with their sizing here. Personally I've found both shoes to fit the same but you're not the first to comment about the sizing being different so that's definitely a concern!
I think olympus always were short in length....but many complaints on 5th version....
Try Topo Athletics. Way better
I've heard they use too much stability tech which I'm not a fan of as it generally flares up my feet so sticking with Altra for now but that's the great thing about shoes nowadays there's something for everyone 😁
In both, there is too much cushioning.
Fair enough mate, everybody has their own preferences! Personally I like to mix it up, running a lot in Vibram Five Fingers but still having Altras on hand for variety
Don’t wear shoes then tough guy
Too little in the Lone Peak, too much in the Olympus, and both lack the Ego Max, Ego and EVA are just shhiit for running
I find the compression molded EVA in the Olympus to be more than enough cushioning for long runs and has a nice bounce to it, the Lone Peaks are certainly not the plush and bouncy type of midsole but they are great for technical terrain and a good tempo run through the trails, I think both shoes are great and have their place. Looking forward to the updates though as both shoes have some durability issues
