    Things are so different then when I got my CDL in the 1960s, I grew up on the farm, so by the time I was.14, I was driving all types of trucks ,tractors and combines and was taking grain to the elevator, I would drive our semi out into the field, they would offload the combine into the Trailer and I would just take it to the elevator, I didnt have my license yet but was driving the semi to the elevator to drop off grain , my training was just working around the farm driving trucks, and tractors, running the backhoe and anything that was needed, when I was able to get my CDL, I got the book studied it for a day, when I was 21, Then I just went to the DMV, I walked in took the test and passed , Then we went out did a walk around ,he asked a few basic questions , we got in drove down the highway, we went to a dock and backed in and then I drove thru town, we got back and within a hour I had my CDL and was driving. I drove for over 50 years accident free and enjoyed driving but if I had to go thru what everyone does today I don't know if I would since I never felt it was that difficult, but I was raised around driving trucks and heavy equipment and farming which made it easy ,

      nobody got on here and said they never had tire blow out , or had things happen ,lots of guys today go there career accident free and that's not unusual, so I guess your just not super trucker material , you may need to go back and work at McDonald's if you can't cut it .

      @@peteholms9298 in order to get your CDL you will have to go to a qualified truck driving school today and jump thru hoops in order to get your license, You will have to pay for it ,sign an agreement and I don't know the cost, but I have seen numbers to go to a truck driving school of around 8,000 dollars , When I was a Driver Trainer for our company 40 years ago, every new hire ,no matter how qualified they said they were , the new hire would have to ride with a driver trainer for 2 weeks minimum, The new hire would get a salary at that time of 300 per week and remember this was in the 1980s so you could get by on that , After 2 weeks going to the west coast and back ,driving thru mountains, in rain and snow we would just make sure the person was qualified and turn a report in , if we didn't feel they were ready, and I did have some that said they had driven for 5 years that obviously didn't , then we would either say ok your fine or recommend to the company they needed more time with a trainer, I probably turned down 10 percent that just shouldn't be on there own yet. Then another 20 percent that needed more time with a trainer before we would let them go on there own, at that point they would go with another trainer who would work with them and evaluate them again after another 2 weeks and if they weren't working out after 4 weeks they were let go .

I took classes from a CDL school min 240 hours for class which was practice on the written exam then practice with skills before going to dmv to take written test and then have dmv testers come to my school to administer the driving skills test before getting my license. Is this not the same thing but without the mandatory 240 hours?

  • @cummins31
    @cummins31 Před 2 lety

    Very curious about how this will work and have not had this explained clearly.
    Im in NC, going to be upgrading from a class B to class A. So in NC you I would have to take my combination skill test just to obtain a class A permit. Would going through an eldt training provider allow me to have my road test covered by that training provider, so I wouldn't have to do that with the DMV? As it does now with going through a school or using a third party tester? Literally get your permit from the DMV, go through your eldt training, go to the DMV with your passing credentials, and just be handed your license?
    Just trying to clarify the process a little, because I keep hearing things like range and road testing with the eldt, but you can't go on the road without a permit, which is had by taking a computer "skills" test in NC and many other states Im assuming. Will the eldt road time and pre trip time be the same as using a school or third party tester now, where you do not have to do those particular tests at the DMV? Just trying to clarify for a dummy that is probably over complicating and over thinking the whole process.

    • @Trucksafe
      @Trucksafe  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for watching! Passing an ELDT course means you will be eligible to take the skills test to get a Class A in your example. Whether a particular state will allow the ELDT-administered BTW training to suffice in lieu of a DMV skills test will be up to each state. But for those that won’t allow it, you would have to complete the ELDT training and then take the DMV skills test to get the license. Not sure how NC will handle it specifically.

    Another issue I can see coming in the industry is education , we had a guy at one company who was a local driver who couldn't read or write, he was grandfathered in with his CDL , he was as good and safe as anyone, but just never got a education but he could drive a semi, I worked with several people who could drive a semi but they didn't test well, they were good drivers but if you have them take a test like hazmat,they just had issues unless you sat with them and explained things ,
    We are now seeing high school kids which has been in the news a lot , being pushed thru school and everyone passes, the alarming thing was 40 percent of high school graduating seniors, couldn't read on a 4th grade level at graduation , so this in itself is making things tougher , especially when a CDL will require more book work and testing , so to me this is just going to eliminate a lot of people from trucking ,They get pushed thru school and they won't be capable comprehending the material and understand it to become a truck driver, so just another thing that is going to be hurting the trucking industry.

      If you can't read the road signs without a dedicated on-board translator, I'd imagine that's not a real safe situation for the driver or anyone else around for that matter. Being literate is super important for understanding and studying federal regulations and safety laws. To be honest, I'd have to agree with this....I'd prefer commercial drivers be able to read road signs and emergency procedures. It's like hiring a pilot that can't understand the air traffic controller. They might be able to fly like a bird but the confusion or miscommunication could kill people. Uts the exact same thing with a semi pulling 20k lbs behind it...it would be way too dangerous and careless to be in or put others in that situation.

      @@redleader not everyone pays some people like me I just got my cdl class b with no schooling . I have a uncle who has a fleet of dump trucks I just used one to take my road test and passed . They want to make it so people like me will have to start paying for school to get a cdl but a lot of people can’t afford school like me as well . Cdl prep app to pass my computer tests for permit , CZcams to study for pretrip inspection and my uncle truck to pass my road test . I still had to study my ass off many hours of studying but studying at home is free

      @@shakurmartin8480 just curious… why couldn’t you use the same formula for your CDL A versus B? You already have access to a fleet of trucks… what you did is exactly what my husband did, got his permit then license shortly after.
