- Essentially 25 miniature video essays on 25 video games. My top 25 favorite games from the year 2017. I've listed my criteria in the video, but a quick recap: North American release dates, and 1.0 release dates only. For example, a game in my top 10 came out before 2017, but the World Wide date for 1.0 and on Xbox was in 2017.

This video was an absolute bitch to make. Hopefully it turned out good enough, but at this point, I'm just happy it's finished. Not sure what's next, even though I did allude to a certain game, but tbh another huge high-effort video sounds like too much rn. We'll see what happens.

You're in for a treat with The Long Dark / Divinity Original Sin 2. Love both of these games and have gotten over 700 hours out of each.
I played maybe 1 hour of both many many years ago, but I know better by now that I didn't give either enough time to grab me. Would you recommend playing DOS2 with a friend or solo?
@@Dorkaxe deciding to critique of the games within the context of the year they came out is dope. it's a really interesting concept.
Good list/video, I really like these types of lists that come out well after the fact rather than the end of the year, gives stuff time to sit and to find more overlooked games. I definitely agree 2017 was a standout year, so it's a good choice for one of these. Made me want to try a lot of these games, some I'd overlooked or not heard of like X-Morph and Darkwood, some I knew about but hadn't gotten around to like Persona 5 (your sell was really good as someone else who typically doesn't click with JRPGs) and Nex Machina, and some I tried but bounced off of like Rain World.
Love to hear it! Very happy you enjoyed it and might give some of these games a shot!
I really want to know the lore behind the famous catchphrase "oh baby!" 🤣🤣 But seriously this was so fun to be a part of, thanks for having me on and thanks for getting me to do the art, had a blast!
I honestly have no idea, I just say it sometimes I think haha
I thoroughly enjoyed this video, it was really well edited/presented and you clearly have a real understanding of game design, what's good, what's not good and more importantly what's reasonable to expect and what isn't reasonable to expect. Also you put Mario Odyssey at #20 and BOTW at #1 which means you are very smart. Congratulations on being very smart!!
Hey I know you! Well, not personally, of course, I just mean I've seen your videos. Glad you liked it, and can appreciate the ranking disparity between Mario and Zelda lol
@@Dorkaxe I sure did! If you're ever in need of any more of those lil' guest features I'd love to come on :)
Great work with this!
@@NocturnalFudj Awesome, I'll keep that in mind for the future!
This is easily your best video so far and i've seen just about all of them. You did a great job of covering each game enough but not too much, the combination of other's to contribute was also great!
It's amazing to see how far you have come and how much you have grown as a content creator!
I am very proud to be one of your patrons and can't wait to see what you come up with next! :)
2017 was, dare I say, the best year for videogames we have ever had, possibly even surpassing the king that was 2007. The fact that so many gems from both triple-AAA and indie studios released or had expansions, and still pose a huge influence even into the 2020's... it's crazy to think about how blessed we were.
Came from fudj, stayed for the absolutely excellent production. Narration was such a vibe, loved it. New channel to binge I reckon!
Ayyy love to hear it! Hope my other stuff is at least somewhat as interesting!
Thumbnail got me, glad I stayed, great video. Hopefully you hit the algorithm lottery, more people need to see this.
Great video! It deserves a lot more views but I suppose it is somewhat niche to be talking about the best video games from five years ago.
Anyway, this is mostly just a comment for the algorithm because I enjoyed this video and I think more should watch it.
Thanks so much, I appreciate it!
I've been making my way through your channel, and, dude, you're really good at this. Like...WAY better than I would have thought for a channel so small that I happened to get randomly recommended by The Algorithm. You're able to look at games holistically and how the elements play into each other, have reasonable expectations of devs and know when a suggested change would be impractical, able to communicate reasoning behind your opinions instead of just stating "it feels good/bad," and, most importantly imo, you're able to make analysis of a games POSITIVE qualities. So so so many CZcams video games analysis channels are just "this game is one of the best in years, but it's not flawless, here's 45 minutes of me ranting about the flaws."
