    I rebuilt this Chinese Coolster Tao Tao 110cc youth ATV quad earlier this Spring with spare parts after it was found to have a seized crankshaft. It was running like a champ for my nephew then just died. Cranks all day with solid spark but the motor won't fire even with ether in the filter or head. What happened?
    It wasn't what I thought but boy did I feel silly once I found the issue.
    This one is a model 3050b. No reverse gear on this motor.
    Update 1/20/2022 - I had to trim out some music audio midway through for a copyright claim. Turned out I only needed to add a link below but I can't revert the 'mute' that I did. Apologies for the dead sound spot.

    Having trouble with my lads atv 110cc chinese quad at the moment, so its been laid up for around 6-8 months but with ethanol free fuel, it WAS starting absolutely fine, iv charged the battery full and also got a jump pack on it incase it gets low - i pulled the spark plug and ground it an turned it over, its sparking maybe not PERFECT but its sparking, there appears to be fuel getting through to the carb at least - would my next port of call be firing some starter fluid down the neck of the carb with the air filter removed to see if it fires?

    • @VermontLife
      @VermontLife  Před rokem

      A little starter fluid into the air filter should be enough. Sounds like you have fuel and spark. Unless you’ve sheared the timing key (unlikely as it had only been sitting and was running when you parked it) you have mechanical timing as well. Perhaps your compression is low but overall I’d hit it with a little starting fluid, get it warmed up and running and see how it does after that. Good luck.

    Would you have any idea what would be the problem with my atv ? It’s just like the one in the video. So after a day of riding it suddenly stopped and wouldn’t crank anymore. My guess was that it overheated so I let it cool down but ever since that it hasn’t started again. Where do you think I can start by looking ?

    • @VermontLife
      @VermontLife  Před 2 lety

      Does the motor crank by hand? IE pull the plastic cover off the stator bolt hole by the left foot well and put a socket wrench in there to see if the motor is seized. If it is seized then there's a motor issue to go after. (no oil burned it up, part broke internally etc.) If you can turn it by hand then I'd check the basics. (Did your battery short out and is dead? Did a ground wire come loose. Do you get a click when you press the start button to make you believe you should check the solenoid etc.) I'd start with the above.

    • @JoseDiaz-zv3wp
      @JoseDiaz-zv3wp Před 2 lety

      @@VermontLife thanks for the reply! I followed your advice and came to the conclusion that it’s an internal problem. The smaller chain that’s inside the heads snapped. I believe it’s the chain to the cam ? So I have quite a project on my hands! Only thing is that there’s not much info on the parts for these atv’s online so I’m not sure which chain I need

    • @VermontLife
      @VermontLife  Před 2 lety +1

      @@JoseDiaz-zv3wp It would be the timing chain. It's not too bad a project. You should be able to remove it and replace it without taking the motor or head off. You'll access it by taking the stator cover off and a side cover on the head. Look for videos on timing chain replacement for tao taos and watch a video on two on finding top dead center on an atv like yours. With luck only the chain snapped and there's no or little other damage.

      If fuel isn't leaking out of the carb I wouldn't worry about it. I only turn them off when I have trouble, like a leaking carb. Or if I'm working on a carb it means I can shut off the flow rather than drain the tank.

    Could use help in troubleshooting
    I have 2 110 one runs perfect the other won’t start. I think it may be either a starter Solenoid or the starter.

      I had a similar issue on a Moto4 225. Solenoid would click when I went to start it. I thought it was the solenoid and swapped it out but ultimately found I had a 'broken' wire. czcams.com/video/H1LS3iejDKU/video.html If that link works that's the video I did troubleshooting it that might help but your symptom sounds similar.

      I pulled solenoid out of non running one and put it in running run n it works fine I just ordered a new starter for it. But I’ll have a look around for a bad ground wire I know battery is good lucky I have a running one to test things on lol

    • @VermontLife
      @VermontLife  Před 3 lety

      Awesome, spare parts are so helpful. Mine wasn’t the ground wire but the positive wire leading up to the fuse. The ‘break’ was hidden under electrical tape so it wasn’t obvious until I pulled it apart. Sometimes it started fine, sometimes it gave me the solenoid click. Often I could shake the battery and it would work again which ultimately was resulting in me shaking that bad wire connection. Glad you found the issue.

    • @VermontLife
      @VermontLife  Před 3 lety

      No, a woodruff key is a half moon shaped ‘key’ that’s sits in a channel in the crankshaft. It ensures that when the flywheel spins the crankshaft does as well. You would need to pull the flywheel to check which implies you would need a flywheel pulled tool.

    • @VermontLife
      @VermontLife  Před 7 měsíci

      Are you sure you don’t have a bad crank bearing giving some extra resistance? Try turning over by hand and feeling through the compression resistance. You’re looking to see if there are any other resistance ‘spots’. Not sure if I think valves would do that unless your valves are stuck. Good luck.

      @@VermontLifeyeah me, my dad and my brother having a similar issue with our 125cc, we couldn't get spark from our spark plug so we had to replace the stator which finally gave us spark but now we encountered a new issue where the atv wouldn't start when we put the spark plug into the atv, but when we take it out of the atv, the engine moves, and causing a bit of smoke with the red wire from the battery? Any tips?

    • @VermontLife
      @VermontLife  Před 10 dny

      Huh, the way you describe it… there is too much compression for the starter to turn the motor over when the plug is in. When you take the plug out you then have no compression and the starter can turn the motor over… sounds like a bad starter. Then you have the smoking red wire. Sounds like you are really overloading the circuit. Feels like you have resistance somewhere and/or bad starter.

    • @VermontLife
      @VermontLife  Před 2 lety

      Electrical timing, sounds like you checked the mechanical timing by inspecting the timing gear and chain etc. a bad stator, bad stator wiring or bad CDI could cause that. I had to diagnose that on the yfm350er videos I did. In the end it was a bad cdi for me.

    • @VermontLife
      @VermontLife  Před 2 lety

      No, should be on the intake stroke. Make sure the intake and exhaust valves are opening and closing properly. Might just need to have the valves adjusted at that point. If they are way out of spec it will have low compression and not start.

    • @VermontLife
      @VermontLife  Před 3 lety

      Have you confirmed you have spark? I would pull the plug out, keep it attached to the coil and ground it to the chassis. You should be able to kick it and see blue spark. It might be helpful to have someone else kick it over while you watch. If you have spark then put a little starter fluid down the spark plug hole and try to start it again, if it starts then dies you likely have a fuel issue. If that’s the case you may need a carb cleaning. There could be a number of things but confirming spark is a good first step.