P.S - I fucking love Nioh and would stick it in top 5 on this list
That's very high praise, I appreciate it! Hope the rest of my channel can live up to the high bar I've set lol
Also, Nioh would totally be higher for me if the diablo gear stuff wasn't in there. The gameplay is so good, but oh man, I can't stand equipment loot drop stuff.
My favorite games of 2017 is Divinity: Original Sin 2, Resident Evil 7 and Breath of the Wild.
Loved all three of them.
Crazy you worked on this video for 5 years
Not gonna pin this comment, but the ending to the Nier Automata section was supposed to have the music fade away, not end abruptly like it currently does. Davinci Resolve is super finicky with its cross fades, and even though I KNOW I fixed all of them, the render spat out what we have now. Kinda sucks, since it basically ruins the mood imo, but I'm not postponing the video a day to re-render it only for a potentially luckier dice roll with the Davinci Resolve crossfades.
Don't care didn't ask. Dead Rising 3 the only thing It matters.
2017 was tough competition! I'm excited to watch this video after work
2017 was an amazing year for jrpgs. Persona 5, nier automata and dragon quest 11. I didn't care for botw much from what I played. Xenoblade chronicles 2 looks good just need to finish 1.
Fantastic video. Criticism was on point, it was fun to see which games the other contributors would cover, and my fears that my part wouldn't fit in were unfounded.😅
I'm so glad I came across this channel. After binging all of matthewmatosis' videos for months, I was looking for other reviewers similar to him. I can't begin to explain how hard it is to find reviewers that actually put effort into their reviews. But then I saw your battlefront 2 (2005) review and now I'm hooked. Thanks for actually researching your topics and taking time with a review like matthewmatosis does.
Putting me next to Matthew is pretty high praise, so I'll take it! Thanks, glad you dig the channel!
You got Mandalore? Awesome man :)
Great video by the way, been looking forward to it all week.
I tried Darkwood due to Mandy and could not recommend it more.
I will tries a few of these on this list for sure!
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah getting Mandalore was pretty cool, glad a few people were able to be surprised by it!
@@Dorkaxe I do highly recommend The Long Dark. I have put many hours into it.
Thanks for the invite to be a part of this video!
Also that intro is superb
The hollow knight guy sounds like he whispering but yelling in a gymnasium. Audio was very strange.
You even got mandalore. Awesome for you, my dude.
Right? Wasn't expecting him!
Thanks!
OK, you definitely got me with DR4.
not mee wondering how this guy managed to play 25 games with a lot of them being pretty big in one year only to see this video was made 5 years later
This was a pretty great list, giving some love to some games in desperate need of it. Honestly, my two largest changes would be pushing Odyssey up a bit, and including Xenoblade 2…at all. I was really hoping it would pop up at some point, but I gave up around #13.
Yeah I'm not super into JRPGs, and haven't played it. I am interested though, so maybe some day! I definitely should have included it it the list at the end, but I think I just forgot about it.
Um... that Xenoblade 2?
@@radaf4429 I’m pretty sure there’s only one, yes…I understand there’s a lot of negativity towards it, but most of that is coming from people who never actually even got halfway through. Basically everybody who beats it has something good to say about it, and most end up loving it. If you don’t like it, that’s fine and totally understandable (it can certainly be a little over-the-top at times). But you have to admit that it’s a colossal project made with a whole load of passion and commitment.
You know the list gonna be good when #25 is a hidden object game with a capella interactables
This is a great list, for me Mario odyssey might have to be my #1 for 2017
Prey's my second favorite game
Happy it made it onto the list
I Recommend That You play The Gravity Rush Series It's Really Underrated
Great stuff! Engagement! Algorithms!
Hollow knight is my favorite game of all time so im a bit surprised seeing it only at 5th place. But good list over all i guess at the very least reviewing/ranking games from years past is original.
That's the game I was thinking of specifically where if it released literally any other year, it would be my GOTY without hesitation. It's like splitting hairs 8 through 1 for me tbh, they're all 9.5/10 at least for me.
@@Dorkaxe i guess 2017 had more amazing games than i realized if the top 8 are that close.
Glad that just since a few months ago when I found your account, your subs have doubled and it's deserved.
Odds of reviewing SW Clone Wars PS2?
Very high, just not soon. Thanks for the support!
Thanks for the vid
Oh my god another human being who's played Transformers Devastation?
1:09:56 Postal has that over BOTW
I feel old knowing these games are now like 4 or 5 years old
I don't doubt that you have good reasons for disliking Nier, but saying large parts of it are garbage with limited supporting explanation in a top 25 video of all things is pretty rough. I click on a video like this for generally positive sentiments. My guess is in the circles you run in it's self evident that the game is bad, but this certainly isn't the generally held sentiment. Nothing makes me want to turn off a video more than unsupported controversial arguments.
From my perspective the combat is juicy but unspectacular. On the difficulty mode I played you don't usually have to think much about your attack strategy, other than maintaining your uptime. But there is enough variety in defensive situations (bullet patterns, attack styles) and gameplay styles to keep the combat interesting for the first run.
I gave my reasons for disliking Nier, I just didn't go in-depth with them. I included them more so as a way to rationalize my low placement of the game, and to give an honest impression of it. The combat is mundane, you don't really have to think at all, and holding down the turret bot button at all times is tedious. The leveling system is pointless and seems to only serve making you think twice if you should tackle a certain side mission or not. Many parts of the game are messy as all hell, which is usually the case for avant-garde creators such as Yoko Taro. The highs are high, but the lows are incredibly low. I'm not pretending the bad parts are self evident, I'm just trying not to make the Nier part specifically take 10 minutes so I can show examples. I also don't want to spoil much of the game, and I didn't. When referencing the true end credits, I showed a clip from the first 20 minutes. I didn't show anything even related to the 2nd or 3rd playthroughs of the game. Almost all of this top 25 is spoiler free, which I'm very proud of, as I was able to recommend while also providing light criticism to many games I wouldn't normally make a dedicated video on. I'm sorry if it's unwelcome, but for a game with such extremes as Nier and Nioh right after, it's almost impossible to talk about it in a strictly positive light. It would almost feel disingenuous in a way, at least to me. (Also the "garbage" cut was to Adam, or Eve, or whoever. Those guys are the definition of edge-lords)
Oh, and if you liked Nier's combat, I would heavily recommend the other PlatinumGames titles I mentioned in that section. Far, far better than Nier's combat.
Sorry for the 2nd edit, but I'm almost thinking, what do you mean unsupported arguments? The "so much of it is bad/so much of it is good" line was gearing up to the rapid fire appraisals and criticisms. What more could I have shown for those? I'm only speaking for myself and how I enjoyed/didn't enjoy the game, so I'm actually quite curious what more I was supposed to do? How do I further support the "argument" of the genre shifts falling flat? Or that the humanization of the machines is too rushed? Or the opening of the game and main story missions are a slog? Showing more footage of it? I guess I don't understand lol
@@Dorkaxe I don't really want to get into a big debate with you, but I was mostly referencing your appraisal of the combat.
To address your question, "falls flat", and "slog" are emotional descriptors that don't describe what you don't like about the game. I would look for reasoning why you think the genre shifts fall flat. Maybe you think the Shmup gameplay doesn't have enough player options for interesting strategy to emerge. Or you think the enemy design doesn't have enough variety to encourage different approaches from players. Maybe you think box pushing is slow, and interrupts the normally speedy pacing. Or you think hacking is unchallenging, and rote.
Obviously I don't expect a video essay length amount of justification. I think you usually do a pretty good job in your dedicated videos in explaining your viewpoints. But throwing a game in here to harshly criticize without the appropriate amount of time is always going to be a hard thing to handle. Nier Automata doesn't rank highly on my platinum games tier list, and I'd probably rank it similarly in a list of my own, but it's a big pet peeve of mine when content creators are overly negative.
I guess that's fair enough, no biggie. Sharing opinions is welcomed, so I appreciate the perspective.
@@Dorkaxe To be positive I liked the rest of this video, and The Rivals of Aether section made me want to pick up that game.
Hopefully Breath of the Wild 2 adds a peeing action!
Dude if BotW 2 allows you to take a piss like in Death Stranding, idk man, I'd fucking lose it. Fishing and pissing, please Nintendo!
0:55
Sonic Mania is my game of 2017
That guy saying the numbers probably likes Huey Lewis and the News.
You should look into *DETENTION*
It's one of the best horror games of 2017, along with Darkwood, RE7 and Evil Within 2.
Oh yeah, I've heard of that! Yeah, it looks good, I'll add it to my list!
persona 5 would be so much better if the story was more consistent (ann being harassed in the first arc and then ryuji constantly sexualising her played off as a joke(I'm used to this anime stuff so I could get over it)) but the story and dialogue genuinely treats the audience like 10 year olds never leaving anything up to interpretation or subtlety just banging you over the head with the message
I still love the game it's the first ~100 hour long game that compelled me to finish it. the gameplay is great and I genuinely liked the characters.
Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like the dialogue. It's nuts. Way too much of it and it's not great.
PREY 2017!!!
44:15 Will preface since he probably forgot, RoA's story mode is unanimously seen as a kid's book that no ond cares about. The rest of the game is AMAZING (especially with Steam Workshop) but don't bother trying the story mode 😂
Yeah story mode isn't the best, but I figured it was worth mentioning at least.
@@Dorkaxe fair lol
@@Zylefer Steam workshop is great, though. I have plenty of wacky characters like Eddy, Earthworm Jim, Goku and Krillen, Goomba and many more. Good fun for sure! There's a Jill valentine (I think, some RE girl) that's super cool as she switches her main gun which has different effects.
Just curious, how are you liking the 4 added workshop characters? My friend loves Mollo, and I'm pretty partial to Hodan.
@@Dorkaxe Yeah I'm a bit impartial to Dan Furnace actually adding OC's to the main game but at the same time it's also a congrats to those who worked real hard on said OC's.
@@Zylefer Yeah I get that. I know some in the competitive sphere said a few of them clearly weren't balanced well.
You shat the bed with nier ngl
Also 3rd playthrough continues the story, and doesn't just replay it from a different story
Given that I mentioned how good the true end credits were, I hoped it would be obvious I've played through the whole game. I'm not about to spoil in the video about the 3rd playhthrough.
True
What happened batim?
I actually think Hollow Knight is a really mediocre game. It's a very milktoast metroidvania with a world and gameplay i found much more enjoyable in SOTN. Hollow Knight also refuses to tell any sort of story which makes its admittedly beautiful world feel barren and uncompelling. I know a lot of people like this game, but I think it got popular because people started saying it was like Dark Souls and that it shared part of its name with an already successful indie game.
I think I had that comparison kind of nerfed for me, since I had already played Salt and Sanctuary, which is much closer to a 2D souls game than Hollow Knight. I've played SOTN, and I wasn't a huge fan of it. I will admit I should give it another play, since it was a while ago and I may appreciate it more at this point in my life, but yeah, I just really like how Hollow Knight feels.
@@Dorkaxe Just make sure you look up the button combo for Soul Steal if you didn't discover it your first time. That move alone increased my enjoyment of the game lol
I can appreciate that DDLC made a splash, but hearing the dev talk about visual novels and clearly have no idea what the wider genre is like (and having that attitude echoed by lots of people who played it) was deeply annoying. My friends have streamed a bunch of them, and subverting genre/expectations isn't even new for the medium. So it's worthwhile in its own right, but it's a shame that it got treated as the exception for its genre, instead of being a stepping stone into it.
I actually have heard this sentiment from others who like VN as well, at least in regards to the meta aspect. To perhaps rectify my ignorance, do you have a few you'd recommend I look into?
@@Dorkaxe Not sure what happened to my original comment, but in any case, I'd recommend Cafe Enchante, which has a twee-sounding concept but goes in some wild directions.
@@BeamSplashX It looks like that one came out in 2019, do you have any examples of ones pre-DDLC? I'll give that one a shot regardless.
@@Dorkaxe There's a game from 2013 called "YOU and ME and HER: A Love Story" that fits the bill. The 2020 release date is just for that Steam version.
This list and channel are garbo
You're 29?! Man, I've watched a good handful of your other videos, and I thought you were like 22... you sound young for your age, haha.
Dead Rising 4 First Place. Dead Rising 3 the Best Game Of all times. We need more Dead Rising and a Discord.
First…shit I’m late. Will watch later. This guy makes good videos
Just my thoughts:
In order to learn how to fight well in Rivals of Aether, you need to already know how to fight well in Rivals of Aether. The CPU bots are so incapable of keeping up with even the worst players imaginable. The bots suck. So the story gives no good practice. And playing online involves getting wrecked for hours and hours only to make negligible improvement. It's unfortunately a game that exists solely for the intensely dedicated, and not *at all* for a more casual player (or at least, only for casual players with friends who are just as bad at the game as them). So as good as the game may be for certain groups of people, it's atrociously bad for equally as many groups of people. I think you could say Rivals of Aether is a good game for the right people, so giving it a review or listing it in a top # list should probably come with a disclaimer that it isn't for everyone. Like "yeah this is a 8/10, but only if you're dedicated to learning this fighter, or are already really good at Smash Melee, specifically".
Zelda BOTW feels like it wouldn't be ranked #1 if it didn't have the word Zelda attached to it. Where is the Zelda? Really all it has to show for Zelda-style dungeons are the Shrines, which are often mediocre and too plentiful. I certainly wouldn't consider it a masterpiece, only because previous Zeldas already do what BOTW tries, but better. I would say it's a Magnum Opus, maybe, but certainly not a masterpiece. It has more major flaws than Hollow Knight does, at least. I'd sooner consider Hollow Knight or Cuphead a masterpiece than BOTW. Not to say those games are perfect, just that their flaws are much less significant.
Kind of similar to BOTW, while I would consider Elden Ring Fromsoft's magnum opus, I wouldn't even remotely consider it a masterpiece. Nearly every aspect of Elden Ring was done better in a previous Fromsoft game, or could've been done better in general. It just happens to be the best complete package, and some aspects of it *are* the best of Fromsoft's titles.
I guess for you "masterpiece" is closer to something that is great with fewer flaws. I'm not necessarily sure I agree, but that's alright. I can admit I'd be good with more dungeon dungeons, but what it does well, or at least, what it does that no other game has ever managed to do, makes it a masterpiece to me. For example, it's very obvious that BotW has inspired a lot of developers to make games that resemble BotW...however, ALL of them are focused on the big green open world, and maybe the para-glider, but none of them come close to the level of interactivity found in BotW, which is what really stood out to me about that game.
@@Dorkaxe yeah fair enough. It usually does come down to a different definition of masterpiece
@@glowerworm Case in point, Pixel a Day described Hellblade as a masterpiece for other reasons. I totally get what you mean, and your perspective is more than valid, but I also try not to get too hung up on definitions if I can help it. For example, many have criticized my use of the word "critique" for some videos, and I'm like, you know what this word means in this context, I'm gonna talk about a game for a long time in-depth lmao
Dude this is 2022 why you talking about 2017?!!
Sorry I'll delete the video, my B
@@Dorkaxe nah you put much appreciated hard work on it it’s just weird and confusing to talk about games from a previous year specifically
@@normal8590 I think it's better in a way, gives us a way to appreciate and find neglected games that went under the radar. Which by this point would be on deep sale 75%+ off.
@@normal8590 I didn't know games stopped being good when they're a year or more old.
@@normal8590 Imo it makes a lot more sense for a retrospective on year's games well after it passed. Lets you see it for what it is, what impact it left and without any of the hype.
It's good to see that talented newcomer @Mandaloregaming getting a platform. He's one to watch!
